Notes: When Gene Adams picked a driver to race his gas dragster after Leonard Harris was killed, he picked a good one-Tom McEwen. McEwen began the season with a TE victory at Lions on Jan. 8, turning 9.34 at 176.47 mph. They ran the car a few times in the first quarter of the year but retired the dragster on a good note at Lions on Mar. 13. McEwen waded through five rounds in Top Eliminator to come out on top with a win with best times of 8.97 and 169.49 mph. That was the final race for that car, but Adams went to work building something special. The new car was ready for the June 17 race at Lions. On just its second run during time trials, McEwen clocked an impressive 8.97 at 169.82 mph. He came out on top with a TE victory-first time out. That was repeated for much of the rest of the '61 season. The next week he took a TE win at 8.84 and 171.45 mph and, in addition, bested Don Prudhomme in a two-out-of-three match race. The next day, June 25, he took TE at San Fernando with 9.03 at 178.50 mph. Back at Lions on July 1, he took TE runner-up with 8.94 at 170.13 mph. A week after that, he returned to his winning ways at Lions with an 8.99 TE win on July 8. A week after, he got another TE victory at Lions with 8.81 at 173.41 mph. There didn't seem to be anything stopping him from extending the streak. When the Olds engine needed repair, they would swap it out for a blown Chevy motor, but that was infrequent. On Aug. 19 at Lions, he set a national ET record with 8.62 and 173.04 mph. He towed the car back to Indianapolis for the U.S. Nationals and took runner-up in the AA/D class to Pete Robinson, clocking 8.90 and 168.53 mph. Notes: Tom was driving for Ed Donovan on June 14 at Lions for the UDRA Fueler race. It was an eight-car field and Tom qualified #7 with an 8.42. He picked up to 8.20/185.18 in the first round, to beat Don Moody's quicker 8.17/190. An easy 8.34 advanced in the semifinals when Frank Cannon was unable to run after blowing his engine in the first round. In the final, McEwen was to face James Warren's little Chevy. Unfortunately, the Chevy lost fire and Tom singled for the win with an 8.46/179.28.

Notes: McEwen was at Fontana on September 25, where he made three exhibition runs. His times were 9.63/152.54, 9.60/154.63, and an out-of-shape 11.89/145.16. Rear-engine blown fuel. This replaced the Cuda he crashed earlier in the year. Tom sold the car to Fred Goeske in 1966. The photo is actually from early 1966 but reflects the late 1965 second car. Don Montgomery's "Dragster and Funny Car Memories" book quotes unattributed times of 8.88/178.92. Per Chris Martin, Tom ran 8.82/171 at Lions on the night that Dyer ran the great 8.63. Long Beach CA 1965 (2/66 Super Stock & Drag Illustrated).

Notes: Tom was the first to top 205 at Lions, and he did it while driving for Lou Baney. Working as McEwen's mechanic was tough. Jim Ward was Tom's head wrench when he started driving for Baney, but after the Bakersfield March Meet, he quit, so John Garrison took his place. He lasted as crew chief until May '66. McEwen qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.90/202.24. He fouled away a 7.98/197.80 against Bill Alexander in the first round. The following week (February 13), he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. A solo 8.43/171.10 advanced in the opening round when Joe Schubeck lost fire. But a late 7.99/205.46 (Top Speed and a new track record) fell to Bill Leavitt's 8.09/196. He was back at Lions on February 20 for the UDRA Grandnationals. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 7.76/200.88 qualified #4. Unfortunately, a broken magneto in the first round spoiled any chances of winning. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Tom's 7.78/200.44 qualified #13 in the 64-car field for Saturday's race. He lost to Tommy Ivo early. He qualified for Sunday's race but lost early again. After not doing too well at Bakersfield, he made up for it on March 14 by winning over a sixteen-car field at Fontana. His 7.82 qualified second behind Nando Haase's 7.78. After that, he was never headed. He had Low ET of the first round with a 7.75/194.91 that beat Del Fisher's 8.09/185. A 7.70/201.34 (Top Speed) defeated Jack Ewell's 8.09/189 in round two, and in the semifinal, he eased it through when Dan Brechtal fouled against him. He went up against Dave Babler in the final, and the "Goose" set Low ET in winning with a 7.66/200.88 over Babler's 7.88/193. Of course, after running so well, he was back at Fontana the next weekend. It didn't go as well. A 7.91 in the opening round beat John Wilson's 8.13/193 before a rare double disqualification happened in round two. His opponent, Ron Hampshire, failed to fire, and McEwen's car broke, so both were out. Breakage was also a problem on March 27 at Lions, where the car broke against Don Hampton in round one. The following day he went to Pomona for the UDRA race. Thirty cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Tom's 7.86 qualified #3. Larry Faust fouled against him in the opening round, and in round two, his 7.81/196.50 defeated Rick Stewart's 7.80/200. In the semifinal, his 8.04/195.22 fell to eventual winner Leavitt's 7.80/193. Shortly after that (April 17), it was back to Lions for another sixteen car show. Tom's 7.85/200.44 qualified second to Don Prudhomme's 7.78/197. He then ran 8.04/183 in the opening round, a 7.90 over an out-of-shape Ron Hampshire and 7.92/198.22 to beat Danny Ongais' 8.10/155 in the semifinal. He lined up against Roy Thode in the final, and then he fouled. To add insult to injury, Thode's car broke, and he had to push it across the line for the victory. Tom was also active on the match race trail between all these racing events. May 1 saw him take on Prudhomme in a best of three at Lions. Tom's 7.82/178.57 beat Don's late 7.56/204 in the "Hawaiian." In the second race, the "Goose" shut off to 8.25/123.45 while the "Snake" ran 7.76/202 to even up the match. In the final race, McEwen got off the line first, and his 7.84/196.50 held on to win over Prudhomme's quicker 7.62/203. On May 8, he beat Ongais two straight at Lions with a best of 7.92/184.42. He competed at the UDRA Memorial Day Championships at Fontana, where his 7.70 qualified #5 for the show. In the first round, his tire-smoking 8.08/201.34 lost to Bob Downey's 7.97/196. In the first week of June, he was back at Lions. In the first two rounds of eliminations, he ran 8.02/196 and 8.05 before he fouled away a 7.98/184.80 in the semifinal against Faust. The following day, he qualified #1 for an eight-car show at Riverside with a 7.87/154.37. In round one, he shut off to 8.44 in a loss to John Mulligan's 7.95. McEwen qualified #1 at Riverside for the 32-car show for the HRM Championships with a 7.52/211.76 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the opening round, his 7.64/203.16 beat Kenny Safford's 7.73/205, but he fouled against Paul Sutherland in round two. He was runner-up to Ongais on July 16 at Carlsbad. After an easy first-round win, he was quick off the line in the second round, where his 7.84/202.24 beat Rick Stewart's better 7.79. McEwen received a "bye run" in the semifinal before losing to Ongais in the final. He went back to Carlsbad on August 6, facing Ongais in the opening round. McEwen's car blew a rear end, and Ongais ended up crossing the centerline, so both were disqualified. On August 13, Tom drove the car to a win at Carlsbad, where his 7.63 (Low ET) at 208.80 stopped newly licensed Bob Mayer in the final. He had earlier run 209.30 for Top Speed of the meet. On September 25, he was doing double-duty as he was driving the dragster and the "Hemi-Cuda" at Fontana.
