Notes: Right out of the gate, this dragster looked to be something special. It made a good showing at the U.S. Nationals in 1958 at Oklahoma City. In its first outing in '59 at Santa Ana, it clocked 163.63 mph in 9.61, its fastest run of the season. On Feb. 15 at Santa Ana, Nelson took Top Eliminator. On Mar. 8 at San Gabriel, Nelson took Top Eliminator and set track records with 9.70 and 149.25 mph. On Apr. 5 at San Gabriel, it set a strip speed record with 155.97 mph. In early July at Santa Ana, Nelson was seriously injured when he crashed. While he recovered, Dode Martin took over driving duties. He had driven a time or two before, but Nelson had been the primary driver before the crash. At Oklahoma City in August, Martin won top gas eliminator at the Mar-Car 1,000-Foot Invitational, winning a $500 savings bond. Dode drove at the Detroit National Championships, setting a national time mark at 9.03. The success of this original Dragmaster dragster brought success to Martin and Nelson as other racers wanted these well-built chassis. They began building them for the growing drag racing community.
