Notes: Rear engine blown fuel. This car was run by McEwen in 1965 and into '66. He had crashed an earlier one in 1965. McEwen set Top Speed at the 1966 Winternationals at 170.45. He then sold the car to Fred Goeske. McEwen drove the car at first for Goeske, before turning driving over to him. Goeske ran this car into 1968 season. | Tom set Low ET and Top Speed at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals on February 13 with a 9.21/178.92 blast. Notes: We have McEwen driving this car in'66. In'67, he started the year at the Winternationals in the Super Mustang unblown dragster. Lou Baney ran a Ford dealership, and early in'66, he was running a Chrysler Hemi. After McEwen had won the HRM Championships, a Ford deal was secured. Ford's deal with Lou was different from its other SOHC users as Ed Pink was in charge of building the engines, and Ford hoped to sell them through him. Ed was able to make the "cammer" competitive with the Hemi, and his only fault with it was that if you burned a piston on had to pull the heads for any reason, there was not enough time between rounds to get it done. So you needed to install another "bullet" for the next round. Also, the chain driving the cams changed between the two at high rpm. It was very hard to degree the cams, but Pink obviously got it right. The 7.596 was run at Indy in '66. On October 8, Tom was at Lions for the UDRA race. He came off the trailer and ran 7.57/206.42. A better 7.47/209.30 moved him up in qualifying. His 7.57/206.88 beat Dwight Salisbury in the first round, but in round two, his 7.55/196.92 lost to Jack Ewell's quick off the line 7.67/196. At the NHRA World Finals, Tom ran 7.45/201.78 and made it to the semifinal before losing to Dave Beebe. | Also 7.54/203.16 at Lions Drag Strip 8/06/66. - Danny White |

Notes: Ran 7.74 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships, 7.67 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. | Tom was at Carlsbad for the NHRA Division 7 Opener on April 3. McEwen ran good, hitting 7.58/206.88 and 7.66/199.10 to reach the semifinals where he faced Dave Beebe. Tom's 7.78 advanced to the final when Beebe fouled. He had another tough customer in the final, Tommy Allen. But the "Goose" was up to the task running 7.53 (Low ET) at 210.28 for the victory. Another win came on April 24 at Pomona for a Pro Fuel Circuit race. It was another sixteen-car show and in the first round, he beat Ron Rivero with a 7.76/196.50. A second round 7.75 beat Rick Stewart and in the semifinals, Tom's 7.62 took out Jim Dunn. This put him into the finals against Beebe. It was a close race, but McEwen's 7.61/204.54 beat Dave's 7.64/208. |

Notes: The project was led by Ford, Logghe dragster chassis with coil-over suspension (funny car style at the time) semi-streamlined body. Injected 427 SOHC with C-6 automatic. I think this car was classified as S/XS at '67 Winternationals. The project did not pan out.; Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Direct Drive backed Tirend Activity Booster. For the 1969 season, Tom bought the Candies and Hughes '68 Barracuda (yes, a Logghe car - C&H would go to Don Hardy for '69), installed a Tim Beebe 392 with direct drive, and qualified no. 1 at the Winternationals. At '69 Springnationals, he was runner-up to Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mach 1. He only ran this car one year. The next year would see the Hot Wheels saga begin. | At the AHRA Winternationals, Tom failed to qualify, running a best of 7.97/193. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.79/193.96 (Low ET) but lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.60 in the first round, with an 8.96. At Bakersfield, Tom ran a first-round 7.78/196.93 (Top Speed) over Ray Alley (8.18/187.50), but a second 7.78/196.73 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.70/195.65 in the semifinal. He failed to qualify at Lions on March 22. On May 4 at Aquasco, he lost to Tommy Grove's 7.91/191.08 in the first round, with an 8.23/164.53. On May 11, he lost a match race against Charlie Allen at Suffolk. At the AHRA Springnationals, a 7.82 qualified him fifth, and he made it to the semifinal before Leonard Hughes ran a 7.52/202.70 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Tom's 7.70/188. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified third with a 7.78/184.04 and ran 7.63/185.56 over Gas Ronda, a 7.67 over Sid Foster's quicker 7.60, and a semifinal 7.57 over Fritz Callier. A broken rear end ended his chances against Ongais in the final. On June 22 at Aquasco, he lost to Lew Arrington's 8.07/187.88 in the first round, when he smoked the tires to an 8.71/152.28 loss. On July 9 at Atco's fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Frank Oglesby's 7.76/194.80 beat him in the first round. At Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 16, a first-round 8.07/181.44 failed to beat Jim Liberman's 7.50/177.86 (Low ET). On August 2, Tom singled in the first round, over Ron Rivero at the PHR Championships, who shut off in the K&G Mustang. But in the second round, he broke, giving Dick Loehr a solo into the semis. At the US Nationals, Tom qualified in both Top Fuel and Funny Car with his 'Cuda qualified tenth with a 7.478/206.42. But when good friend John Mulligan had his crash, Tom left to be at the hospital with him. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Tom started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. This was not a good meet for him as he failed to qualify both his Funny Car and his Top Fuel Dragster. He had more problems at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he failed to qualify the Top Fuel car. McEwen went to Lions for an eight-car show the week after Pomona. His 7.30 qualified #7, but a 7.21/219.51 in the first round, lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.92/211. Tom's next stop was at OCIR the following day for the second All-Pro race. There were 35 cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car field and McEwen's 7.18/217.38 held on to the "bump" spot. But once again he lost in the first round, this time his 7.25/202.24 lost to eventual winner Larry Dixon's 6.85. Things went more McEwen's way at Lions on March 8. There he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.99 and then improved to 6.89/214.79 in the first round, over Butch Maas. His times kept on getting lower as a 6.84/206.89 beat Bob Downey in the semifinals. He capped it off by setting Low ET in the final while beating James Warren for the money with a 6.78/215.82. At Riverside for the HRM Championships, Tom's 7.16 qualified #27. He picked up to 7.02/215.01 in the first round, to beat Leland Kolb, but a 6.91/217.91 in round two lost to Stan Shiroma's quick-leaving 6.98/228. He lost in the first round, at the final OCIR All-Pro race where his 7.19/209.30 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.84/221. Green Valley Raceway hosed the California vs. Texas race in April. It was a four-car show with McEwen and Nicoll facing Bobby Langley and Vance Hunt. McEwen led the California team to victory with a best of 7.10/200. Tom had another strong run at Lions on April 12. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.79. A first-round 6.82/217.81 beat Warren's 7.05/221 while a 6.87/217.39 in the semifinals beat Gary Cochran. He ended up running Prudhomme in the final, but the "Snake" set a 6.67 track record at 220 to beat his 6.83/193.12 runner-up effort. |

