Notes: Nicholson was at Detroit Dragway on June 22 for a best of five match race against the "Golden Commando" Plymouth, driven by Bill Shirley. Don's 409 wasn't up to the challenge of the Mopar. He made a time trial run at 116.27, but Shirley made one at 3 miles an hour faster. In the first race, Don's 12.82 lost to Bill's 12.17. Nicholson got off the line first in the second race, but Bill drove around him to win with a 12.37 to Don's 12.57. He also lost the third race to give the match to the Mopar. Nicholson came back out later for another run and ran 12.38/116.12. |

Notes: Ford and Mercury contracted Dearborn Steel Tubing to build 11 A/FX Comets for the 1964 season: 10 hardtop coupes and one four-door wagon. Nicholson started the season with the wagon and drove it until April, when his coupe was finished. All these lightweights were T-10 4-speed cars. - RT | At Cecil County, Nicholson ran a 10.75/127.65, beating a 10.99 Bud Faubel challenge. These times were gas and carbs at 3200 pounds. |

Notes: Known as "The Ugly Duckling," the un-sexy 4-door wagon was a practical attempt to improve traction by getting more static weight over the rear tires. Of 11 '64 Comets modified for the factory by Dearborn Steel Tubing, all were hardtop coupes except this wagon. With it Nicholson set Low ET of 11.44 in a large field of A/FXers at '64 Winternationals. After a successful stint with the car Nicholson received a hardtop coupe. The grocery getter was handed off to Ed Schartman in April. The 7/10-64 National Dragster has pictures of this car, unlettered, running under a new non-Nicholson-affiliated sponsorship, driver in Honolulu, Hawaii in July '64, but photos elsewhere show Schartman driving this car at the '64 Nationals at Indy. The Comet wagon was built on a Falcon wheelbase of 109 inches - five inches shorter than the coupe and sedan. It weighed 3280 pounds with rear-mounted battery and fiberglass front body panels. Before Spring, Don had this wagon down to an 11.12. |

Notes: One of four factory '65 Comets equipped with the 427 Cammer. Others went to Arnie Beswick, Hayden Proffitt, and George DeLorean. It started with a stock wheelbase, but Nicholson eventually converted to AWB configuration to remain competitive with the funny "match race" Mopars. It started with gas but quickly progressed to fuel as the environment evolved from legal A/FX to "run whatcha brung" match races. Nicholson tried various induction systems during the season: two four-barrel Holleys, four two-barrel Webers, and finally Hilborn injection. Ran first unblown 150 at Capitol Raceway. This car was sold to Pete Gates in 1966. When Nicholson crashed his flip-top "Eliminator I" Comet later in the year, he temporarily borrowed the '65 car back from Gates. (Gates won the first Super Stock Nationals with this "obsolete" racecar.) Eventually, it was sold to Fred Gendian, who ran the car in 1967/68. | Don Nicholson had an amazing season in '64 with his 427 Comet. He won 71 out of 76 match races and was part of why Chrysler debuted its altered wheelbase funny cars in '65. Don ran almost the entire '65 season without the altered wheelbase, and he more than held his own against the Mopars. It wasn’t until late in the season that the Comet's wheelbase was altered. Notes: When the Ford Motor Company commissioned Logghe Stamping Company to build four Mercury Comets, drag racing would change forever. The four Comets, raced by Don Nicholson, Ed Schartman, Jack Chrisman, and Kenz & Leslie, were far ahead of the competition in technology. They were even ahead of fellow FoMoCo racers who were racing Holman-Moody Mustangs. The three had everybody else catching up to them in 1966. The best-known of these four funny cars was Don Nicholson's "Eliminator I." The Comet's debut was less than graceful when the body came unlatched and flew off. Ford engineers burned the damaged body on the spot. The car was fixed, and the "Eliminator I" went on a tear. In 1966, Nicholson held off the heavier stock-bodied cars despite using an injected engine. A several hundred-pound weight advantage helped, but having Earl Wade tuning for him did not hurt. This was the first funny car into the 7-second zone with a 7.96/169 at Martin (info from Dennis