Notes: After Shirley destroyed her Buttera built '72 Mustang at Dragway 42 during the second round of eliminations at the IHRA Summernationals (August 11/13), she borrowed Don Schumacher's 1970 Indy winning Buttera built Barracuda. She had the Cuda repainted and lettered and tried unsuccessfully to qualify for the field at Indy (L&M photo from IRP). At the 1972 IHRA Nationals (DIMS October 13/15), she qualified ninth (6.70/207) and lost to low qualifier Don Schumacher in the first round.

Notes: The car was destroyed at IHRA Dragway 42 on August 20, 1972, putting Muldowney in the hospital with burns. The incident was not depicted accurately in the movie Heart Like A Wheel. Shirley ran 6.70 in Connecticut, 6.82/205.90 at Epping, NH. Muldowney failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. She was not alone as many good cars failed to make the field, including Richard Tharp, Larry Fullerton, the "Ramchargers," and "Pisano and Mastsubara."On February 26, she had one of six cars competing in Orlando. Muldowney did well, finishing runner-up to Mart Higginbotham. On March 12, Shirley lost a best-of-three match race to Gary Bolger at Edgewater. Her 7.0's-207 lost to the "Golddigger's" 6.9's-210. The following week (March 19), she failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Shortly after that, she was back at Edgewater for a best-of-three match race against Frank Huff, driving the "Super Vega."Shirley won all three of their races, running a best of 6.94/200.44. Unfortunately, at her next match race, held at Kilkare Dragway on March 25, she lost all three of her races against Larry Arnold, driving the "Kingfish."On April 30, her 6.8's at 210 beat Dick Bourgeois in the "Doug's Headers" Vega two straight. In May, Muldowney was one of four FC's that competed at Tri-City. In her first race, she ran 6.90/208 to beat Connie Kalitta's 7.23/172. An off-pace 8.55 lost to Jim Paoli's 6.76 in her second race, and the car died on the line in her last race, giving Butch Maas a single. A Monday night show was run at Toronto on May 22, and she was runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Shirley ran well on May 26 at Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics. She ran 6.76 twice, with a best speed of 213, to reach the final against Bobby Rowe. There was no stopping Rowe this day as he won with an easy 6.68/193. She was back at Union Grove the next day, where she lasted until the semifinals before her 6.72/202 lost to eventual winner Al Marshall's 6.66/210. She was at Milan Dragway in June for the NHRA Division 3 race. In the opening round, her 7.35 beat Ed O'Brien, but in the semifinals, a 6.87/205 lost to Maas' 6.80/208. Shirley was at Atco on July 12 for its Funny Car Championships. Although she had lost to Leroy Chadderton in the first round, she came back out for a consolation race against Charlie Therwhanger. She won their race with a 6.93/225.00. It was a career-best speed for her (up to this point). She was back in Toronto on August 6 for a fourteen-car show. This time, Muldowney won, stopping Don Schumacher and Arnold along the way.

Notes: Muldowney had her new Satellite at OCIR in January for some shake-down runs. She never got in a good run as the car suffered from bad tire vibration. She had also attempted to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but the track was so bad that everyone was lost on getting the right set-up there. She was one of many that failed to make the field. Muldowney made history on June 10 at the NHRA Springnationals, when her first-round 6.841/209.79 beat Jim Murphy. It was her first funny car round win in NHRA competition. Shirley qualified #14 at 6.901/198.23, and she lost to Dave Beebe in round two, 6.89/215 to 7.67/146. She went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where she failed to qualify her funny car (first alternate - no times, but slower than 6.649) and Pancho Rendon's top fuel car (third alternate). | Shirley was one of many alternates at Indy with a best of 6.71/199.55. That was her last NHRA national event. She also ran 6.70 in Dallas.

Notes: Second fastest speed at Indy that year. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.34 at Columbus, 6.26 at Indy Shirley did not run at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but she was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, she failed to qualify. Muldowney skipped Bakersfield and failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. She was at Seattle in May for the Fifth Annual Northwest open, but with 21 cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car show she was one of thirteen that failed to get in. Muldowney was still learning with her Top Fuel car, but by the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus, she qualified for the field with a 6.34/224.42 (#14). A 6.47/215.31 in the first round, lost to Grant Stoms' 6.17/233. Shirley also qualified for the IHRA Northern Nationals at Mid-America Dragway and while she didn't win or even make the final, she did set Top Speed at 228.00. Shirley only skipped two NHRA Nationals events, the Summernationals and the Grandnationals. A 6.47 best at Martin, Mich., failed to qualify for the PHR Championships. She was not alone in failing to qualify for the sixteen-car field as 39 cars attempted and "names" like Gary Beck, Clayton Harris, Tommy Ivo, and others also failed to make the field. On August 19, Shirley was at New York National for the PRO National Challenge race. She qualified well for the 32-car show and in the first round, beat Larry Dixon's Chevy powered car. In the second round Muldowney ran a 6.09 (season best) to advance. She lost in the next round. Her next stop was Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.26/241.28 qualified #27 in the 32-car field. Bob Noice's 6.21 in the first round, beat her early shut off 6.56 at 177.51.

