Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Ran incredible 7.42 track record and quickest pro stock run to date at Budds Creek Mountain Motor Nationals in 1984. Brand new car was not finished until June, and the team missed half the UDRA season. They broke their base motor and so they built this 615 incher, which set the great times at Budds Creek in August. He lost a close one to Bob Harris in the semis, 7.65/180.36 to 7.68/180.00. |

Notes: This was the car to beat on the UDRA circuit. Bob started the season by qualifying on the "bump" at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.51/180. In the first round, he lost to Roy Hill when he had clutch issues and slowed to 7.92/184. He was at Byron Dragway for the UDRA Springnationals in May. Olson ran 7.72/178.92 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. The car was consistent, running 7.74/177 over Gary Duckworth and 7.71/178.21 to reach the finals where he was to meet low qualifier Don Coonce. Don had broken in his semifinal win and was a no-show for the final. Bob ran a solo 7.70/178.21 for the victory. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, the team didn't qualify so well (#14), but they did well in eliminations. In the first round, Hill fouled, and in round two, Bob Glidden got out of shape in his T-Bird and shut off. This put Olson into the semifinal, where he lost to the race's eventual winner Darrell Alderman in Jerry Haas' Camaro. He ran an incredible speed of 182.18 while qualifying #8 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Charlie Peppers in the first round. The next IHRA race was the Northern Nationals at Milan. Bob qualified #11, but in the first round, he fouled against Hill. At the NHRA Summernationals, the team was #8 in qualifying, and Olson beat Bob Harris in round one, but in the second round, he fouled against Glidden. He had to gamble on the 'tree as Glidden ran 7.41 compared to his 7.63 on the run. Back on his "home" turf, the UDRA, he won the Hoosier Nationals at Muncie. He had only qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.05/178, but he beat Jeff Wick's Arrow in the first round, with an 8.34/167, and in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.88/179 to beat a wheelstanding Jim Feurer. He was up against low qualifier Bill Kuhlmann in the final, and the two had a great race with Bob's 7.75/179 winning over Bill's 7.72/182.81. The PHR Championships were running under IHRA rules. Bob qualified #5 at 7.54/184.52, but he fouled against Hill in the first round. He then went to Wisconsin International Raceway for the UDRA Summernationals. Bob's 7.88/177 qualified #2 behind Bill Kuhlman's 7.83/185. These two would work their way into the final. Olson ran 7.81/177 over Charlie Hnatek, and he then dropped Jeff Wick in the semifinal. Bill had been running slightly quicker in eliminations, running a 7.78 best. Olson ran the better time in the final with a 7.85/173, but he lost to Kuhlman's quick-leaving 7.90/182. To add insult to injury, Olson had held the track record coming into this race at 7.88, but Kuhlman now reset it to 7.78. He continued to qualify well at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He got the #7 spot in the sixteen-car field and defeated Terry Walters in the opening round. Unfortunately, he lost to Darrell Alderman in round two. In September, Olson was a little off his usual pace at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. He only qualified #10, and he lost in the opening round of competition. 237 IHRA, UDRA racer. Photo from IHRA World Nationals Norwalk, OH. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. |

Notes: Carl qualified #16 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.20/214.79. In the first round, an off-pace 7.37 lost to Connie Kalitta's 7.13 in his Boss 429-powered car. He did have the satisfaction of setting Top Speed at 225.00. On February 29, he and 34 others showed up at OCIR for the second All-Pro event. With only eight spots up for grabs, the qualifying was hectic, and Carl failed to make the show. He ran a 7.07 to qualify #15 at the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 16. But a first-round 7.35/222.22 was no match for Hank Clark's 6.99/220. On June 7, the team was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Twelve cars attempted to make the field, and Olson qualified #1 with a 7.01/216.34. In round one, he beat Glen Woolsey's 7.18/205 with a 7.02/220.58 (Top Speed of the meet). In the semifinals, Olson ran Low ET with a 6.99 at 217.38 to beat Tommy Allen. This put him into the final against Chuck Griffith in the Ford-powered "Starlite" dragster. Carl smoked the tires while Chuck got the win with a 7.16/220. He raced at an eight-car show at Irwindale on September 13. The team had just switched to a 426 Hemi. A 7.06 qualified fifth, but he improved to a 7.02/220.58 in the first round to beat low qualifier Dwight Salisbury's 7.10/197. In the semifinal, a 6.95/216.34 beat a shutting-off Norm Wilcox. In the final, a 6.96/222.22 defeated Frank Pedregon's 7.21/210.; Photo: Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters website - MB |

