Notes: The '81 season had an interesting start for the "Blue Max" team. They showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Beadle ran a track record 5.97 at 245.90 (Top Speed) to qualify first. He beat Dennis Geisler with a 6.01/238, and in round two, Mike Dunn with another new track record 5.93 at 245.90. In the semifinals, he again went 5.93 at 245.23 to beat Don Prudhomme. But the win came at a price as the engine blew and tore the roof of the Horizon body. The team didn't have a spare body, so Kenny Bernstein offered his spare. The roof of Bernstein's car was grafted onto the "Max's" topless body for the final. After all that work, he came up to the line in the final to face Billy Meyer, who had been having his own troubles (used up four engines), but the two both had problems, and Meyer's 6.52/205 got the victory over Beadle's 6.66/236.22. The next stop was at Fremont for the East/West meet, and while Beadle didn't win, he did set Low ET at 6.04. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified unusually further back in the field with a 6.05/230.76 that was good for the #10 spot in the show. He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.20/234.37, but an off-pace 6.31/230.76 in round two lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.27/237. The next event they attended was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Raymond made it to the final before losing to Bernstein. Green Valley Raceway was their next stop for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.45/227.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, and he picked up to 6.32/233.76 in the first round to beat Chris Berg. A 6.25/228.42 beat Bernstein in the semifinals, and he went into the finals to meet with Hoover. Beadle got another runner-up finish as his 6.45/231.36 lost to Hoover's 6.32/231. Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 26, featuring eight-car fields in the nitro classes. Raymond qualified #1 with a track record 5.96 at 230.17. Unfortunately, a blown motor slowed him to a 6.23 in the first round, which lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.11. Things went much more their way at Rockingham; the "Max" ran a track record 5.99 at 231.95 in qualifying #1. This was IHRA's first five-second time in the Funny Car division. A 6.00/233.70 beat Shirl Greer in the first round and backed up the 5.99 as a new IHRA record. In round two, Raymond's 6.22 beat Al Segrini, setting up a Meyer vs. Beadle final. The "Max" got the win, running 6.23/229.59 over Billy's troubled 7.46. These two would meet again in the final at the next IHRA race, the Springnationals at Bristol. There Beadle qualified #1 with a track record 5.98 at 240.64. He beat a tire-smoking Bernstein in the first round with a 6.22, while a solo run of 6.18 advanced him into the final when Segrini's car broke on the line. The two reversed their finishes of the last race, with Meyer winning with a 6.21/228 over Raymond's 6.26/236.84. The FCs boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, holding out for more money. May ended with the team running at the IHRA World Nationals, but they failed to reach the finals. In June, the "Blue Max" made it into another final round at the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.05 at 234.37. Bob Pickett got out of shape against him in the first round, and his 6.20/219 advanced. In round two, Beadle went up against Texas neighbor Bernstein. The "Max's" 6.15/235 beat the "Budweiser King's" 6.21/233. Another 6.15/227 in the semifinals took out Hoover's 6.36/202. This put him into the final against 24-year-old Craig Epperly in Don Tait's car. This had the makings of an upset, and it was. Both recorded 6.21 (Beadle at 236.84), but Epperly scored his first NHRA National event victory while Beadle had to settle for runner-up. On July 4, the team was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.23/229.59 behind Bernstein's 6.17. These two worked their way to the final. Beadle survived a close first-round race with Henry Harrison, where his 6.32/230.17 just beat Henry's 6.33/209. In the semifinals, he improved to 6.21/229.59 in stopping Meyer's Citation at 6.49/219. This put the two Texas cars in the final together. But again, the "Blue Max" team had to settle for the runner-up spot as Beadle's 6.32/202.24 lost to Kenny's 6.21/234. The following week (July 12), things went their way as Beadle beat Meyer to win the IHRA Northern Nationals. Then it was off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where both he and Bernstein qualified with 5.86s. Kenny got the pole while Raymond qualified #2, but his speed of 245.23 was tops for the meet. A first-round 6.11/219.51 beat John Collins, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Mike Dunn. The team then went to Brainerd for an eight-car show. In the first round, Beadle's 6.46/222.77 beat Carl Swenson's 6.56/221. He then set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.22/226.70 over Dunn's tire-smoker in the "Hawaiian." He faced Tom Hoover in the final; this time, the "Blue Max" went up in tire smoke and lost. | Craig won Indy and had two runner-up finishes to take his second straight championship. Set mph record. Notes: Beadle was running with Ford sponsorship for 1982, which included a new EXP body on his car. He started the season by qualifying third at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.99/228.42. He ran as well as a 5.97/244.56 in his semifinal win over Frank Hawley's quicker 5.96/239. In the final, he met Al Segrini where his 6.32/226.13 fell to Al's 6.26/238.09. A 5.91/243.90 (Top Speed) qualified #1 at the Gatornationals, but in the first round, he met Segrini again and this time Beadle got out of shape and hit the guardrail. The car ended up flipping upside down and slid into the opposite guardrail before coming to a halt. He was OK, but the EXP body was totaled. At the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, the team showed up with last year's Omni body and qualified #1 with a 6.02 (Low ET), but he lost in the first round. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 25 where a 5.98/235.60 qualified third. A first-round 5.88/238 beat Gary Burgin and a 5.93/240 beat Paul Smith in the semifinals. In the final, he reset the NHRA record to a 5.87 with a speed of 243.24 to win the race over Hawley. On May 2 he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am where a track record 5.86 led qualifying. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to John Pott. He followed that race up with a win at the NHRA Cajun Nationals beating Don Prudhomme in the final with a 6.08/239.36 over Don's 6.13/247.25. He qualified second with a 6.00. Another win came at the IHRA Springnationals where he set Low ET (6.00) and beat Billy Meyer in the final. He then ran at the NHRA Springnationals on June 13 where a 5.98/242.58 qualified third, but in the first round, he smoked all eight pistons and lost to Segrini. A week later at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Beadle set a 5.88 track record in qualifying and ran another 5.88 in his first-round win over John Pott. In the semifinals, Dale Pulde's 6.29 beat Beadle's 6.31. Raymond won the US Funny Car Championships at Brainerd on June 27. He beat Doc Halladay and Glenn Mikres before stopping Burgin in the final. He qualified eighth with a 6.48/226.70 in the eight-car field at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first-round 6.51/222 beat Tom Anderson's 6.58 and a 6.25/226.69 beat Craig Epperly's quicker 6.19/230.17 in the semifinal. In the final he met Meyer who had set Low ET and Top Speed (6.12/240), but he shut down to a 6.85/149.75 and had to settle for runner-up. A 6.00 qualified second at the IHRA Summernationals, but he lost to Pott in the first round. Another first-round loss followed at the NHRA Grandnationals on July 4 where he qualified eighth again with a 6.15/242.24 in the eight-car show, but he had a rear end break on his burnout for his race against Prudhomme. A 5.93/249.30 qualified second at the NHRA Summernationals, but he lost to Prudhomme in round two. He qualified second again with a 5.94/236.22 at the PHR Championships in August at Martin, Michigan, and ran a first-round 5.97 over Tim Grose. A semifinal 6.07 beat Ken Veney's quicker 6.03. In the final, a 6.02/248.61 (Top Speed) lost to Hawley's 6.01/236.22. Another win came at the IHRA Northern Nationals where he beat Tim Grose in the final. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, he qualified seventh with a 6.03/233.76. A first-round 5.97/246.57 by Gary Burgin beat Ray's 6.05/243.90. At Indy, for the US Nationals, the Max qualified a disappointing twelfth with a 5.98/224.99. And in the opening round, he lost to Ken Veney. He was runner-up to the "Snake" at the 13th annual Governor's Cup Championships at Sacramento. His final round 6.12 lost to Prudhomme's 5.99. A 6.19 failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. He rebounded with a 5.98 to qualify seventh at the NHRA World Finals, but after beating Burgin in round one, he lost to Hawley in the next round. Raymond competed at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet in Nov, but he failed in his attempt to reach the final. He ended the season at a four-car match at Moroso Motorsports Park during the running of the Citrus Nationals. Beadle set Low ET with a 6.27. — Ron Howard |

Notes: Raymond Beadle was having a tough time at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It took him three passes to qualify, and his 6.321/242.58 got him the #13 spot. In the first round, he smoked the tires to an 8.07 and lost to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.91/244.56. He improved to a 5.89/246.57 over Tom McEwen in the first round. In round two, his 6.19/213.77 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.93/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/215.82. Beadle beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to gain a final round berth against Kenny Bernstein. In the final, his 6.39/215.97 finished runner-up to Bernstein's 6.21/227. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and, unfortunately, Raymond failed to qualify for the show. He was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17. It was another eight-car field, and once again, he failed to qualify with a 6.31 best. Things went better a week later (April 24) at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Beadle qualified #2 with a 5.99 behind Dale Pulde's 5.98 (Low ET). The two worked their way into the final, where Pulde's 6.11 got the victory over the "Blue Max's" 6.20. Raymond got another runner-up finish at the next IHRA event, the World Nationals at Norwalk, where Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped him in the final. Beadle also failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 6.13/241.93 was far short of the 6.08 it took to make the