Notes: Sam brought out his clean Duster at the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified sixth (times unknown) but lost to Leroy Goldstein in round one, 6.88/208.33 to 7.23/173.69. Miller was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 15. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.99/213.27. He advanced (no time) when Casey Powell broke in round one, and a semifinal 7.03/215.82 beat Larry Fullerton's 7.29/187.11 and moved him into the finals against Phil Castronovo. It was a close race, and Phil had set Low ET in the semifinals with his track record 6.91/202.24. A car had blown its engine in the lane that Phil had chosen for the final. The track crew cleaned the track, but Castronovo had his car get out of shape in some leftover residue and publicly criticized NHRA for its cleanup. Nevertheless, Miller ran 7.01/216.86 for the victory while Phil recovered to 7.45 for the runner-up spot. A week later (August 22), these two were in another final round together. This time, it came at the Dutch Classic held at Maple Grove. In the opening round, Sam beat Jim Maybeck with a 6.95/200.44, and a semifinal 7.35/173.41 advanced when Lew Arrington's "Brutus" broke a rear end. Castronovo got some "revenge" for the previous week when he ran 6.94/198 for the win when Miller had a rear-end break on the line. Miller qualified #10 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.811/215, but lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.67/219.51 to 7.24/210. The weekend of September 19 did not go so well for Sam. He was in New England for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.92/200 beat Tom Sneden's 7.02/201. In round two, he faced Arrington, and Miller's engine let go, and the explosion ripped the body off the chassis. He was OK.

Notes: Great-looking red, white, and blue car. - Danny White | Featured on the cover of the 2/72 Drag Times after its debut at Englishtown, NJ. - RT | Sam Miller entered the Funny Car wars in '71 by buying Don Prudhomme's old 'Cuda from '70. He graduated to a Duster, scoring a win at the NHRA Grandnationals in '71. Unfortunately, a few weeks after his win, the car suffered a blower failure at Epping, New Hampshire, which blew the body off. For the '72 season, Sam had John Buttera build him this 114" Mustang-bodied car. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd., and S&W handled the tinwork. The engine was a Fred Forkner-built 426 Hemi. It used a stock crank that was balanced and clearanced. M/T rods were used as well as 6.5:1 Forgedtrue pistons. Isky was the choice for the cam. Keith Black prepared the GMC 6/71, and it sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar also handled the blower drive. Going against the grain, Sam used a Crower injection unit to feed the engine the 90% nitro. A Lenco two-speed transmitted power back to a 5.14 Ford rear end. Best times reported by September '72 Rodder and Super Stock magazine were 6.63/219. Sam began his NHRA national event season at Pomona, but was a DNQ in the 15th alternate slot (times unavailable). He ran 6.850/212.39 to qualify #10 at Gainesville. He lost to Jake Johnston in round one, 6.69/220.04 to 6.88/205.47. Sam qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.887/209.77, and got revenge on Johnston in round one, 7.33/186.33 to 9.24/112.50. He repeated his 7.33 but at 175.09 to fall to Larry Fullerton's 6.56/225.00 in round two. Sam was back at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.860 qualified #8 by virtue of being the defending champion! Jake Johnston's 6.77 was quicker, but he had to settle for first alternate! An off-pace 7.66/151.51 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher's 6.75/206.89. Sam was the fifth alternate at Indy at 6.80/182.18. That was Sam's last NHRA national event this year. He ran a confirmed 6.68 at Epping 72.

Notes: Sam Miller was on board as the car burned to the ground. - per the 70’s Funny Cars website with info provided by Don Roberts (https://www.70sfunnycars.com/FunnyCars6.html), Miller drove Gordon’s Charger in 1974, and that was the car that burned, not the Cuda. Did Miller drive the Cuda? Also, the Cuda was originally called the “King Cuda,” then “Bostonian,” and the supercharger was replaced with injectors when the name was changed. Later Charger was supercharged. JM

Notes: In June, Sam was driving Frank Federici's "Shark" at New England for its Spring Funny Car Championships. In the first round, he bounced it off the guardrail in his race against Pat Foster. Pat was having his own problems. Although he drove the Barry Setzer Vega to the win with a 7.78/135, he had blown the engine and was done for the day. The "break rule" was in effect, and Sam got back into the show for round two. There, his 7.45/145 beat a tire-smoking Al Segrini at 7.57/218. His run ended in the semifinal, where he lost to Bobby Rowe, driving one of Don Schumacher's Cudas.

Notes: Sam was driving Fred Forkner's car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Thirty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Miller qualified #5. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.38/223.77 lost to the meet's eventual winner Dale Funk's 6.25/216. The following weekend (June 22), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 6.48/190.67 defeated Roger Toth's quicker, but later 6.46/215 in the "Hemi-Hunter." In the semifinal, Hank Endres' 6.59/209 fell to Miller's 6.43/217.38. Sam broke, and Dale Thierer soloed for the victory in the final.
