Notes: Bob was at Irwindale on May 15 for the NHRA Division 7 race. Forty-one cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Bob's 6.80 qualified #5. An opening round 6.98 advanced over Roger Rowe, but another 6.98 at 191.08 lost to eventual winner Rick Ramsey's 6.83/204. A week later (May 22), he was at OCIR for another sixteen-car show. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.98/205.71 lost to eventual winner Dwight Salisbury's 6.78/218. Noice was back at Irwindale for the Memorial Day Championships on May 31. This was an eight-car field and Bob's 6.91 in the first round, lost to Don Moody's 6.73. At the second Division 7 race held at Fremont, Bob again went out early. A 6.98 in the first round, lost to Dave Uyehara's 6.65. He failed to qualify for the OCIR Nitro Championships, but he wasn't alone as Salisbury, James Warren, Ken Safford among others failed to make the sixteen-car field. He also failed to qualify at OCIR for the PDA Championships on July 28. Grand Prix, Irwindale CA 1971. Bob qualified #29 at NHRA Ontario at 6.858 (no speed recorded). He lost to Carl Olson in round one, 6.72/214 to 6.81/205.94. | The Acceleration Archive's UK reporter took photos with his round-by-round coverage of the '71 Supers, here online, and shows Noice in the new, unpainted, Brissette Avenger Tuttle car. This is the same Tuttle RE that they ran well through 1975. - Joe Moore

Notes: Also ran 6.32 at Fremont and 6.34 at Lions Last Drag Race. Qualified at Indy 1972 at 6.451/220.58 (best NHRA national event speed) and ran 6.36 in a Round 2 loss. 6 Finished 3rd in Div 7 points. | Bob was at the Lions Grand Premiere race in January He won a close first-round race over Don Moody's 6.48/222 with a 6.47/225. He advanced easily in round two when Gerry Glenn fouled, but a 6.52/200.85 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.39/207. He got some revenge on the "Snake" at the OCIR All-Pro Opener where he soloed in the first round, when Prudhomme lost oil pressure and shut off. Unfortunately, Noice lost in the semifinals. The team failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals which was surprising as it was a 32-car field with a "bump" of 6.90. In March, the team was at Las Vegas for the National Open. Bob made it into the final where his quicker 6.74 lost to Larry Dixon's 6.75. The next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. It was another 32-car show and Noice lasted until round two before being beat by James Warren. He was then runner-up to Gary Southern at an Irwindale Top Fuel show. The final OCIR All-Pro race was held on March 25 and Noice didn't get very far in eliminations as in the first round, the car failed to fire advancing Moody into round two. The team broke through and won the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Irwindale. Bob ran as well as 6.41 in round two while beating Rick Ramsey. In the final he faced Moody and Moody broke so Noice ran 6.43/222 for the victory. He also won the Division 7 race at Sacramento. He had a little luck on the way as in round one, Frank Bradley lost fire and he singled. In round two, Randy Allison broke against him. His only real race came in the semifinals where a 6.53 beat Gary Ormsby. In the final, Bob picked up to a 6.43 at a shutting off 184.43 to beat Dennis Baca. Next stop was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a 32-car field and Noice lasted until round three before he fouled against Tom McEwen. Bob ran his best ET at the Ontario Supernationals with a 6.251/216.86 qualifier.

Notes: Runner up to James Warren at Irwindale 8/04/73 at 6.81/155.70. Obviously ran much faster than that in 1973. We need the best speed. Ran 6.76 at Orange County Big 4 on 5/12/73. Noice did not start the '73 season the way he would have liked. He failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race. That was just a tiny hic-up, as this team had a very good year. The Donovan-powered cars were running very competitive, and in the hotly contested Division 7, Bob was always tough. At OCIR's second All-Pro race, Noice ran 6.46 to qualify #7 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.36/208.81 in round one, to beat Frank Prock's 6.48/221. But he shut off early in the semifinal against James Warren. The team did not compete at either the AHRA or the NHRA Winternationals. They were back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. Once again, he got the #7 spot in the eight-car show with a 6.55. John Wiebe broke against him in round one, and his 6.70/189.07 advanced. In the semifinal, an off-pace 7.17/152.02 lost to Don Moody's 6.31/224. The next stop was the Bakersfield March Meet. Bob qualified #20, and in the first round, he upset Warren's tire-smoker with a 6.94. Unfortunately, a broken fuel pump shaft kept him from running against Danny Ongais in the next round. He ran really well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified #2 behind Jerry Ruth. But he lost to Chris Karamesines in the opening round of eliminations. Shortly after that, he was at Fresno Dragway for the Winter Race of Champions. There he fouled against Walt Rhoades in the opening round. The following week (March 24), OCIR held its final All-Pro race. This featured sixteen-car fields. Bob's 6.57 qualified #12. His 6.61/208.81 lost to eventual winner in the first round, Moody's 6.42/205. Early in April, he raced at the Las Vegas Open. But in round one, his 6.68 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.66. On April 15, Noice was at Sacramento for the California State Championships. This was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.79/198.68 beat Moody's tire-smoking 8.33/103. But in the semifinals, the car came to the line ailing, and he lost to eventual winner Warren's 6.28. He returned to OCIR in May for its Constructor's Championships. A 6.79 qualified #26. In the first round, his 6.74/210.77 narrowly lost to Dave Uyehara's 6.73/206. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Division 7 race at Bakersfield. Bob ran well at the 6th annual OCIR Nitromethane Championships in June. It was a sixteen-car show, and Bob ran a best of 6.40 in the semifinals to beat Tom McEwen. In the final, he ran against Carl Olson, and both ran 6.42, but Carl got the win.