Notes: On June 15/1975, Shirley became the first woman to advance to the finals in Top Fuel, posting a runner-up to Marvin Graham at the NHRA Spring National in Columbus, Ohio. Two months later, on August 24 at the Popular Hot Rodding Championships in Martin, Michigan, she blasted a 5.98 second elapsed time to become the first woman to break the 5 second barrier. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. | Shirley started the year at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. She qualified #3 with a 6.24 and made it into round two before losing to James Warren. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.03/207.37 qualified #8. A first-round 6.33 at a shut off 191 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.20/235. Muldowney failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. She was at Cayuga in Canada for a match race against Tommy Ivo in early April. Unfortunately, she lost all three races with a best of only 7.67/179 on the cold track. Shirley went to St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.58/210.78 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.68/182.93 lost to Frank Bradley's 6.21/217. She had a great day at the Springnationals at National Trail on June 8. She qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 6.14/229.59 setting up a first-round race with low qualifier Rick Ramsey. In that race, Rick got out of shape and shut off to a 7.16/143 while Shirley motored to a 6.06/234.37 win. In round two, Paul Longenecker broke a blower belt and her 6.32 advanced. In the semifinals, she faced Don Garlits and her 6.26 beat a wheelstanding, early shut off run by Don. In the final, her competition was Marvin Graham. Muldowney tried hard, but her 6.36/230.76 finished runner-up to the 6.19/219 from Graham. At the second Olympia All Pro race at Seattle, Shirley qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.24/227.84. She got past the first-round to face Jerry "The King" Ruth in the semifinals. Ruth smoked the tires and Muldowney's 6.31/227.85 advanced into the finals. In the final, it was her turn to smoke the tires and her shut off 10.56 lost to Gaines Markley's 6.25. OCIR hosted the 32-car PDA Championships. A 6.26 qualified #11 for the show. In the first round, her fuel pump broke and her opponent Doug Aumack soloed for the win. As mentioned earlier, on August 24 at the PHR Championships at US 131, she ran her first "five." Her 5.98 qualified #3 in the show. A first-round 6.12/229.59 beat Austin Myer, but in round two she got a driving lesson from Gary Read as his 6.16/236 beat her quicker 6.12/230.17. She found herself in another NHRA final at Indianapolis for the US Nationals. She qualified #5 in the 32-car show with a 6.01/238.72. A first-round 5.99 beat Jim Bucher's 6.18. A 6.01/236.22 in round two beat Frank Holden's 6.16/240. She got past a big hurdle in round three when she beat low qualifier Gary Beck with a 6.00/232.55 over Beck's 6.23/197. In the semifinals, a 6.10 beat a tire smoking Terry Capp. In the final she ran Garlits.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. Shirley won the NHRA Springnationals. | Shirley started the '76 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where she qualified #3 with a 6.16. She beat Larry Dixon's 6.73 in the first round, with a 6.34, but in round two, Bob Struksnes' 6.43/224 beat her ailing 7.28/141.73. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, her 6.20/239.36 failed to qualify. On February 21, she was at OCIR's East vs. West meet. There were six cars there that made three runs each. In Muldowney's first race, her 6.14/199.11 beat Rick Ramsey who had a blower explode. In her second race, James Warren's 6.27/171 beat her 6.49/182. In the final race, she had problems and shut down to 10.50-61 in a loss to Larry Dixon's 6.26/233. Shirley ran at Famoso on March 7 for the Bakersfield March Meet, where her 6.34 qualified #27 in the 32-car field. Her first-round race affected the outcome of all the races that ran after hers. She lost her race against Jerry Ruth, and her motor let go and oiled down the lane. The track tried to "fix" it, but almost every winner after that came from the opposite lane. Not sure why, but Muldowney bypassed the NHRA Gatornationals. She was at Amarillo on May 2 for the IHRA World Nationals but lost a tire-smoking battle with Pat Dakin in the first round. Her 6.55 lost to Pat's 6.41. She competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 23 but failed to reach the finals. Then things began to click for Shirley. She went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, and everything went right. A 6.03/229.00 qualified #1, and a 6.07/228 beat Frank Holden in the first round. Paul Longenecker fell to her 6.03/240 in round two, and Ted Wolf driving the "Jade Grenade," lost to her 6.11 in the semifinals. In the final, she ran Bob Edwards, and she wrapped up the event with a 5.96/243.90 (Low ET and Top Speed) for her first NHRA National event title. It was an impressive outing. It was funny, though, when a week later, she went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified last in the sixteen-car field and lost in round one. The highs and lows of racing. Shirley did better on July 4 at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. She enjoyed beating Richard Tharp immensely (no love lost between these two) in the semifinals with a 6.12/235.60, but she lost to Don Garlits in the final. On July 17, she raced Garlits in a best of three match at Seattle, in which she was not too happy that the "old man" won. In August, Shirley was at US 131, Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 29 cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car show, and she qualified #13 with a 6.20. In the first round, her 6.31/215.31 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.10/213. At Indy for the US Nationals, Shirley ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.89 to qualify #5 in the 32-car field. She improved her best to a 5.86 at 241.85 in the first round, while beating Don Reed. In the second round, Tom Kaiser's 6.11/236 fell to the lady's 6.05/241.28. In round three, Gary Beck dropped her with a 5.79/245 to Shirley's 5.97/233.16. At the next NHRA event, the Fallnationals at Seattle, Muldowney showed up with a new Attebury built car. She made an easy check-out pass of 6.34/159 then got down to business. A 6.02/242.58 qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier James Warren. Shirley ran another 6.02 in that first-round race, but it wasn't enough as James took the win with a 5.89. Shirley ended the season by giving everyone a preview of what '77 was like. At Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, she qualified #1 with a 5.77/249.30 (Low ET and Top Speed). The speed was the fastest run in '76. Shirley ran 5.99, 5.87, and 5.84 over in order, Terry Capp, John Rodeck, and Dennis Baca to met "The King," Jerry Ruth in the final. Ruth was no slouch, running a best of 5.93 on the way to the finals. But this was Shirley's day, and she cracked off a 5.94 at a whopping 248.61 to take her second NHRA win.

