Notes: John started the IHRA season at Darlington for the Winternationals. A best of 7.06 didn't make the cut, but he was the first alternate. He didn't make any shows until June 21, when he qualified #11 at the IHRA Summernationals in Canada with a 7.15/189.95. Rickie Smith ran a 7.05/197 in the first round to beat John's 7.24/189.59. A 7.26/193.54 qualified #16 on July 19 at Epping for the IHRA Northeast Nitrous Nationals. He hurt his engine in qualifying and was replaced in the field by Sherrie Kamp. He skipped over the following few IHRA events until he arrived at Norwalk on August 30 for the World Nationals. Unfortunately, a best of 8.03/187.77 left him a long way (#12 alternate) from making the show. He did better on September 13 at Epping for the IHRA North American Nationals, but his 7.19 still fell a bit (#2 alternate) short. At Darlington on September 27, everyone was flying with the bump ending up at 7.08. John tried hard, but a 7.13 was only good for the sixth alternate. He skipped the season-ending IHRA Fallnats at Bristol.

Notes: John was the first alternate at Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals with a 7.11/195.10. At IHRA's second event, the 1/8 mile Bama Nationals, his best of 4.58/154.45 was good for the fourth alternate. A 7.21/191.44 failed to qualify (fifth alternate) at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and he was the first alternate with a best of 7.21/191.69 at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. The non-qualifying rut continued for John at the IHRA Summernationals at Atco. There, his best of 7.15/191.93 was the seventh alternate for the show. In late July, he showed up in New England for the IHRA Northeast Nationals, showing that he was not so easy to give up. He ended up as the fourth alternate with a 7.13/193.92 best. He skipped the IHRA Mid-America Nationals but was back on the IHRA trail at Norwalk for the World Nationals, where he finally broke through and qualified #13 with a 7.14/194.59. He ran an off-pace 7.41/183.71 that lost to Roy Hill's 7.18/193 in the first round. Even with the first-round loss, it was like a victory, as qualifying for these races was extremely tough. He was outside looking in at the next IHRA event, the North American Nationals, where he was the second alternate with a 7.08/196.72. He had been running a 731 cubic inch engine until that race, but at the IHRA President's Cup Championships at Maryland International in October, he debuted a 769 cubic inch motor. He qualified #10 with a 6.98/197.62 and, in the first round, ran a career-best (to this point) of 6.95/199.02 to beat Terry Leggett's 7.00/199. He fouled away a 7.11/197 in round two against Robert Patrick, who ran 6.99/198. At IHRA's season final, the Fallnationals at Bristol, John again qualified. He ran 7.06/195.90 for the #9 spot in the field. He improved to a 7.02/195.48 in the first round to beat Floyd Cheek's Probe at 7.05/198, but a 7.09/195.48 in round two lost to Patrick's 6.97/197.

Redlighted in round two to eventual winner Floyd Cheek. | John was at Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.87/201.82, but in the first round, he fouled, running 6.98/200.02, while opponent Doug Kirk advanced with a 6.88/201. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Nationals. There he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.86/203.66. He faced low qualifier Angelo Alesci in the first round. Angelo had brake issues, so Montecalvo advanced with a 9.39/131.59. In the second round, he had problems and shut down to 12.44 in his race with Tim Nabors.

Notes: 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified No. 1 with Low ET of Meet. 6.73/204.88, but lost in round one, to Doug Kirk (photo), 6.84/203 to 6.87/199. Ford and GM products fought it out hard on the IHRA circuit in '98. Although Montecalvo didn't win any of the IHRA major races, he consistently qualified and was among the strongest GM cars. At the IHRA Winternationals, he had the strongest GM car, qualifying # 7 behind five Fords and one lone Mopar with a 6.76/204.54. He beat the similar Monte Carlo of Angelo Alesci in the opening round with a 6.87/200.66. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Tom Lee's 6.81/204 in round two. IHRA's second race of the year was the Southern Nationals held at Darlington early in May. John ran 6.74/204.88 to qualify #5. A 6.79/205.47 beat Dwayne Rice's close 6.80/204 in round one, but in round two, his 6.78/205.60 lost to Tony Gillig's 6.77/204. Cordova hosted the IHRA Summernationals in July, and John qualified #14 at 6.92/197.39. He improved to 6.89/199.55 in round one, to beat Alesci's 6.90/200. An early shut-off 7.29/150.80 lost to eventual winner Ron Miller's 6.90/200. The next race on the schedule was the Empire Nationals. Montecalvo set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.78 at 202.70. Floyd Cheek had problems against him in the opening round, and John's 6.89/200.59 advanced. But in round two, he fouled away a 6.93/200.80 against Tim Nabors, who saw the light go red and eased to 10.27 for the win. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #1 with a 6.78/203.65. He opened eliminations with a 6.79/203.77 that beat Rocky Waterford, and in the semifinals, his 6.77/204.05 took out Rice. He faced Gillig in the final, who also ran 6.77 in his semifinal race. The two had a great final that saw Tony's 6.78/202 nip John's 6.78/203.52 for the win. He also qualified #1 at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where his 6.73 (at 204.45) held for Low ET. But he was gone in the first round, when Doug Kirk (driving the only Mopar in the field) ran 6.84/203 to defeat his 6.87/199.91. At the end of August, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. His 6.77/203.06 qualified #4. Another 6.77 at 204.73 beat Cheek, whose Probe broke and slowed to 8.24. In round two, John's 6.84/202.65 fell to Alesci's 6.81/203. The next stop was at Epping for the IHRA North American Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 6.75/204.76, and in the opening round, his 6.78/202.00 lost to Daniel Seamon's 6.72/206. John ran 6.70/204.98 to qualify #5 at the IHRA President's Cup Championships held at the end of September. In round one, he fell off to a 6.82/203.94, but it was still good enough to beat Jerry Yeoman's troubled 15.85. He got lucky in round two when Gillig also shut down with issues, and John's 6.84/202.27 advanced. He faced Lee in the semifinal, and John pushed the tree too hard and fouled. He shut down to 7.16/157.74 while Tom ran 6.80/204 to win. IHRA's final race of the year was its World Finals held at Shreveport in Oct. Montecalvo qualified #7 there with a 6.77/204.39. His season ended early as Larry O'Brien's 6.73/205 in the opening round beat his 6.77/203.77.

