Notes: On April 20, he had the only fuel FC that showed up at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the second NHRA Division 2 race. He made a 14.25/53.50 solo to win. At the 1980 AHRA GrandNats, Dragway 42, Don was an alternate for this 8-car show, but rain delays sent many teams home, including Tom McEwen. McEwen qualified 5th and was replaced by Nieves' Charger. Notes: Nikolis qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.871/171.42. He lost to Frank Iaconio in the opening round of eliminations, 7.81/178 to 8.029/172.74. Nick went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals but failed to qualify (thirteenth alternate) with a 7.911. He also went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he was again unable to qualify, finishing as the number one alternate at 7.880/176.47. Nick finished in the 5th alternate slot in Columbus with a 7.929/170.13. That was his last NHRA national event in 1984. |

Notes: Nick was the fifth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.80/178.07. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 7.75/174.75 qualified #14. He improved to 7.68/178.85 in the first round, to beat Bruce Allen's 7.77/174. In round two, he fouled away a 7.80 against eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.55. He had to sit out and watch the race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 7.87/176.95 was the seventh alternate. He made the field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where Nick qualified #13 with a 7.74/177.51. An off-pace 7.95/169.55 lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.77/177 in the first round. It was back to watching the show at the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the second alternate with a 7.79/177.30. The following week (June 23), Nikolis traveled to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. A 7.83 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but his 7.81 in the first round, lost to Ken Dondero's 7.78. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals and qualified #13 with a 7.69/179.78. Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. | Nick ran well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.57/181.81 qualified #2 and he repeated that number in the first round, when his 7.57/181.81 beat Don Coonce. In round two, his 7.60/182.18 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled against him, but in the semifinals, a 7.62/181.08 wasn't enough to beat Warren Johnson's 7.58/184. After running so well at Pomona, he had a bad outing at the NHRA Gatornationals. During qualifying, he ran a 7.68/181.23, but at the end of the run, the Firebird got airborne and flipped onto its roof. The car slid on its roof before coming to a stop. Nick was OK. |

Notes: Ran 7.622/183.89 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87. | Nick was the eighth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 7.64/181.01. He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and still used his "small" NHRA combination to run 7.51/183 to qualify #15. He lost to eventual winner Rickie Smith in round one. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.52/183.97 qualified #14, but he lost to Lee Dean in the first round. Atlanta was his next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Nick qualified #12 with a 7.56/183.33. He improved to 7.52/184.01 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.49/183. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Nick qualified on the "bump" with a 7.68/181.01. Gary Brown fouled against him in round one, and Nick ran an easy 8.40/134.00 to advance. In the second round, he fouled against Reid Whisnant and shut off to 9.28. He really improved at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 7.54/181.92 qualified in the top half of the field (#5). Unfortunately, he fell off to 7.70/181.15 in a first-round loss to Stan Mizell's 7.67/180. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine race. It was an eight-car show and Nick's 7.66 qualified #7. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.62/181.45 against Ken Koretsky. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There his 7.62/183.89 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Bob Glidden. It was a good race and Nikolis prevailed, running a 7.60/181.89 to beat Glidden's 7.61/184. In round two he ran his best time of the weekend, a 7.58 at 183.03, but it wasn't enough to beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/184. He continued to qualify well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where a 7.54/183.59 got him the #6 spot in the show. Qualifying was one thing, but getting past that first-round was another. Here he lost to Larry Morgan in round one. Denver was the next stop on the NHRA schedule and Nick qualified #9 for the show with an 8.01/172.47. This set up a rematch against low qualifier, Glidden in round one. This time Nick got out of shape and shut off while Glidden went on to win the race. Twenty Nine cars attempted to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Nick's 7.61/181.63 qualified #8 ahead of such stars as Leal and Morgan. A first-round 7.59/181.81 advanced when Morgan fouled and in round two his 7.67/181.55 beat Jerry Eckman's late 7.58/182.55. An off pace 7.75/181.05 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Allen's 7.57/183 in the Reher and Morrison Beretta. He qualified impressively at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals where his 7.49/188.99 qualified #5. Considering that there were 52 cars attempting for the sixteen-car field he was doing pretty well. But a 7.58/183.97 lost to Korestsky's 7.54/183 in the first round. He was the #5 qualifier again at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 7.50/183.56. He improved to 7.48/184.08 in the first round, to beat Joe Sway's 7.56/182. In round two he ran Glidden, and he shut off to a 7.87/151.74 after seeing it was hopeless to try to catch Bob's 7.38/186. He He qualified in the undesirable #9 spot at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.43/184.84 forcing him to run low qualifier, Glidden in round one, again. Nikolis ran a great 7.44/184.69 in their first-round race, but Bob's 7.41/187 got the win. |

Notes: IHRA continued to run the big motors with a weight penalty against the small 500 cubic inch cars. Nick used one of the small motors to qualify #2 (7.348/187.50) at the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Neil Moyer in the first round, and a 7.41/185.95 beat James Antonette in round two. Tim Nabors' 7.38/188 in the semifinal beat his 7.43. He was attempted to qualify at the Gatornationals but missed making the show. Nick qualified at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where a strong 7.37/185.91 qualified #8. He got past Jerry Haas in the first round but lost to Larry Morgan in the second round. At the Summernationals at Englishtown, a best of 7.46/185.56 was good for the ninth alternate. His best of 7.52/182.29 was the third alternate at the Northstar Nationals, but at the next event, the US Nationals, he broke through and qualified #16 with a 7.42/184.99. A first-round 7.45/184.31 lost to Don Beverley's 7.42/185. From there, it was off to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals, where Nick ran a best of 7.41/185.49 for the first alternate. Nikolis made the field at the Chief Nationals, qualifying #11 with a 7.35/185.49. He met with Bob Glidden in the first round, and despite a good 7.41/185.60, he lost to Glidden's 7.35/188. Nick also drove his own car on the NHRA tour this year. We need to validate which car ran where. |

Notes: Nikolis was at Darlington in the middle of March for the IHRA Winternationals. 26 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. IHRA was just returning to its mountain motor Pro Stock roots at this time. Still, the first two qualifiers were small500 cubic inch cars. Nick's 7.348/187.50 qualified second behind Steve Schmidt's similar,7.34/188. A 7.42/186.72 advanced when Neil Moyer failed to show in the opening round of eliminations. A second-round 7.41/185.95 defeated James Antonette. In the semifinal, his 7.43/185 fell to eventual winner Tim Nabors who was driving a mountain motored (689) to a 7.38/188. The following week (March 19), he failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals, but that wasn't unusual, at there were more non-qualifiers(34)than qualifiers. He qualified #8 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in early May with a 7.37/185.91. He beat Jerry Haas in the opening round before losing to Larry Morgan in round two. He also went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, in round one, his 7.62/181.11 lost to John Nobile's 7.57/182. He continued to have trouble making the fields at the NHRA national events. He was the ninth alternate at Englishtown for the Summernationals with a 7.46/185.56. Nick was the third alternate at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.52/182.29. He qualified on the "bump" at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 7.42/184.99. His opening round 7.45/184.31 lost to Don Beverley's 7.42/185. At the next event, the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, he was the first alternate with a 7.41/185.49 best. Nick ran the entire incredibly tough NHRA tour, qualifying three times and winning one round. Best times from Ennis and Pomona Winters, respectively. Nick also drove the Paul Rebeschi car on the IHRA tour this year. We need to validate which car ran where. |

Notes: Nick ran 7.434/185.56 in Atlanta for his best speed of the year (12th alternate). He was the first alternate at Sanair at 7.456/182.70.
