Notes: Ray ran 6.825/204.08 at the Tulsa PRA race. He qualified fifth at the 1972 IHRA Nationals (Dallas International) with a 6.59. This was Raymond Beadle's first Funny Car ride. It was also the first Funny Car built by the chassis company, T-Bar. The owner of T-Bar, Henry Schroeder, built the 115" chassis as well as the aluminum sheet metal work. Owner Mike Burkhart spent $20,000 to put the car together. It was built in just 60 days. The Vega had an Ed Pink-built 426 Hemi that used a 1/2" stroker crank from Moldex to give it a displacement of 484 cubic inch M/T rods held Forgedtrue pistons. The cam was from Crowe. A Cragar blower drive and manifold were used, and Marc Danekas prepared the GMC 6/71. On top sat an Enderle injection unit. A Lenco two-speed delivered the power, but to a 5.14 to the ground. Larry Sellers sprayed on the purple, yellow, and white paint. National Dragster stated in an article that Beadle had driven this car to a best of 6.51 in '73. |

He then stepped up to a 6.449/226.70 to defeat a fouling Pat Dakin, who ran 6.41/214. The eventual winner and world champ Jim Walther beat Raymond in the semifinals, 6.46/227.84 to 7.91/124.30. Raymond also ran7.06 at Lubbock Dragway in 1972. |

Notes: After driving for Mike Burkhart in '72, Raymond Beadle jumped behind the wheel of one of Don Schumacher's ‘Cudas in '73. He was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #17 in the 32-car field with a 6.71/222.22. A first-round 6.94/176.81 lost to Pat Foster's 6.57/231. Things didn't go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There were 58 cars trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Raymond's best was good for the tenth alternate. Early in June he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.85 and in the opening round, beat Charlie Therwhanger with a 6.83/207.85. A second round 6.82 took out Larry Christopherson, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Dale Pulde driving Mickey Thompson's Grand Am, in the semifinals. He went to Tri-City soon after that, for a best of three match with the "King Cobra" which saw Beadle win three straight with times of 7.15/199.55, 6.84/206.42, and a solo 6.76/217.39. Early in July he won the AHRA Grand American race at Kansas City. He qualified #3 with a 6.70 then ran 6.88 to beat Gene Snow. In round two he stopped Cogo Eads with a 6.67. In the semifinals, he was matched against Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" lost oil pressure and had to shut off so Beadle soloed into the final. There he ran Jim Nicoll and both had traction problems, but Raymond's 7.39/223.88 got the victory over Jim's 7.59/189. | He ran 6.67/224.70 at the Lebanon Valley Coke race. |

Notes: Raymond won the 1974 AHRA Winternationals beating Don Prudhomme in the final. He did not qualify a the NHRA Winternationals, however. Raymond was at Atco Dragway in May for its Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.67/225.56 (Top Speed)defeated Pete Hill's 6.98/200. In the semifinal, a 6.65/207.85 beat the "Pabst" Charger's 7.14. He faced Pee Wee Wallace in the final, and the two had a great race that had Wallace's 6.57/214 come out on top over Beadle's better 6.55 (Low ET) at 225.56. He went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Beadle won the Funny Car Spectacular at Englishtown on July 3. Twelve cars ran the first-round, with the four lowest ETs moving into the semifinals. In the first round, Raymond's 6.59/210.77 beat Fred Goeske and advanced into the semis. There, a 6.77/161.87 got him into the final when Billy Meyer's Mustang II broke on his burnout. He went up against Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car in the final. Beadle's 6.65/192.71 beat Prock's 6.72/213 for the victory. Back at Englishtown on July 14 for the NHRA Summernationals, things didn't go as well as he failed to qualify, ending up as the second alternate. I had to actually show this slide (the only one related to drag racing) to hundreds of Air Force trainees for years before they decided in 1985 to turn in the program and destroy the same at Norton AFB, Calif., because of the content the photo. Notes: Beadle started his season at Fremont for the New Year's Day Funny Car race. Things didn't go so well as in his first race; his 7.44 lost to Ed McCulloch's 7.21 in a tire-smoking battle. He was still having trouble getting hooked up in his second race, and his 7.26 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.41. At the Irwindale Grand Premiere race on January 5, he qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. His easy 6.73/205.94 advanced when Dale Pulde broke on the line in the first round. In round two, he blew an engine but advanced when opponent Neil Leffler was shut off on the line with an oil leak. The "Blue Max" crew installed another engine for the semifinal match against Jim Dunn, but Beadle smoked the tires and lost to Jim's 6.46. Surprisingly, Raymond failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Still, three cars could not answer the first-round call, so Beadle got into the show as an alternate. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost to Dunn again. The team failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Everything fell into place at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Raymond qualified #1 with a 6.39 and made his way to the final against Kosty Ivanof. There he ran the breed's best numbers, a 6.36/219.51, to take the crown over Kosty's 6.63/202. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.47/215.86 qualified #6. An opening round 6.73/211.76 beat Bill Leavitt who smoked the tires, and a second-round 6.59/218.97 beat Billy Meyer, who was driving for Gene Snow. Beadle's 6.78 lost to Tom Prock's 6.68 in the "Custom Body" car in the semifinals. He was in the final of the next IHRA event as well, the World Nationals at Amarillo. Beadle qualified #2 behind Pulde driving the "Eastern Raider." These two would work their way into the final, where Pulde stopped Beadle for the victory. Another runner-up finish came at the AHRA Southwest Grand American at Tulsa. Beadle got out of shape in the final, and his shut off 8.85/113.35 lost to Dale Emery's 6.63/218 in Gene Snow's Vega. Ironically, in a couple of years, Emery was working with the "Blue Max" team. In May, Beadle's next victory came at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Beadle qualified #1 and beat Dennis Lockaby with a 7.45. In the second round, his 6.82/205.01 beat Denny Savage's 6.87/220, and a semifinal 6.72 beat Pulde. This got him into the final against Shirl Greer, and while Greer was having problems, Beadle set Low ET with a winning 6.58 at 214.28. At the AHRA Springnationals held at St. Louis, Raymond qualified #1 at 6.41/222. He set Low ET with a 6.33/212 to beat Emery in the first round, but lost to eventual winner Dick Custy in the semifinals. A week later (June 8), the team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.51/213.77 qualified the "Max" #8 in the field. Beadle beat a tire-smoking Pee Wee Wallace in the first round, with a 6.49/210.28. In round two, his 6.44/225.00 took out Emery's stout 6.46/217. He kept the pressure up in the semifinals, turning a 6.44 to beat McCulloch's 6.51. His final round foe was Prudhomme. Don had set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.29, but he was getting slower during eliminations while Beadle had been getting quicker. The "Snake" had run 6.31, 6.40, and a tire-smoking 6.84 to reach the final. The "Blue Max" was loaded for bear (Snake?) for the final, and it was expected to be a good race. It was for the photographers, at least. Just after leaving the line, Beadle started going into a wheelstand. As the front end lifted, the body released from the chassis and went end over end onto the track. The chassis came down hard, but Raymond got it stopped, and he was OK. We needless to say, the "Snake" drove to his third straight NHRA victory. Beadle got a measure of revenge at Cincinnati, Ohio, for the third NHRA Division 3 race. These two would meet again in the final there. Beadle showed that he had some upstairs horsepower by taking Top Speed at 229.08, and in the final, his 6.43/219.51 beat Prudhomme's troubled 7.19/147. It was then off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Beadle qualified #1 with a 6.42/214 and looked like a sure bet to win after running 6.43 over Kenny Safford and 6.53 over Pulde. But in the semifinals, he burned the tires off it, and his 6.66 lost to eventual winner Snow's 6.36 (Low ET). Gene was returning to the driver's seat after his back operation. The "Max's" next win came at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove. A final round 6.47/174.08 got the victory over Pat Foster in the "Chicago Patrol." They did not have a good outing at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Beadle only qualified #12 with a 6.55/215.31, and in the first round, he had a tire-smoking dual with Jim Liberman that saw them both run 7.02 (Beadle at 209.79), but "Jungle" got the win and would go on to win the race. Near the end of July, the "Blue Max" started its Northwest swing. The team was at Portland for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Championships. This was a race that had all cars run three rounds of racing. Beadle won his first race with a 6.50/214 over Jeff Courtie, and in his second race, he faced Jerry Ruth. Almost as soon as the "Max" started the northern tour, these two developed a rivalry. In this race, Ruth took the win with a 6.38 over Beadle's 6.52. The third race was worth the price of admission as he took on Liberman, and it