Notes: Carl was at OCIR on January 4 for the first All-Pro race. In the opening round, his 6.95/216.34 lost to John Wiebe's 6.76/216. He failed to qualify for the second All-Pro race held on January 18. The following week (January 26), the "Ewell-Bell" car was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, his 7.02/209.30 in the opening round lost to Ron Hampshire's 6.85/216. The team qualified #4 at Pomona with a 6.823/227.27 (Top Speed of the Meet). Carl beat Earl Binns in round one, 7.050/223.32 to 7.16/212, but broke in round two against Jim Davis. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.93 qualified #9 in the 32-car field. In round one, his 7.09 beat Frank Bradley's quicker 7.06. In round two, Carl's 6.96/220 lost to Norm Wilcox's 6.85/225 in the "California Charger." Carl ran 6.84 at Irwindale on 7/4/70. Carl was a DNQ at NHRA Ontario, but we are not sure which car that was. |

Notes: Olson won Top Fuel at Pomona in 1972. Runner up at Columbus 72. Semis at the Summers. He also ran 6.21 and 6.233/227.27 at Indy 1972, 6.18 at 229.59 at Ontario 72, and 6.29 at Martin. | This team had a great year in '72. Mike Kuhl was a talented engine builder, and Carl Olson knew how to drive. The season started at OCIR for the second All-Pro race. Carl’s 6.65 in the opening round beat a quicker 6.62 by Jim Paoli. In the semifinals, eventual winner Don Moody strapped a 6.46 on him that beat his 6.60. The following week (January 28), they were at Lions for the Grand Premiere race. Olson qualified #9, giving him the honor of facing low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. He pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled. Don went on to win the event. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. They didn't qualify so well as their 6.87 was good for the #29 spot in the 32-car show, but in eliminations, he picked up two-tenths. A first-round 6.60 beat Chris Karamesines' 6.85, and in round two, another 6.60 beat a tire-smoking Tony Nancy. In the third round, both he and Prudhomme were on and off the pedal in a twin tire smoker that saw Olson come out on top. In the semifinals, Gary Cochran was shut off on the line with a fuel leak so Olson took it easy on the run. He faced #2 qualifier Dennis Baca in the final, and Baca had been running 6.50s, so he was tough. But in their race, Dennis smoked the tires and Olson got the victory with a 6.74/219.51. It was then back to OCIR for the third All-Pro race. It was another eight-car field and Olson just made the show, running a 6.56 for the #8 spot. In round one, Paul Gommi fouled against him, and in the semifinals, his 6.58/227.27 beat Jeb Allen's 6.74/218 and moved him into another final round. He faced a very tough customer in the form of Clayton Harris who was about to break out and have a great year. At this event, Harris had been running 6.20s. No one was close to him in performance, and it showed in the final, where Carl's 6.57/227.27 finished runner-up to Harris' 6.27/234. It was then on to the Bakersfield March Meet, where Olson qualified #6 with a 6.67/224.42. He beat John Rodeck's 7.01 in the first round, with a 6.72 and a 6.64/223.88 took out Phil Soares' 6.68 in round two. Round three (32-car field) had Olson's 6.70 beat Herm Petersen and in the semifinals, he beat Allen. Tom McEwen was his final-round opponent, and once again, he was the underdog. McEwen had dipped into the 6.30s in eliminations, and in the final, Olson stepped up with a 6.54/226.13, but it wasn't enough as the 'Goose" won with a 6.44/232. The team scored another runner-up finish at Fresno for the Race of Champions event. There, the car broke just off the line in the final against Baca. The runner-up finishes didn't stop there, as on March 25, they were at the final OCIR All-Pro race. The final event featured a sixteen-car field. Olson ran 6.58 over Billy Tidwell in the opening round, and a 6.55 beat Nancy in round two. Dwight Salisbury smoked the tires in the semis, and a 6.46 moved the "Kuhl and Olson" car into the final. He faced the "Snake," and Prudhomme had the advantage, running a 6.34/235 to win only Olson's 6.49/225.56. But Olson had accumulated the most points and won the OCIR All-Pro points championship. In April, the team competed at the Pro Fuel Circuit race at Lions. Olson didn't win, but he ran a strong 6.45 in the first round. Yet another runner-up finish came at the Pro Fuel Circuit race at Ventura County. It was an interesting show for Carl. He had run 6.46 to qualify, and then, in the first round of eliminations, Bob Ivett fouled against him. Olson’s car broke on the line, so he got out and started to push it down the track. After pushing it for a while, the starter figured that enough was enough, and he would eventually get it there; a push truck pushed it off the track. The car was repaired and won the semifinal race, moving Carl into the final with Norm Wilcox. This time, Olson lost to a holeshot that saw his 6.37 fall to Wilcox's 6.39. They traveled to Seattle for the Northwest National Open. They were running great. Larry Hendrickson was the first car to fall to Olson's 6.38/227.27. In round two, he and McEwen had a close one, but Carl's 6.34/229.59 overcame Tom's 6.35/235. In the semifinals, Olson blasted out a 6.40/224.42 to trailer Hank Johnson's 6.43/234. As good as the team had been running, they had nothing at co-finalist Jerry Ruth, who had set a 6.19 track record in his semifinal race. Unfortunately, Olson had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure in the final while Ruth roared to a 6.24/236 for the win. They must have been getting sick of all their runner-up finishes, but at least they were getting into the final rounds. Early in June, they were in Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Olson qualified #1 with a new IHRA record of 6.20/222.22. He beat Doug Mead with a 6.34/216.34, and in round two, he ran 6.45/162 over Marvin Graham's 6.83. Dan Rightsell broke against him in the semifinals, and Olson advanced with a 6.57. The team found themselves in another top fuel final round. But the trend continued - second qualifier "TV" Tommy Ivo ran a 6.25/237.46 in the final to nip Olson's 6.26/233.16. A week later (June 11), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Carl’s 6.52 qualified #10. In the first round, he got a good start, and his 6.53 held off Flip Schofield's quicker 6.51. In round two, he beat Billy Campbell's 6.58 with a 6.42, and another 6.42 beat Chuck Kurzawa's 6.56 in the semifinals. His opponent in the final was low qualifier Chip Woodall, driving Gene Snow's dragster. Olson was late off the line in their final round meeting and his 6.73/223.32 lost to Woodall's 6.81/218. Carls's best NHRA speed was in Indy eliminations at 230.17. |

