Notes: Irwindale had a big $$$ bounty on their head for them being undefeated for several weeks straight. They ran some legitimate 7.20s at many different tracks. But alas, they never toured and didn't get the fame they deserved. - Bill Duke | Confirmed 7.46/210.76 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships 2/11/66 and 7.58 at 205.94 at Bakersfield 3/66. Home-built chassis, per 6/66 Drag Racing. | It's hard to say who was the winningest Top Fuel driver in '66, but it was hard to bet against Beebe. Dave qualified fifth with a 7.82/201.76 on January 23 at the Jackpot Pro-Circuit race at Pomona. He set Low ET with a 7.59 over John Mulligan in the second round, but he lost in the semis. At the AHRA Winternats, he set Top Speed at 213.76 but failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #21 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.79, but he lost in the first round, to Ronnie Hampshire. At Lions on February 26 for the UDRA Winternationals, he ran a 7.46/210.76 (Top Speed) to qualify second in the 32-car field and went all the way, winning over a fouling Bobby Tapia in the final. On March 26, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. Dave qualified #1 with a 7.63/198.66 and ran 7.69/202.70 over Ken Safford (7.97), 7.74/203.16 over Dave Babler, and 7.74/201.78 over Bob Hightower in the semifinal. In the final, he met Nick Marshall, who ran a track record 7.41/199 over Beebe's 7.68/191.08. Ironically, the old track record 7.46 was set by Dave on February 15. He set Top Speed again in qualifying #1 at 7.62/211.76 on April 2 at a 16-car field at Irwindale. A first-round 7.63/211.54 beat Joe Shubert (7.72/199.24). In the second round, his 7.70/210.08 beat an off pace 10.64 by John Mulligan, but Danny Ongais stepped up in the semis to a 7.66/208.32 over Beebe's 7.74/205.46. The next day (April 3) at Carlsbad for the Division 7 opener, Dave ran 7.71/209.78 over Steve Carbone (7.96/195.22), an 8.08/193.54 over Roy Shoults, but he fouled in the semis to eventual winner Tom McEwen. He was back at Irwindale on April 9 and beat Mike Snively in the semifinal with a 7.62 putting him in the final against Tommy Allen. Unfortunately, a breaker went out, and the track lost power, so Tommy and Dave split the purse due to the lateness. He won an eight-car show at Lions on April 23, qualifying #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43/213.76. He ran 7.50/211.76 and 7.53/208.32 before winning with an 8.01/130.24 when John Mulligan fouled. The following day (April 24), he runner-upped to Tom McEwen at Pomona for the Jackpot Pro Circuit race. He got past a fouling Ron Hampshire in the first round, with a 7.85/178.92, and he ran a second-round solo at 7.67/180.00. In the semifinal, he beat Chuck Griffith with a 7.60/208.80. In the final, McEwen's 7.61/204 beat his 7.64/208.80. As April came to an end, Dave tried for another win at Beeline's Third Annual Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, a 7.67/180.36 beat Ken Safford, but while coming to the line to face McEwen in the semifinal, Beebe found himself with no oil pressure and shut off. He rebounded by winning an eight-car show at Lions on May 7. A 7.59/204.54 qualified #4, and Dave ran 7.57/209.78 (Top Speed) and 7.67/205 to get to the final. He wasn't the quickest in the final, but he got there first with a 7.70/208.80, beating Safford's 7.63/201 in Ted Gotelli's car. On May 8 at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race, he ran a 7.61/192.70 in the final to win over Tommy Allen's quicker 7.57/208.32. He won again on May 22 at the Division 7 race at Sacramento, beating Don Cook in the final. A week later (May 28), he won a big sixteen-car show at Lions. A 7.66/202.70 beat Frank Pedregon in the first round, while in round two, his 7.59/207.37 beat Mulligan's quicker 7.51/204. A 7.54/215.34 beat an ailing Safford in the semifinals, and he wrapped up the win with a final round 7.53/215.30 that stopped Rick Stewart's 7.63/210. The following day he won at the Santa Maria Jackpot race. