Notes: Went back to the Mustang II in 1980. | Don qualified #2 at the AHRA Winternationals behind Lee Shepherd and the two finished that way, with Shepherd beating Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, "Dyno's" best of 8.75/155.44 (second alternate) failed to qualify. He made the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying #13, but he lost to Kevin Rotty in the first round. In April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Don ran a best of 8.64 in qualifying which was first alternate in the eight-car show. On May 4, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.66/155.17. In round one, an 8.65/155.44 beat Morris Johnson, but in the semifinals, his 8.73/155.44 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.51/158 (Low ET & Top Speed). At the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.82/153.84 qualified #13 and in round one, he beat Alban Gauthier. In the second round, his Mustang II broke on the line advancing eventual winner Bob Glidden.

Notes: Nicholson was at Englishtown in April for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He held the track record from two years before at 7.99. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.14/161.87 qualified #4. In the opening round of eliminations, Don Campanello broke, so Don's 8.20/165.13 advanced. In the semifinals, his 8.15/163.93 lost to the eventual winner Pat Patterson's 8.03/169. Late in May, he was at Capitol Raceway for a best of three match race against Patterson. Nicholson won two straight with times of 8.13 and 8.16 with a best speed of 169.77. In July, he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. His 8.09 qualified #2 behind Rickie Smith's 8.04. He then beat Pat Musi and John Brumley to face William Paris in the final. The two had a great race that saw "Dyno" win his sixth career IHRA event with an 8.15/164.23, beating Paris' 8.20/166. A week later (July 25), the car was destroyed at Dragway 42. He was there for a match race against Ronnie Sox. The big Boss powerplant lost a head gasket at about 130 mph, and fluid got under the tires. The car then got sideways, and Don tried to save it, but he clipped Sox's Omni. That sent Sox barrel rolling down the track while Nicholson's 11 week-old Mustang continued into the guardrail and ripped out eight support posts and 200 feet of railing. Don got off light with just a sprained ankle, and Sox was unhurt. Don had only run the car at a half dozen races. He got his act back together quickly, as he was racing his backup car at Bristol on August 3 for the IHRA Summernationals. His 8.17/169.45 (Top Speed) qualified #3. He then beat Sox's 8.33 with an 8.22 and an 8.56/156.79 advanced him into the final when Warren Johnson's Camaro broke. He may have one the final as he ran 8.20/164.83 compared to Smith's 8.32/164, but he had left a red light glowing on the tree. On August 13, he showed up at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. Don showed up with a new unlettered Mustang that had just been painted the night before. There was no lettering or decals on the car.

Notes: Don was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran good in qualifying, hitting an 8.53/159.29 for the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Harry Scribner. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #7. This time with an 8.48/158.45. But he lost early. The next race was Don's last NHRA event for a while. It was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 26. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with an 8.52, beating John Hagen in the first round. In the semifinals, he was up against Frank Iaconio. Frank beat Don, but it was a scary ride for Nicholson when a front wheel came off in the speed traps. "Dyno" showed that he could still drive a race car when he kept the Mustang upright and brought it to a safe stop. Shortly after this, he sold his Pro Stock operation to Harold Denton.

Notes: Don started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with an 8.23. A first-round 8.32 beat Jerry Haas' nitrous Monza at 8.61. In the semifinals, Lee Hunter got out of shape and "Dyno" advanced to the final against Pat Musi. Despite a quicker 8.23/166, Don had to settle for runner-up to Musi's 8.26/167. He really shook up the troops at Darlington on March 22 for the IHRA Winternationals when he qualified #1 with a 7.81/176 (Low ET and Top Speed). He ran the same numbers again in the first round, over Keith Albritten's 8.26/167. Unfortunately for Don, he had a nap in the second round and his 7.86/175 lost to Rickie Smith's 8.07/171. In April, it was like the good ol' days when "Dyno Don" met "Grumpy Jenkins" with Ray Allen driving at a best of three match race a Connecticut. Nicholson beat Allen two straight with a track record 7.87/176.17 before Allen came back to win the last race with a 7.96/169. Nicholson flexed his muscle again at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham on May 3. He qualified #1 with a 7.82 (Low ET) at 176.81 and went on to win over a motor blowing Smith in the final with an off pace 7.90/175.09. He then retired for a while, selling the car to Harold Denton who would retain Don's help for the next couple of races. It should be noted that the car was runner-up at the next IHRA event, the Springnationals, where they lost the clutch in the final. Nicholson was the third member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.81 at Darlington 3/81. - Danny White