Doubleday and Bill Duke). Additional note: This was the first Nicholson race car with an automatic (C-6 Ford). He preferred a stick, but period accounts report the centrally located driver's seat made it physically impractical to mount a manual shifter on the tunnel. | Classified S/XS due to extreme lightweight, despite not being supercharged. | This was the future of funny car racing. | As mentioned above, the tube-framed Comet debuted at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals. When the car made a run, the wind pushed against the body, and the latch holding it in place released. The body came loose at 159 mph and flew into the air. Don was OK, if not a little bit embarrassed. Good things were soon to come. The Comet returned to competition with the latch reversed and soon changed the face of Funny Car racing forever. On April 3, he faced Ronnie Sox for a best three out of five match at Cecil County. Don won the first race with a 9.50/155.97 over Sox's 9.62/148. Sox returned to win the second race with a 9.18/153 over "Dyno's" missed shift 13.84/47.36. Don ran his first-ever "eight" as his 8.94/157.61 beat Sox in the third race. To wrap things up, a track record 8.77/160.42 won the fourth race over a fouling Sox. On April 23, he beat Cecil Yother three straight at Lassiter Raceway. The mph clocks were out, but Nicholson's times were 8.60, 8.82, and 8.91. He ran at Cecil County again on May 7. Once again, Don took the win. He won two straight with runs of 8.65/166.66 and 8.67/166.06. A week later (May 14), he was at Cordova for a best-of-three match against Arnie Beswick's Pontiac. Don won the first round when he limped through with a broken transmission. Arnie pulled a wheelstand and busted his oil pan. Don's 8.85/149.25 beat Beswick, who again stood it up on two wheels in the second race. Just for good measure, Don won the third race with an 8.81 when Arnie broke a trans. On May 21, he faced the "Mr. Norm" Dodge driven by Ron O'Donnell at US 131 Martin, Michigan. Don won two straight when O'Donnell fouled in the first race, and in the second race, "Dyno's" 8.78/164 won when Ron shut off. The next day (May 22), he faced Doug Thorley's Nova at the same track (US 131). Don again won two straight with an 8.99/159 best. Nicholson went to Union Grove on May 27 for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. He won easily, running 8.85 at 163 to take the win. Beswick got a rematch at Detroit on June 11. Once again, the Comet was too strong, winning three straight with times of 8.61/165.13, 8.62/165.13, and a solo of 8.57/166.66. Sox also got a rematch. It was a best-of-five at Aquasco on June 26. It did not go well for Sox as "Dyno" won three straight. Ronnie was running a full second slower than the Comet. The first race saw Don's 8.58/163.63 beat Sox at 9.42. The second race had Don set an 8.37 track record at 163.63 over Sox's 9.53/117, and Don reset the track record in the third race with an 8.35/166.97 over Ronnie's 9.66/148. Kinston was "Dyno's" next stop on July 10 for a best-of-three match against Don Gay. The Pontiac's transmission gave out in their first race, and Nicholson won with an 8.96. Gay replaced the transmission, and the two were set for their second race. Gay got a big jump on Nicholson, and it looked like he would win, but the Comet shot past just before the lights to win with an 8.85 over Gay's 9.01. The car was pretty much unbeatable in match races. Dick Landy gave it a try on July 16 at US 131 in a best two out of three. Don set an 8.56 track record at 150 in the first race when Landy shut off with a blown water hose. In the second race, Dick fouled, and Nicholson won with an 8.78/161. In the third race, Don made it three in a row with an 8.68/165, beating Landy's 8.94/154. On July 30, Don took a loss when he blew a transmission in the final against Mike Buckel in the "Ramchargers" Dart at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine Super Stock International. On August 13, Don reset the funny car world record at Motor City at 8.16/174 (Bret Kepner). On August 14, Don faced off against Maynard Rupp's "Chevoom," a Hemi-powered Chevelle. It was a best of three at National Trail. Don once again won three straight, but the competition