Notes: Of all the cars my grandfather had I'd say this one was for sure the most controversial. He bought Jimmy Rector's Alcohol Funny Car championship car from the 96 IHRA season and debuted it in March of 1997. He cut up the body to have functional doors and removable front cap, and built a drivers compartment on the left side and converted it to left-hand steer. The controversial part was leaving the rear suspension solid. When people started complaining, he chose to fully embrace the "Outlaw" in outlaw pro mod and had "Outlaw Racing" lettered on the side of the car. rnTo compensate for the weight distribution with the driver being on the left with no suspension, he put two batteries in a tray on the right rear of the car. When it was completed, the car was still not the lightest thing out there at 2650lbs. rnThe first trip out with the car was to Steele, Alabama the first week of March in 1997. They said the car could race. It qualified #4 the second pass with a 4.23 at 170mph. As soon as that happened they then said the car wasn't "legal" so they didn't get to race it.rnHe only ran the car a few times in 97, due to it being inconsistent, before selling it and buying another car. He later decided to buy it back and try to get it consistent during the late 01 early 02 seasons. He decided to have Bill McDaniel drive it so he could watch the car to see what the issue was, and that's when he realized sitting inside the car the post created a weird angle that would cause you to stage the car pointed to the left. After that was discovered, the car would make consistent passes down the track most of the time.rnThe last time the car was ran was at Phenix City, Alabama (pictured in some of these photos), and the car had a best ET of 4.06 at 180mph in the Semifinals. Going into the finals, Earnest added some power to the engine with the intent to run in the 3s and cause as much drama as possible, and at about 100 feet into the run a screw came out of the clutch and ruined the run, and caused a runner-up finish. The 60ft on that pass was in the .930s, so it almost certainly would have gotten into the 3s, but we will never know for sure.

Notes: Rance was out to prove that a Chevy could indeed run in the Chrysler Hemi-dominated Top Fuel class. He had the right crew chief in Mike Garrison, who had been trying to make the Chevy competitive in the class since '70. While other Chevy Top Fuel teams, such as Larry Dixon and Jim Bucher, relied on aluminum Can-Am "Rat" motors, this team still used a cast iron 454. The team consisted of Frank Stockton, Mike Garrison, and Rance McDaniel. Garrison built the engine using a Delta crank, Ansen rods, Venolia pistons, and a Howards cam. The heads were also cast iron and Lockerman did the head work. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold. On top of the GMC 6/71 blower sat an Enderle fuel injection unit. The 235" Ron Attebury chassis used a B&J transmission that transmitted the power to a Ramchargers built rear end with 3.70 gears. It was built over three months and weighed 1,480 lbs. | At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, McDaniel's best of 6.19/234 failed to qualify for the tough show. The team was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where they qualified #21 in the 32-car field with a 6.57. Rance made it pretty far in eliminations, lasting until the third round before losing to Tony Nancy. The next stop was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American Nationals. Forty-two cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field, and McDaniel's 6.41 got him the #14 spot. A 6.66/187.89 beat Don Enriquez in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Don Garlits in round two. Irwindale held its Fox Hunt race, and a 6.49 qualified the Chevy in the #7 spot in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, Rance lost early. At the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Pomona, Rance's 6.19/228.67 qualified #8. But once again, the car went out early. They were back at Irwindale for the T-Shirt Night event, but the car broke on the line in the first round against Bob Noice. By the time the second NHRA Division 7 race was run at Sacramento, it was evident to all that the team was getting things sorted out. Rance out-qualified many big names, running a 6.21 for the #3 spot in the twelve-car show. He was on it in the first round, where a 6.25/229.01 beat Dwight Hughes' quicker 6.15/225. But in round two, McDaniel smoked the tires and his 6.96/171.11 lost to James Warren's 6.00/230. The team stumbled for a few races, failing to qualify before they really opened some eyes at the PDA Championships held at OCIR on July 26. Fifty-six cars were attempting to qualify for the 32-car field, and McDaniel's 6.70 in qualifying didn't get any attention. His first-round win was a 6.71 over Gary Hazen's 6.73, but then, in round two, the car woke up and cracked off a 6.01 (Low ET) to beat Dennis Baca. He then beat Denver Schutz and Ron Attebury with a 6.60/213.27 to meet with Jake Johnston, who was driving Keeling and Clayton's car. McDaniel smoked the tires in their final round match-up, and Jake was long gone with a 6.28 for the victory. It was still a strong showing for the Chevy team. The team's final NHRA national event was the World Finals in Ontario, where Rance qualified #11 at 6.040/236.84. He dropped a round-one decision to Jeb Allen, 6.262/227.84 to 6.406/221.67.