eight-car field. Oswald got him again at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Beadle qualified #3, and a solo 6.65/187.89 made it past a broken Al Segrini in round one, but he lost to Oswald in the semifinals. Beadle won his 11th NHRA National event when he won the Springnationals at Columbus. He had set Low ET and a track record 5.88 at 238.64 in qualifying #1 for the field. He then ran 5.97/235.60 over Ken Veney and 6.28/180.36 over a broken Segrini. His opponent, Gary Burgin, smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Raymond's 6.10/228.42 advanced. Once again, he faced Oswald for the title, and his 6.95/238.09 got him the victory over Mark's 6.27/235. He then won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, beating Bernstein in the final. He set Top Speed with his 251.39 pass. The following week (July 17) found the "Blue Max" team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Beadle qualified #6 with a 5.95/233.76. A quick-leaving 6.14/236.84 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.10/238 in the opening round, but in round two, the car ruptured an oil pan while staging against Don Prudhomme. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. It was an eight-car show, and Beadle's 6.08/238.09 qualified #4. Both he and Force ran 6.22 (Raymond at 239.38) in their first-round race, but Force got to the other end first. Beadle did not race at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, as he chose to race at Spokane instead for the AHRA World Finals that was run the same weekend. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 behind Force. The two of them would make their way into the final. An easy 6.26/238.72 in the opening round defeated a tire-smoking Gary Densham, and in the semifinal, Raymond's 5.92/241.93 beat Tom McEwen, who also smoked the tires. It looked like Force would that an easy win in the final as he had run 5.79 twice during eliminations. But Beadle picked up to a 5.78/247.93 to win the race over Force's 5.91/220. It had to be upsetting for the "Blue Max" team to be watching the Big Bud Shootout at Indy on September 4 and not being a part of the show. The exclusive eight-car show was held during qualifying and only the top eight qualifiers from the past year ran. But the next day, Beadle's team showed them what they could do. A 5.83/251.39 qualified #3, and Beadle set Low ET in the opening round with his 5.804 at a booming 254.95 that beat Paul Gordon. In round two, his 5.91/245.23 beat Hawley's 6.02/235. But his quicker 5.87/247.93 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.90/254 in the semifinal. The next weekend (September 11), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Beadle ran 5.89/250 to qualify low for the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinal before Oswald's 5.83/253 put his 5.84/252 on the trailer in a close race. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Fallnationals. Beadle ran well again, running 5.84/252.10 to qualify #2 behind Oswald's 5.74/253. This was a critical race for the "Max." Going into this race, Beadle led the IHRA Funny Car points chase by 54 points over Oswald. They both survived their first-round races, but Beadle smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to Dale Pulde. Oswald went on to win the race and the IHRA Funny Car points Championship. Even with the loss, the "Blue Max" was running some numbers; 5.7's were becoming more and more frequent as well as 250 mph runs. Case in point, at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 2, Beadle's 5.779/251.39 claimed the pole for the eight-car field. He got lucky in the opening round when his crossed-up 6.31/240.64 advanced over Bernstein's troubled 13.13. In the semifinal, he was back on pace with a 5.767/249.30 that defeated Hawley's 5.95/220. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Billy's 5.757/245 get the victory over Raymond's 5.78/246.57. Raymond became the 7th member of the Crane Cams 250 mph Club for Funny Car with a 251.39 pass on July 10, 1983, at IHRA Milan, Michigan. |

Notes: Beadle started the '84 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he smacked the guardrail while beating Gary Southern in the first round with a 6.21. He could not make the second round due to damage to the car. Things improved at the Gatornationals, where he qualified for #8 with a 5.88/253.52. A first-round 6.04/202.70 beat Jim White's 6.12/233, and in round two, he shut down to a winning 8.34/109.35 when Tom McEwen broke. In the semifinals, he faced Kenny Bernstein and unfortunately smoked the tires, losing to Kenny's 5.79/256. He qualified #8 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.01 but lost early. In April, the team was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Raymond ran 5.92 to qualify #11. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. On May 6, Raymond qualified #3 at Rockingham with a career-best (to this point) 5.77/258.52 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lasted until round two before his tire-smoking, 7.24/128 lost to Jim Head's 6.09/250. He also smoked the tires in a first-round loss to Al Segrini at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bristol was the next stop for the team for the IHRA Springnationals. Beadle's 5.89/250 qualified #6, and his 5.95/249.30 advanced over a fouling Paul Smith in the "Custom Body" car in the first round. He and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car had a great race in round two that saw Oswald's 5.82/254 get the better of the "Max's" 5.89/252.10. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships shortly after. A 5.96 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field, and Beadle lasted until round two before his off-pace 6.50 lost to Smith's 5.99. Beadle had won the '83 NHRA Springnationals and hoped to repeat in '84. He started by qualifying #8 at Columbus with a 5.94/248.61. An opening round 5.97/238.09 beat Head's 6.07/243, and in round two, a 5.93/247.25 took out Sherm Gunn's 6.28/191. But his repeat chances were over in the semifinal when Beadle's 5.96/241.93 lost to eventual winner Oswald's 5.89/242. Things didn't go so well in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.93/251.39 but lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the opening round. The following week (July 8) saw more of the same. They were in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Raymond's 5.79/259.36 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field. But in round one, a sheared fuel pump ended their chances of advancing. But after a couple of weeks of lows came the highs. Beadle won for the first time in thirteen months at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A lot of racer's luck helped out in this win, but it was still a win. He had only qualified #11 with a 5.87/247.93. Don Prudhomme had a blower explode in the opening round of eliminations, and Beadle advanced with a 6.58. Tim Grose smoked the tires in the second round, and a 5.92/249.30 advanced the "Max." He was to face Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, but the "Budweiser King" broke a reverser after its burnout, and Beadle singled into the final with a 5.93/250.00. He went up against Meyer in the final, and his 5.95/247.93 took the victory over Billy's 5.97/248. Then came a stop at Dragway 42 for the ADRA's first race, the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field. Beadle qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal before his blower exploded on a 6.53 pass that lost to eventual winner Jim White. His best times there were 5.92/244. Raymond sure didn't have to wait long before scoring his next NHRA victory, as it came at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.92/233.76 and then set a 5.90 track record during eliminations. He beat Prudhomme in the semifinal and then went up against Frank Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for the title. Hawley fouled, and Beadle ran 5.93/248.61 (speed was a track record) for the victory. At the IHRA Summernationals, held at Edgewater, he qualified #3, then during eliminations, he set Low ET at 5.78 but lost to Oswald in the semifinal. After running so well, the team had to be disappointed at Brainerd. Beadle "only" qualified #12 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, and he lost to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Raymond's best NHRA times of 5.750 at Indy and 257.14 at Atlanta. We formerly listed 5.735 but are removing that until we get confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Beadle qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.58/259.51. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 12.44 while his opponent, Graeme Cowin advanced with a 5.74/261. | March 6/8, Raymond would compete at the Coca Cola Funny Car Classic at Ennis where he would qualify #1 with a 5.514/254.0. In round 1 on a Single he ran 5.510/263.92. In the Semis Beadle got another single as Henry Phillips had to put a replacement body on the chassis after disintegrating the original body, however Henry's team felt the body was "inadequate to deal with potential 5.60/240 runs." & thus, didn't run against Beadle & Beadle ran 5.86/256.84 in the solo. He would race Steve Hodkinson in the final where Beadle would win with a 5.63/256.19. | On March 15 he was at Atlanta or a six-car show. He qualified #5 with a 6.22/240.00 and another 6.22 in the first round, loss to Jim Head's 5.94. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.64/256.62 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he lost when he smoked the tires against Head in the first round. Beadle lent the "Blue Max" to Tom McEwen to drive at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. McEwen did pretty well with it finishing runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Back at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, it was a light field, and Raymond's 6.17/242.71 qualified #14 for the show. He lost to Texas neighbor, Billy Meyer's 5.71/254 in the first round, with a 6.21/215.31. Beadle qualified #15 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with an 8.95/170.13 as only sixteen-cars showed. He ran 8.74/97.79 to advance past the first-round when Mike Dunn failed to show. In the second round, Beadle smoked the tires to a 6.10/250, but it was still enough to get past Henry Phillips. He smoked the tires again in the semifinals, but this time he lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.57/261. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, Beadle ran 5.91/241.15 to qualify #11, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The "Blue Max" team did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were there at Englishtown for the Summernationals. Raymond qualified #13 with a 5.81/248.61. Another 5.81 at 248.68 in round one, lost to John Force's quick-leaving 5.85/252. |