was getting closer. In the first round, the Comet's 8.41/168.42 beat Rupp's 8.83/150. The second race saw Don's 8.47/170.70 beat the Chevelle's 8.74/163. And in the final race, "Dyno" set an 8.29 track record at 170.12 over Rupp's 8.70/164. Landy got another shot at Nicholson at Alton on August 20. Don won three straight, running times a half-second quicker than Landy's Dart. Don ran 8.56/159.01 and 8.53/171.75 against Dick's best of 8.97/146 and then ran 8.42/156.52 to win the match. Then the two met again at Gary, Indiana's US 30 the next day (August 21). Dick even managed to win the first race with an 8.83/166, beating Nicholson's out-of-shape 8.87/166.64. But Don returned to win the next two races and the match, running 8.65/169.19 and a track record 8.43/176.40. At the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis, Nicholson ran 8.41 and 8.31 in time trials. He lost to Ed Schartman in the final for the S/XS class. Gay was Don's next victim. The two met up at Cecil County on September 10 for a best-of-three match. "Dyno" won the first race with an 8.28, but he lost the second when the Comet broke a rear end. He returned to win the third race and the match with an 8.33/169.59. On September 17, history was made when Don beat teammate Schartman in a best of three at US 131. Nicholson ran a 7.96/169.10 while winning the match. It was the first seven-second run for a stock-bodied automobile. A week later, Don was at Capitol facing off with Landy again. The times were getting closer. Don won the first race with an 8.48/172.74 to Landy's 9.05/163. The second race and the match race win went to Nicholson when he beat Landy's 8.82/170 with an 8.70/152.02. Don blew a head gasket on this run and could not run the third race. Dick ran a solo pass of 8.55/172. Nicholson got beat in a match race on October 8 at Green Valley by Don Gay. Nicholson won the first race when Gay crossed the centerline, but "Dyno" broke a throttle cable in the second race, and Gay took the win. In the last race, Gay put a holeshot on the Comet that even a track record 8.68 failed to beat. On October 9, Don faced a newcomer to the Funny Car ranks, Larry Reyes, in a funny-looking Barracuda called the "Kingfish" with a blown fuel-burning Hemi. The two locked horns at Wichita, Texas, for a best two out of three match. Don won two straight with a best of 8.59/164, while Reyes' best was 8.95. Shortly after that, "Dyno" went to Virginia Beach for a match race against Sox. Nicholson won two straight with reported times of 7.92 and 7.94. Gay and Nicholson had a rematch at Houston on October 22. This time "Dyno" won two straight, running a track record 8.55/168.81. | Don's 8.35 at Aquasco equaled Arnie Beswick's 8.35 from March 1966. - Bret Kepner, 7/23 |

Notes: After a year of fine-tuning the Comet, the '67 version pretty much owned the class except for Ed Schartman's late-season run in a similar Comet. The new '67 car was 50 pounds lighter than the '66, and the engine was moved back five inches in the chassis. The body also sat lower on the frame. The Comet retained its 116" wheelbase. Don started the season by qualifying #1 with an 8.42/169.70 (Low ET and Top Speed) at the Irwindale New Year's Funny Car race on January 2. He ran strong, hitting an 8.43/168.22 in the semifinal while beating Charlie Allen's Dart. In the final, he polished off Hayden Proffitt's 8.79/158 Corvair effort with an 8.47 at an early shut-off 140.13. This was just the first of many wins for the year. Eight spots were available at the Fontana Funny Car show on January 7, and 42 cars fought to get into the show. Once again, the "Eliminator II" Comet qualified #1. This time an 8.01 (Low ET) got the spot. He beat Al Vanderwoude's out-of-shape Dart in the first round, with an 8.43/130.43, and in the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.26/147.54 when Dick Loehr's Mustang fired to fire. In the final, he whupped Ray Alley's 8.52/178 'Cuda effort with an 8.08/172.41. Then came another victory on January 29 at the AHRA Winternationals. He was running in the "unlimited" Funny Car class. "Dyno" ran 8.32/170 in the first round, and an 8.35/172.08 (Top Speed) in the semifinals over Don Gay. In the final, it was the two Logghe-built