Notes: The Dodge Chargers were the first late-model supercharged sedans, built for Chrysler and campaigned in 1964. Pre-dating even Chrisman's '64 Comet, they are often cited as the first funny cars. A safety-cautious NHRA was leary of them. The Chargers were generally limited to making exhibition runs with one another. (The S/FX - Supercharged, Factory experimental - class designation on the cars was fabricated and didn't actually exist at the time.) Both Chargers were '64 Dodge 330 sedans with blown gas-burning 480" (stroker 426) wedges and TorqueFlites. Body mods included aluminum Super Stock-type front ends, radiused wheelwells, rolled front and rear pans, and parachute pods in the rear decklid. Chi-town's Bud Roche and Don Mattison of "GuZler" rail fame bought both of the former "Dodge Chargers" in 1965 and matchraced them in the Upper Midwest for that season. Renaming them the "GuZler Charger"(s), they replaced the blown gas wedge, TorqueFlite combo with a fuel-burning 392 Chrysler, direct drive package. One car was destroyed in a rollover at Cordova, IL in October '65. The second survived a decades-long disappearance and has recently been fastidiously restored. - RT | We need confirmed best times for these cars in 1964. Hot rod article (see racer website link) cited high 10s at 130.

Notes: At NHRA Bristol, Jimmy Nix entered two cars, the Carroll Brothers & Oxman car and his own blown Chevy dragster! He was low qualifier at 7.65/192.70 in the Carroll Bros. machine and went 7.80/202.84 in the Chevy. He beat Danny Ongais in Round one with the Carroll Bros. machine at 7.56/195.22, but crossed the centerline and lost with the Chevy (avoiding what could have been a very interesting eventual matchup)! He beat Marvin Schwartz in round two, but lost a close one to Tom Hoover in the semis.

The 208 at Richmond was considered the fastest in the sport for 1965. | At NHRA Bristol, Jimmy Nix entered two cars, the Carroll Brothers & Oxman car and his own dragster! He was low qualifier at 7.65/192.70 in the Carroll Bros. machine and went 7.80/202.84 in his car. The new car in April reportedly had Jimmy switching to a hemi, but the NHRA reports from the Bristol event refer to his car as Chevy. We need to confirm.

Notes: Smilin' Jimmy was at Oklahoma City on April 21 for the Drag World Fuel Championships. He qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.09 and made his way into the final by stopping Pete Robinson's SOHC Ford in the semifinals with a 7.28/202.70. In the final, he ran Low ET setter, Bennie Osborn. In the final, Nix won the race by beating Osborn's 7.35/222 with a 7.13/219.23. He took another big win over an eight-car field at LaPlace in May. He qualified #5 with a 7.57 and improved to a first-round 7.47 over Dave Chenevert. Jimmy set a track ET record and Top Speed in the semifinal with a 6.89/218.96 over Dan Rightsell. A final round 7.13/162.45 got the win over a quicker Kerry MacKenroth at 7.05/211. On June 9, he was at Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race. It was a sixteen-car show, and 26 cars attempted to qualify. Nix ran 7.45/207.36 for the #6 spot. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round, against Kenny Bernstein.

Notes: Jimmy's season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #13 with a 4.96/279.41, but in round one, his 4.99/275.65 lost to Joe Amato's 4.98/291. Things didn't go quite so well at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona where a best run of 5.51/176.99 failed to qualify for the show. Nix rebounded nicely at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston where he ran a career best (to this point) of 4.90 at 251.67 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, he fouled against Tony Pedregon in the first round and shut off to 5.39/182. Jimmy was left on the outside looking in at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.31/210 best failed to make the show. He was back in the show at NHRA's next race, the Southern Nationals, where he ran 5.01/257.65 to qualify #14. Once again, he lost in the first round, but Kenny Bernstein needed a slight holeshot to win this time. Kenny's 4.94/293 beat Nix's quicker 4.93/277.17. The pattern continued however, when at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he was back to being a non-qualifier. A 5.08/271.41 was good for the first alternate. He did not go to Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 4.98/274.72 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he broke on the line in the first round, giving opponent Donnie Little a free ride into round two. He was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals, but his best of 7.03/197.45 was good for the sixth alternate. He also failed to qualify at the IHRA Sunoco Fuels Pro Modified Shootout at Huntsville Dragway. Tom was the first alternate at the IHRA Summernationals with a 6.80/197.97 best. The following week (July 25), he was in New England for the IHRA Northeast Nationals, where he ran a best of 6.84/201.65 (second alternate).

Notes: Tom qualified #15 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.88/202.52. Unfortunately, he fouled against Shannon Jenkins in the first round and shut off to a 7.38/150 loss. Only one Pontiac made the field at the Nebraska Motorplex in mid-August for the IHRA Mid-American Nationals, and it was Tom's. His 6.80/203.89 qualified #10. In the opening round, his 6.83/203.38 beat Steve Johnson's 6.87/204. In the second round, his 6.86 lost to Shannon Jenkins' 6.80. Shortly after that (August 28), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Once again, he had the only Pontiac-bodied car to qualify. His 6.80/203.34 got him the #7 spot in the field. Bill Neri fouled against him in the first round, and he advanced with a 6.87/202.79. Another 6.87 at 202.11 defeated Roy Wasko's quicker 6.84/201 in round two. Scotty Cannon broke against him in the semi-final, and Nixon ran 6.93/201.83 to advance. He faced Pat Moore in the final, and Tom's 6.93/202.42 finished runner-up to Pat's 6.74/210.