Notes: Tom McEwen got one of the biggest sponsorship deals for the '70 season. He and Don Prudhomme went to Mattel Toys and linked their FCs with the "Hot Wheels" corporation. It brought the "Mongoose" and the "Snake's" names into households everywhere and drew many up-and-coming fans. McEwen debuted this Duster at Beeline on January 25 for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, both he and Gordon Mineo ran 8.40's with the "Goose" getting the win. In the second round, his 7.89 lost to eventual winner Tommy Grove. On February 14, he was at an eight-car show at Lions. He beat Bob Pickett's quicker 7.35 in the first round, with a 7.41, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and shut off against Don Prudhomme. The following week (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. He broke a transmission and was unable to run. He was back at Lions on March 8 for the second AHRA Grand American race. He failed to reach the finals. The Duster was in its first final on March 28 at the last OCIR All-Pro race. In the first round, he beat Roger Wolford in Jack Chrisman's Mustang, with a 7.80/190.27. In round two, a 7.65/194.38 beat Warren Gunter's 8.87. He had a close one in the semifinals when his 7.48/196.07 beat Mike Snively's 7.51/191 in Jim Annin's Challenger. In the final, he lost to Dave Beebe. At Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships, Tom fouled in the first round against Ron Umbach. He lost in the first round, at the next AHRA race as well, the Grand American at Frontier Raceway. He ran 7.92/189.07 in the first round, which lost to Mart Higginbotham's 7.70/187. McEwen was at Bristol on June 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. A first-round 8.01 beat Shirl Greer, but in round two, his 7.79/171.79 lost to Dick Harrell's 7.64/176. A week later (June 14), he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #8. He had problems in the first round and shut off on the line giving future superstar Kenny Bernstein a solo in Ray Alley's Cougar. Tom participated in a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race at LaPlace on June 21. Just before this race, Tom had installed a two-speed transmission in the Duster. The Funny Cars were given a half-second handicap. LaPlace was having trouble with its timing equipment, so the mph clocks were out for this race. Tom lost his first race when his 7.57 fell to Preston Davis' 7.07. In his second race, he had Low ET for the funnies with a 7.41 that beat Richard Tharp's 7.12. In his third race, he fouled away a 7.61 while Ronnie Martin got the win with a 7.03. McEwen was at Capitol for the King of Kings Funny Car Invitational on July 11. In the first round, he was running Clare Sanders in the "Super Camaro," but at half-track, the Duster broke. McEwen kept up a busy match race program during the season, mostly against Don Prudhomme for his "Hot Wheels" sponsor. On July 26, the two met at Union Grove, where Prudhomme won three straight with a best of 6.94/214 compared to Tom's best of 7.25/206.80. At the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, McEwen beat Randy Walls in the first round, 7.56/197.36. He had a close race with Grove's SOHC-powered Mustang in round two. Tom won with a 7.51 over Tommy's 7.52. In round three, he soloed with a 7.47/202.24 when Sid Foster's "Super Ford" broke. His ETs didn't qualify for the final. Tom had some bad luck at Epping on August 2 for the AHRA Grand American held there. He won his first-round race over Al Hanna, but his motor blew, and he had a flash fire that put the car out of competition for the rest of the day. He raced Prudhomme in a best of three at Capitol on August 8 but lost two straight. New York National hosted the AHRA Nationals at the end of August, and Tom made it into the second round before losing to Prudhomme's 7.11/209 with a 7.40/180.36. At Indy for the US Nationals, McEwen made the show with a career-best (for FC) of 7.06 that qualified #8, but in the first round, he lost to Bruce Larson's 7.17 with a 7.212. On September 27, he was runner-up to Leroy Goldstein at US 30's Funny Car Spectacular. OCIR held its East vs. West Funny Car Championships on October 10. McEwen was on the East's team. In his first of three races, he lost to Jim Liberman's 7.22/202 with a 7.56/198.07. In his second race, his 7.44/196.07 lost to Jake Johnston's 6.94/208 in the "Blue Max." He won his last race on a solo when Ken Safford blew a motor on his burnout in the "Mr. Norm" car. Tom ran a 7.09/206.89 single. His times were not good enough to get into the final. Fremont held its own version of the East/West Meet on October 24. Once again, Tom's ETs failed to get him into the finals. As the year was coming to a close, Carlsbad held its Match Race of Champions event. Four cars competed and made three runs against one another. Tom lost to Prudhomme in his first race, and in his second race, he lost a blower and the race to Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. He came back to win his third race with a 7.31/200.88 over Pat Minick's 7.43/192 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At the AHRA World Finals at Beeline on November 15, McEwen kept his bad luck streak alive in AHRA races. In the first round, his engine let go, and he slowed to a 7.69/184.08 loss to Ed McCulloch's 7.23/207. The Duster was getting a little long in the tooth by the time the NHRA Supernationals came around. Tom failed to qualify for the field that had a 7.27 bump spot. Formerly listed 6.80/220.00, but we don't believe this car ever ran a "six" or hit 210. Let us know otherwise. | Best NHRA times were 7.06/204.08. |