Notes: Noice qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.165/223.88. Norm Wilcox fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 7.00/183.67. In round two, his 6.20/201.34 defeated Frank Bradley's 6.43/215. Unfortunately, his off-pace 6.83/157.61 in the semifinal lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.21/220. He competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.21/227.27 qualified #6 in the 32-car field. A 6.45 in the opening round lost to Rance McDaniel's 6.39. Shortly after that, he was at Fresno for its Winter Race of Champions. A 6.37 qualified #4 for the sixteen-car show. In round one, Don Durbin lost fire, and Noice made an easy solo to advance. Bob was late off the line in the second round, and his 6.48/227 lost to Bob Neal's 6.52/227. On March 23, he was at Irwindale for the Fox Hunt race. This was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3 at 6.31. McDaniel's 6.53 in the first round, lost to Noice's 6.54, but he smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to eventual winner Frank Prock's 6.30. He ended the month of March at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Once again, he qualified well, running 6.38 for the #4 spot in the sixteen-car field. Dave Uyehara's Chevy broke in the opening round, and Noice advanced easily. He also survived the second round, but he overpowered the track in the semifinals and went up in smoke, losing to Don Garlits' 6.14/232. On April 6, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. It was another sixteen-car show and his 6.40 qualified #12. In the opening round of competition, his 6.42 fell to Walt Rhodes' 6.36. The NHRA Division 7 opener was held at Pomona on May 5. It featured a twelve-car Top Fuel field. Noice's 6.21/227.27 qualified #9. A troubled 6.70 in the first round, lost to Dwight Salisbury's 6.33. Not long after that, he was at Irwindale for its third annual T-Shirt Night event. This was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, Bob advanced when McDaniel's Chevy expired on the line. In round two, he shut down to a 7.09/153.84 loss to Bob Williams' 6.56/180. For the second NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento, Noice qualified #7 in the 12 car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Herbert. Noice tried hard, but his 6.27/227.44 lost to Herbert's 6.13/234. Bob was at OCIR for its Nitro Jam race at the end of June. He beat Wilcox, driving the "Skyjacker" in the first round, with a 6.48, but a second-round 6.55/187.50 lost to eventual winner Williams' 6.45. A week later (July 6), he was at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. Unfortunately, he went up in smoke in the first round, and lost to Leland Kolb. He was back at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a 32-car field, and he ran 6.33 in round two before losing to Jake Johnston driving the "Keeling-Clayton" car in round three. Noice was at Irwindale on August 10 for its ninth annual Grand Prix. He failed to reach the finals, but he did run a strong 6.28 in the first round, to drop Tony Nancy's 6.38. At the NHRA US Nationals, Bob qualified #11 in the 32-car field with a 6.165/225.56. A 6.210/224.43 in the opening round beat Shirley Muldowney's 6.56/177. But despite running a career-best (to this point) 6.119/224.43 in round two, he lost to Dale Funk's quicker-leaving 6.156/234. Bob also ran 6.12 at Fremont. The team nickname was Avengers.

Notes: Donovan engines were not running up to par with the KB and Milodon-powered cars in TF by '76. That being said, the Bakersfield March Meet of '76 saw John Wiebe drive his to the pole over the 32-car field, and Herm Petersen qualified his among the top eight as well. Noice ran 6.13/227.27 for the #14 spot in the field. In the first round, he slowed to 6.53/187.89 in a loss to John Rodeck's 6.18/220.

