Notes: Mullins' little Chevy powered alcohol dragster gave the KB and Donovan powered cars a hard time in '81. Some of the highlights of his season included a runner-up finish to Joe Amato at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Atlanta on March 8. He qualified #2 behind Joe with a 6.77/201.34. A first-round 6.72/201.79 beat Tom Finlay while in the semifinals, he sent Bogie Kell home with another 6.72 at 203.61. It was a close final, but Amato's 6.71/202 beat Bill's 6.73/204.54. A week later (March 15), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.65/206.89 qualified #6 in the field. Mullins ran a first-round solo of 7.23/153.84 when Kevin Geiger failed to show, but he had mechanical issues and he was unable to make the second round call giving Chet Rickard a solo into the semifinals. More problems arose at State Capitol Dragway on March 22. He qualified #5 for the show with a 6.94/185.56, but he broke in the first round, against eventual winner Willard Buff. He made up for it by winning the NHRA Division 2 race at Warner Robins on March 29. There he set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.02/201.34 before beating Kell in the final with a 7.11/199.11. Bill was back at State Capitol Dragway on May 17 for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.74 for the eight-car show. He really picked up in round one, with a 6.62 (Low ET) at 207.37 to beat Darrell Gwynn's 6.71/206. In the semifinals, his 6.71/204.54 beat Eddie Baumann and moved him into the final where he would face Amato. It was another good close race between the two, but Mullins' 6.67/206.89 beat Joe's 6.70/205 for the title. It was interesting to know that Bill was using a homemade injector built by his crew chief, Tony Garcia. He was at Blaney on June 6 for the NHRA Division 2 race. Bill set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.89/201.34, but in the first round, he shut down to a 7.15/188.66 due to tire shake and he lost to Gwynn.

Notes: Mullins ran strong in '85. He started the year by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.57/263.00. A first-round 5.91/214.79 got around Frank Bradley, but in round two he lost a motor and the race to Larry Minor. At the Gatornationals, he continued to run strong. A 5.66/255.10 qualified #7. He beat Hank Endres in the first round, with a 5.68/256.41. In round two he upset Don Garlits with a 5.67 over Garlits' 5.68. Unfortunately, facing Joe Amato in the semifinals, he fouled. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. It was an eight-car show and Bill qualified #4 with a 5.64/249.03. He lost to Gene Snow in the first round. The Cajun Nationals featured another eight-car show. Qualifying was tough as Mullins blew an engine trying to make the show. Another engine was put in and he qualified. He beat Gary Beck in the first round, with a 5.74/249 and in the semifinals, a 5.67/254 beat Darrell Gwynn. In the final, he faced Garlits and Don claimed his 25th NHRA win to beat Mullins. It was still a very good showing for the team. He finished one spot higher at the next NHRA event, the Springnationals at Columbus. He qualified #4 with a 5.61/252.95 and beat Dan Pastorini in the first round. He got revenge on Garlits in round two when he beat him with a 5.69/252 over Don's off pace 5.95. Bill out drove LaHaie in the semifinals with Bill's 5.71/258.02 (Top Speed) beating Dick's quicker 5.66/251. In the final he faced Beck. Mullins ran a 5.62/257.58 to take the win over Gary's 5.71/245. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnationals at Sanair International at the end of June. Once again it was an eight-car show. Mullins qualified #3 with a 5.58/257.87. He ran Garlits in the first round, and fouled against him. Mullins really stepped it up at the Summernationals at Englishtown. He ran a 5.477/257.14 to qualify #3. John Carey car was former Jody Smart machine

Mullins started the year by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway in January He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.67/247.93. A 5.95/245.90 beat alternate John Davisson in the first round, and a holeshot aided 5.79/255.68 beat Connie Kalitta's 5.77/242 in the semifinals. In the final, he used another holeshot to beat Larry Minor. His 5.70/257.14 was enough to take the victory over Minor's 5.63/243. Bill attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but a best of 5.77/255.68 left him as first alternate. He did make the show at the Gatornationals, but lost to Chris Karamesines in the first round. In April, he was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he qualified #14 with a 5.77/253.23. He upset Darrell Gwynn in the first round, with a 5.73/252.38 and in round two, a 5.77/250.69 beat a tire smoking Gary Beck. Notes: Bill was at the Texas Motorplex in April for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 5.36/273 qualified #13, and in the first round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.32 at 269. Unfortunately, it came on the end of a losing run to Frank Hawley's 5.22/269. On May 15, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.46 qualified #15, and he lost to Gary Ormsby in the opening round of competition. The following week (May 22), Mullins was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. It was an unusual twelve-car field, and he qualified #7. Once again, he lost in the opening round. The Ennis times were Bill's best of 1988 for either IHRA or NHRA.
