Notes: Messner was at Thunder Valley Dragway for its Memorial Day Pro Stock race at the end of May. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.10/163.33 qualified #6. Notes: Doug and teammate Bob Tangen radically expanded their NHRA national event participation in 1989. Doug had been running two events per year for several seasons. They kicked off the season at Atlanta, attempting to qualify with at least 47 cars in attendance. They were the 29th alternate at a career-best 7.632/180.61. Up next was Memphis and the Mid-South Nationals. Doug ran his best ever (and best of the season) 7.508/183.15 but ended up as the 14th alternate. At Sonoma, Doug finished 12 spots outside the field with a best of 7.591/178.78. At Seattle, Doug ran 7.560/179.74 while attempting to qualify for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. His time was good for the eighth alternate. Doug attempted to qualify at the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd, but his best of 7.651/180.65 left him the thirteenth alternate. A similar finish occurred at the Heartland Nationals, with Doug's 7.596/180.94 claiming the 15th alternate position. At the Chief Auto Parts Nationals at Ennis, Doug's 7.624/179.49 was the 19th alternate. He ran 7.679/178.78 in Phoenix at the Fallnationals, claiming the 16th alternate slot. Finally, his 7.611/182.26 was the 15th alternate at the NHRA World Finals. NHRA pro stock shows of the late 80s were brutal!