was a great race as Raymond set Low ET with a 6.28 over "Jungle Jim's" strong 6.42. The next stop was at Edmonton, Alberta, for the Funny Car Spectacular on July 30. It was another three-round affair. Beadle beat Russell Long in the "Sundance" with a 6.56/200 in his first race, and he soloed with a 6.42/202 in his second race when Norm Wilcox failed to get the "Hawaiian" fired. The last race saw the tensions rise as Beadle got out of shape and crossed the centerline, sideswiping Gene Snow. Luckily, the damage was light to both cars. Then came the Seafair Championships at Seattle. It was another three-round, 32-car show with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Things didn't start so well when the Mustang II broke a rear end in the first race against Courtie. But after that, the "Max" was back. A 6.25/227.27 in his second race beat Ruth's 6.49/215. A third-round race wasn't held due to the track's 11:00 pm curfew, but Beadle's 6.25 held up as one of the two Low ET cars to race in the final. The other finalist was Liberman, who ran a 6.28. "Jungle" attempted a fire burnout just before staging in the final, but the car bogged out from lack of oxygen and almost stalled out in the fire. Due to this, he never got his tires properly warmed up, and he smoked to an 8.74 runner-up finish. He would have been hard-pressed anyway to catch Beadle, who set both ends of the track record with a winning 6.22/230.76. The "Blue Max" team did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were at Firebird Raceway for the fourth annual Night Fire 500 race. Unfortunately, Beadle failed to make it into the final. Another win for the team came at the IHRA Nationals held at Dragway 42 in mid-August. A 6.67/207.35 qualified #3, and Beadle improved to 6.44/208.33 in the opening round to beat Rodger Hamrick. The ET's continued to drop in round two, where his 6.41/220.04 advanced when Tom Hoover broke just off the line. In the semifinals, a 6.49/182.55 took care of Donnie Plunkett. He faced Denny Savage behind the wheel of the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Savage had run 6.42 in his semifinal win. But Savage took a chance on the line in the final and fouled while Raymond ran Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.25 (track record) at 227.84. Then came the team's big victory at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. This was Beadle's first NHRA National event win. He qualified #1 with a 6.144/223.32. In round one, a 6.23/220.04 beat Gary Burgin's 6.43/218. In round two, Gene Snow fouled against him, so Beadle advanced with a 6.31 at just 188.28. John Lombardo smoked the tires against him in the semifinal, and Beadle won with a 6.21/218.44. He had the edge over Prudhomme going into the final as the "Snake" had run 6.45 in his semifinal win. Everything went his way in the final, a 6.16 backed up the 6.14 for a new NHRA record, and his speed on the pass was 226.70. Don's 6.26/224 gave him the runner-up spot. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. An off-pace 7.31 qualified #12, but Beadle set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.55/220.58 that beat Paul Smith. Things didn't go well in round two, where an engine let go on the line giving his opponent, Charles Lee, a solo into the semifinal. Did Raymond run 6.07 somewhere this year? We listed that formerly. It did not occur at an NHRA national event. Best NHRA national event speed was 226.70, run in the semis at the Gators (loss), and finals at Indy (win). Won IHRA Union Grove 75 with a Low ET 6.34. Won the 1975 IHRA championship by a wide margin with four national event wins. |

Notes: Raymond was the first to capitalize on selling merchandise such as T-shirts and halter tops (with free installation). They sold for between $5 and $10 each, and they sold lots (reportedly more than $100,000 of shirts, hats, and halters). The team started the season at Fremont for the sixth annual Nitro Bowl. All cars were to make three runs, with the winner determined by the number of wins in competition. In Beadle's first race, he smoked the tires to a 10.40/92.30 loss to Bob Pickett's 8.56/148. In the second race, he improved to 6.56 to beat Jim Dunn's 6.66, and his best ET, a 6.48, beat Roger Garten's 6.51 "Warhorse."The team then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premier event. Beadle only qualified #13 with a 6.94/180, but in the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.27 at 216, then beat Bryan Raines. But in round two, the "Blue Max" had problems, and Raymond shut down to 8.35 in a loss to Tom McWen's 6.31/229. Then, it was off to OCIR for the season opener. Beadle lasted until the second round, where he lost a motor and the race to John Collins driving Tom McEwen's second Duster. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.21/200.01 qualified #3, but he lost to Tom Prock's 6.30/221 with a 6.45/215.31 in the first round. At the Gatornationals, Beadle again qualified #3, this time with a 6.34/222.22. Once again, he lost in the first round, when he smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 and lost to Bob Pickett's 6.57/225 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. In March, the team was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Beadle set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.37 at 206.89 over Paul Smith. In the semifinals, his 6.57/220.58 was beaten by Prock's 6.57/209. Then things clicked for the team: the "Blue Max" went on its longest undefeated streak. It started at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships on April 4, which he won over Russell Long in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Raymond also set Low ET at 6.22. The streak lasted until June 13 at the NHRA Springnationals, where he finally lost when he fouled against McEwen in the semifinals. It should be mentioned that he was at Irwindale on April 17 for the Coca-Cola Championships. While he didn't win, he didn't get beaten either. All cars made two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Beadle soloed with a 6.51/188 in the first round, and his 6.45/172 beat McEwen in the second round. His times weren't good enough to reach the final. Between these races, he won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR over Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza with a 6.28/227.27 after earlier qualifying #2 with a 6.25/227. He won the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway. He qualified #1 with a 6.34 (Low ET) at 217.81 and beat Dale Emery in Mike Burkhart's Monza in the final with a 6.70/217.39 to Emery's 6.78/224. (Emery would eventually join the "Blue Max" team in a few years). On May 2, Beadle won the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo. He ran times of 6.55/205.82 and 6.37/219.61 (Top Speed) to get into the final, where he met and beat Long's 6.82/164 with a 6.36 (Low ET) at 216.16. He stopped at Fremont for a ten-car show and set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.14 that beat Dave Uyehara. His 6.26/215 beat Johnston in the second round, and he went up against Don Prudhomme for the title. It was as good as it gets as both ran 6.18 (Beadle at 229.00), but the win went to the "Max." Another IHRA win came on May 23 at Atlanta International for the Dixie Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and Beadle ran 6.41, 6.51, and a semifinal 6.49 that beat Gary Burgin's quicker 6.48. In the final, he ran 6.42 for the victory over Ron O'Donnell's 6.50. Another win came on June 5 when he won the NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/220.04 before running 6.40/220 to beat Shirl Greer in the final. Then came the Springnationals, where he fouled out. Raymond's best NHRA times were 6.075/229.00 at Indy. Did he run 235.60 somewhere this year? | Won the 64 FCs in August at Seattle. Beadle ran 6.31 and 6.34 to qualify for the final against Mike Miller (6.41). Last year of the CC Cavalcade. Miller beat the engine-losing Max to the finish line to drunken cheers but swerved outside the boundary line. Raymond also won the Fremont leg of the PDA series over Johnston/Pisano. At both the Fremont PDA and SIR 64, the Max tested a larger, rectangular, polished Crower injector, the same type used by Garlits in '78. Notes: LOW and mean. The OCIR 6.01 made Beadle the second quickest Funny Car in the sport after Prudhomme's 5.98 at Ontario 1975 and 5.97 at Indy 1976. | Beadle started the season at the OCIR Opener in January. The car ran great, hitting 6.18/228 in the first round, over Tommy Ivo and a semifinal 6.13 to advance to the final. There he beat Ed McCulloch with his track record 6.01 at 234.37. It was an excellent start to the year. He then went to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 with a 7.61. The track was terrible, and Tom Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.73. But the "Blue Max" crew got "her tuned up" in the first round, where his 6.52/223.88 beat Jim West. Beadle set Low ET in round two with a 6.48 to beat Steve Harris, but in the semifinals, the rear-end let go, and Beadle lost to eventual winner John Collins. Then it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18/232.55 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.14. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, with a 6.15/231.95, and a round two 6.27 beat Hoover's quicker 6.19. Another good light in the semifinals made his 6.41 a winner over Gordie Bonin's 6.40. This put Beadle into the final against Prudhomme. It looked like the "Blue Max" faltered in the final, but it was really just the "Snake" running a great 6.03/247 for the win while Beadle had to settle for the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Raymond ran 6.31 to qualify #3. He improved to 6.28/228 on a second-round solo when Al Bergler broke, but he lost to Bonin in the semifinals. The team did not run the IHRA Winternationals, and while the "Max" did not reach the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals, Beadle was the low qualifier. Raymond was also the low qualifier at the AHRA Springnationals with a 6.57/218.44. He beat Jim White and Tom Hovland before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinals. The team was at Union Grove for the Drag Racing Olympics race on May 29 and 30. The show was run with 22 cars running the first-round, with the four lowest ET's advancing into the semifinals. Beadle's 6.33 was good enough to advance, but he lost to McEwen in the semis. The following day (May 30), they did it again, but the "Max" failed to qualify for the semifinals this time. Surprisingly, they skipped running the NHRA Cajun Nationals in favor of the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, as the races were run on the same weekend (June 5). It was an eight-car field, and Beadle qualified on the "bump" with a 6.59/220.59. But the car came alive during eliminations, running 6.35/229.01 in the first round, to beat Graham and a 6.46/210.78 over Prock's 6.53/213 in the semifinals. He faced Collins in the finals, and Raymond's 6.53/223.52 got the victory over John's tire-smoking 7.13/181. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 and lost to Prudhomme in the first round. Beadle won the second PDA race held at Fremont on June 23. There he stopped John Lombardo in the final. He then won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. He qualified #2 with a 6.31 and a final round 6.43/191 beat Gordon Mineo's off-pace 7.95/103. The team skipped the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown as the weekend before the team used up three aluminum engines. The team got things sorted out, and they ended the month of July by winning Portland's 32-car show on the 31st. Beadle had set Low ET, and in the final, his 6.35 beat Mike Miller's 6.39. Beadle could not get the "Max" to run a number at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. He smoked the tires and shut off in both his races losing to Bonin and Hank Johnson. A week later (August 19), the car ran right as Beadle won the Division 6 final at Portland. He beat Rich Rogers, driving the "Green Elephant" in the opening round with a 6.43/211.76. A semifinal 6.39/209.30 beat Jim Dunn, and he faced the Low ET car of Bonin in the final. Beadle got out first, and his 6.34/227.84 hung on to win over Bonin's slightly quicker 6.33/225. He then went to Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Beadle qualified #3 in the eight-car field and then proceeded to run 6.45/212.26 over Bob Pickett and a motor-saving 7.29/141.06 solo when Bonin failed to hear the call for the semifinals. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Beadle's 6.53/214.73 finished runner-up to Hoover's 6.40/215. After the team's northern swing, they returned to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where a 6.22/226.13 qualified a disappointing #14. A first-round 6.20/228 by Tom McEwen sent the 6.45/200.44 of Beadle packing for home. |

Notes: Indy 5.985 was the second entry into the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club (Eddie Pauling’s 5.973 had been disallowed as it was run at a match race). The team had a fuel tank issue that vexed them all season. The car was hurting itself on every pass. After the team found and fixed the faulty fuel tank, they went on a tear, winning 32-car match races In Seattle and Boise, and running the five at Indy. Finished the year with a win at the World Finals. | The Arrow debuted at the NHRA Winternationals, but the team failed to qualify. They also failed to make the show at the Gatornationals. Raymond qualified #1 at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals with a 6.74, but in round one, Beadle and Gene Snow both lost traction and Gene's 7.36/176 came out on top over Raymond's 7.58/143.31. On June 4, for the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis, Beadle qualified second with a 6.46/207.86. He set Low ET with a 6.39/211.77 pass over Jim White in the first round, but a 6.55 by John Collins in the semis beat the Max's 6.62. The following week (June 11), the team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where once again they failed to qualify. At Alamo, San Antonio, on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals, a 6.60/204 qualified the team sixth in the eight-car field. Tom McEwen's 6.36/219 beat Raymond's 6.73 in the first round. The "Max's" next stop was at Byron's Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Beadle