Notes: Shirley started her '77 season at Irwindale for a best of three match race against James Warren. She won all three races and reset both ends of the track record to 5.86/243.24. She did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, but she was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.85/248.61. Unfortunately, Muldowney had a distributor clamp come loose in the first round, and it retarded the timing, forcing her to shut down against Rance McDaniel. Her next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Once again, she had problems and in round two a broken magneto cap put her out of the running against Don Garlits. Shirley's early-season woes continued at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.00 qualified #2, but she fouled against Clayton Harris. in the opening round. Things took a turn for the better in April. She won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis, and on May 5, Shirley went to OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race and won that too. She also set Top Speed of the meet at 253.52. Her next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was only an eight-car show, and she qualified #2. But in round one, she smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.85 in a loss to Marvin Graham. Everything went Muldowney's way at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. She set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.99/242.58. An opening round 6.12/234.37 beat Frank Bradley's 6.46/203. Jeg Coughlin crossed the centerline in round two, and she advanced with a 6.14/226.70. Garlits blew his engine in the semifinals trying to catch Shirley's 6.07/238.72. EnglishmanClive Skilton was her competition in the final and he was tough as he won his semifinal race with a 6.08. But Shirley ran a 6.11/236.22 to get the victory over Skilton's close 6.15/228. This seemed to be the turning point in her season, as the lady was tough to beat from then on. She won the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. Things didn't start out so well when she fouled away a 6.16 in the first round, but Coughlin crossed the centerline and the first or worse rule held up and she was reinstated. Shirley set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.04/240.64 over Pat Dakin. She then faced Gary Beck in the final, and his 6.26/213 was no match for her 6.06/240.64 (again). The trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals was eventful as her race car transporter caught fire. It had to be towed in. Once there, her performance was great. She ran 5.78 and 5.77/243.90 in qualifying. The 5.77 qualified #1 and was Low ET of the meet. Once again, she battled her way to the final. A first-round 6.11 got around a tire-smoking Skilton, and in round two, a 6.05/243 beat Dakin's 6.15. Her slowest run of the weekend, a 6.25/216 advanced in the semifinals when Richard Tharp got out of shape in the "Candies and Hughes" car. This put her into the final against Jeb Allen who always ran good at E-town. Not this time as his car broke, and Shirley picked up another victory with a 6.02/234.37. The following week (July 17), she won the PDA Championships at Seattle with a 6.12/241 (Top Speed). The second PDA race was held at Fremont and Shirley set a track record 5.82 at 240.64 (Top Speed) in qualifying #1. She failed to reach the finals, but she ran well. Muldowney made it three NHRA Nation event wins in a row when she won the Grandnationals in Canada. Once again, she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.93/240.00. She then ran 6.04 and 6.10 to beat Allen and Grant Stoms to reach the final. There she faced Dakin and he had problems and shut down to 7.14/137 while she motored to 5.95/234 for the win. Shirley was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. a week later. Of course, her 5.83/227.84 qualified #1, and again she worked her way to the final. A first-round 5.88/244.56 beat Ron Correnti, and a 5.93 took out Dick Rosberg in round two. Shirley was "up" for her semifinal race with Garlits, and her 5.81/246.57 (Low ET and Top Speed) put the "Old Man's" 5.94/242 on the trailer. She was expected to win in the final against John Abbott, who had only run a 6.28 best during eliminations, but he grabbed a holeshot off the line, and his 6.10/231 held on to beat her 6.03/233.75. Another win came at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend on August 21. She was the only five-second qualifier with a 5.92/243.70, and during eliminations, she set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.91/245.90. Shirley soloed in the final over a Larry Brown who had crashed in his semifinal win, but she still ran a strong 5.98/226.13. After running so well, the one race that had to bother her at the end of the year was the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. There were 60 cars attempting to qualify for the 32-car field and Muldowney qualified #2 with a 5.88. That was good, but in round one, against Dick LaHaie, her transmission wouldn't shift out of low gear, and her 6.36/161 lost to LaHaie's 6.19/221. That was bad, packing up after round one. More problems came at the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. Her 5.93 qualified #5 and a 6.17/229.59 beat Rob Bruins' 6.30/225 in round one, but in round two, she shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving McDaniel a solo into the semifinal. | I saw this world record speed run at OCIR on May 5, 1977. Shirley became the second Top Fuel driver to top 250 mph on the 253.52 and became the second entry into the NHRA 250 mph Club for Top Fuel. Also 5.78/252.10 at AHRA Winters at Beeline, AZ. Also, 5.77 at the 77 NHRA Summernationals, which Shirley won. - BP

Notes: After winning the NHRA Top Fuel World Championship in '77, Shirley hoped to return and have a repeat in '78. Her season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.975/246.57 qualified #6, and in round one, her 6.03/240.64 beat Larry Sutton. Unfortunately, a second-round 6.13/236.22 fell to eventual winner Kelly Brown's 6.06/239. After that, she went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. Muldowney ran 6.03 to qualify #2 in the sixteen-car field behind Don Garlits' 6.01. An opening round 6.33/238.09 covered Rance McDaniel's 6.49/198, and in round two, her 6.06/241.28 beat James Warren's 6.30/211. But in the semifinals, Shirley smoked the tires to a 6.68/177.86 loss to Rob Bruins. We are not sure when she ran 5.97/244.00 there, but she was credited with those times for Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet. Then came Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It wasn't good. During qualifying for the show on Friday, she had an electrical problem that kept her from making a run. All Saturday, they tried to get it fixed and failed to make a pass. After they finally thought they had it fixed, Shirley pulled up for a pass, but the engine blew shortly after leaving the line. The Gatornationals were over for her, and a 6.37 was the third alternate. She did not run at the Bakersfield March Meet or compete at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. But Shirley was at the NHRA Division 1 opener held at Englishtown on May 7. There she dominated the race. A 6.21/219.51 qualified #1, a 6.09 (Low ET) at 227.09 beat John Camamis' 6.60/219 in round one, and a 6.51/159.01 advanced in the semifinal when Larry Bucher broke. A final round 6.14/225.56 gave her the victory over Jerry Kowchefski's 6.77/183. She was runner-up Saturday to Paul Longenecker at the Drag Racing Olympics held at Union Grove. Her off-pace 6.52/168.53 lost to Paul's 6.06 in the final. She had earlier run a best of 6.13. Muldowney faced Graham Light in a best-of-three match race at Cayuga in June. She won all three races with times of 6.28/231.95, 6.17/235.60, and 6.18 at a track speed record of 237.46. Light's best run was 6.19/236. Shirley showed up at the NHRA Springnationals without former crew chief Connie Kalitta who had left three weeks previous. She qualified #13 with a 6.10/243.24. Kalitta had some satisfaction with outqualifying her (#8 at 6.02/242). In the opening round, her 6.15/238.72 lost to Brown's 6.10/233. Once again, Kelly would go on to win. By the time the NHRA Summernationals came around in July, Shirley really needed to get her season turned around. A 6.00/242.58 qualified #7, and in round one, her 6.08/234.95 beat Wayne Ernest's 6.64/224. In round two, Shirley's 6.03/240.00 beat Richard Tharp's 6.27/234 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. But despite running a strong 6.01/239.36 in the semifinal, she lost to Gary Beck's 5.97/247. The trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals was short. She qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.00/241.28 but lost to Light's 6.09/236 in the opening round with a 6.23/234.37. The following week, She was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 6.01 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. Muldowney ran 5.99/236.84 to beat Mark Howick in round one, but her 6.01/230.17 lost to the eventual winner Garlits' 5.93/240. Shirley ran really well during qualifying for Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Her 5.846/241.28 qualified #2 in the 32-car field behind Dave Uyehara. In the opening round of eliminations, Jerry Ruth's 6.26/227 fell to her 6.128/235.60. A very satisfying 5.976/240.64 beat Kalitta's 6.01/234 in round two. But in round three, Rob Bruin's 5.92/238 ended her run as she ran a losing 6.016/229.59. Shirley qualified #10 at Ontario at 5.960/243.90. She dropped a first-round decision to Dave Uyehara, 5.90/247 to 6.030/238.72. Shirley's best times were the 5.846 at Indy and 246.57 at the Winters.

