Notes: Gary qualified at Pomona Winters at 5.976/242.58. We need to confirm that this is the car that ran at the Summers (247) and not the silver car. Beck started his '78 season by running a 6.26 to qualify #3 at the AHRA Winternationals. Against Jim Plummer, the car got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round. He then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the abovementioned times qualified Gary #7 in the field. A first-round 6.18/221 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.09/230. Great 5.855 ET at Columbus and 247.25 at Englishtown, but Gary dominated Ontario before breaking in the final. He ran amazing 5.763/250.00 numbers there in qualifying. We are listing these times here, but they may apply to the other 1978 entry for Gary. That shows blank times for now, but adjust when we get confirmation of which car ran which event. Gary became the 5th member of the NHRA 250 mph club with that pass.

Notes: Wide body Can-Am fueler with low, laid-back wing by Hume & Foster. When did the team begin using this car? Gary became the fifth member of the 250 mph club in Ontario in 1978. Confirm it was this car. Ran 6.093/235.60 at Indy 1978. Currently, the other entry for Gary in 1978 has the times listed. Info from Freddie Young.

Notes: Gary started his driving career driving for Larry Minor at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had run 5.88/237.46 to qualify #5, and in round one, his 6.01/238.72 beat Johnny Abbott's 6.05/243. In round two, his 6.02/238.72 lost to Connie Kalitta's 6.01/238. Gary qualified #1 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 5.86/234. A first-round 6.28 beat John Kimble, but he lost before the finals. He grabbed a win at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Baton Rouge on March 9. He qualified #1, and in the final, his 5.93/237.46 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Kelly Brown's 6.05/222 in his debut, driving the "Blue Max" dragster. Beck continued to get stronger with each race, and at Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the pole with a 5.818. He improved to a track record 5.717 at 243.24 in the first round to beat Dick LaHaie. Bob Noice broke on the line in the second round, and Gary soloed into the semifinals. He beat Richard Tharp driving the "Candies and Hughes" car with a 5.82. In the final, he faced Jeb Allen, and Allen ran a career-best 5.80 at 247 to get the victory over Beck's 5.92/236.22 runner-up attempt. NHRA ran the second Division 4 race at Green Valley Raceway on March 30, and Gary's 6.28 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. He narrowly won a close race with Tharp in the semifinals, where his 6.39/222.22 beat Richard's close 6.41/234. Beck was supposed to race Kalitta in the final, but Conrad had crashed into the safety net in his semifinal win and could not run in the final. Gary took an easy solo for the victory. He also won the third Division 4 race at Houston in April. However, only three cars showed up for the race. Beck set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.96, and in round one, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 5.97/235.60 to advance to the final. In the final, Steve Stephens broke, and Gary went 6.09/227.27 for the win. Another win came on April 27 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a tough show as it was only an eight-car show, but Gary's 5.95/238.72 qualified #4. A 6.04/239 in the first round beat Tharp's 6.05, and a semifinal 6.03/238 beat Shirley Muldowney's quicker 5.92. He was up against Allen in the final, and he reversed the outcome on the Gatornationals by stopping Jeb with a 5.93/239.36. Beck made a trip to OCIR in May for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Things didn't start so well there as he exploded a supercharger during qualifying on Friday. He made it worth his while as he came back out and qualified #1 with a 5.89 (Low ET) at 234.98. Gary beat Gary Ritter with a 5.94/236.84 and Kimble with a 6.04/231.95 before stopping Doug Kerhulas in the final with a 5.99/236.84. He skipped the Division 4 race at Amarillo but was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. His 5.98/236.84 qualified #6 for the show, and an improved 5.94/234.98 in the first round beat Mark Howick. In the second round, he smoked the tires to a 6.25 that lost to Stephens' 6.19. The team's next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was just an eight-car field, but Gack could qualify #3 with a 6.06. He ran a slightly improved 6.04 in the opening round to beat alternate Johnny Abbott's 6.22, and he improved even more to 6.00/232.55 in the semifinal to beat Allen's 6.18/214. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Jerry Ruth, and Ruth was tough as he had been the only car in the fives at this race. Sure enough, Jerry's 6.00/230 scored the victory over Beck's 6.14/218.44 runner-up bid. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.97 qualified #8. Gary's first-round 6.01/235.60 beat Bruce Hagestad's 6.14/229, but in round two, the car broke a fuel pump on the line, and Gary could only watch as Marvin Graham made a 5.94 solo into the semifinals. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.996/231.95. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Graham. Beck tried hard in their race, but Graham's 5.85 made it look easy as Gary was over two tenths back at 6.08. The Gainesville times were Gary's best on the 1980 NHRA tour. | Won Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge

Notes: First in the 5.50s, but not backed up for the record. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.632. Beck started the '81 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.92. In the first round, he ran an off pace 6.43 and lost to Marvin Graham's 6.08. He then ran at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.14/225.56 qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field, and he suffered another first-round loss when he ran a 6.40/211.26 to lose against Jerry Ruth (6.00/225). The following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, a best of 6.08 failed to qualify for the all five-second show. In April, things got better for the team when a 6.12/203.61 qualified #2 for the NHRA Western Regional Opener at Green Valley. A first-round 6.21/219.51 beat alternate David Pace (6.64/224), and in the semifinal, a 6.27/224.43 beat a tire-smoking Graham. In the final, he met Low ET setter (6.00), Gene Snow, and a 6.29/206.42 took the win when Snow's car broke. On April 26, he again failed to qualify when his 5.93 was the first alternate at the eight-car field for the NHRA Southern Nationals. In May, he rebounded with a runner-up finish to Gary Cornwall at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #4 with a 6.09/231.95 and beat John Kimble in the first round, with a 6.30/234.37. A 6.20/240.00 beat Rob Bruins in the semifinal, but a final round at 6.40/225.00 lost to Cornwall's 6.24/236. He finally got back into the fives again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 24 when a 5.88 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he fouled against Richard Tharp in the first round. Another runner-up performance came at Bandimere Speedway on May 30 for another NHRA Western Regional meet. He ran 5.95/223.88 over Jim Archer (6.35/217) in the first round, and then set Low ET with a 5.93/229.59 victory over Bruin's 6.33/215 in the semifinal. In the final, another good run of 5.97/227.84 was good for runner-up as Johnny Abbott's 5.95/230 beat him to the finish. A big win followed on June 21 at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.89/234.37 and beat Bruins, Jim Head, and Terry Capp to meet Butch Osmon in the Jim and Allison Lee car in the final. Beck won easily with a 6.05/224.99 when Butch had problems and slowed to 7.56/113. Things didn't stay so rosy as at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals, on July 4. A best of 6.12/208.81 in the thin air was a non-qualifier (#1 alternate). Again things changed for the better as he went out and won the NHRA Summernationals, setting Low ET at 5.74 in his semifinal victory over Jeb Allen and beating Mark Oswald in the final, 6.02/221.13 to Mark's 6.16/236.84. At the third NHRA Eastern Regional event at Indianapolis, he qualified #4 at 6.04. A first-round 5.98/219.51 beat George Tolon's 6.08/228. Doug Kerhulas stepped up with a 5.88/236 to put Beck's 5.96/223.32 on the trailer in the semi. Then he won at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.79, advanced past a fouling Jody Smart in the first round, and beat Tharp in the semis with a 5.83/236.84. In the final, a 6.01/231.95 beat Jeb Allen's 6.30/241. On July 26, he showed up in Atlanta for an NHRA Eastern Regional race and won that too. He qualified #3 with a 6.07/210.77 and ran a first-round 5.82/237.46 over Jenks Bailey, and a semifinal 5.97/216.86 took care of Smart (6.09/230). He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 5.80/243.24 defeat of Jim Head's 6.04/234. Gary's streak of wins ended on August 9 in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.74/246.57 and beat Doug Kerhulas with a 5.89/241.28 in the first round. Unfortunately, a broken fuel line in the semifinal gave Graham a single into the finals. He qualified #1 again at Indy with a track record 5.63 at 244.56 but again failed to reach the finals. Oswald stopped Beck in the first round, at the IHRA US Open on September 13. Gary ran an off pace 6.37 to lose to Mark's 5.82/212. In October, he qualified #2 at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals but was upset by Connie Kalitta in the first round. Then came the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #3 with a 5.72/226.13 and a first-round 5.73/233.76 beat Dick LaHaie (5.83/233). Round two saw Beck's 5.72/239.36 beat Lucille Lee (5.95/234), and in the semi's, a 5.77/236.84 beat Shirley Muldowney (5.97/211). In the final, Beck dropped a bombshell, his 5.57/245.23 defeated Dwight Salisbury and broke the track et record of 5.77 held by Muldowney since May of '77.