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.92/202.24. He didn't do so well at an eight-car show at Lions on June 4. Dave qualified #2 with a 7.42/211.76, and a 7.41/210.76 got past the first-round, but in the semifinals, his car failed to fire, and eventual winner Al Freeman advanced. A week later, he was back at Lions, where he ran 7.79 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. He lost to Mulligan's 7.51/187 in the first round, with a 7.86/167.69, but John hurt his engine and could not continue, so Beebe got back in on the "break rule." After that, he stopped Nick Marshall's 7.69/204 in the semifinals with a 7.60/207.85. But in the final, he fouled away a 7.78 and lost to Carbone's 7.70. Another win came on July 23 at Irwindale when he stopped Jeep Hampshire in the final. He fouled in the final against John Edmunds on August 14 at the Bonneville Division 7 race. Another runner-up finish came on October 7 at an eight-car race at Carlsbad. After running 7.54/201.78 over Dominic Cardoza (8.07/200.48) and 7.44/205.46 over a motor-blowing Ronny Graham, he lined up against Leroy Goldstein in the final, and he lost a motor while Goldstein won with a 7.39/194.80. The following day (October 8) saw Beebe qualify first with a Low ET of the meet 7.39 and then leave, not hanging around to race and just testing their new motor. They tested it well as later that day, they showed up at Lions and qualified #1 with a track record 7.12. He went on to run a 7.27/201.78 in the first round, and a 7.30/168 in round two. In the final, he faced Jack Ewell and lost, taking another runner-up finish. Beebe won again on October 15 at Irwindale, setting Low ET in round one, with a 7.30/208.80 over Goldstein and Top Speed with a second-round 7.40/215.30 over Rick Stewart's 7.83/203.60. In the final, he beat Cardoza. Another big win came on October 22 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. A first-round 7.37/183.94 beat a fouling Gary Cassidy, and a final round 7.59/200.80 beat Gerry Glenn. Pete Robinson's 7.27/203.16 got him in the final at the NHRA World Finals. Another win came his way at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale on November 26. He took it all, qualifying #1 with a 7.19, which held for Low ET. He then set Top Speed at 216 and won the meet. On December 26 at the UDRA Championships at Irwindale, he qualified fifth with a 7.39/217.38 and a first-round 7.47/198.66 beat Bill Alexander. In the second round, he lost oil pressure and shut off on the line, advancing James Warren. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. Confirmed 7.68 at OCIR Also 7.90/194.80 Low ET and Top Speed at OCIR Funny Car Championships. Dave was driving the "Beebe and Fedak" Top Fuel car until the end of July. On August 17, he showed up at Irwindale behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's "Super Chief" Dodge Charger FC. The race was between FC's and Fuel Altereds. In the first round, he ran an 8.21/186.72 that lost to Leon Fitzgerald's 8.11/184 in the "Pure Heaven." In the second round, he picked up to a winning 7.80/191.88 over a crossed up Gary Reed in the "Groundshaker." In the third race, he ran 8.32/190.66 that lost to Sush Matsubara's 7.78/192. It was obvious that the car could run. On August 31, he went to OCIR for a sixteen-car show. Dave set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 7.74/187.88 over Larry Barker's "Psycho" Mustang. In the semifinals, a 7.81/184.80 beat Gene Conway in the "Destroyer" Jeep at 8.27. Unfortunately, in the final, the transmission let go and Gas Ronda soloed for the victory. OCIR held a Fuel Altered vs. Funny Car race on September 21. Once again, Beebe was there. He beat Willie Borsch in the first round, with an 8.35/187.50. A second round 7.95/183.20 beat Matsubara's 8.09/197. And in round three, he made it a clean sweep by beating Fitzgerald's 8.17/189 with an 8.11/191.48. On October 5, OCIR held a 10 car round-robin race. Beebe won two of his three races with a best of 7.95/189.06 while beating Fred Goeske. |

Notes: Dave was driving for Crossley at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #26 with a 7.21/197.80, but he improved to a first-round 6.94/226 to beat Ron Manke. Beebe ran an easy solo in round two when Tom McEwen failed to make it to the line on time and in round three his 7.43/221.12 got around Jim Dunn who shut off early. In the semifinals, he faced eventual winner James Warren, and Dave's 7.29 lost to Warren's 7.26. The team failed to qualify at the Stardust National Open at Las Vegas. |

Notes: In mid-1969 Big John rebuilt his 'Cuda, replacing the old 392 with a Keith Black 426. The car was repainted, relettered, and Dave Beebe drove at the '69 PDA meet at OCIR, winning Funny Car eliminator over Ongais in the M/T Mach 1. Ran 7.38/205. Rich Siroonian was back at the wheel by Indy. 120" chassis, Fiberglass Trends body. | Just before July, Mazmanian switched from a 392 Hemi to a Keith Black 426 Hemi mounted farther back in the chassis. At Irwindale for their Fourth of July race, Beebe qualified second with a 7.73, but broke against Larry Fullerton in the semis. The next day (July 5) for the OCIR Nitro Championships, he qualified third with a 7.64, but lost early. At Irwindale's Race with a Reason on July 12, Beebe won the first-round with a 7.54/195.64 over Ray Alley (7.93/184.82), but both he and Bob Smith broke in the semis with Dave taking the win. In the