Notes: Won 1980 NHRA Winston World Points Championship, becoming the first person in history to claim drag racing's most prestigious title twice. Finished number two in the AHRA championship. Won NHRA Winters; 5.830 was Low ET. | After winning the NHRA Top Fuel points championship in '77, Shirley had two poor seasons in '78 and '79. She also lost her sponsor going into the '80 season. At the season-opening AHRA Winternationals, she qualified last in the eight-car field and lasted until the semifinals, where she lost to eventual winner Frank Bradley. Things went much more her way at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.90/246.57 qualified #6 and Shirley went on to win the event by running 5.96/241.93 in the first round, over Mark Oswald, a Low ET of the meet shot of 5.830/249.30 (tied Top Speed) beat Dave Uyehara, and in the semifinals, she ran 5.84/240.61 to defeat John Kimble. In the final, she ran her old crew chief, Connie Kalitta. They had a good race, but Shirley's 5.94/247.25 beat Kalitta's 6.03/233. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Conrad got a bit of payback when the two met in the semifinals; his 5.83/226 beat her 5.98/243.24. She also set Top Speed of the Meet with a 247.25 pass. The NHRA Gatornationals did not go Muldowney's way as she ran 5.98 to qualify #7 and lasted until round two, where tire shake forced her to shut off against Richard Tharp. It was an unusual day at NHRA's Division 4 Points race at Houston where only three cars showed for TF. Even more unusual was that Shirley failed to make the final! She lost a close first-round race against Steve Stephens when both ran 6.08 with her speed being the tops of the meet at 238.72. She qualified #2 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.94/245.23 in the tough eight-car show. A 5.92/246 in the first round, beat Bradley, but in the semifinals, she was late off the line and her 5.92 lost to Gary Beck's 6.03. Muldowney always ran well at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals and 1980 was no different. A 5.98/242.58 qualified #5 and a 6.08 in round one, beat Bradley's 6.10. In round two, a holeshot 6.02/230 beat Kalitta's slightly quicker 6.00 and a 6.04/232 in the semifinals advanced when Don Garlits fouled away Low ET of the meet at 5.93. In the final, she bested Larry Brown with a 6.04/233.16 for her seventh NHRA National Event victory. On the AHRA trail, she was at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals in June. A 6.12/230 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but she was rudely upset by Fred Snavely in the first round. At the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, she failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Shirley got out of her mini-slump by winning the AHRA Nationals at San Antonio. She qualified #3 with a 5.97 then ran 5.97/246 in round one, and 6.02/245 to beat Garlits' 6.02/243 in the semifinals. In the final, Jody Smart fouled against her, and Shirley's 6.03/184 got the win. She then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where a 5.89/244.56 qualified #3. An opening round 5.92/235.60 beat Neil Mahr's 5.97/234, but in round two, her car broke three-quarters of the way down the track and she lost to Kalitta's tire-smoking 6.31. Late in July, Shirley was at Union Grove for the NHRA Division 3 race. A 5.96/231.95 qualified #1 for the eight-car field and she went on to win by stopping Chris Karamesines' 6.13 in the first round, with a 6.04. She set Low ET in the semifinal when her 5.90 beat Garlits' 5.99 and another 5.90 in the final beat Dick LaHaie’s 6.03. It was then off to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Shirley’s 5.99 qualified #2 behind Garlits' 5.91. The race had been interrupted by rain and her first-round opponent Kalitta decided not to stick around, so Muldowney got an easy first-round solo run. In the semifinals, she beat LaHaie. Rain again interrupted and the finals were postponed until Monday, but in the final Shirley ran Smart who had taken out Garlits in the semifinal. Shirley’s 6.03 got her the victory over Smart's 6.19. The next AHRA race was the Summernationals held at Kansas City. There was a big turnout of Top Fuel cars as eighteen attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Of course, Shirley easily qualified and it looked like she would pick up another win, but in her semifinal race against Smart, she hurt the motor on a 6.03/227.84 run and had to thrash to get it back together for the final against Garlits. Unfortunately, time ran out and Garlits singled for the win. The next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Shirley "only" qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 5.93. But that was as hard as she ran all weekend. A first-round 6.05/226.13 beat Wayne Ernest's 6.12 and in the semifinals, a 5.95/238.72 beat Jeb Allen's 6.34. Once again, it was a Garlits vs. Muldowney final and it couldn't have been any closer as Muldowney's holeshot 5.962/231.36 beat Garlits' slightly quicker 5.961/240.00 by inches. The best times for the season were 5.830/249.30 at Pomona.