Notes: McEwen ran this car twice during the first ten days of January 1971. At Irwindale Raceway's "New Year's Day Funny Car Championship," he was runner-up to Jim Dunn, and at Lions, during the first AHRA Grand American of the year. At Lions, the Goose had Low ET of the Meet with a questionable 6.55. This car was soon replaced with Tom's 1971 ride, a Ramchargers-powered John Buttera Duster. | 5/71 HRM coverage said the dicey 6.55 was an early shut-off at 198.23! True, not intentional on the 'Goose's part. The story was written, without skepticism, by none other than the renowned Ralph Gudahl (sp.) Jr, with vernacular, apostrophe-absent, driver quotations verging on Ring Lardner's gerund-eliminating speech. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Tom debuted this new Ramchargers-motored John Buttera Duster early in the year. We need to confirm that it was the car he raced at Pomona. His 1970 car ran a few January events, including one where he claimed a 6.55 at Lions. Tom had an interesting NHRA season, running both his top fuel and funny car at most meets. Tom was the eighth alternate at Pomona (no times but the bump spot was a 7.306). He qualified #9 at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.968/208.81, but he fouled against Don Schumacher in round one, tossing out a 6.96/207.37 to Don's 6.92/205.21. Tom was the ninth alternate at Indy with a 7.12/204.54 effort. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. At some point in the year, Tom ran 6.67 at Tri-City. |

Notes: Tom had an interesting NHRA season, running both his top fuel and funny car at most meets. Tom qualified #12 at Pomona at 6.866/215.31. In round one, he beat Don Cook, 6.80/212.76 to 7.73/199.55. Tom's car did not start in round two, sending Jim Dunn on a 7.10/164.23. single. At the Dallas Springnationals, Tom qualified #6 at 6.654/220.58. He won round one over Jim Paoli, 6.67/218.44 to 7.19/210.28, and took an easy 11.96/77.85 win in round two when Dennis Baca did not show. John Wiebe took a close 6.60/220.04 to 6.66/178.92 win over Tom in the third round. At the Summernationals, Tom qualified #4 at 6.698/221.67. Unfortunately, he fouled against Bill Hansen in round one, sending Hansen on a 7.15/207.85 win. McEwen missed the field at Indy. His 6.640/222.77 ended up as the third alternate. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year. He also ran 6.62 at Martin, Michigan, and 6.67 at the Irwindale Grand Prix in 1971. |

Notes: Tom McEwen had a very successful season in '72. It started at Fremont's New Year's race. There, he qualified #7 for the eight-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.87 lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.85. He then went to Lions for the Grand Premiere race. Once again, he lost in the opening round; this time, his sleepy 6.85/217.39 lost to Stan Shiroma's 6.94/190. Beeline Dragway was his next stop for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car show, and he lasted until round two, where his 6.85 lost to his "Hot Wheels" teammate, Don Prudhomme's 6.75. Tom qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.91. He beat Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian" in round one, but he lost to low qualifier Pat Foster in round two. He chose not to run his Funny Car at the Bakersfield March Meet. Instead, he devoted his time to the Top Fuel car there. It proved to be a wise choice. He was back at Fremont on March 12 for the AHRA Northern Nationals. His 6.70 qualified #1. The sixteen-car field was short, so he got to take the "odd-lot" solo in round one. In round two, he ran 6.69/184.04 to beat Tom Hoover, but in the semifinal, his 6.71/204.54 lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 6.55/216 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He raced his Top Fuel race at the NHRA Gatornationals. Late in April, he faced Clare Sanders, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for a best-of-three match at Epping. McEwen won the match two straight with times of 6.79/201 and 6.61/200. The 6.61 was a new track record. Shortly after that, he was at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. An opening round 6.93 beat Cogo Eads, but a 6.91 in round two lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.77. He was the #2 qualifier at Tulsa PRA at 6.581/220.04. Tom also won the AHRA Spring Nationals in Denver with a 6.81/205.90. Tom was also on the losing end of the quickest and fastest pass in funny car history when he lost to Pat Foster's 6.29/234.98 blast in the first round of the NHRA Supernationals. Tom qualified fourth at OMS with a 6.43/225.56 and was a slight favorite when meeting the Barry Setzer Vega. While Foster reset the record book, Tom blew an engine, had a big fire, and stopped in the middle of the track, an inauspicious end to a highly anticipated race. Tom won the final event of 1972 at the OCIR All-Pro event on 12/31/72 with a 6.70/221.13 win over Bob Pickett at 7.04/209.79. It was Tom's first funny car win at OCIR. Tom was the fifth qualifier at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 at 6.58. He ran 6.92 to win round one when Mert Littlefield shut off. He won a close one in round two over Omer Carruthers, 6.60 to 6.62. Round three saw him step up to 6.40 to beat Jim Dunn's 6.64. In the final, he took out nemesis Don Prudhomme with an excellent 6.39 to 6.97 drubbing. Although Ed McCulloch seemingly had a more successful year, Tom McEwen was named the 1972 Drag News "Funny Car Driver of the Year." Several late-season successes, notably his victories at the inaugural PRA "National Challenge 72'" and "The Last Drag Race" at Lions Drag Strip, helped convince Drag News to give Tom the year-end award. He ran strong all year after changing from a Ramchargers to an Ed Pink combination. |