final against Danny Ongais, he broke again and lost. He beat Ongais in the final at the PDA Championships on July 19 with a 7.45/205.01 (Top Speed) over Danny's 7.55/193.54. He qualified #1 with a 7.56 and a first-round 7.45 beat Steve Bovan (7.90). In the second round, he set Low ET at 7.38/204.08 over Gas Ronda (8.93). In the semifinal a 7.89 beat Gene Conway (10.86). On August 2 he was at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships. Dave made it to the final by stopping Larry Fullerton in the semifinals with a strong 7.44/202.24. In the final, he fouled against Pete Bagnard's Nova. Another win came on August 9 at the OCIR Anniversary Race. He singled with a 7.94/191.08 when Pete Bagnard broke. Ran a semifinal 7.64/197.80 (Top Speed) over Gary Gabelich who brushed the guardrail, and a final round 7.61/197.36 (Low ET) over Ed Lenarth who broke. Shortly after this Rich Siroonian returned to driving John's car. - Ron Howard |

Notes: The roof was blown off this car late in 1969 at Irwindale. | On May 17, for an eight-car show at Irwindale, Dave qualified #1 with a 7.67. In the first round, he beat Gas Ronda (8.21/185.18) with Low ET and Top Speed of 7.62/200.00. Both he and Mike Van Sant broke in the semifinal, with Van Sant crossing the line first. The Invader couldn't repair, so Dave was reinstated to run Rich Siroonian in the final. A holeshot win by Siroonian at 7.79/190.26 beat Beebe's 7.77/196.06. Another eight-car field at Irwindale on May 30 saw Ronda's 7.81/185.18 beat Dave in the first round. The next day at OCIR for the Funny Car 500, he qualified second with a 7.56/199.11 but broke a rear in the first round. He faced off against Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian at Irwindale on June 21. Reyes' 7.62/180 beat his 7.70/194.38 in the first race, but a 7.63/197.36 beat the Hawaiian's 7.93/182.92 in the second race. So for the tiebreaker, Beebe ran a 7.59/201.34 but lost to Reyes 7.65/189.46. On July 4, he showed up at Irwindale in John Mazmanian's Cuda. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Beebe started the season in Nelson Carter's Super Chief at the Irwindale New Year's Day race, where he qualified third with a 7.63. A first-round 7.65/193.54 beat Jess Tyree (7.96/180.72). But the Charger broke and could not be fixed for round two. He beat Rich Siroonian in the first round, at the AHRA Winternationals, but a 7.64 by Dick Harrell beat him in the second round. An 8.277/188.28 qualified the car tenth at the NHRA Winternationals, but he got crossed-up against Don Schumacher in the first round, and lost. On February 9 at OCIR, Beebe showed up driving a top fuel dragster. At Bakersfield, he drove both, losing in the first round, in both classes. In the funny, he lost to Danny Ongais (7.80/196.07) in the first round, with a 7.97/185.95. He again drove in both Top Fuel and Funny Car at the HRM Championships, losing in both classes in round two. He qualified the Charger sixth with a 7.86 and beat Randy Walls (8.10/173.74) with a 7.88/192.71 in the first round. Pat Foster's 7.66/191.48 dropped his 7.78/196.50 in the next frame. On March 22, for an eight-car meet at Lions, Dave set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 7.51/195.65, but both he and Mike Van Sant ran identical numbers of 8.08/188.67 with Van Sant's Corvette advancing. He showed up at the final OCIR All-Pro event but broke in the first round, advancing Don Schumacher. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Dave Beebe qualified sixth with a 7.06/203.60 at the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, a 7.15 covered Chris Karamesines' 7.40. Unfortunately, he fouled against Cliff Zink. On February 9, Beebe ran a 7.17/218.96 to qualify seventh in the eight-car field at OCIR's second All-Pro race. A first-round 7.01/211.76 beat John Mulligan's 7.11/208. In the semifinal, eventual winner Larry Dixon beat him. Dixon got to Dave again in the first round, on March 2 at the Bakersfield March Meet. |

Notes: Also ran 7.17 at OCIR 2/69. Also ran 7.09 at Riverside Raceway Hot Rod Championships 69. | The team of Leonard Van Luven, Dan Hangsleben, and Dave Beebe ran well early in '69. At Long Beach early in the year, the team made five 7.0 runs with the best being a 7.05 with speeds consistently over 220. The 187" chassis was from Woody Gilmore. The engine was a stock stroke 392 that used unusual Enderle barn door injectors. Beebe showed his sense of humor when he was asked why the car didn't have a nosepiece. He responded by saying that "the car had poor owners and couldn't afford one." |