Notes: Used comp number 7710 also. Photo from 1979 US Nationals. Car still has former driver Kelly Brown's #1 on cowl. | The Donovan did pretty well in competition in Top Fuel in the '77-'78 seasons, but in '79 the writing was on the wall. But there were still some strong holdouts who refused to switch. Who could blame Jim Brissette and Mike Drake? After all, the team had won the NHRA points championship in '78 with Kelly Brown behind the wheel. He had also won four major NHRA events along the way. And so, with Bob Noice taking over the driving chores, the team entered the '79 season with hopes for a repeat. Things started really well when Bob qualified the car #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.96. He had one of only two Donovan powered cars that qualified. Noice beat Larry Dixon in the opening round and a second round 6.09 beat former driver Brown’s 6.15. In the semifinal, a 6.03/225.56 beat Shirley Muldowney's slightly quicker 6.02/243. Bob went into the final where he faced Rob Bruins. Rob was driving Gaines Markley's car and had run 5.85 in his semifinal race. But in the final, Rob was shut off on the line with a fuel leak and Noice ran a solo 11.37 for the victory. Brissette had won the Winternationals for the second year in a row. But after a great start to the year, the team was disappointed at Gainesville where they failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals. Brown had driven the car to a runner-up finish there the season before. The NHRA Cajun Nationals was the next NHRA event on the schedule and it was postponed by rain from April 29 to May 2. Noice qualified #7 in the eight-car field and he lost to Johnny Abbott in the first round. Things didn't go to well at Columbus either for the NHRA Springnationals where they failed to qualify. This was a race the Brissette and Drake team had won in '78. The next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field so qualifying was tough, but Noice ran 6.11 to qualify #4. But in round one, he lost to Connie Kalitta. The team made a stop at Amarillo for the NHRA Division 4 race where Noice beat Pat Dakin in an all-Donovan powered Top Fuel final. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Bob’s 6.03/240.64 qualified #13. A slightly better 6.02 in round one, lost to Dave Uyehara's 5.92. The team then traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The eight-car field had six cars qualify in the fives and Noice (#5) was one of them. His speed in qualifying was 236.84. He soloed in the first round, when low qualifier Brown broke. But a semifinal 6.07 lost to eventual winner Richard Tharp's 5.88 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. After that, the team stopped off at Richmond Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division 2 race. The field was short as only six cars showed. Bob ran 6.21/195.65 to beat Ed Moses' 6.61/205 and then got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal where he ran 6.22 to advance. He faced Bobby Hilton in the final and Bobby got the win with a 6.12/230 over Noice's 6.36/182.18. Somewhere along the way to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals the car picked up a lot of power as Noice ran 5.88/248.61 to qualify #9 in the 32-car show. He had by far the quickest Donovan in the field. Bob beat Junior Kaiser in the first round, but in round two, the car lost fire on the burnout and Tharp soloed into round three. Only one Donovan made the sixteen-car field at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals and it belonged to Noice. His 5.96/218.44 qualified #10. But Bob must have been tired, as he took a little nap on the line in the first round, before he woke up and ran 6.15/230.76 only to lose to Hank Johnson's 6.23/227. The NHRA World Finals was held at Ontario Motor Speedway and Bob qualified #15 there with a 6.18/235.60. But his season ended badly - he was faced against Uyehara in the opening round. After fouling at the start, he blew the engine half-way down the track, slowing to 6.86/177. All in all, it wasn't that bad a season as they finished fifth in the NHRA season long points chase, but it didn’t compare to 1978.

Notes: Noice definitely liked the Donovan. He was one of the earliest users of the engine. He rode the crest when the Donovan ran really well in Top Fuel competition until when it started to fall behind the late model aluminum engines in '76. Bob continued to run the 417 through that rough time and when Ed Donovan developed some new heads for the engine it got a reprieve and lasted a few more years in TF. From '77-'79 the engine did good, but by '80 the late model engines from Milodon and Keith Black were now pushing the Donovan out of Top Fuel competition for good. Of the Donovan powered cars left in the running by 1980, Noice had the strongest. At the NHRA Winternationals he was the only one using the motor to make the show and he qualified #8 with a 5.910/237.46. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, before losing to John Kimble in round two. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. Bob qualified #5 with a 5.96 at the Gatornationals, where he was once again the only Donovan in the show, but he lost early. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, the PRO classes were eight-car fields and Noice failed to qualify with a best of 6.08. Bob continued to qualify well for the sixteen-car shows using the "outdated" Donovan motor. A 6.01/248.61 (Top Speed) qualified #8 at the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Jody Smart in the first round, but in round two against Larry Brown, he broke two rods and oiled the track in a loss. On June 28, he was at the NHRA Mile High Nationals where a 6.04 qualified #2. He goofed up in the first round, against Jeb Allen when he left before the tree was actuated.