Notes: Tom was running both his funny car and his fuel dragster this year (as he had for the past couple of years). His new 215" Garlits car carried the "Mongoose" into the record books. The engine of choice for his dragster was an Ed Pink 482 stroker. A half-inch Moldex crank was used along with Venolia pistons. The cam was a Crower. Larry Bowers supplied the magnesium blower that was 30 lbs lighter than aluminum. He went to OCIR for the third All-Pro race, but his 6.61 best failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He then went to Las Vegas for the National Open. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #2. A 6.71 in the first round beat Phil Soares, and he later set a track record 6.50 before losing out in the competition. McEwen took a big win on March 5 at Bakersfield for the March Meet. He qualified #1 with a 6.55/225.56. In the first round, a 6.44/220.04 beat Gary Southern (6.87/216), and in round two, he took it easy when Paul Gommi fouled against him. A 6.35 (Low ET) disposed of Dwight Hughes, and a semifinal 6.40/232.55 (Top Speed) beat Dwight Salisbury. In the final, he met Carl Olson. Once again, he ran 232.55, this time with a 6.44, beating Olson's 6.54/226 for the victory. He kept up his strong pace by qualifying third with a 6.32/237.46 at the NHRA Gatornationals on March 19. An opening round 6.36/231.95 beat Dick McFarland's 6.43/233, and in round two, his 6.28/229.59 beat Chuck Kurzawa's 6.36/232. In the semifinal, he lost to Don Garlits' 6.15 (Low ET) at 228. Even in losing, Tom ran a strong 6.31/231.95. His next stop was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race held on March 25. Unfortunately, McEwen had a fuel pump fail in the first round, and the car refused to start, giving Wayne King a solo into round two. He then spent a lot of time with his Funny Car before returning behind the wheel of his fueler at Lions for the Pro Fuel Circuit race. Twenty-eight cars were attempting to qualify in the eight-car show, and Tom's 6.38 made the field, but he failed to make it into the final. Tom made it two rounds at Columbus with best times of 6.51/210. He was runner-up to Jeb Allen the NHRA Summernationals with best times of 6.41/220. Tom did well at Indy, making it three rounds and running best times of 6.30/223.88. By Ontario, he was running his funny car again. We need confirmation of the 6.19. Ran confirmed 6.310/223.88 at Indy 1972, 6.28 at Gainesville, 6.51 at Columbus, 6.41 at Englishtown, and 6.30 at Indy. |

Notes: McEwen had a great season in '72 and hoped for more of the same in '73. While he wasn't quite as successful, it was still a pretty good year for the "Mongoose." He started the season on January 21 at OCIR's second All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 6.85, earning him the right to face low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. In their race, Tom's 6.79/215.31 lost to Sush's 6.76/213. The following week (January 28), he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car show, and he ran 6.54/217.91 to qualify #3. An off-pace 7.30/163.04 lost to Stan Shiroma's 6.66/218 in the "Pacemaker" Vega. Tom won the third OCIR All-Pro race over Matsubara in the final. Both had troubles on their runs; McEwen's 7.72/104.77 got the victory over Sush's 8.08/159. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track was in horrible shape, and trying to get a good time in qualifying was tough. Tom ended up as the second alternate for the show, but when the race was postponed twice for rain, Jim Liberman could not stay, so McEwen took his spot in the field. In the opening round, his 7.60 beat Bill Leavitt's 8.36. But in round two, he lost to Al Bergler's holeshot 8.00/201 that beat his 7.72/206. He raced his top fuel dragster at the Bakersfield March Meet but was back in his "flopper" the following week (March 11) at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round, against Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian." He then ran his dragster at the NHRA Gatornationals before returning to the funny at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. McEwen qualified #2 and then ran 7.10/212.76 over Leavitt, a 6.96/213.27 over Dave Beebe, and a 12.71/54.77 over a fouling Chadderton to reach the final against Matsubara. This was McEwen's day as he ripped off a 6.69/222.22 in the final for the victory over Sush's 6.86/221. Tom won Ontario 1973 with best times of 6.500/217.91. |