Notes: Won 1981 AHRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, becoming the first and only woman to do so. Also won Bakersfield March Meet, becoming the first and only woman to do so. | Shirley started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals, where she qualified #5. In the first round, a 6.37/218 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.35/218. She then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 40 Top Fuel cars tried to get into the sixteen-car field. A 5.84 qualified #3 and a first-round 5.92/241 beat Frank Bradley (5.94/241). In the second round, a 600-foot wheelstand cost her the race against Marvin Graham. It was on to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet that, as mentioned above, she won. Shirley ran a 5.91/243.90 to qualify #3 again, and a first-round 5.96 beat her former partner Connie Kalitta in the first round. In round two, a 5.94/240.64 dispatched Mark Prudhomme's 6.19/213. In the semifinal, she met Jerry Ruth, and a 5.84 (Low ET) got her into the finals. A 5.92/245.90 (Top Speed) won the event over Doug Kerhulas. She backed that win up with another win a week later at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Shirley qualified #4 with a 5.76/247.93. A first-round 5.80/241.28 beat Mark Oswald and a second-round 5.74/250.00 beat Kalitta. In the semifinals, a 5.79/244.56 took out Dave Settles. In the final, she met strong competition in the form of Jody Smart. It was a good race, but Shirley's 5.81/247.25 prevailed over Smart's 5.89/245. On April 5, she ran at the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley, where a 6.03/225.56 qualified #1. She met Smart again in the first round, and a 6.10/222.77 beat his tire-smoking 6.38/233. Unfortunately, it was her turn to smoke the hides in the semifinal against Gene Snow. On April 26, she was running in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.83 qualified her #4 in the eight-car field. A 5.89/238.72 beat Kerhulas' 5.91/240 in the first round, and a 5.97/236 beat Jeb Allen's 6.00/241 in the semis. Another win came her way in the final when Muldowney's 5.95/239.36 beat Terry Capp's quicker 5.91/238. On May 3, she took another win at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. She qualified #3 and beat Don Garlits in the semifinal before beating Chris Karamesines in the final. Another win came on May 17 at Cayuga Dragway Park in Canada for an NHRA Eastern Regional. There, she set Top Speed at 239.36 before running a 6.21/231.36 in the final over Kerry Sweigart's 6.29/225. Shirley skipped over the following two NHRA events, not going to either the Cajun Nats or the Mile High meet in Denver. Early June found Shirley racing at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.10/236.85 qualified #2. A first-round 6.19/229.60 took care of Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car, and in the semifinal, a 6.24/234.99 beat Fred Snavely. In the final, she faced #1 qualifier Garlits. Garlits ran the track's first five in the final, a 5.99/237.47 to win over her 6.23/203. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.90/214.28 qualified #4. A first-round 5.92/243 beat Marvin Graham, but David Pace beat her in the semifinal with a 5.92. Shirley tried hard setting Top Speed at 244.56. She won the AHRA Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, setting Low ET at 5.84 in the final while beating Garlits. In July, at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the combination just wasn't there. She lost two engines in qualifying before making the field with a 5.86/238.72 (#11). She then wounded another engine in her first-round loss to Smart. At the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals, a 5.97/243.24 left her outside the eight-car field (#4 alternate). In August, Shirley competed at the AHRA Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway. She qualified #4 and beat Karamesines in the first round, with a 6.05/243. She got a free ride into the final when Joanne Reynolds broke. In the final, she met Ruth, who laid down a 5.90 (Low ET) at 236 to beat her 6.03/231. It was the same outcome at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Ruth stopped Muldowney again in the finals with a 5.74/238, beating her 5.89/202. Times were way low at this meet due to questionable clocks at Spokane. She had Top Speed at the US Nationals, qualifying #8 with a 5.74 and another 5.74 in the first round, beat Oswald (5.84), but she lost in the second round.

