Notes: A step up to Pro Stock for the 1977 NHRA Stock Eliminator World Champion. Purchased the Bill Orndorff car at the 85 NHRA Springnationals. Mizell had just gotten his Pro Stock driver's license at Englishtown just six days before the NHRA Grandnationals were run (June 30). He made the trip to Canada, but his 7.81/177.79 failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Shortly after this, he ran at an eight-car show at Suffolk. His 7.98 qualified #4, and he improved to a 7.93/179.41 in the opening round of eliminations to defeat Dave Saul's 8.06/168. In the semifinal, Stan's 7.95/174.75 lost to eventual winner Charlie Garrett's 7.87/173. He then returned to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his 7.78 best failed to qualify. He did not compete at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Mizell's 7.85/175.43 qualified #15. He cut a great light in the opening round that saw his 7.81/176.47 beat Don Coonce's much quicker,7.64/180. He tried the same thing on Warren Johnson in round two but fouled.

Notes: Ran 7.659/179.64 at 1986 NHRA Winters with the old paint job. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. Made it to round three at the Mile Highs, losing to Glidden. The best NHRA times were a 7.560 at Maple Grove, which beat Joe Lepone on a holeshot in round one, and 183.52 in a third alternate finish at Indy. Stan was at Baton Rouge in June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. (With new paint) Unfortunately, his 7.76/178.07 best was only good enough for the third alternate. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.72/179.06. Things went a little better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #13 with a 7.67/178.64, but in the opening round of eliminations, eventual winner Butch Leal ran 7.65/183 to beat his 7.68/179.21. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 7.62/179.71 failed to qualify. Things went a whole lot better at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals; not only did he qualify, but he also lasted until the semifinals. A 8.08/170.45 got him the #15 spot in the field. An opening round 8.32/166.14 advanced when his opponent, Dempsey Hardy, broke a fuel pump. In round two, Leal broke a transmission, and Mizell's 8.17/167 moved on. His luck ran out in the semifinal when he came up against the race's eventual winner Bob Glidden. Stan ran his best time of eliminations, an 8.12/168.66, but it finished far behind Glidden's 7.92/174.

Notes: Stan was the third alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.57/182.37. That wasn't too bad, considering that 47 cars were attempting to qualify. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he was the eighth alternate at 7.58/179.92. Near the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ended up as the ninth alternate with a 7.75/179.42. Things went much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.61/177.90 qualified #13. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Nick Nikolis' 7.70/181 with a 7.67/180.90. In round two, his 7.65/181.59 fell to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 7.52/185. Ran 7.742/182.81 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87, which was good for the sixth alternate. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he was the eighth alternate with a 7.62/181.95 best. He did not go to Denver for the Mile High Nationals, but he did go to Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals, where his 7.70/176.95 was the fourth alternate. He then made the trip to Indy for the US Nationals. It was a tough show as 52 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He did better than 23 of them, but his 7.60/186.18 was still only good enough for the thirteenth alternate. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. A best of 7.59/181.48 left him as the ninth alternate for the show. He ran well at Texas for the Chief Nationals. Stan's 7.44/184.80 qualified #12, but he lost to Jerry Eckman in the opening round. He was the second alternate at the Fallnationals with a 7.61/183.37 best, and at the World Finals at Pomona, his 7.50/183.78 was the second alternate for the show.

Notes: Mizell was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 with a 7.38/187.11. In the first round of eliminations, his 7.46/185.52 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.36/188. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he qualified #13 with a career-best (to this point) 7.374 at 186.79. But once again, he lost in the opening round. This time his 7.44/185.79 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.34/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the NHRA Supernationals. This was a tough show as it took a 7.33 to get in. Unfortunately, Stan's new career-best 7.356/186.52 was only good enough for the eighth alternate. He was also the eighth alternate at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.42/186.33 best. He did not go to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, nor did he go to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Stan attempted to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but his 7.51/182.22 best was only good enough for the eleventh alternate.

Notes: Vern debuted his new Arrow at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. The track was really slick and Motes qualified #3 with a 7.82/196.06. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.87 was good for the second alternate. He showed that he was making some top end horsepower when the accompanying speed of 207.85 was Top Speed of the meet for the alcohol burners.

Notes: Vern won the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis on June 6. He ran 6.93 and 6.81/205.02 to reach the finals, where he faced Bud Williams. Bud had run a best of 6.73 in eliminations, so he was tough, but an off-pace 7.22/152 in the final finished runner-up to Moats' 6.80/205.95.