Comets of Nicholson and Schartman. Don took the win with an 8.26 (Low ET) at 171.75 over Eddie's 8.48/169. A week later (February 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Twelve cars ran in the S/XS class. Don beat teammate Jack Chrisman in the first round, with an 8.42/170.77. In round two, he faced Larry Reyes, and once again, the Comet came out on top, beating Reyes' 8.68/172 with an 8.54/170.77. He beat Gene Ciambella's Jeep in the semifinals with an 8.63/172.41. This put him in the final against Roger Wolford in yet another Jeep. "Dyno" got the victory with an 8.56/170.45. He then ran in the Super Eliminator class and lasted until the semifinals before losing to Hugh Tucker. Nicholson won the Bakersfield meet on February 19, beating Ron Runyan's "Blue Hell" Corvette in the final with an 8.21/172.09 (Low ET and Top Speed). He was running a lot of match races between meets and doing well. He beat "Mr. Norm" two straight at Green Valley early in March with two 8.2 runs. On March 26, he was at Paradise Drag Strip and was forced to use his '66 car since his '67 Comet had been damaged. It was a 1,000-foot track, and even with the old car, he beat Arnie Beswick two straight. To be fair, Arnie had problems, a broken fuel tank, and a blown rear end, but "Dyno" ran a hard-to-beat 6.38 in his first race solo run. After the first two races, it was discovered that Don broke a valve spring, so Beswick soloed to a third race win with a 6.89. On April 2, he faced Don Gay at Aquasco in a best two out of three match race. Don won two straight, running 8.53/160.00 and 8.39/167.91. A week later (April 9), he was at Cecil County running Dave Strickler. The track record going into the match race was an 8.37 held by Nicholson himself. In the first race, an 8.27/166.97 beat a fouling Strickler. In the second race, Don reset the track record to an 8.17/172.08 over the Corvette's 8.83/161. For the final race, the track officials gave Strickler a half-second handicap. Dave ran his best time ever (to this point), an 8.73/162 to beat the Comet's 8.24/166.05. Nicholson still won the match. Tommy Grove cut his own throat on April 30 when Nicholson pulled into Greensboro for their match race with a blown transmission. Grove loaned Don a transmission, and Nicholson beat Tommy's Mustang two straight with runs of 7.12/151 and 7.05 on the 1/8 mile track. The 7.05 and the 151 were new track records. On May 10, Don lost a car at Cecil County's Factory Showdown. He beat Jim Osteen driving Don Gay's GTO in the first round, with an 8.34/171. The "Ramchargers" Dart failed to fire in the second round, so Don got a solo. The solo pass didn't go so well as the car became airborne near the end of the run, and the body ripped off. Don and the chassis ended up in a marsh that ran along the shutdown area of the track. He was OK, but the Comet was not. The first thing he asked the rescue workers was, "what did I run?" He had run an 8.04 for Low ET of the meet. He was out of commission for a while repairing the car, but he was running strong again by June. "Dyno" was in Detroit for a match against the "Ramchargers." Jim Thornton was driving the Dodge, and Nicholson ran 8.35/148.51 and 8.20/165.74 to win two straight. At Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals, Don set Low ET in qualifying with an 8.237/165.74. But he had a little snooze on the line in the opening round, and his 8.36/166.97 lost to eventual winner Grove's 8.440/169.17. A week later (June 17), he was at York US 30 for a big race. Unfortunately, he fouled against Dick Jesse in the first round. On June 28, Atco hosted the Drag News Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and the Comets of Schartman and Nicholson would end up in the final together. "Dyno" opened eliminations with an 8.33/148.76 over Gay's wheelstanding GTO and a semifinal 8.11/172 beat Bruce Larson. Eddie ran 8.28 and 8.48 to reach the final. In their race, Don set Low ET with a track record 8.03 at 172.41 (Top Speed) to win over Ed's 8.27/166. He started the month of July by winning over an eight-car car at Martin, Michigan, on the 1st. An 8.15 (Low ET) at 174.75 beat the "Ramchargers'" 8.37/176 in the first round, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Liberman. He