had trouble in the first round, against McEwen and he shut off to a 9.14/106.38 loss. In round two, Beadle’s 6.37/224.43 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.55/184. It was around this time that Raymond put an order in to Keith Black for four aluminum KB engines. The "Blue Max" had been running Milodon engines and would continue to do so while awaiting the delivery. The NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown didn't go so well as a 6.35/230.17 best was only the first alternate for the field. Beadle took a win on August 20 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He qualified second with a 6.37/223.88 and set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.28/220.90 over Gordie Bonin's 6.60/222. In the semifinal, a 6.35/221.66 beat Snow's 6.40/230. In the final, a 6.29/229.59 beat Tom Hoover's 6.36/221. Another win came at the Nightfire 500 at Firebird Raceway. It was another show that had two rounds of racing with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Beadle beat John Collins in the first round, and he ran a solo 6.58 that guaranteed him a spot in the final. He faced John Lombardo who had gained a final round spot with a 6.45. After five years of trying, Beadle won with a 6.60/206.82 when Lombardo had troubles and shut off to an 8.51. Shortly after that, he stopped off at Seattle and won by beating Ron Colson with a holeshot 6.21 over the "Hawaiian." Then came Indy where their 5.98 qualified #1. Beadle lasted until round two where McEwen's 6.18 put the Max on the trailer. At the NHRA World Finals, they qualified fourth with a 6.13/234.98 and then ran a 6.20/232.55 in the first round, over Henry Harrison's 6.81/227. In the second round, a 6.15/233.76 beat Pat Foster's 6.23/239.36 in the Super Shops Arrow. A semifinal 6.27/228.42 beat a tire-smoking Denny Savage. In the final, Beadle's 6.18/234.98 beat McEwen's off pace 7.18. |

Beadle then ran 6.18, 6.17, and 6.27 to reach the final to run Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, Raymond smoked the tires and lost to Hoover's 6.29. The "Blue Max" qualified well at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where a 6.18 qualified #2. Beadle's best run in eliminations was a first-round 6.21, but in round two, a 6.69/226 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in a twin tire smoker. The "Max" broke in the semifinals, giving Gordie Bonin a free ride into the finals. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 6.05/240.00 (Low ET & Top Speed) qualified #1. But in round one, Beadle smoked the tires to a 7.01 loss against Dale Pulde's 6.32. Things went their way at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There Beadle qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.13. A first-round 6.17 advanced when Frank Oglesby broke, and in the semifinals, a 6.16/233.16 beat Shirl Greer. In the finals, he unloaded a 6.09/238.09 (Low ET & Top Speed) for the win over Paul Smith's runner-up 6.37/190. The NHRA Cajun Nationals featured an eight-car field as well. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.30/234.37. He beat Hoover's 6.44/223 in the first round, with a 6.37/229.00, but in the semifinals, a bad coil wire kept the "Max" from firing, and John Force got a free ride into the final. Raymond made it into the finals at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.13/238.09. In the opening round, another 6.13 at 231.95 beat Dick Rosberg's 6.35/212. In round two, his 6.61/223.88 beat a tire-smoking Jim Adolph. The semifinals saw Raymond make an easy pass when Colson broke on the line. He faced Burgin in the final, but his 6.69/207.37 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 6.49/239. The team then went to Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Both he and Burgin broke in the first round, with Beadle coasting through first for the win. Unfortunately, the "Blue Max" could not run in the semifinals and was replaced by Tom Prock. From there, the team went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Once again, Beadle qualified #2, with a 6.18/234.98. A first-round 6.37 beat Pete Williams' 6.61 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," but a semifinal 6.87 lost to Pulde's 6.49. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late June, Ray qualified #7 in the eight-car field and then ran a great 6.31 in the first round over Simon Menzies. He made it into the final, where he faced Billy Meyer. The "Blue Max" slowed to an off-pace 6.86 to take the runner-up spot to Meyer's 6.51. Beadle took a win at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown on July 15. He qualified #4 in the show with a 6.18/230.76. He beat Meyer in the first round with a 6.17, and a second-round 6.09/233.16 beat Pulde's 6.11/236. In the semifinals, Raymond's 6.18/235 beat Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car. In the final, he ran Force's Corvette. Beadle's 6.37/232.55 took his third NHRA National event victory over John's 6.46/212. The team did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals. |

