Notes: Ed was at Fremont for its Nitro Bowl early in January. All cars there were to run three rounds with the winner based on the number of wins in the competition. Ed won his first race with a 6.60/218.44 (Top Speed) over Dale Pulde's 6.87/155 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In round two, his 6.62 beat Jake Johnston, who got out of shape and shut off in the "Pisano-Matsubara" car. But in his final run, he ran his best ET, and it wasn't good enough. His 6.52 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.51, and McEwen's win gave him the title as he won all three of his races. Ed then went to OCIR for its season opener, where once again he set Top Speed, this time at 217.91, but lost to Johnston in round two. He did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, nor was he at Beeline for the NHRA Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.24/225.56 and an opening-round 6.37/210.28 beat John Lombardo. A second-round 6.32/220.58 beat a tire-shaking Tripp Shumake, and in the semifinals, he broke a throttle linkage and slowed to 9.75 but lucked out as opponent Gene Snow fouled. He then faced Don Prudhomme in the final, and despite running a good 6.36/223.88, he still finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.26/227. He then went to OCIR for its East vs. West Meet, and while he didn't win, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/232.55. Early in March, Irwindale held its Night Opener. Eight cars made two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ed was nowhere near running quick enough to reach the final. In his first race, both he and Lombardo smoked the tires with the "Ace's" 7.40 coming out on top. He again smoked the hides in his second race, finally backing out of it to 13.15, while eventual winner McEwen won with a 6.67. McCulloch ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Jim Dunn. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He competed at the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race on March 20.27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.50 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.61/200.44 beat Mike Halloran who broke. In the second round, his 6.43/211.76 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.32/182. A week later, McCulloch was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.50/227.84. In the first round, he got a solo as Steve Leach had crashed in qualifying. Ed advanced with a 6.63/196.93. But in round two, he had problems against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and his shut off 12.41 lost to Jim's strong 6.19. On the Fourth of July weekend Ed was entered in the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Ed beat a broken Larry Gould while breaking himself on the run. Ed’s best NHRA national event times were 6.161/237.46 at Indy. Did Ed run 6.15 somewhere this year? | Indy runs were in the new Foster/Hume car debuted that August. In the pictured '75-'76 car, he also won the SIR Funny Car opener in early April with a 6.46 over Mike Miller's Boredom Zero Mustang II. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ed McCulloch debuted his new Arrow at the NHRA Fallnationals in September. He qualified #6 at 6.331/226.13. In round one, he fell off the pace and lost to Jim Adolph, 6.58/191.89 to 7.24/155.17. On October 1 at Irwindale's Grand Finale. This was Irwindale's final race, and it featured a sixteen-car field. Ed ran 6.55/211 in the opening round to beat Gary Densham's 6.59/205, but he shut off in round two against the eventual winner, John Lombardo. He qualified #xx at the Ontario World Finals at 6.25/229.59 but again lost in the first round, this time to Tom McEwen, 6.174/230.76 to 6.422/211.26. Notes: McCulloch was at OCIR early in the year for its Funny Car opener. He ran well, reaching the final against Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max." Despite running a good 6.30/228.42, the "Max" stepped up to 6.01/234 to claim the victory. Ed did not go to Tucson to race at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.435/230.76. He lost in round one to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.206/226.13 to 7.118-153.06. Ed was back at OCIR for a sixteen-car show in March. While he didn't reach the final, he did run a strong 6.24. Ed's next NHRA national event was not until the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus in June. He ran 6.410 to claim the third alternate position. At Englishtown, Ed qualified #13 at 6.350/227.27. He got a measure of revenge on Ron Colson with a first-round win, 6.75/229.00 to 6.82/229.00. Ed shut off against Don Prudhomme in round two, sending the Snake on a 6.26/227.27 single. Ed debuted a new Plymouth Arrow at the Fallnationals in Seattle. His hometown for 1977 was confirmed on NHRA Summernationals TV coverage. | The Foster/Hume car, new in August '76, burned up at the '77 Fremont PDA in July, and he repainted and ran the '75-'76 Slawick car (at '77 SIR 64 Funny Cars, also) until the Arrow was ready. He even ran the old Orange, low-slung Dodge at a May match race at SIR. - Joe Moore

Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64-car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division 6 opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: Photo from Orange County. Ran 6.091/237.46 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80. | At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR, McCulloch made his debut driving the "Super Shops" car. It was quite spectacular when the car caught fire on his first pass ever and was seriously damaged. He was OK. Ed qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.14/243.90. In the first round, he got out of shape and slowed to an 8.13 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.16. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11, but again got crossed up in the first round, and his 6.83/153.06 lost to Paul Smith's 6.11/229 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.18/230.76. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.38/209.30 when alternate Dave Condit (filling in for Don Prudhomme) broke. His 6.21/226.70 beat Mike Dunn in Bill Schifsky's Mustang II in the semifinals. In the final, McCulloch ran Sherm Gunn. Gunn had problems and slowed to a 9.95/84 while Ed got the victory with a 6.12/236.84. On May 4, Ed was in Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 points race. He qualified #1 with a 6.14/236.84, but he lost in a dual tire smoker in the first round. Hank Johnson won with a 6.74 over Ed's slightly quicker 6.72. At the third Division 6 race at OCIR, Ed qualified #2 with a 6.13/225 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.03. McCulloch's 6.35/234.37 beat a tire-smoking Jim Dunn in the first round. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen. In June, the "Super Shops" team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.25/223.32 qualified #14 in the field. He beat Tripp Shumake in round one, and a 6.26/226.70 beat Dale Pulde in round two. But in the semifinals, he had a header come loose, and he shut off, giving Tom Hoover an easy ride into the final. The team failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the NHRA Summernationals, Ed lasted until the second round, where he lost to Billy Meyer. At the NHRA Division 5 race at Bonneville Raceway, McCulloch lost in the semifinals to Rob Williams. His 6.68/208 lost to Rob's 6.44/200. We formerly listed 6.04 for this car this year. Removing until we get validation. That did not occur on the NHRA national event trail, where Ed ran the 6.091 at Indy and plenty of 6.1s. His 243.90 from the Winters was his fastest speed of the year. Ed won NHRA Indy in this car. The OCIR fire happened late in '79, not sure if it was at the MM. In January '80 ND reported a 6.08 at the Fremont Opener, where Beadle ran 5.92/244. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79/250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73/252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76/253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91/254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off-25.41/31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93/253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70/250.83. A first-round 5.75/250.69 beat Oswald, but while running Pulde in the second round, he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254, but against Scott Kalitta in the first round, he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79/254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round, against him and McCulloch's 5.82/255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line, advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81/247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69/252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90/244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77/253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88/233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79/251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75/254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/253.52. In the first round, his 5.82/240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69/250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well, with a 5.98/233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round, where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67/197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His tire-smoking, off-pace 6.22/234 beat Scott Kalitta in the semifinals, putting him in the final against another long-time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, McEwen broke, and the race never came off, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25/69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain-delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed could not run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals, on April 13. He made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86/256.41. He won, but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round, and in round two, his 6.02/242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12/244 in a tire-smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95/252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final, and Ed got the victory with a 6.00/247.52 over Head's right there 6.00/250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54/168.28. He slowed to a 6.65/162.68 in the first round, which lost to Kalitta's 5.80/252. Crewchief Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00/231.12 qualified #12, but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again, McEwen beat him, but this time it was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals, so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92/249.03. His first-round 5.94/250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78/234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round, when his 6.01/245.90 beat a tire-smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88/244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87/234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time, the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88/249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, with a 5.96/241.93. A 5.86/254 beat West in round two, and his 5.98/252 beat a tire-smoking Oswald in the semifinals. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44/30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81/254. Still, it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop before Indy, which was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight-car show and beat Head in round one, before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88/245.73. In the first round, he survived a tire-smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41/243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34/220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92/226.52, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64/260. The following week (September 7), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #4, but he lost in round one. The team then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Ed's 5.80/251.04 qualified #6. Another 5.80 at 246.30 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.91/235 in the opening round. In round two, eventual winner Oswald ran 5.65/262 to beat McCulloch's 5.85/235.17.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Also 5.49 at Ennis All Stars race in April. Battle for Funny Car ET record at Ennis 87 was amazing: John Force (5.453), Mark Oswald (5.449), Mike Dunn (5.443), and Force (5.396) all reset the mark, but Ed McCulloch finally landed the mark with the 5.366 (with a best speed of 271.73). Later went 272.06 at Pomona Finals 87. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A 5.95/238.72 beat Tom Hoover's 5.97/238 in the first round, but he lost a clutch in the semifinals and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.59/266.11 to qualify #5. He picked up to 5.53/266.90 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 5.68/247. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 11.28/74.75 loss to Bernstein. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to McEwen. The following week (March 22) found the team at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ed qualified #2 with a 5.57/266.58 behind Bernstein's track record 5.47. Billy Meyer broke against him in the first round, and McCulloch advanced with a 5.62/256.84. In round two, his 5.58/265.09 took out John Force's 5.69/257. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Johnny West's 5.76/252 in the "Hawaiian." Then came the NHRA Winston All Star race on April 5th at the Texas Motorplex. Ed qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.49/273.05, but he broke in the first round, against Meyer. Only sixteen FC's showed for the sixteen available spots at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals so qualifying was easy. Still, Ed laid down a 5.68/262.85 to qualify #3. A 6.01/252.45 advanced in round one, when Doc Halladay lost a blower belt and in round two he beat a tire-smoking Hoover with a 5.66/260.94. But he lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Ed did not race at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, choosing to go to Famoso for the Bakersfield meet that was running on the same weekend in early May. He ran 5.68/260.11 to qualify #2 behind Force's 5.66. These two would work their way into the final. McCulloch's first-round 5.85/256.41 beat Don Prudhomme who overpowered the track and smoked his tires. A 5.79/259.36 beat Jim Murphy in the semifinals. Force and McCulloch had a good race in the final, but Force's 5.72/260 got the victory over Ed's 5.79/236.84. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.88/252.38 qualified #5. He beat Eric Reed in round one, with a 5.87/257.50, but the car broke in round two giving Bernstein a free trip into the semifinals. Because of the Cajun Nationals being postponed one week due to rain, it was run on the same weekend as the IHRA Springnationals and subsequently, Ed did not run at Bristol. He did run a week later (June 7) at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.51 at 263.92 while beating Hoover and a semifinal 5.58/257.14 solo advanced to the final when Steve Hodkinson failed to show. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird. Mark got the victory with a 5.60/265 while Ed continued to wait for his first victory of '87. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 with a 5.74/252.52. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" before sleeping on the line in round two where his 5.81/253.95 lost to Meyer's 5.86/250. NHRA's Grandnationals in Canada had only fifteen cars show for the sixteen-car field, but McCulloch still ran hard registering a 5.72/258.32 to qualify #2 behind Force at 5.68. Ed's 5.76/250.69 in the first round, beat West's 5.83/257. A second round 5.88/247.38 took care of Jim Head and in the semifinals, his 5.74/248.07 got the best of Oswald. Once again, he was in a final, and he faced Force again. The results were the same as they had been at the Bakersfield race, John won with a 5.65/257 while Ed shut off with problems. He suffered a first-round loss to Darrell Amberson at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he lost to McEwen in the first round. That after qualifying #7 with a 5.67/256.77. The team was long overdue for a win. It didn't happen at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.87/243.96 qualified #7, and he beat Craig Epperly and West with times of 5.96/235.47 and 6.14/229.00 to reach the semifinals. Crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in too much power and Ed smoked the tires and lost to Force's 5.88/245. On August second, Seattle held an Funny Car show with ten Funny Car's running two rounds with the two lowest ET's running in the final. Ed ran 5.75/258.88 over Gary Densham and 5.78/253.52 over Beadle's quicker 5.76/249. His first-round 5.75 made the final where he ran Force who made the final with a 5.63. Once again, John gave Ed another runner-up finish with his 5.67/256 beating the "Miller" car's 5.72/254.95. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Ed qualified #6 with a 5.64/257.73. He shut off to a 9.26/90.66 win in the first round, when McEwen broke, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 17.94/44.25 loss to Bernstein's 5.57/265. Finally, a win! On August 30, he won the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. He qualified #2 behind Oswald and then beat Scott Kalitta and Halladay before stopping Oswald in the final. For a team running this well it was a long wait for its first win of the season. Then it was off to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. The Big Bud Shootout was run in conjunction with this race and Ed qualified third for the eight-car field based on qualifying results for the past year. He lasted unit round two where he broke an oil line and shut off against Oswald. The following day for the Nationals, Ed qualified #5 with a 5.61/268.01. A first-round 5.79/259 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/241. In round two the car broke a crank and went into a fireball in a loss to Bernstein. Ed got the car stopped and he was OK. RH

Best NHRA times of 5.252 at Houston Fall 1988 and 277.26 at Maple Grove 9/88. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing that featured an eight-car Funny Car show. McCulloch qualified #2 with a 5.56/261.62 behind John Force's 5.34. These two would end up meeting in the final. The "Ace" got there by first beating Ron Fassl with a 5.60/260.86 and in the semifinals, a 5.73/255.68 got around a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. John was running two tenths quicker with 5.40 and 5.41 times. In the final, it was a foregone conclusion. John beat Ed's 5.73/204.08 with a 5.47/267 to take the title. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.39 (Low ET) got the pole, but in the first round, the "Ace" smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a first-round 5.69/256.41 beat a tire smoking Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but in the semifinals against Tripp Shumake, the Cutlass broke on the line. A week later (March 20) he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It was a weekend he would rather forget as he failed to qualify and was only third alternate for the show. How things change in a week, as on March 27 he was low qualifier with a 5.54/258.62 at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.75 lost to Scott Kalitta's holeshot 5.77.

Notes: Ed also ran 5.188 that same day. The 5.132 was not bettered until March 1992. This photo from Columbus 1988. Confirmed 277.17 at Memphis 89. We need to confirm the Ennis 280.89. | Ed started the '89 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.36/276.58. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. At the next event, the NHRA Supernationals at Houston, he ran a 5.34/272.89 to qualify #7. Once again Ed got taken out by Oswald, but this time it was in round two where Mark's 5.38 nipped McCulloch's 5.40. He had some luck on his side at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.39/268.89 qualified #5, but that was the best he ran at Gainesville. He beat a tire smoking Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a second round 6.47 beat a tire smoking R.C. Sherman. In the semifinal, a 9.76/68 mph run advanced when Art Hendey broke on the line. In the final, Ed took the victory with a 19.70-70.94 beat Bruce Larson fouled. On April 23 he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.45/270.75 qualified #3, but he lost to Sherman in the first round. From there it was off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran a 5.41/274.97 to qualify #7. He beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a 5.55 took out Tony McCallum's 5.60 in round two. But in the semifinal, he shut off to a 10.00 loss to Kenny Bernstein. He made it into the semifinals of the next event as well, the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he qualified #6 with a 5.55/268.73. He got revenge on Oswald in round two, beating him with a 5.46/269 to Mark's 5.57. But in the semifinal, John Martin beat Ed. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and while he didn't make the final, he did set Low ET at 5.45. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.36/269.70, but he lost to Johnny West in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #4 with a 5.52/265.17, but a first-round 6.34/163 lost to Hendey's 5.63/260. McCulloch made the final at the NHRA Summernationals in July. A 5.30 qualified #2. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and a 5.56/268 beat Larson's quicker 5.50 in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.64/262 beat a tire smoking Don Gay Jr. In the final he ran Bernstein. A 5.50 by McCulloch came in second best to Kenny's 5.41. In the thin air of Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Ed ran 5.65/252.24 to qualify #4. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, and a 5.72/250 beat Tom Hoover in round two, but a semifinal 5.91 fell to Larson's 5.54. The eleventh race on the NHRA schedule was the California Nationals. A 5.38/275.31 qualified Ed #2. He made it into the semifinal before losing to Oswald's 5.49/267 with a quicker 5.47/270.92. The NHRA Seafair Nationals was the next race. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.35/274.39, but a first-round 5.98/222.82 lost to Jim Murphy. Ed hadn't won a race since March and the team was overdue. Things finally came together on August 20 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. McCulloch got his first pole of the year with a 5.42/267.53. He set a 5.37 track record at 270.27 in the first round, and a second round 5.45/270.02 beat Sherman's 5.51/263. In the semifinal, a 5.42/268.25 beat upstart Larry Camenzind, and for the win he faced off with Larson. It was Ed's driving that got the victory, as he pulled a holeshot and his 5.55/266.90 beat Bruce's quicker 5.51/264. After that, it was on to Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 5.35/275.90 qualified #6 and in round one, a 5.56/271.49 beat Jerry Caminito's 6.11/171. In round two, his 5.46/269.94 lost to Larson's 5.32/274. On September 17, Ed was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.28/274.39 and a 5.40/222 beat R.C. Sherman in the first round. But in round two, he was late off the line and his 5.30/271.57 finished behind Force's 5.34/275.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1988 (same paint). NHRA mandated a new 3.20 rear end gear rule in the fuel classes. One team that was happy about the rule was this one. Ed McCulloch and Bernie Fedderly had been running the 3.20 gear since late in the '89 season. They were at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January, where Ed came off the truck and reset the track record with a 5.29 at 242.45. The next day, he returned to run 5.26/265.95 before smoking the tires to a 12.27/96.54 on a follow-up run. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, McCulloch's 5.29/266.42 qualified #2 behind John Force's 5.28/275. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 5.27 (Low ET and a track record) at 262.39 to beat Jim White's 5.50/258 in the "Hawaiian." In round two, Glenn Mikres' 5.63/257 lost to Ed's 5.38/258.99. Things continued to go his way in the semifinals, where a tire-hazing 5.89/235.78 beat Dale Pulde, who smoked the tires hard. In the final, he faced newcomer K.C. Spurlock, the last qualifier in the field who had beaten Force in the opening round. But Fedderly dialed in too much power, and Ed smoked the tires helplessly to a 21.37/31.07 while K.C. ran 5.78/186 for his first victory. The team's next stop was back at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. They didn't run nearly as well there as the month before; a 5.40/264.62 qualified #9. In the first round, he and Mark Oswald, who was driving for "Candies and Hughes," had a great race that saw both drivers run 5.37 (Ed at 265.48), but Oswald got to the stripe first. Qualifying did not go very well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch only qualified #14 with a 5.63/260.64. Fedderly stepped the car up in the first round, with a 5.31/274.13, taking out White's 5.73/188. A consistent 5.32/270.67 beat R.C. Sherman's 5.41/271 in the second round, but Ed smoked the tires against Bruce Larson in the semifinal. The next event on the NHRA calendar was the Gatornationals at Gainesville. McCulloch qualified #5 at 5.41/261.93. He almost lost in the first round, when he and his opponent, Johnny West, smoked the tires. Ed recovered first and won with a 6.69/245.63. Lane choice was not his for round two. He didn't need it as a 5.35/265.95 was enough to knock Oswald out of the show. Larson got out of shape and shut off in the semifinal, so Ed advanced with a 5.44/265.09. The final was a rematch of Pomona, with Spurlock not being as much of an underdog now. He even carried lane choice with him. But this time, Ed reversed the finish with his 5.33/267.37 getting the victory over K.C.'s 5.40/273. The next stop was Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car field and a 5.34/265.33 qualified #4. He improved to a great 5.28/271.16 to beat Spurlock's close 5.29/275 in round one, but a wheelstanding 7.46/110.63 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.44/265 in the semifinal. It didn't take Ed long to get back in the winner's circle as he won the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His 5.26/272.47 qualified #3. He then ran 5.35/267.30 to beat Oswald's 5.48/268. A second-round 5.44/258.84 beat Richard Hartman's 5.56/242. Larson smoked the tires against him in the semifinal and a 5.34/263.85 advanced. He went up against Paul Smith, who was driving Chuck Etchells Beretta in the final. Surprisingly enough, of the two, Smith had run the best number of eliminations, a 5.29 in round one. His semifinal 5.35 was nothing to sneeze at either. But he smoked the tires in the final, and Ed got his second win of the year with a 5.31/258.91.

Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.48/272.14 qualified #7. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.50/274.55 and a second-round 5.45/273.63 beat Jim White's 5.50/272 in the "Hawaiian." But in the semifinals, his 5.41/273.22 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.31/272. He qualified #3 with a 5.33/274.64 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and an opening-round 5.27/282.57 stopped Jim Murphy. But he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Del Worsham. He ran really well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 5.28/282.39 qualified #3, and he beat Gary Densham in round one. In round two, Mike Dunn's 5.46/251 lost to Ed's 5.30/278.29. He fell off to 5.40/276.32 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Oswald. He faced Force in the final for the money. Unfortunately, McCulloch smoked the tires and shut off to 6.11/159.37 while John picked up the win with a 5.21/278. Ed continued to qualify well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.29/272.06 got the #3 spot. He beat Gary Bolger in round one, with a 5.40/270.43, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the second round. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Once again, Ed qualified #3, this time with a 5.31/276.24. He beat Freddie Neely in round one before smoking the tires and losing to White in round two. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Ed slipped to #4 in qualifying with a 5.32/276.07. In the first round, Paula Martin lost an engine against him, and Ed advanced with a 5.54/256.70. A second round 5.52/267.77 beat Al Hofmann. But 5.5s were not going to get the job done, and, in the semifinal, Ed's 5.56/273.05 lost to Hoover's 5.48. The seventh race of the season was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. McCulloch returned to his #3 qualifying spot with a 5.34/272.06. He beat Murphy in round one, with a 5.48/271.73, but a round two 5.41/259.44 lost to Force's 5.35/267. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he "only" qualified #7 with a 5.48/265.01. In the opening round, he beat Martin's 5.69/245 with a 5.57/258.69, but he lost to eventual winner White in round two. He then made a stop at Kansas City International for its Summernationals. Ed set Low ET there at 5.62, and he reached the final against Force. The two had a good race, but John's 5.68/261 beat Ed's late leaving 5.65/257.50. Back on the NHRA trail at Englishtown for the Summernationals. McCulloch ran 5.26/271.82 to qualify #4. He stopped Martin again in round one, with a 5.40/266.58. But a second-round 5.47/263.08 lost to Worsham's 5.34/272. Worsham would go on to win the race. McCulloch was way overdue for a win. It almost came at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43. His speed on the run was 257.80. He beat rookie Len Seroka in round one, with a 5.82/252.31, and a second-round 5.55/256.19 beat Densham's 5.69/218. In the semifinals, his 5.59/257.14 trailered Hofmann at 5.76/253. This put Ed in his second NHRA final of the year. He faced Mike Dunn, who had been running just about a tenth quicker than Ed was throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Mike's 5.47/257 got the victory over Ed, who tried to make up the difference and fouled away a 5.54/255.82. Ed's best NHRA times were 5.237 from Maple Grove and the 282.57 from Phoenix.