was supposed to run Roger Lindamood in the final, but the final was never run due to rain. "Dyno" was declared the winner based on his times. On July 7, he was at Lakeland, where he ran 7.99/178. Cecil County hosted four FCs on July 22. In his first race, Don ran 8.16/174.41 to beat Thornton's out-of-shape pass in the "Ramchargers" car that knocked out the speed clocks. In his next race, Nicholson gated Lindamood and beat him with an 8.18/171.10 to Roger's 8.15/176. Nicholson could not run his third race against Schartman as his bearings were burnt. Eddie could not run either as he had bent his front axle during a wheelstanding run earlier. Early in September, he was at Muncie for a UDRA race. He was upset in the first round, when "Dyno's" 8.20/170.13 lost to Pat Minick's 8.03/182." Dyno" won the Factory Showdown held at Covington on October 1. He beat Cecil Yother and Lindamood to reach the final against Phil Bonner. Don set Low ET in the final while winning with a 6.84. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Experimental Stock Invitational race. He was late off the line in the opening round and lost to Grove. The times of these FC's kept dropping, and by the end of the year, you had to be running in the "sevens" if you wanted to win. Early in November, Lions held its East-West Championships. Nicholson by now had been forced to run a supercharger to stay competitive. In round one, he ran 8.30 to defeat "Jungle Jim" Liberman. A much better 7.92/179.28 beat Butch Leal's 8.05/177 in a good race. He faced Grove's Mustang in the final, and the two "Cammer" powered cars shot down the track with Nicholson's 7.97/174.08 getting the victory over Grove's 8.10/167. C-6 auto trans. Ran 8.17/181.08 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Don also reportedly ran 7.89/178. We need confirmation. |

Notes: SOHC Ford, C-6 auto trans. Ran 7.35 at Detroit Dragway vs. Walt Knoch. Dyno Don's '68 Logghe car, trick Shedlik paint job. Also, Don was runner-up to Paul Stage's AA/C in Super Eliminator (pre-Funny Car Eliminator) at '68 Indy Nationals. - Danny White | Nicholson's early-season '68 car was destroyed in late July in a collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle, according to the 7/26/68 edition of Drag Times. Crewmembers Jim Campbell and Wally English were returning Nicholson's car to Detroit following the Super Stock Nationals. The impact threw the Cougar over the cab and onto the roadway, demolishing it. English was killed in the collision; Campbell was injured but recovered. - RT | The Cougar debuted at a match race in May against Jim Liberman at Capitol. Don lost two transmissions and the match when Jim strapped a 7.66/187.88 on him in the first race and rain kept the next two rounds from being run."Dyno also didn't have too much luck when he showed up for the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18. During a time trial run, he broke a timing chain, and he was unable to run in eliminations."Dyno" showed the world that he was still one of the top dogs in Funny Car racing when he showed up at Milan, Michigan on July 7 for a match race against "Fast Eddie" Schartman. Nicholson won all three races. His times were 7.66/184.04 and 7.70/182.18 in the first two races. But he really showed 'em in the last race with his 7.48/185.86. The following week (July 13), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Supercharged Invitational race. In the first round, Malcolm Durham fouled against him at Don advanced with an 8.11/165.74. He lost to Lyle Fisher's 8.19/180 in round two with an ailing 8.36/116.88. But due to the "break rule," he got back into the show for the semifinal. Once again, he faced Fisher. Lyle failed to fire this time, so "Dyno" soloed at 11.66. He met Larry Reyes in the final, and the 'Cuda had him covered, running 7.54/192 for the win over Don's 8.05/181.80 runner-up effort. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Nicholson ran his Comet for the early part of '68. He started the season with a win at Irwindale for the New Year's Day meet. He qualified second with an 8.04 and ran Low ET of the meet in the first round, when his 7.99/172.74 beat Dick Loehr's 8.18/180. An 8.04 and an 8.03 advanced Don into the finals where another 8.04 beat low qualifier Terry Hedrick. At Lions on January 28 for the AHRA Winter meet, Don qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 7.63 at 180.36. A first-round 7.65/175.56 advanced when Joe Pisano broke a transmission. Another 7.72/180.72 advanced Dyno Don into the third round where his 8.02/169.85 beat Ronnie Runyan. In the semis, both Nicholson and Dick Loehr had transmission problems, but Don won the coasting contest. He was to face Jim Liberman for the title, but even though Jim gave him extra time to fix his trans, Don was not ready. Gene Snow was brought to the line to face Liberman again (he had lost to Jim in the semifinal). The starter motioned Gene to fire up and just as he did, Nicholson's car came running out of the pits. There was quite a bit of yelling by officials, fans, and racers, but in the end, Snow ran and lost to Liberman's strong 7.84. It was just a bump in the road for Nicholson as at the next race, the second annual Stardust Open, he qualified #1 with a 7.94 and set Low ET at 7.83 while beating Ed Schartman in the final. He then took on Terry Hedrick driving the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair at a match race at OCIR, winning the first two rounds with a best of 7.97/172.74 before smoking the tires and shutting down in the last race. On March 3 at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show, he qualified second with a 7.99/180.46. A first-round 8.09/149.49 beat Al Vanderwoude (8.45). A second round 8.00/169.49 just nipped Lew Arrington's 8.03 at a fast closing 183.68. A semifinal 7.88/182.54 over Ronnie Runyan came close to his 7.81 track record. He was to face Steve Bovan in the final, but it was never run as a curfew ended the race. Then came a series of match races in April. On the 6th, he was at New York for a best of three against Hedrick. Don lost that match, but he won the following day at Cecil County where he took on another Corvair. This time he faced the "Doug's Headers" car driven by Dick Bourgeois. Don won the first race with his 8.03/170.77 beating the Corvair's 8.19/175 and in the second race, Dick fouled away an 8.39/124 while "Dyno" coasted to the win with a 9.78/89.95. While Nicholson had already sewn up the win, they came back for one more race. This time Bourgeois got the win with an 8.04/179 when "Dyno" fouled at 8.09/168.22. These two would face each other again on April 11 in Ontario, Canada. Don won their first race with an 8.47/161, but he fouled in the second and broke a transmission in the third. Shortly after that, (April 14), he faced the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove and he lost that match as well. He had a rematch against Hedrick on May 3 at Detroit. Once again, Hedrick got the better of him. In their first race, Don’s 8.36/164.83 lost to Terry's 8.08/177. He came back to win the second with a close 8.15/171.75 beating the Chevy driver's 8.16/175. In the third race, Nicholson had problems and shut off to 10.23 while Hedrick picked up the match race victory with an 8.09/177. On May 30, he competed at the Olympics of Drag Racing at Union Grove, but lost a supercharger and went out early. A match race against Bourgeois was run at Houston early in June and Don's first two runs of 8.24/161.89 and 8.66/153.55 were enough to beat Dick two straight. The Corvair's final 8.39/177 won the last race when Don shut off. By late June, Nicholson was driving the Cougar, which debuted at a match race at Capitol against Jim Liberman. |

Notes: This car never ran Pro Stock and was only raced as a heads up match racer. Don raced the car for 6 months between April and September 1969. While researching the Dyno Don book, I found the quickest times for the Cougar were a 9.99 at 138 mph recorded during a match race at Thompson, Ohio in September. |