Notes: Gary Beck debuted Larry Minor's new Swindahl-built car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On the opening day of qualifying (Thursday), while everyone else was having trouble just trying to run a "five," Gary came out and ran 5.69. On Saturday, he picked it up to a 5.52/251.39, far ahead of #2 qualifier Jody Smart, who was in with a 5.77. Beck's had now qualified #1 for the fifth straight NHRA national event. He almost lost in the opening round, where the car broke a rear end and coasted through with a 19-second time, but his opponent, Richard Tharp, driving for Kilpatrick and Connell, fouled against him. Rain interfered, and the second round wasn't run until a week later. In that round, he ran 5.60 to beat Jim Barnard's 5.88. But in the semifinals, Beck faced Shirley Muldowney, and while she was streaking to a 5.68 to advance, Gary was filling the area with tire smoke as he overpowered the track. Everything went more according to plan at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, Beck qualified #1, this time with a 5.54/242.90. The spread to the #2 qualifier wasn't as large as at Pomona, as Shirley's 5.57/252 qualified #2. Beck opened with a 5.74/241.28 over Chris Karamesines' 5.91/241, and a strong 5.49/252.80 in round two took out Tharp's 5.63/252. In the semifinals, he faced his boss Minor, who, in round two, had opened some eyes with a 5.51. But Minor lost a blower belt while Gary ran a new NHRA record 5.44 at 252.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Connie Kalitta, and the "Bounty Hunter" went into hard tire shake and shut off while Beck ran another 5.49 at 251.39 for the victory. The team's next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 5.55/245.90 for the pole. He streaked to 5.42 (Low ET) at 252 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Minor. His 5.56/246 beat Kalitta's 5.73/241 in the semifinals. He went up against Tharp in the final, and Richard had lane choice as he had won his semifinal race with a 5.54. But it seemed like Beck's crew chief, Bernie Fedderly, could make the car run just about any number he wanted. Beck ran 5.53/249 in the final to pick up another victory over Tharp's 5.70/245. World Champ 1983. Ran 5.391/252.10 at Fremont (first in the 5.3s), then duplicated the feat at the World Finals. Gary went 5.448 National Record at Gainesville to provide early season thrills. Notes: Gary qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.51. Unfortunately, he fouled against Don Garlits in the first round. Garlits, in his not-yet-updated '81 car, got Beck to red-light by hitting the throttle before the green. He again qualified #1 at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where a 5.47 (Low ET) at 250.69 gave him the spot. A 5.53/249.30 advanced in the first round, when Gene Snow broke. In round two, he beat Dick LaHaie with a 5.55/251.39. In the semifinals, he raced his boss, Larry Minor, and Beck's 5.62/249.30 won over Minor's 5.99/220. This set up a final between him and Joe Amato, who had recorded the first 260 mph run in his semifinal race. Joe got the win with a 5.54/262 over Beck's runner-up effort of 5.68/245.90. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Gary slipped to #3 in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 5.60/253.52. A blown engine finished him in the first round. The Larry Minor team showed at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. Beck ran 5.48/259.36 to qualify first. An improved 5.45/261.62 beat Butch Blair, while in round two, he set Low ET with a 5.41/261.62 that beat Danny Danell. In the semifinals, he also set Top Speed with a 5.53/262.39 that beat Denver Schutz. In the final, he ran his boss. Gary took the victory with a 5.49/253.52 over Larry's 5.67/256. Back on the NHRA tour for the Cajun Nationals. Beck ran 5.60/252.10 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. He beat LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.64/253.52 while a 5.53/259.36 advanced in the semifinals when Amato broke a rear end. Once again, Gary had to run his boss, this time for an NHRA victory. Beck got another win with a 5.69/252.10 over Minor at 5.91/246. His next win came at NHRA's next race, the Springnationals. There he qualified #1 at 5.52/257.14 and in the first round, he