Notes: Ed McCulloch was a strong runner in '92. It didn't start so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when he qualified #10 with a 5.02/288.36 and lost to Doug Herbert in the first round. It still didn't look so go when the team exploded two superchargers at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Ed finally qualified #8 with a 5.05/285.80, but they lost another supercharger (the third) and the race to Gene Snow in the first round. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch ran 4.94/291.73 to qualify #6. But in the first round, Bobby Baldwin stepped up to a 4.88/286 to beat Ed's 4.96/287.44. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team barely qualified, running a 5.03/274.05 for the #15 spot. Once again, he lost in the first round; this time, Eddie Hill got him with a 4.89/293 to Ed's 4.92/290.41. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. It was an eight-car show, and Ed ran 5.05/279.15 to qualify #6. Both he and Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires in the first round, but the "Ace's" 5.46/265.01 came out on top. He ran his best time at the meet in the semifinals, a 5.02/284.36, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 4.96/280. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Ed's 5.01/286.60 qualified #9 for the show, and in round one, he improved to 4.94/289.38 to stop Connie Kalitta from advancing. A second-round 4.98/285.80 beat Bernstein's 5.01/294, but in the semifinals, his 4.99/286.16 lost to Joe Amato's 4.87/287. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, a 5.03/287.53 qualified #7. A first-round 5.09/284.36 beat Jim Head's 5.23/273, but in round two, his 5.11/281.69 lost to Bernstein's 4.96/295.

Notes: Ed qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.86/294.50. In round one, his 4.87/298.50 defeated Scott Kalitta's 4.91/284. He had a close race with Joe Amato that saw both drivers run 4.86 (Ed at 298.01), but Amato crossed the stripe first. He qualified second at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.83/298.50 followed Cory McClenathan's 4.82/297. In the opening round, he was upset by Scott Kalitta. At Houston, he set a new track record 4.81 at 298.50 in qualifying #1 for the NHRA Supernationals.McClenathan fouled against him in the opening round, and Ed's 4.87/295.56 advanced. In the second round, Kenny Bernstein's car broke and slowed to 5.19/212, losing to McCulloch's 4.99/291.07. He then beat Doug Herbert in the semifinal with a 4.87/298.11. He faced Rance McDaniel in the final, and the two had a great race, with Ed winning with a 4.90/285.44 over McDaniel's 4.92/284. This was McCulloch's 22nd NHRA National event victory, stretching into '92; it was his fourth win at the last eight NHRA events. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 4.88/293.63 qualified #4 again and made his way into the final. He started by running 4.92/294.50 to beat Pat Dakin, followed by a 5.01/286.98 over a fouling McDaniel at 4.89/296. In the semifinal, he dispatched Mike Dunn's 5.07/276 with a 4.90/296.24. In the final, he faced Eddie Hill, and Hill's 4.87/286 got the win over Ed's slightly quicker 4.86/294.02. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His 4.98/291.35 was the first alternate, but when McClenathan crashed during qualifying, Ed got into the show. Amato smoked the tires against him in the first round, and McCulloch's 5.10/265.33 advanced. But in the semifinals, Ed smoked the tires and shut off against eventual winner Scott Kalitta. NHRA's next stop was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals near the end of April. Ed qualified #8 with a 4.94/294.40, but he lost in round one to Dunn. Another first-round loss occurred at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #3 with a 4.94/293.25, but his 5.08/253.60 in the first round lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.05/290. He "only" qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals with a 4.97/282.04, but he improved to 4.93/282.04 in round one to take out Hill. An off-pace 5.17/221.79 in the second round lost to Dunn's 4.95/278. Then came the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Ed's 5.02/288.46 qualified #8. Once again, Dunn stopped him, this time in the first round, where his 5.02/279 defeated Ed's 5.07/291.73. Twelfth member of the Slick 50 300 mph Club on October 15, 1993, with a 301.70 at Dallas. The 4.815 was the low qualifier at Houston Spring.

Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #10 with a 4.880/299.60. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 4.859/304.05 lost to Pat Austin's 4.88/262. The next stop was at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals. Ed's 4.867/298.90 qualified #11, but he again lost to Austin in the opening round with a 10-second shutoff. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 4.911/289.94 qualified #14, but he still had difficulty getting past round one. This time his 5.050/292.49 lost to Scott Kalitta's new NHRA record 4.726 at 298. Things didn't go well at Gainesville, where he was left outside looking in. McCulloch's 5.015/289.20 best was good for the third alternate. That was his last NHRA national event of the year.