Notes: Tom started the '74 season by qualifying #4 in the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12 with a 6.57. His first-round 6.64/203.16 beat Joe Lee, but he and Gordon Swearingen, driving Jim Terry's Mustang, both broke in round two. McEwen's coasting 14.95 lost to Swearingen's 12.77. Another 6.57 qualified #13 at the AHRA Winternationals. He improved to a 6.49/225.00 in the first round to beat Richard Tharp's 6.50/204. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.47/195. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's best of 6.70/215.31 failed to qualify, and to add insult, he crashed into the safety net during qualifying. Early in March, he was at Fresno Dragway for its Winter Race of Champions event. It was an eight-car show, and Tom qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. Tom lost their race with a 6.71, but the "Ace" did not get an ET on his run. He won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 31, beating McCulloch in the final with a 6.41/212. In getting there, he ran a 6.50 over Mike Van Sant's 6.66 in the "Hawaiian," a single (6.43) over Don Schumacher, who had lost fire, and a semifinal 6.42 over an out of shape Danny Ongais. It was a strong showing for the "Goose." In mid-April, he had one of the 30 FCs competing at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. Clarence Bailey broke against him in the opening round, and Tom advanced with a 6.91/187.61. He also got a solo in round two, but he hurt the engine during his run and could not return. The following was (April 27), he was at Seattle for the fifth annual Northwest Open. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut down against Kenny Goodell. Tom ran 6.705/215.31 at Pomona, 6.624/220.58 at Columbus, 6.620/216.34 at Englishtown, 6.474/231.36 at Indy, and 6.515/229.00 at NHRA Ontario 10/74. |

Notes: Tom only ran this car a few times in 1974, preferring to stay with the more lucrative funny car. He qualified 5th at the 1974 March Meet with a 6.27/225.56 and lost in the first round, to Tony Nancy after getting out of shape. | Tom was at Sacramento's Grand Opener in February It was an eight-car show and he failed to qualify. He also ran at the Irwindale Fox Hunt race where a 6.30 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. McEwen failed to reach the finals. |

Notes: Is the photo from '75 or '76? - JB | Tom ran really well in his Duster in '75, especially on the AHRA Grand American Series. It didn't start so well when he failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but at Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.32 to qualify #5. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.61/206.89 over Ed's 6.72/197. He lost to Bill Leavitt in the second round. At the Bakersfield March Meet on March second, only 12 Funny Car's showed. Tom qualified #9 with a 6.46/203.16. He fell off to a 6.88 at 164.23 in the first round, and lost to McCulloch. Tom went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American in March. He ran 6.57 (Low ET) to qualify first. In the first round, a 6.62/216.86 beat Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. In the semifinals, he beat Neil Leffler with a 6.58/210.77. The final saw him facing Jake Johnston in the "Pisano & Matsubara" car. It was a close race, but Tom's 6.77/213.27 won over Jake's 6.78/220. He did not enter the NHRA Gatornationals as it was run on the same weekend as the AHRA race. McEwen was at Irwindale in April for the National Funny Car Championships. He beat Gary Southern in the first round, but then failed to appear for his second-round call and was replaced by Southern. In May, McEwen was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show. He and his opponent, Tripp Shumake, smoked the tires in the first round, but Tom's 6.98 came out on top. In the second round, his 6.84/199.11 lost to Dick Custy's 6.74. The AHRA Springnationals was held at St. Louis, and Tom was there running 6.60/201.35 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. A 6.55/203.16 qualified #10 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he went into heavy tire smoke and lost to McCulloch. Tom was the second alternate at Ontario on 10/12/75 at 6.406/230.76. Ran 6.365 205.47 at the US 131 PHR Championships. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/01/75 |

Notes: McEwen showed up at OCIR on March 20 with his new Duster. The paint differed from the '75 cars. He was at OCIR for its Fox Hunt race and was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He made the show, qualifying #13, but he lost to Chris Lane in the opening round. Shortly after, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 opener. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 6.53/217.91 qualified #9. An off-pace 7.48 in the first round lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.14. In April, he was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He lasted until the semi-finals before losing to Tom Hoover. Near the middle of the month, Irwindale held the Coca-Cola FC Championships. This was a big 32-car show that had all cars run two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Tom's 6.61/177.51 in his first race beat Bill Bailey, but he shut down to an 8.86 loss to Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in his second race. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. Early in May, he was back at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.40/223 qualified #3.McEwen beat Lane in round one, but in the semi-final, his 6.50/206 fell to Jake Johnston's 6.42/223. He competed at the AHRA Okie Nationals held in Tulsa. He qualified with a 6.78, and after an easy first-round win, he ran 6.95/219.30 over Johnny White's late 6.80/206 in round two. A tire-smoking 7.78/116.12 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Dale Emery's 6.58/211. Tom did not set the world on fire on the NHRA national event tour, although he was runner-up at Columbus and Englishtown. He ran best times in the 6.30s, hitting 230.17 at the Winters and 230.76 at the World Finals. We need to confirm where he ran 6.13/231.95. We need to verify if the photo is from 1975 or 1976. |