ran a solo 5.63/255.68. In the second round, Connie Kalitta fouled, and Beck advanced with a 5.69/245.23. He soloed again in the semifinals after Doug Kerhulas could not show after crashing into the catch net in his second-round race. Gary ran 5.49 (Low ET) at 258.62 to advance. In the final, he was up against Amato. Gary got the win with a 5.54/257.14 over Joe's 5.70/243. He kept racking up the wins when he won the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 5.57/259.36 and beat Danell in the first round, and LaHaie in the semifinals to meet Minor in the final. Gary won the event with a final round 5.76/239.36 over Larry's 6.45/144.00. This was Beck's 18th win in NHRA National Events. The NHRA Summernationals marked a low point in Top Fuel racing when only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Beck ran 5.52 to qualify #2. He lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against eventual winner Frank Bradley. The next stop on the NHRA schedule was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gary set a track record 5.51 in qualifying #1, but in the first round, he lost to Kalitta, who would go on to win. He again qualified #1 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd with a 5.56/257.14, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Gary Ormsby. The NHRA US Nationals at Indy was not a good showing for Beck. Sure he qualified #1 with a 5.51/251.39, but in the first round, a camshaft broke, and the car showed to a 6.59/134 loss to Minor's 6.45/162.

Notes: After such dominating performances in the past few years, it was strange to see Gary Beck/Larry Minor getting beat. Sure he had lost before, but it was usually due to breakage. But by '85, the other teams had caught up. In Jan, he was at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event for a best of three match against Don Garlits. Things did not go his way as he lost all three races and ran a best of 5.71/225.56 compared to Garlits' best of 5.45/259. Gary started the NHRA season by qualifying #4 at the Winternationals with a 5.55/224.43. In the first round, he faced Garlits, who qualified way back (12th) with a 5.87. Don stepped up to a 5.53/258 to beat Beck's 5.68/235. After that, it was on to the Gatornationals. Gary's best of 5.80/253.52 could do no better than #9 in qualifying. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato. Joe lost an engine in that race, but his 5.51/238 still beat Beck's 5.69/242. Two events and two first-round losses. Well, it got worse when the team failed to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A best of 5.78/251.25 left Gary as the second alternate. He rebounded somewhat by winning the Bakersfield March (May?) Meet. He qualified #6 there with a 5.83/240, and in the final, he beat Shannon Stuart's 5.80/251 with a 5.64/245. The Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge was next on the calendar. It was an eight-car show, and Beck qualified #5 with a 5.69. Both he and Bill Mullins ran 5.74 in the first round, but Mullins came out on top. On June 16, Gary got his first NHRA national event round win at the Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.61/246.31, and in the first round, a 5.67/244 got past Chris Karamesines, who had his chute deploy. In round two, a 5.60/247 beat Gene Snow, and in the final, he ran a 5.71/245 that finished runner-up to Mullins' 5.62/257. In Canada for the Grandnationals later that month, he again lost in round one. It was another eight-car show, and Gary's 5.59/260.26 qualified #5, setting up a first-round race with low qualifier Amato. Joe ran 5.68/253 to eliminate Beck's 5.87/243.24. | Beck Finished 2nd in '84, Minor finished 6th. Low ET at the inaugural Keystones at 5.400. (Drag Racing Magazine). Beck also beat blower-exploding Ormsby to win the '85 Finals. - Joe Moore

