Notes: Research hasn't found the exact date that he teamed up with Sam and Mack Jones to run their successful '37 Chevy, but he was running his own '38 Chevy on May 11 when he won the GC class at Terre Haute Drag Strip. News reports that he won the CC class at Lawrenceville the following week in a '37 Chevy with a '56 Chevy engine. So it could have been that race when he teamed up with Sam and Mack Jones. Notes: Illegal B/FD (why considered illegal?); Steve Porter and Herb Ries spent $3000 building their dragster. Porter was a mechanic at Perkins GMC Sales and Ries was a student at Mt. San Antonio College, majoring in automobile design. Ries built the engine. Porter drove the dragster at Pomona on May 6, setting a new B/FD strip record with 8.78 at 179.28 mph. At Lions on May 26, Porter had the best time with 8.43 seconds, the fastest time run by any dragster in several weeks. At Lions on June 2, Porter turned the meet's fastest time with 8.57 at 180.00 mph. The next week on June 9 at Lions, Porter had the meet's fastest time with 8.63 seconds. This had been three consecutive weeks that he had gotten the fastest time, but unfortunately, it wasn't producing any eliminator wins. At San Gabriel Drag Strip on June 17, he got runner-up in top eliminator with a super quick 8.32 at 183.66 mph. At the Spring Drag Championships at Lions on June 23, Porter got the top speed of the night with 187.10 mph, but no win once again. On Sep. 8 at Fontana, Porter put his No. 3 national ranking on the line against Emory Cook, ranked No. 5. Porter was victorious. Finally a win came on Sep. 15 at Lions when he took top fuel eliminator honors. Strangely he didn't get the meet's top time which went to Bill Alexander (8.35) and Joe Purcell (183.66 mph). On Sep. 22 at Fontana, Porter faced Tommy Ivo for a 2-out-of-3 match with his national number 3 ranking on the line. His best times during the season had been 8.51 at 182.30 mph. But Ivo beat Porter to claim the No. 3 national ranking at Fontana, clocking 8.28 at 185.50 mph. At the Fall Drag Championships at Lions on Sep. 29, Porter got the meet's top time with 8.37 seconds. For two straight weeks at Lions, Porter beat previously unbeaten Don Prudhomme to win the top fuel eliminator title on Oct. 13 (8.41, 182.18 mph) and Oct. 20. Prudhomme phenomenal string of nine straight victories came to an end on Oct. 13 with Porter's win. On Nov. 10 at Lions, he got the night's top time with 185.18 mph. Porter upset Prudhomme to win top fuel eliminator at Lions on Nov. 24 and take home $1,000. At Pomona on Dec. 9, Porter joined the elite 7-second club when he turned 7.96 seconds. Notes: On April 25 this team was at Lions for an eight-car show. Don qualified #3 with an 8.21/191.08 and in the first round, his 8.37/189.46 advanced when Paul Sutherland lost a blower belt. In the semifinals, Moody took a bit of a nap as his 8.45/186.32 lost to Al Eshenbaugh's 8.55/185. Moody won at San Fernando on May 5. He stopped Steve Sturgeon in the final with an 8.28/189.

Notes: In the first week of June, Irwindale held the Tom Ferraro Benefit race. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, Moody's 7.07/219.50 (Top Speed) lost to Larry Dixon's 6.95. The NHRA Springnationals at Dallas International was a 32-car show. Don ran 6.79/213.77 in qualifying. In the first round, his 6.82/216.86 beat Raymond Beadle's 7.36/151. In round two, he got an easy pass when Richard Tharp fouled against him. In round three, he somehow got his 7.05/187.89 to the finish line ahead of Eddie Taylor's much quicker and faster 6.69/217. His run ended in the semi-final, where his 6.937 lost to the eventual winner, Bob Gibson's 6.936. On June 20, he competed at OCIR's March of Dimes event. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, he advanced when Gary Cochran fouled. He got another easy pass in the semi-final when Billy Tidwell was shut down on the line with a fuel leak. He went into the final against Gerry Glenn without making a hard run. The two had a great race in the final that saw Moody's 6.79/226.13 (Top Speed) finish runner-up to Glenn's 6.78/215. Moody was at Fremont for the second NHRA Division 7 race at the end of June. His 6.79 qualified #10. He made an easy pass to advance in the first round when Bill Dunlap lost fire on the line. In round two, his 6.88 lost to Bill Alexander's 6.79. The following week (July 3), he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. Unfortunately, his late 6.96/219.51 in the opening round fell to Dixon's 7.04/221. Shortly after that (July 11), he was at Lions for the AHRA All-American race. He only needed an 8.56/101 to advance in round one when Dixon fouled. But in round two, it was he who fouled against Kelly Brown. Moody shut down to 7.16/152.02.Best NHRA national event times of 6.769/216.86. He also ran 6.818 at Irwindale, CA, on 7/4/70.

Notes: The team ran at two NHRA national events this year. They were the fifth qualifier at Pomona at 6.775/218.44. In round one, Don beat a fouling Les Allen with a 6.87 (no speed). In round two, he took out Glen Woosley, 6.87/215.82 to 7.10. Jimmy King ended his day in round three, 6.82/218.44 to an off-pace 8.55/126.40. The team qualified #9 at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.672/196.50. In round one, he defeated Steve Carbone, 6.75/199.11 to 7.00/169.49, but Don Garlits got to him in round two, 6.58/211.26 to 7.07/155.44. Don also ran 6.59 at Irwindale Grand Prix 1971 and 6.64 at OCIR PDA Championship 71. The Lions 6.37 from the August 28, 1971, Drag News cover.