Notes: Began the year in the 1975 car before the new car was completed. Ran 6.46 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/76. | Tom had a good season in '76. It could have been a great season if it wasn't for his old teammate Don Prudhomme. That could be said for a lot of the funny car drivers in '76 as the "Snake" was cleaning up and winning everything. McEwen started the year by winning the Nitro Bowl at Fremont in Jan. All fourteen cars in the field made three runs and the driver with the most wins was declared the winner. Tom started by running 6.52 to beat Jim Dunn, a second-round 6.56 beat Tommy Ivo and a 6.51 in his last race beat Ed McCulloch's close 6.52. He then went to Tucson where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field for the AHRA Winternats. Traction was marginal at best and Tom beat Gary Burgin's 7.02 in the first round, with a 6.99. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.74 loss to Shirl Greer's 6.84. He did not go to Beeline and race the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals McEwen ran a best of 6.37/230.17 that failed to qualify. He then won the OCIR East-West meet the following week. He lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round, at the Bakersfield March Meet. |

Notes: The car that broke the Corvette curse. Also 6.14/233.76 at 77 US Nats. Won IHRA Winternationals 1977. Ran 6.11 at Milan, 6.37 at Gainesville, 6.18 at Columbus, 6.14 at Englishtown, and 6.14 at Indy. | Tom debuted his Corvette at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The car failed to qualify, but it was awarded "Best Appearing Professional Car." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #6, but broke on the line in round two, advancing Roger Lindamood. Things went a little better for the "Goose" the following week (March 20) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show, and the field was "weak," but Tom's Corvette ran well. He qualified #2 with a 6.79/216 behind Shirl Greer, but he soloed with a 9.47 when Wilfred Boutilier was shut off on the line with an oil leak. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.62/216.86 that beat Pete Miner's 7.48 in his Duster. In the final, he ran Greer. Shirl had problems and slowed while McEwen ran a 6.65/216.86 for the victory. A week later (March 27), he was in another final. This time it was at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. He lost in the final, but it wasn't too bad, as how many cars were outrunning Don Prudhomme at the time? His 6.33/229.59 lost to the "Snake's" 6.20/240. On May 1, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to Dick Bourgeois, driving the Creasy Brothers car, in the first round. He was runner-up to Dale Pulde at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 21. On the Memorial Day weekend of May 29 and 30, Tom was at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. All cars ran the first round with the four lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. McEwen's 6.28 made the semis, where he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" with a 6.16/227.27. In the final, he faced Tommy Ivo, and McEwen got the victory with a 6.26/190.67. The next day, they did it again, and once again, Tom qualified for the semifinals, this time with a 6.36. He met Prudhomme in his semifinal race and lost to Don's 6.15/205. The following weekend (June 5), he was at Amarillo for the IHRA World Nationals. He beat Shirl Greer before losing to Ray Sherman in the semifinals. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.18 qualified #5. Tom failed to reach the finals. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove on July 4. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET), and advanced past the first round with a 6.55/171.75 when Ken Safford fouled in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the semifinals, he beat Tom Prock's 6.52/206 with a 6.34/214.28. In the all Corvette final, Tom ran Jerry Boldenow's "Moby Dick." McEwen's 6.28/218.97 came out on top over Jerry's 6.47/225. That was Tom's first win ever in IHRA competition. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, qualifying #2 to Prudhomme with a 6.14/233.16. His only other pass in qualifying was a 6.23. He beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a tire smoking 7.13, but he lost to Sherman in round two when he smoked the tires again to a 7.45. McEwen ran at York US 30 on July 16 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified #1 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.13. In the first round, a 6.24 beat Boldenow's 6.38. In the semifinals, Tom stepped up to a strong 6.11 and still lost to Gary Burgin's 6.13. On July 31, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.31/224 qualified #2 behind Tom Hoover. In the first round, his 6.31/214.79 beat Gene Snow's 6.68/185. Unfortunately, McEwen broke and was unable to run in the semifinals, so Snow got reinstated. He competed at Atco for its Fuel Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs, with the two lowest ETs coming back for the final. Tom lost his first race to Les Cassidy's 6.63 with an off pace 8.93. He won his second race with a 6.68/174 over Arnie Swensen's 6.78/193. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. On August 21, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #2 with a 6.29, but in round one, his fuel pump broke, and opponent Bill Leavitt advanced. At the US Nationals at Indy, McEwen qualified #6 with a 6.14/230.17. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.45/200 in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 6.20/228. In the second round, his 6.24/233.76 lost to Burgin's 6.08/236. He went to Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals on September 18. A 6.48 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he slipped to a 6.60 that lost to Tom Prock's 6.44. He did not go to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. |