Notes: IHRA held eleven races in 1999. Ten of them were won by drivers racing Ford Probes. Montecalvo was the strongest GM campaigner, and he was able to give the Ford drivers a run for their money. The season started at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. The race was postponed until May after qualifying due to rain. Four Monte Carlos had qualified, and he was the second quickest of the breed at 6.66/207.91. That was good enough for #5 overall. The next race was the IHRA Amalie Nationals held at Bradenton at the end of March. He was not running as well as he usually did as his 6.78/204.87 "only" qualified #12. In the opening round, his 6.80/202.47 fell to eventual winner Floyd Cheek's 6.77/205. Things went much better at Rockingham for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 6.71/207.08 qualified #1. In the first round, his 6.77/204.54 defeated Bob Holzer's 6.89/201. Another 6.77 at 204.49 in round two stopped Doug Kirk's 6.82/202. But he got out of shape in the semi-finals and shut down to 7.70/131.61 in a loss to Jon Yoak's 6.78/207. The IHRA teams all returned to Darlington shortly after that to finish running the Winternationals. In the first round, Montecalvo faced fellow Monte Carlo driver Tim Nabors and John's 6.73/205.82 beat Nabors' 6.82/203. He beat yet another Monte Carlo driver in the second round as his 6.76/205.94 trailered Steve Spiess's better 6.76/205. He faced low qualifier and eventual winner in the semi-final, and John fouled away a 6.76/204 while Holbrook advanced with a 6.72/205. IHRA's next event was the Summernationals held at Cordova. Montecalvo set Low ET during qualifying at 6.73/205.63. But only one GM car survived the first round of eliminations, and it wasn't his. John was upset when he was late off the line, and his 6.81/204.08 lost to Jeremy Bevins' 6.88/204. The GM guys needed to do something as every IHRA event had seen all-Ford battles in the finals. John qualified well in New York, where his 6.68/207.27 was #3 for the IHRA Empire Nationals. But an off-pace 6.85/173.67 in the first round lost to Bevins' 6.79/206. At the IHRA Northern Nationals, his 6.77/203.86 qualified second to Chris Holbrook's 6.75/205. In round one, his 6.78/205.26 beat Kirk's 6.85/203. In round two, he had problems and shut down to 10.81/81.30 in a loss to eventual winner Floyd Cheek's 6.85/203. He did not go to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals but was on the schedule at New England for the IHRA North American Nationals. He set a new track record 6.642 (at 209.04) in qualifying low for the field. Only thirteen cars had shown, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and ran 6.66/209.33. The car stayed in the 6.6's in round two as well, where his 6.69/208.84 defeated Cheek's 6.75/206. He then ran 6.66/208.94 in the semi-final to drop Bevins' 6.74/207. No one else had run in the 6.6's during eliminations. John went into the final against Ron Miller to make it an all-Chevy final. Montecarlo ran 6.69/208.52 to give the GM team its first win of the season (and only one of the year) over Miller's close 6.70/208. The momentum continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Autumn Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.69/208.09, right behind Holbrook's 6.67/207. These two would fight their way into the final. John started by running 6.70/207.46 over a tire-shaking Kirk. Gene Wilson's T-Bird had problems in round two, and John went 6.72/207.42 to advance. In the semi-final, he slowed to 6.77/206.65, but it was still enough to beat Dwayne Rice's 6.83/205. The two finalists were closely matched in performance, but Holbrook had lane choice due to his 6.73 in the semi-final.