Notes: Shirley started the year at OCIR in Jan for a best-of-three-match race against Don Garlits and his new "sidewinder" car. She won the first race with a 6.04/218, but in the second race, she shut off to 6.58/136.77 while Don won with a 6.52/215. In the tiebreaker, Muldowney won the match with a 6.25/192. Garlits got some revenge at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He was using his "regular" car and qualified #1 with a 5.85, with Shirley a tenth behind at 5.95. Muldowney ran 6.05 and 6.03 to reach the final to run Garlits for the title. Don had run 5.94 and 5.79 to make the final, so he obviously had a performance advantage. Shirley knew this, and she pushed the "tree too hard and fouled in the final. Another runner-up finish came at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.73/243.24 qualified #3, and she repeated that number in the first round, with a speed of 244.56 to beat John Kimble. In the second round, her 5.76/243.90 took out Jerry Ruth's 6.00/234, and a semifinal 5.87/242.58 beat Jeb Allen. She faced Dick LaHaie in the final. Unfortunately, Shirley lost fire, and LaHaie soloed for the win. Shirley then went to Sacramento for its Winter Classic race, where she set a 5.79 track record. Her speed on the run was 241. A 5.78/245.23 qualified #6 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. She then beat Mark Niver in the opening round. That was followed by a 5.82/242.58 defeat of Jody Smart's 6.01/241 in round two. She then dropped Connie Kalitta in the semifinal with a 5.90/233.76. It was Garlits facing her in the final, and Shirley's 5.82/240.00 easily covered Don's 6.18/231 for the victory. Shirley won the 1982 WINSTON WORLD POINTS CHA/MPIONSHIP, becoming the first person in history to claim drag racing's most prestigious title three times. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.570. She also met Lucille Lee in the first all-female final round in NHRA history, with Muldowney taking the win, 5.711 seconds at 233.16 mph to Lee's 6.052 at 207.85. Shirley's 5.711 to 5.794 win over Mark Oswald at 1982 Northstars was the quickest side-by-side run in history at that point. The 5.570 to 5.669 over Connie Kalitta at Indy 1982 reset the quickest side-by-side mark.

Notes: After 19 months off due to her accident, Muldowney returned to the sport on January 19 at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. She made an obligatory half-track checkout pass of 7.22/124.30. She returned and ran 5.97/236.22 to qualify #7 in the eight-car field. A first-round 5.59/235.60 beat Larry Minor, but a valve keeper broke, and the supercharger lifted on the manifold and broke the studs. Crew chief Rahn Tobler called it a day, and they failed to repair the car for the semifinals, letting Minor back in on the "break rule." Shirley started the '86 NHRA season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.47/252.80. In the first round, she faced Don Garlits and "Big Daddy's" 5.59/264 beat her 5.71/218.97. On February 21, Shirley was a guest on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson. After the interview, she and Johnny raced golf carts in the back of the studio. Carson won their race. At the Gatornationals, Shirley only qualified #11, and in the first round, her 5.65/250.13 lost to Dan Pastorini's slower 5.73/251. She was in Atlanta in April for the Southern Nationals, where a 5.71/245.23 qualified #11. Shirley continued to have bad luck in the first round when Garlits' 5.53/261 beat her 5.65/251.81. Muldowney got past the first round at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. A 5.58/242.13 qualified #4, and a first-round 5.57/250.48 beat Pastorini's 5.62/250. But in the second round, while racing against Gene Snow, she lost a blower belt and the race with a slowing 5.99/172. At the Springnationals on June 15, Shirley would have been happy with a first-round loss, as her 5.85/248.61 left her outside of the field as the second alternate. The team had used up four crankshafts in trying to make the show. Shirley rebounded nicely by qualifying #4 at the Grandnationals in Canada with a 5.59/261.78. A first-round 5.52/261.32 got past an ailing Jimmy King, and in round two, a motor blowing 5.77/185.10 took out Hank Endres. With a new engine installed for her semifinal race with Dick LaHaie, Shirley left the line only to lose a blower on a 5.81/251.81 pass that lost to LaHaie's 5.61/249. At the World Finals, Shirley qualified #4 at 5.424/267.30 and ran as quick at 5.423/267.69, making it to the semifinals.