Notes: Car started the year in this livery, but had the Revell colors on the car by Ontario at the end of the year. Carl was the number one qualifier at the 1973 NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.086/233.16, but lost in the second round when Jim Bucher beat him and set the national record with a 6.079/236.22. Newspaper account in Salt Lake City promoting the Division 7 race in August credits Carl with a best of 6.05 in 1973. We need to confirm where that occurred. 8.38 Pomona, 6.08 Gainsville, 6.41 Columbus, 6.15 Englishtown, 6.09 Indy where he qualifed 6.161 227.84, 6.11 (Qualified 6.161 227.84), Ontario- MG |

Notes: Confirmed 5.94 at Bakersfield on March 10/1974, was the 14th entry into the Cragar Five Second Club. We need to confirm the 5.91. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Car was running a Donovan at Columbus and at Ontario. Ran 6.34 at Gainesville, 6.03 at Columbus, 6.49 at Gainesville, 6.09 at Indy, 6.04 at Ontario. | Carl failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 6.04/230.17 and went on to win over the 32-car field. In the first round his 6.04/236.22 beat Rick Ramsey while a 5.94 (Low ET) in round two got him into the Cragar Five Second club and took out Dwight Hughes. He won a close one over Frank Bradley in round three where his 6.10/217 beat Bradley's slightly quicker 6.09/232. He soloed in the semifinals when Gary Beck was unable to show and in the final he again got to make an easy pass when Tony Nancy was shut off on the line with a broken oil line. |

Notes: Just 17 years old, high school senior Hazel drove for the first time in a race at Sanford on Sep. 11. She was the only woman entrant in the race and was eliminated in the semi-finals of her class. It was exciting enough that she returned to race again a few weeks later. On Oct. 2 at Sanford, she got runner-up in the stock class with 75.26 mph. Photo: Biddeford Journal Tribune, Sep. 15, 1955 -- MB |