Notes: Don's 9.81/139.81 set both ends of the national record at Atco NJ WCS meet in the fall of '70. The car also had Low ET at Indy Nationals with 9.90. Qualified fourth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 10.013/139.10 (the quickest non-Chrysler). | Don had some teething problems at the AHRA Winternationals in Jan, where the car appeared, still in primer. He lost a rod in qualifying and fouled out against Dick Arons in the opening round. In February, for the NHRA Winternationals, Dyno's Maverick qualified at 10.47/128.95 but lost to Don Grotheer in the first round. At the big OCIR US Pro Stock Championships, Don qualified fifth with a 10.05. In the first round, his 10.00 beat the Wheatley Brothers Camaro. He beat Butch Leal in the second round, and in the semifinals, he cracked a cylinder head while winning. There was no time to repair, and he ran Bill Jenkins in the final with the cracked head. Jenkins got the victory with a 9.87/139 over "Dyno's" fouling 9.93/138.24. On February 22, he qualified second with a 10.12 at Irwindale for a Pro Stock race. He ran a best of 10.10/137.19 before meeting low qualifier Dick Landy in the final. A final round 10.29/135.90 took the win when Landy fouled away a 10.24. One advantage Don had with running the Ford SOHC engine was that he could rev the motor to 8,500 to 9,000 rpm to shift. The lightweight overhead cam engine made this possible where both the big block Chevys and the Mopar Hemis were shifting at around 8,000 rpm. At AHRA's second race of '70, Don ran a best of 10.12 and faced Ed Miller in the final, but a missed shift cost him the race. Also, in March at Rockingham for the third AHRA race, the Pro-Am, Don qualified with a 10.05/137.82 and advanced to the final with a best of 10.00 before losing to Ronnie Sox. A big win at the Northern Nationals at Fremont over Bill Bagshaw came next, along with Low ET honors at 10.04/138.46. At the Super Stock Nationals on May 10, Don was disqualified. On May 16 at the AHRA Frontier Grand Am, Don lost in the semifinal. A 10.25 was all Don could do in qualifying at the AHRA Springnationals, and he lost early. Intake manifold manufacturers were not interested in developing a manifold for this engine in Pro Stock racing because there were not many of them around. But Edelbrock came up with a new tunnel ram manifold for the SOHC, and at the NHRA Springnationals, Don's Cammer had one. He had been running a stock factory single plane manifold with two bolt-on risers before this. A 10.23 in qualifying and a first-round 10.14 didn't show much, but it was the first new development for the engine in a long time. He lost to Sox in round two. At the St. Louis 1/8 mile championships, Don qualified #1 with a 6.53, set Low ET at 6.46, and won the meet. Another big win came On July 1 at Capitol. Dyno won the meet over Ronnie Sox with outstanding times of 9.88, 9.87, and 9.86, all at 139.75 and a final 9.74/140.18. In July, for the NHRA Summernationals, Dyno qualified ninth with a 10.15. At AHRA's seventh race, the New England Grand Am, on August 2, Don qualified #1 at 10.03, set an AHRA mph record at 138.46, and set Low ET and Top Speed in winning the event with a 9.88/139.53 over Ronnie Sox. On August 23, at York for the AHRA Summernationals, Don reset the AHRA Pro Stock ET and speed record to 9.78/140.62. A win at the AHRA race at Bristol over Herb McCandless was next, and his 10.07/137.19 was good for Low ET and Top Speed. A 9.90/139.31 was good for Low ET and the number one qualifier at the US Nationals, but Arlen Vanke got him in round three. At the AHRA World Finals, he qualified #1 with a 10.06 and went on to a semifinal finish. Nicholson qualified fourth at the NHRA Supernationals with a 10.01/139.10 and went on to run a best of 9.96/139.96 before losing to Vanke in round three. Shortly after this, Don was at Fremont for a best of three match against Jenkins. By this time of the season, the Ford driver had quite a power advantage over his GM rivals." Dyno" won three straight with times of 9.71/137.75, 9.75/141.50, and 9.76/141.73. The closest the "Grump" could run to these times was a 9.92/138. After such a great season, the NHRA World Finals was somewhat a letdown to Don as he failed to qualify due to a blown engine. Because of this car, and only this car, NHRA considered banning the SOHC motor from Pro Stock competition, which went down unfavorably by track owners and promoters. Also, rumors swirled wildly about Dodge picking up Don for '71. The best NHRA national event times were the 9.900 Low ET at Indy (139.31) and the 139.96 at the Ontario Supernationals. |