Notes: Nicholson qualified 11th at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.83/173.74. Unfortunately, he hurt the engine on the pass and could not run in eliminations. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.93 best was the fifteenth alternate. At Atlanta, for the NHRA Southern Nationals, his 7.86/175.78 qualified #14, but in round one, his 7.93 fell to Don Campanello's 7.82. After leading qualifying early with his 7.79/177.51 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, the time fell to the #8 spot in the final qualifying order. Mike Fowler fouled against him in round one, and Don made an easy pass to advance. In round two, his ailing 8.15/167 lost to Butch Leal's 7.81/177. Dyno's best times of the year were 7.781 at Englishtown and 177.51 at Baton Rouge. | Dyno Don and Ralph Woodall had a pretty good season in 1984. They attended most of the NHRA events and qualified at many. Notes: It was like old times again at Pomona when Earl Wade and "Dyno Don" teamed up at Pomona to help sort out Frank Sicinski's car. He made two qualifying runs, and both were able to get into the show. A 7.74/182 and a 7.75/182. Don drove Frank's car at the Winternationals, hitting 7.740/182.03 in qualifying (#14) but losing to Butch Leal in round one, with a 7.78/177.79. This was the last time Nicholson would qualify at an NHRA event. "Dyno" also attempted to qualify the car at the NHRA Gatornationals but failed to make the cut. The "Dyno Don" book mentioned that he had driven the car to a best of 7.60/183.

Notes: After sitting out 1985, Ralph Woodall and Dyno came back with the 1984 Ciera for the start of the 1986 season. Don took one of his last wins when he won Pro Stock at the Coors 32 Car Funny Car show at Firebird Raceway in April. He beat Jim Basko's Camaro 7.88/174 effort in the final with a 7.89/171.40 after earlier setting Low ET with a 7.75. The team ran 7.799/171.75 in a 6th alternate effort at the Pomona Winters. That was the last NHRA national event for either man in 1986.

Notes: Ernie was at Lions on February 1, where he made a check-out pass of 8.90/137.82. Lions held an eight-car show on April 26, and Nicholson qualified with an 8.95. He picked up a bunch in the first round, as his 8.76/160.14 beat Skip Hess' 8.78/159. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.86/141.28 when Steve Korney's Anglia broke on its burnout. That put him in the final against Ron Bizio's Willys. Unfortunately, the Cuda had problems, and Ernie shut down to a 9.44/109.57 while Ron went on to win with an 8.60/162. He was back at Lions for another eight-car show on May 17. An 8.99 qualified #7, but a first-round 9.00/156.25 lost to Bizio's 8.74/160. Ernie failed to qualify for an eight-car show at OCIR on May 24. The bump spot was a 9.27. One car could not run, and Ernie's Cuda got into the show. He picked it up a whole bunch in the first round, running an 8.94/157.06, but still losing to Ron Zeller's Low ET blast of 8.63/167. Nicholson's 8.94 would have qualified for the field in the third spot. He was at OCIR on June 28 for a sixteen-car show. A first-round 9.42/151.77 advanced easily, but in round two, his 9.31/153.84 fell to Gary Densham's 8.87/160. On July 26, he was back at OCIR for another AA/GS show. He qualified #6 with an 8.94, but he fouled against Gene Modlin in the first round and lost with a 9.35.

Notes: On March 8, Nicholson was at OCIR for an eight-car show. An 8.80/159.85 beat Jr. Thompson in the first round, while in the semifinals, his off-pace 9.62/101.35 lost to Manuel Herrera's 8.59/165 in John Lombardo's Corvette. Fortunately for Ernie, Manuel hurt his motor on the run and was unable to run in the final so Nicholson was reinstated. It didn't help much, however, as in the final the 'Cuda's transmission let go and he slowed to 17.67/96.67 in his loss to Ron Nunes' 8.64/162.