Notes: Won INDY. Silver and Black Vette. Also, 6.264 232.55 at 78 Winters and 231.95 at the 1978 Springnationals. Ran 6.05/235.60 in big Indy win over Prudhomme. This car was sold to Dick Moritz, then to Jamie Hopheimer/Whit Bazemore, Donnie Holbrook, and Troy Ray. | McEwen started his season at the OCIR Super Bowl event in February. Unfortunately, he had problems against Raymond Beadle driving the Blue Max, and shut down to a 10.54 loss in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's 6.26/232.55 qualified #5. He beat Dave Condit's 6.45/216 in the first round, with a 6.32/220, and in round two, his 6.42/216 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. It was a good old "Snake vs. Mongoose" semifinal that saw the "Goose" have problems and slow to a 7.63/137, losing to Don Prudhomme's 6.41/229. He then laid low and the "English Leather" Corvette was not seen again until early May when he showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.29/194.80 qualified #3. He improved by a tenth in round one, where his 6.19/216.86 defeated Jim Moore's 6.79/164. He blasted low qualifier Gordie Bonin in the emi-final with a 6.22/221.67, putting the Firebird's 6.41/230 on the trailer. He faced the "Snake" in the final, and the two old pals had a great race that saw Don get the victory with a 6.11/238 over Tom's 6.18/217.91. The following week (May 13), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.20 qualified #4 but in the opening round, he extremely late 6.07/217.91 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.29/229. Shortly after that, he was in Portland for the Oregon Open. It was supposed to be a eight-car show but a field was a couple cars short.McEwen got to solo in the first round, and he did, running 6.19/206.89. For some reason, he was given another solo in the semifinal, and this time he shut down at 6.95. Once again, he was up against Prudhomme in the final. This time, the two didn't get a chance to race, as Tom had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure, so the "Snake" solo'ed with a 10.17 for the win. His next stop was Detroit Dragway for the UDRA North American Grandnationals. All cars ran the first round "qualifying," which had the eight lowest ET cars, regardless of winning or losing, advance to the first round of actual competition. Tom set low ET with a 6.23. In the first round of actual competition, he advanced with a 6.34/194.38. In the semifinal, the car again lost oil pressure,e and the "Goose" had to shut it down on the line against Tom Prock. He ended the month of May at the three-day Drag Racing Olympics at Union Grove. He made sure everyone knew that he was there. On Friday, May 27, he qualified for the final four with a 6.36. In the semifinal, he dropped the Pete Williams-driven "Chi-Town Hustler"'s 6.32 with a 6.29. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the results were the same. Don's 6.14/229 beat his 6.19/221.67. On Saturday, he qualified for the final four with a 6.23. Eighteen cars were attempting to qualify. Tom's time was the third best, but this time the "Snake" got to him in the semifinal. Don's 6.10/236 trailered the Corvette's 6.22/223.32. On Sunday, the field swelled to twenty-four cars. Tom qualified for the final four with a second quickest 6.24. He beat Bob Pickett's 6.43/225 in the semifinal with a 6.32/201.34. Lo and behold, he faced Prudhomme in yet another final round. But this time, the "Snake" got out of shape and had to shut off while McEwen ran 6.28/222.22 for the victory. It was then off to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.41/211.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat a tire-smoking Gene Snow in the opening round with a 6.48/212.76. In the semifinal, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires, but the "Goose's" 7.16 came out on top. He faced his protege, John Collins, in the final. The two had a good race, with the student getting the better of the teacher. Collins' 6.46 took the win over McEwen's 6.67 runner-up effort. That was followed by a trip to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The car got the award for best appearing. This car was more than show, though, and Tom proved it by qualifying second with a 6.16/217.91 behind Prudhomme's 6.07/240. These two would meet in the final (what else is new). McEwen opened up eliminations with a 6.31/216.86 over Bonin's 6.49/223. A second round 6.25/215.31 dispatched Billy Meyer's ailing ride. John Lombardo's 6.26/233 fell to his 6.17/230.76 in the semifinal. The problem was that Prudhomme had won his semifinal heat with a 6.07/241. Tom needed to pick up a tenth for his final round race. He didn't. The two ran almost exactly the same times they had run in the semifinals, with Don's 6.07/240 getting the win over Tom's 6.17/231.95. By this time, McEwen must have been tired of playing second fiddle to the "Snake". The week following the Springnationals (June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. There was no Prudhomme in site as he was racing elsewhere. Tom's 6.36/219 qualified second for the eight-car field behind Snow's 6.26/216. After that, McEwen was unstoppable. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.73 in the "Blue Max" in the first round with a 6.36/219. Like a bracket racer, he ran another 6.36 in the semifinal to beat Hoover's 6.42. He went up against John White in the final, and even though he slowed a bit, to a 6.39/210, he won easily as White had problems and shut down. Both the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" were at Martin, Michigan, on June 24 for the NHRA Division 3 race. Tom's 6.18/217.91 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.09/237. But the two would never run each other. Tom's easy 6.31 in the first round beat alternate, Paul Radici. In the semifinal, his 6.22/216.86 was beaten by Tom Anderson's 6.20/215. The "Snake" would go on to win. Best NHRA speed was 236.84 at Ontario. Formerly listed 241.28. We need to confirm if the Goose ran that speed in 1978 and where. |

