Notes: As cars in the old modified roadster class go, this went a step way beyond--way, way beyond. Mitchell and Karg were friends who lived in a St. Louis suburb. They built a mid-engined "driverless T" roadster that simply amazed everyone who saw it at the U.S. Nationals in Oklahoma City. They married a mutt of a Ford body with a '23 shell on the back with a '32 hood and grill section on the front. They sat this concoction on 1932 rails. They placed a blown '51 Chrysler Hemi in the driver's compartment and relocated the driver's seat inside the cowl. When tucked tightly and super-low inside the front cowl, driver Mitchell could only be seen through small, clear plastic side windows. He had visibility through a clear-plastic front window in the '32 grille shell opening. In a sense, once Mitchell was strapped into the car, he was literally prone as if he were lying in a coffin, peering out in front of the car between his feet. The whole effect for spectators watching this car race down the track was as if it was driving minus a driver, i.e., a "driverless T." Mind-blowing to say the least. They towed their bedazzling hot rod across the river to the Belleville Gear Jammers drag race on June 1 at Walston Airport, near Cahokia, Illinois. They set a new track record of 118.26 mph. At that race, Mitchell got the top speed of the meet trophy with 116 mph. He won the A/MR class with 13.6 at 95 mph. He won the A/MR class at Alton with 116 mph on July 13. On Aug. 10, the Gear Jammers put up $150 expense money to pay the winning racer for a trip to the U.S. Nationals. Mitchell won the expense-paid trip to the Nationals after his opponent, Don Sillerud, was disqualified by crossing the center line in his "Pink Lady" dragster from Iowa City. Notes: This team consisted of Dave Emerson, Joe Streje, and Jack Mitchell. The car used an early Hemi stroked to 464 and a Reath 5/8 stroker crank. Ansen provided the rods and pistons. An Engle cam operates the Donovan valves, and a Hilborn injector was used. The 155" chassis was from R&B. The total weight of the bare chassis was just 60 lbs. The car was featured in the August '67 issue of All-American Drags, and it was said to have run a best of 8.05/192. The team ran a confirmed 8.122/191.18 at Indy 1967. Notes: Jack was at San Fernando on July 11, where he ran 8.56/147.05 in qualifying. In the first round, his 8.35/189.06 advanced. He reached the final only to have the car bog off the line and lose to Gary Cassidy's 8.05/185 in Bill Martin's car. He was runner-up at San Fernando for an eight-car show on September 26. He had qualified last at 8.55/181.80. John made his way to the final, where he had problems and shut down to 8.79/128.62, losing Tom Toler's 8.10/205 in the "Addict."

Notes: On April 30, John was at Irwindale for a Top Fuel meet. He lost to low qualifier Zane Schubert's 7.75/209 in the first round, with an 8.07/192.30. On May 7, he was back at Irwindale for another show. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 7.96, but he lost to Tommy Allen in the first round. The following week (May 14), he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. John ran a 7.95 to qualify #8. He was having a hard time getting past the first-round and once again he lost early. This time he lost a blower belt on the line in the first round, against Ron Hampshire. The next day (May 15), he was at San Fernando for an eight-car show where he lost fire in the first round.