Notes: Gary started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.60/253.52. He improved to a 5.414/254.23 in the first round, over low qualifier Dick LaHaie who got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the second round, he smoked his tires and shut off to 11.84/63.73, which lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.52/253. The NHRA Gatornationals was the team's next stop, and Beck qualified #2 with a 5.47/259.36. He beat Hank Endres in the first round, with a 5.58/253.52, while a round two 5.63/257.87 beat Kalitta's quicker 5.60/255. In the semifinals, Gary ran a strong 5.51/260.71, but he lost to LaHaie's stronger 5.47/258. He again qualified #2 at NHRA's next event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This time a 5.49/259.96 got him the spot. He ran Chris Karamesines in the first round, and his 5.62/253.52 beat the "Greek's" 6.08/175. But in the second round, crew chief Bernie Fedderly put too much power into it, and Beck smoked the tires shutting off to 11.01/70 in a loss to Bill Mullins. Beck then made a stop at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet now held in May. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.55/257.14 and an improved 5.45/263.15 advanced past Denver Schutz, who shut off on the line in the first round. In the semifinals, it was Beck against Don Garlits. There was no love lost between these two. This time Garlits' unreal 5.37/271 was too much for Beck's 5.59/262.39. Back on the NHRA Trail for the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, the Miller American team had all kinds of problems and could only qualify #15 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.77/243.44. Fedderly worked his magic, and the car responded with a 5.63/250.34 in the first round, to beat Frank Bradley's 5.73/242. In round two, Beck had a close one with Joe Amato. Gary's 5.68/245.96 just nipped Joe's 5.69/249. In the semifinals, Gary once again met up with Garlits. This time he gambled on the 'tree and lost giving "Big Daddy" an easy 5.99/241 run into the final. If they thought they were running badly at Baton Rouge, they were not ready for National Trail. There they ran 5.79/247.86 for the "bump" spot at the NHRA Springnationals. This was uncharacteristic for the team. A first-round 5.75/248.34 lost to Jody Smart's 5.64/218 in the first round. Things were not much better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.77/245.23 qualified #11, and a first-round 5.59/256.41 lost to Garlits' 5.43/268. The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, listed a 5.378 for Gary, but we cannot find evidence of that. Removing that ET until we can validate.

Notes: In January, Gary was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. The car was now equipped with a new 3-stage clutch from L&T. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.66/238.09, but he broke on the burnout against Joe Amato in the first round, where he blower seized, and the car lost fire. He went to Pomona with the car weighing 130 lbs. less than it had at Firebird Raceway. But the weekend turned out to be far from good. A transmission broke on his first qualifying attempt, and the burst plate broke on his second, resulting in a 5.737 to claim the fifth alternate slot. His third run was a 5.78/244.89. That was a new high speed for the McGee engine. He qualified #16 at Sonoma at 5.487/257.06 but broke against Frank Bradley in round one. Gary qualified #13 at Seattle at 5.404/258.17 and upset Earl Whiting in round one, 5.484/259.89, to a 10-second shutoff. He broke against Darrell Gwynn in round two. Gary was a DNQ at Indy with a 5.886/179.31 best. He was the sixth alternate at the World Finals but recorded his best times of the year at 5.304/264.31.

Notes: Gary impressed many at the season opener at Pomona when he qualified the McGee car in the #8 spot with a 5.13/282.57. He won his first-round race with an off pace 7.04/199.95, but opponent Jim Head had even more trouble. In round two, Beck ran a 5.40/258.10 but lost to Dennis Forcelle's 5.11/269. In July, Gary also made the field at the California Nationals, running a 5.26/275.39 for the bump spot. A first-round 5.44/271.90 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.11/288. Another good showing came at Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Gary ran a 5.22/275.22 for the #15 spot in the field, and in the first round, he ran Shirley Muldowney. The lady won the race with a 5.16/283 to Beck's 5.35/268.01. He attempted to qualify at the World Finals back at Pomona, but his best of 5.41/253.87 left him the seventh alternate. | Also 5.21 280.88 at a Sacramento match race against Lori Johns (ND). I think David Baca's Trans Am won that day, also. - Joe Moore