Notes: Tom McEwen was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified on the "bump", but lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in the first round. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.30/231.95 qualified #7 and he beat alternate John Force in the opening round with a 6.31/232.55. In the second round, he lost a motor and the race to Hoover. He then went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 race where he got back at Hoover by beating him in the final for the victory. The rain delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals only had an eight-car field. Tom ran 6.46/227.27 to get the last spot in the show, but a first-round 6.43/224.43 lost to Force's 6.40/223. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where his 6.49 qualified #3 in another eight-car show. He beat John Collins before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinal. Next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.31/220.58 qualified #15 and a 6.53/214.28 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.41/233 in the first round. He followed that up with a runner-up finish at the North American Grand Nationals at Detroit. A strong 6.22/217 beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" in round two and a 6.50 beat Len Imbrogno in the semifinal. But a blown engine in the final slowed him to a 7.14/146 that lost to John Pott's 6.66 in the "Mr. Norm" car. On June 24, McEwen was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. He reset the AHRA Funny Car record to 6.08 at 240.00 in the first round, and a semifinal 6.12/236.22 beat low qualifier Johnny White. He faced Hoover in the final who had also been running well and had reset the AHRA speed record to 242. The two both had problems - Hoover shut off and McEwen won with an 8.00. Hoover and McEwen raced against each other quite a bit in '79 and early in July, the two met for a best of three match race at Houston. McEwen won two straight. The first-round saw his 6.36/209.30 beat Hoover's 6.49/178 and a motor blowing 6.41/209.30 won again. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Tom qualified #10 with a 6.23/223.32 and he set Low ET of the first-round with a 6.15 that beat Roy Harris. But he hurt his crank on the run and was unable to show for his second round race against Tripp Shumake. Early in August, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and in the semifinal, set Low ET with a 6.21 to beat Collins. He met Tom Hovland in the final and he overpowered the track, smoking the tires to a 6.72 in a runner-up finish to Hovland's 6.36. Another win came his way at the AHRA World Finals on August 19. There he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals before setting a track record 6.15 at 223.88 in the final to beat a troubled Gordie Bonin at 13.08. He almost got into the "fives" at Indy for the NHRA U. S. Nationals. His 6.01/238.72 qualified #4. McEwen had scored an emotional victory here the year before and was hoping to repeat. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.21/234 lost to eventual winner Bonin’s 6.16/240. He then made the trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. His 6.18/238.72 qualified #8, but in the opening round both he and opponent Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's car ran 6.24 (McEwen at 238.72 again), but Ridings got the win light. The NHRA season came to an end at Ontario Motor Speedway for the World Finals. McEwen qualified #3 with a 6.24/230.76 and a 6.53/229.59 beat former "Hot Wheels" teammate Don Prudhomme's 6.85/229 in the opening round. But in round two, his 6.57/225.56 fell to Ron Colson's 6.35/236 in the "Hawaiian.†McEwen finished tenth in the NHRA season long points standings. | Where was the 243 run? |

Notes: Tom started his season at the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at OCIR in January. It wasn't a great start as although his 6.45/230 in the first round, of eliminations beat Kenny Bernstein, he kicked a couple of rods out of it, and he was done for the day. His next stop was the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field and, in the first round, lost to low qualifier Gary Burgin. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, McEwen qualified #4 with a 6.08/236.84. Unfortunately, he lost to Hank Johnson in the first round. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lasted until round two before his early-shut off 7.83/110 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.23/229.00. In the first round, he had problems and shut down to a 10.62 loss to Raymond Beadle's 5.99 in the "Blue Max." In April, he was at OCIR for a 64-car show. A first-round 6.23/227.84 lost a close one to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" at 6.22/235. A runner-up finish followed that at the Seattle Opener. The race was run Chicago-style, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. It was an eight-car show, and he singled with a 6.20/225 in the first round, when Jim Moore broke. In round two, Tom lost to Colson's 6.17 with a quicker 6.15. The times qualified both for the final. The "Mongoose" smoked the tires in the final, and his 6.46/169.81 lost to Colson's 6.15/238. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race, where he qualified #3 with a 6.09/231.95. However, it rained after qualifying, and the race was postponed. He was unable to come back and run on the rain date. McEwen qualified #11 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.23/234.98. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," who advanced with a 6.21. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Tom set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49/221.14. But he had a strange first-round race with Larry Gould that saw both cars leave the track. Normally both are disqualified, but for some reason, Gould advanced, and McEwen was out. He failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shortly after that, he was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.25 qualified #3, and he got to make an easy solo in the first round, when Paul Gordon broke. The old "Hot Wheels" teammates faced each other in the semifinals, and his 6.35/227 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.28/218. |

Notes: Coors was so happy with McEwen in '80 that they stepped up with more cash and a tractor-trailer for '81. Tom was the fourth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 6.31/230.76. He did better at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.368/226.70 qualified #7. An opening round 6.42/216.86 beat Bryan Raines' 6.47/220. Unfortunately, a 6.32 in round two lost to Bob Pickett's 6.27. The following week (March 15), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 6.29/232.55 (Top Speed) qualified #3. But in round one, the car went into hard tire shake and he shut down to a 13.11 in a loss to Raines' 6.34. He was back at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional in May. It was another eight-car field and Tom's 6.41/218.97 qualified #6. He beat Tom Ridings in round one, with a 6.47/231.36, but in the semifinals he had problems and shut off against Craig Epperly. Things went his way on May 30 at NHRA Western Regional at Bandimere. He ran 6.55/214.79 and 6.36/223.88 to beat Clint Miller and Rob Williams to reach the final where he faced Gary Densham. McEwen's 6.35/229.00 got the victory over Densham's 6.48/209. |