Notes: Shirley started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. She qualified #2 with a 5.56/254.81 (Top Speed) behind Larry Minor's 5.50. In the first round, she overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 7.27/113.92 in a loss to a motor-blowing Connie Kalitta. At Pomona, her 5.43/265.17 qualified #7 for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, she fell off to 5.89/201.61 and lost to Bill Mullins' 5.82/233. The next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Shirley qualified #13 with a 5.54/256.26. In the first round, she improved to 5.49/271.16 while beating Don Garlits. A second-round 5.58/263.15 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.26/267. She did not race at the NHRA Winston All-Star race on the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, but she was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where a 5.53/257.43 qualified #7. She beat Earl Whiting in the first round, with a 5.51/260.11. Shirley lost to a quick-leaving Eddie Hill in round where her 5.58/260.41 lost to Hill's 5.61/264. She was at the Texas Motorplex on June 6 for a four-car show. The cars each made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Muldowney's first-round 5.81/204.82 beat Ray Stutz, and she ran a career-best 5.34 (to this point) at 268.97 on a solo when Hill broke. The ET qualified her for the final, where she faced Gary Ormsby, who had run a 5.37 best. They had a close race, but Shirley's 5.38 edged Gary's 5.39 for the win. It wasn't a national event, but a win, but it was a win, and the team needed this. Columbus was the next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. She always ran well at National Trail. A 5.45/261.55 qualified #3, and a 5.49/265.17 beat Hill in the first round. But in the second round, she smoked the tires and shut off to 7.75/118.28 in a loss to Gwynn's 5.48/252. She followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There Shirley qualified #11 with a 5.78/265.72, but in the first round, her 5.85/211.26 lost to Ormsby's 5.77/260. At the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.40/268.49 qualified #6. A first-round 5.50/260.71 lost to Kalitta's 5.52/257. She skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals but was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, where Shirley's 5.49/268.97 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Ormsby. Shirley was up to it running a 5.43/267.61 to beat Ormsby, who smoked the tires to a 5.64/259 loss. In the second round, her 5.38/270.43 beat Frank Bradley's 5.44/259. For the first time in '87, Shirley was in the semifinals of a major event. Unfortunately, her 5.44/259.06 lost to eventual winner Gwynn's 5.39/264. | Cool pink moon discs on back slicks. | I have a very nice story involving Raymond Beadle. It was 1987. We were running Shirley's PAW car at the Texas Motorplex and running a canopy at that time. We ran 284.27 mph on a qualifying run. Split the canopy in half in the lights. No spare. Beadle hands me the keys to his fab shop on Fabens Road. He says, "John. The heck with that canopy. Just go make a regular (Al Swindahl type) windshield at my shop tonight! But just don't leave a big mess, cuz Emery will blow a head gasket!" So, that's what I did. On the next run, the car ran 284.90! - John Muldowney, 10/21/14, the day after Raymond Beadle died. | NOTE: Upon reviewing the qualifying and elimination sheets, Shirley actually ran 5.177/280.63 but then ran 5.275/284.27 in a first-round win over Connie Kalitta. So, the numbers were off a bit, but John's story holds true with the improved speed after removing the canopy. - BP

Notes: The eighth member of the Cragar Four-Second Club for Top Fuel with this national record run on September 15, 1989. Shirley took part in the quickest side-by-side run in history with Joe Amato at 89 Keystones, 4.967 (Joe) to 4.975 (Shirley). Photo (far lane) from 1989 US Nationals IRP vs. Lori Johns (near Lane). What can you say about Shirley Muldowney? She was amazing. Despite her accidents in the sport, she always returned. Shirley loved drag racing. She ran well in '89, finishing in ninth in the season-long NHRA points chase. She only got one win, but she was consistent throughout the year. | The season started at Pomona for the Winternationals, where she ran a 5.15/274.22 to qualify #10. An improved 5.13/275.73 was not enough in round one, and she lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.07/277. At Houston for the Supernationals, a best-ever (to this point) 5.07 qualified #8. In the first round, she ran alternate, Lori Johns. Shirley smoked the tires, and Johns went on to a 5.16 win. The Gatornationals was the next event on the schedule, and Shirley qualified #12 with a 5.20, setting up a first-round race with former boyfriend and crew chief Connie Kalitta. Announcers were always quick to point that out. In their race, Kalitta broke, and Shirley moved on with a 5.49. She lost to Eddie Hill in the second round. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, she just made the show with her 5.29/266.74 qualifying on the bump. A first-round 5.28/261.39 was no match for Joe Amato's 5.15/270. She was a no-show at the next few events before she showed up in Canada for the Grandnationals. Unfortunately, a best of 5.45/250.69 was good for the first alternate. Shirley did make the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.25/276.75 qualified on the bump. She lost to Frank Cook in round one. At the Mile High Nationals, she again lost in the first round, this time to Amato. She qualified #10 with a 5.41/263.38 in the thin Denver air. At the eleventh race of the season, the California Nationals, Shirley ran a 5.12/285.17 to qualify in the top half of the field (#7). But for the third straight race, she was gone after the first-round. Gordie Bonin's 5.15 sent her packing this time. At Seattle for the Seafair Nationals, she qualified #7 with a 5.12/287.72. A first-round 5.16/283.10 beat Gary Beck in the McGee car. But in the second round, Ormsby's 5.11/280 beat her game 5.14/282.22. She ran really well at the Northstar Nationals, qualifying #4 with a 5.18/276.60. Cook fouled against her in the first round, but she legged it through with a 5.19/280.02 anyway. Both she and Hill smoked the tires in the second round, and her 5.62/268.41 beat Eddie's 5.80/262.92. In the semifinals, Shirley and opponent Kalitta ran 5.16's at 277, but the lady got the win light. In the final, she lost to Amato. Shirley tried hard to qualify at Indy for the US Nationals, but it wasn't to be. Her best of 5.17/281.95 was the fourth alternate. She sure made up for her non-qualifier at the next event, the Keystone Nationals, where she used a 4.97/284.99 to take the pole. In the first round, she beat Gene Snow with a 5.00/286.16. Then Shirley and Amato had the quickest ever side by side race, with Joe's 4.96/290 nipping her 4.97/287.81. At the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, Muldowney qualified #5 with a 4.98/289.66. She ran a shut-off 11.11 in the first round, when Rudy Toepke broke. In round two, she lost to Ormsby. Shirley got her lone win of the season at the next event, the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. She qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.04 (Top Speed). In the second round, a 5.15/279 beat Snow's 5.16, and in the semifinals, a holeshot 5.16/269 beat Amato's quicker 5.14. In the final, she met Darrell Gwynn, and once again, she outdrove the boys with her 5.05/275.48 getting the win over Darrell's slightly quicker 5.04/278. | Shirley and Tobler were also Top Speed at Seattle in '89 at 287.72. - Joe Moore

Notes: Shirley linked up with Larry Minor this year. Muldowney started her season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. She qualified #12 with a 5.13/281.16. In the first round, she improved to 5.09/270.27 to beat Frank Bradley's better 5.07/276. But in the second round, she smoked the tires and shut down to 12.46/80.60 in a loss to Gary Ormsby's 5.05/279. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a great 4.97/269.54 qualified #3. Kenny Bernstein's 5.11/270 in the opening round fell to Muldowney's 5.05/262.31. In round two, her 5.01/277.77 stopped Darrell Gwynn's 5.11/270. She faced Ormsby in the semi-final, and the car went into a wheelstand, and she ended up crossing the centerline and was disqualified. Things didn't go so well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Her 5.01/281.16 qualified #7, but a tire-smoking 6.59/207.13 in the first round lost to Tommy Johnson Jr's 6.01/267. The NHRA Gatornationals went even worse, as she finished as the first alternate at 5.25/267.45. Early in April, Shirley was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and her 5.12/275.81 qualified on the "bump." Once again, tire smoke did her in as a 15.98/49.92 shut-off run in round one lost to Gwynn's 5.04/278. More problems followed the team to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. She qualified #13 at 5.13/278.66, but a troubled 8.55/98.46 fell to Bradley's 5.09/273 in the first round. Bradley got her again in the first round at Memphis, where she lost a motor. Shirley qualified #10 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.16. She got past the first round at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.22/271.24 qualified #11. A quick-leaving 5.31/271 got some "revenge" on Bradley's quicker 5.27 in the first round, but she lost to Mike Brotherton in round two. She had another so-so run at Columbus, where her 5.24/267.30 "only" qualified #14 for the NHRA Springnationals. She upset Eddie Hill in the first round with a 5.26/268.89 before losing to Dick Lahaie's 5.19/270 in round two with an up-in-smoke 6.63/138.46. The next stop was the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.20/270.27 qualified #6. Shirley took out Paul Smith in round one with a 5.24, but another 5.24 in round two, lost to Frank Hawley's 5.11. Shirley was used to running much better than this, and, to add to her problems, the transporter was vandalized in the pits at Englishtown during the NHRA Summernationals. She had qualified #8 with a 5.07/264.78 and lost to Bernstein in the first round. NHRA's next event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Muldowney qualified #7 at 5.42/228.19, but her 5.66/249.72 lost to Bradley's 5.56/253 in round one. Her best ET of 4.975 was at NHRA Phoenix. Shirley ran her best speed of 281.16 at both the Winters and Houston. We formerly listed 298 for Shirley this year. Can anyone provide information on when she ran 298?

Notes: The 303.71 was the IHRA record at the end of 1997. Placed third in IHRA National Championship Points. | Shirley ran well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. She qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 4.97/302.08. The speed was a new IHRA record. A first-round 4.99/300.06 beat Jim Bailey's 5.08/276, but she fell off to 5.15/294.18 in the semifinal and lost to Doug Herbert's 5.02/298. Shirley ran one NHRA national event in 1997, the 12th Annual Revell Nationals at Ennis, Texas. She did not qualify with a 4.882/287.35 (third alternate behind Tony Schumacher and Shelly Anderson).