Notes: Dave started the year by qualifying third with a 7.52 at Irwindale's New Year’s Day Race. He smoked his tires in the first round, to an 8.25/129.10 that lost to Gas Ronda's 7.43/196. On Jan 4, he raced at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He won his first-round with a 7.46/200.89 over Marv Eldridge who shut off, but the drivetrain broke in the Challenger in the semifinal and Charlie Allen's 7.45/175 advanced to the final. At the second All-Pro event on January 18, he advanced past the first-round when Ray Alley broke, but again he had troubles when his transmission let go in the semifinal advanced Gene Conway. On January 26 he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show, but a 7.67/179 by Charlie Allen in the first round, beat his 7.73/186.22. At the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 22, he won his first-round race with a 7.41/189.07 over Danny Ongais' 7.69/193 in the Mickey Thompson Mustang. Unfortunately, he hurt the motor and was unable to run in the semifinal. He competed at Famoso on March 8 for the March Meet. He beat Bob Pickett's 7.88/182 in the first round, with a 7.86/189.46, but a semifinal 7.67/190.66 lost to Hank Clark's 7.65/195. The following week saw Dave at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified, but a broken blower manifold kept him out of the show. On March 28, he won the final OCIR All-Pro race. They ran 16-cars at the final event. In the first round a 7.74/157.61 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.01/177. Dave ran an easy single in the second round when Jim Adolph lost reverse after his burnout and was unable to run. An easy 8.16/177.86 got him into the final when Don Hampton fouled. A final round 7.56/196.07 beat Tom McEwen. On April 4, Irwindale held an eight-car show. Beebe finished runner-up after running 7.76/190.26 over Hampton's Corvette, and a 7.62/188.66 over Leroy Hales. In the final, both he and Mike Snively ran 7.65, but Mike got there first. He took another win on April 18 at an eight-car show at OCIR. Dave qualified #5 with a 7.45/188.67. A first-round 7.50/191.89 beat Adolph, and in the semis a 7.46/185.56 advanced when Ongais suffered a broken fuel pump. A final round 7.45/195.22 took the win when Gene Conway broke a rear end. He won at OCIR again on May 2 over a 28 car field for the Big Four Championships. Dave beat Jack Chrisman in the first round, with a 7.61/177.51, and Mert Littlefield lost to Dave's 7.54/178.92 in the second round. He got an easy win in the third round when Alley fouled. In the semifinal, he ran a 7.42/195.65 over Snively's 7.59/196. In the final he met Manuel Herrera driving John Lombardo's normally gas powered Corvette that had switched to Nitro for this event. Manuel lost a transmission and Dave won with a 7.71/185.18. Dave qualified #14 at the NHRA Springnationals in June, but a first-round 7.53 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.36. He also suffered a first-round loss on June 20 at the OCIR March of Dimes race. A 7.50/192.30 lost to Ray Alley's 7.41/193. Dave was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships. He beat Dean LaPole's "King Camaro" in the first round, with a 7.75/191.48, but he lost a close race against Snively in the second round. Mike's 7.46/180 beat his 7.48/195.22. Irwindale held a 16-car show on July 17 and an 8.05/171.10 qualified Beebe #6. He beat Chrisman in the first round, with an 8.02 and a 7.90 advanced past a fouling Bob McFarland in the second round. He singled in the semifinals when both John Lombardo and the break rule car of Larry Fullerton broke. In the final, Gene Conway beat him with Low ET of the meet, a 7.63 to Dave's 7.97. He returned to Irwindale on July 25 for a best two out of three match race against Dave Hough's "Nanook" AA/FA. It was a good match with some close racing. In the first race the fuel altered ran 7.59/196 that lost to Beebe's 7.55/190.66. In the second race, Hough evened the score with a 7.34/207 beating the Challenger's 7.55/193.12. In the final race, Hough wrapped up the match with a 7.35/206 beating Beebe's 7.97/190.66. Dave picked up a win on August 1 at the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships. He ran 7.48/201.54 (Top Speed) over Mert Littlefield, a 7.58/179.28 over Marv Eldridge, and a 7.56/176.12 over Dick Poll. In the final, he ran an easy 8.05/176.81 when Bob McFarland blew his motor on the line. At the OCIR Anniversary race on August 15, he beat Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 7.54/199.11, but he fouled away a 7.43/193.54 in the second round against Snively. Dave found himself in another final round on August 29 at OCIR for an eight-car show. Beebe advanced past a broken Bovan in the first round, with a 7.38/208.81. In the semifinals, Don Schumacher broke a rear end and once again Dave advanced. He faced Snively in the final and despite running a good 7.34/197.36 he lost to Mike's 7.33/201. On September 12, Irwindale held an eight-car show and Dave won his first-round race over Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" with a 7.53/192.70. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.88/197.80 that lost to Conway's 7.42/197. He set a 7.08 track record at OCIR in qualifying #1 for the Lions Anniversary Meet. He went on to win by running 7.19/193.13 over a broken Bob McFarland and 7.36/190.27 over John Collins in the "Atlas Oil Tool Car" in the semifinals. In the final he beat Frank Rupert driving Don Cook's Corvette with a 7.24/191.89. | The 7.53/189.07 were the best NHRA times. |