Notes: Beadle debuted his new Omni-bodied car on August 3 at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He had problems getting the car to hook up and he finally ran 6.56 to get the final qualifying spot in the eight-car show. He improved, only slightly, to a 6.50 in the first round, but it was enough to beat John Pott who smoked the tires to a 7.93. In the semifinals, he fell of to a 6.79 that lost to eventual winner Paul Smith's 6.42 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." It was not a great start with the new ride. On August 17, the "Blue Max" team was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. Raymond advanced past the first-round with a 6.26/228.42 when Joe Godwin's Lincoln broke. In the semifinals, he improved to a 6.20/235.60, but lost to Billy Meyer's 6.14/204. The car performed better at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals where he qualified #1 with a 5.963/240.00. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Roy Harris' 6.28/236. A week later they were at Jackson County Sports Park for another NHRA Divisional race. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.31/226.13 behind Ed McCulloch's 6.14/226. These two worked their way into the final. Beadle started by running 6.22/230.76 over Nick Harmon and in the semifinals, set Low ET with a 6.09 while beating Dale Armstrong. In the final, he got Top Speed to go along with his Low ET when he ran 6.15/236.22 for the victory over Ed's 6.24/229. Fremont held a four-car show on a Wednesday night in September. They all made two runs with the two Low ET cars running in the final. Beadle gained his spot in the final with runs of 6.03 and 5.99 (Low ET). He was to meet Tom Ridings in the final who had run 6.05 and 6.09. Beadle also set Top Speed at 243.90, but the last race was never run due to a curfew at the track. The "Max" was strong at Seattle on September 21 for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.13/241.93 qualified #4 and in the first round, he beat Hank Johnson with a 6.19. In the second round, his 6.28/231.95 advanced when Tom McEwen broke just off the line. He picked up to a 6.01/243.90 (Top Speed) in the semifinals over Meyer which won him his second NHRA Funny Car Championship. In the final, he beat Dale Armstrong with a 6.04/243.24. Notes: In January '80, ND reported that at the Fremont Opener, Raymond Beadle ran 5.92/244. Beadle ran at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. The car turned out to be a handful there as he lost to John Force in the opening round, where the car went into a wheelstand, and he had to shut down. He again was forced to shut down in his second race when he got out of shape against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." At Pomona, the team waived its points for the NHRA Winternationals. Beadle qualified #3 with a 6.06/243.90. He went into a wheelstand in the first round and shut off, giving Colson the win. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9, and the "Blue Max" ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.24/233.76 to win over Billy Meyer's close 6.27/230. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.13 and, in the first round, beat Tom McEwen with a 5.99/238.09. In the second round, a 6.06/227.27 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/233. A piston-burning 6.11/207.85 beat Tom Ridings' 6.46/180 in Joe Pisano's car in the semifinals. This put him into the final against Don Prudhomme, who had just run 5.93 in the other semifinal race. Beadle tried hard in the final, but his 6.17/231.95 was good for the runner-up spot to the "Snake's" 5.98/238. He went to Darlington the following week (March 23) and cleaned up. The only thing he didn't get was the pole. He qualified #2 with a 6.42 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28 beat a tire-smoking Burgin, and a 6.29 beat John Force in the semifinals. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. Raymond capped off the weekend by running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.06/237.46 to win the event. He then set Low ET and Top Speed while winning the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley on March 30. The win put the "Blue Max" into the lead in NHRA points. Things did not go well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where the team failed to qualify. A best of 6.23/238.09 failed to better the 6.18 "bump." Raymond toured England this year, too. He came out with a new Omni to run the second half of the season. |