Notes: Ed Wills was the owner of a construction company. He got into drag boat racing before entering drag racing. At first, he ran top fuel cars, and then he started to produce fiberglass Funny Car bodies. Figuring he might as well use one as a billboard, he had this Funny Car built. The car used a Keith Black 426 Hemi that was stroked to just under 450 cubic inches. A Lenco two-speed delivered the power to a Halibrand rear with 5.14 gears. The Charger weighed 1,900 lbs. Then he needed a driver, and who better to pick than Dave Beebe? | Dave started the season driving for Nelson Carter in the "Super Chief." The ride didn't last long as he drove that car at the Bakersfield March Meet on the 8th, but one week later, on March 14, he was behind the wheel of the "Mr. Ed" car at Fremont for its Northern Nationals. The car wasn't running too well as its ailing 15.13 in the first round attests. He lost to Tom McEwen's 7.00. Beebe was at Champion Raceway on May 8, where he ran 4.68/145.86 on the 1/8 mile track. In June, he was still driving the "Mr. Ed" car when he won the OCIR March of Dimes race. It was an eight-car show, and Dave started towards his victory by beating Gary Burgin in the first round, with a 7.01/209.30. He soloed in the semifinals when Leroy Hales lost a rod in the "Lil Demon." In the final, he pushed the "Mr. Ed" car to a career-best speed (to this point) of 216.34 along with a 6.90 to beat runner-up Ray Alley's 7.18. |

Notes: Undefeated at SIR until McCulloch beat them on 8/05/72. Despite the loss, set 6.49/224 track records at SIR Seafair Funny Car Nats (14,000 fans watched.) Won the 1972 OCIR PDA Championships, beating Gary Burgin in the final. Also #1 qualifier, Low ET and Top Speed (6.551/223.32) at Tulsa PRA race. Ran 6.49 at Seattle on August 15/1972. Featured in the 2/73 issue of Hi-Performance Cars. - RT | Art Whipple teamed up with Ed Wills for the '72 season. Wills was still the owner of the car, but Art came on board with his mechanical skills. The 118" Don Long car cost Ed $25,000 to build. It used a 1,700 hp Keith Black Hemi. The crank rods, and pistons all came from KB's shop. Engle supplied the cam. The blower was the work of Marc Danekas and an Enderle injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed with a Crowerglide flywheel and clutch was used. Wills built the Satellite body and Kenny Youngblood painted the realistic-looking grill. The lettering was done by Neil Aveill while the candy red and gold paint was sprayed on by Ron Schramek. The car weighed 1,800 lbs. and according to the January '73 Drag Racing USA issue, it had run a best of 6.40/225 up until that time (the magazine had three month lead time). Confirmed 6.48 at Lions. ET from (Drag Racing USA 1/73) |

Notes: Beebe was driving the "Mr. Ed" car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.63/199.55 qualified #13 on the hard to get a grip Pomona track surface. An opening round 7.47 beat Leroy Goldstein's 7.69 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In the second round, he blew the clutch, and his slowing 12.69 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 7.50 in Ray Alley's Charger. He was still behind the wheel of this car on March 18, when he ran it at Fresno Dragway for the Winter Race of Champions event. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.47. The second qualifier was way back at 6.73! An opening round 6.56/219 beat Sush Matsubara's 6.85/211. Beebe got to solo in the semifinal when Mike Van Sant lost fire in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. Dave advanced with a 7.48/126. He went up against the second qualifier in the final, Jim Murphy. Beebe would not be denied as his 6.82/200.44 easily won over Murphy's 7.11/212. The following week (March 24), he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Dave qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. in the opening round, Gervase O'Neil's 7.53/133 lost to Dave's 6.96/206.42. But Beebe had problems in round two with a shut-off 9.86/69.87 that lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.96/213. |
