Notes: On this car's very first run, we set a new track record at Detroit for ET and mph. We raced at 14 events in 1971 and set track records at 11 of the 14 events. Later that year, I had the worst funny car fire in the history of drag racing to that point at Lebanon Valley, NY. I was burned over 60 percent of my body. I needed skin grafts, etc. I was laid up for a year. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15 |

Notes: Ray built another car and was going to drive it himself. He asked me to come to Memphis for the first race. But we decided that it was better if I drove the car and so I did after being laid up for a year. In addition to qualifying at Indy 9/72 with a 6.533/224.43, we ran 6.48, 6.46, and 6.44 at OCIR at the Manufacturer's Race in 1972. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15 | Duane broke at the OCIR Mfg. Meet 1972 against Jim Dunn (from the movie Funny Car Summer). Low ETs for the meet were Billy Meyer at 6.51 and Ron Colson at 6.57, and they met in the final). We need to validate the actual race where Duane ran the 6.40s. ET Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 10/72 |

Notes: Third Woody Gilmore car. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 6.47 at 221 for this car in 1973. | We ran back to back 6.30s at 235 at Englishtown 1973, match racing Jungle Jim. This was just the 426 Ramchargers motor, not the 475 inch Ed Pink stroker. We could not make that bigger motor run as well as the smaller Rams motor, although the Snake, Ray Beadle, Pat Foster, and others had luck with it. We had two Ed Pink motors, but ran a tenth and a half slower than the 426. We ran high 6.30s at NY National. We ran 6.39 at Detroit. Then the Ramchargers came out and ran 6.38 to get the track record back. Then we came out and ran 6.36 to take it back again. I stopped racing at the end of 1973. I had developed some ulcer problems and that ended my deal. Too much living out a suitcase and not eating right, etc. Had a chance to race for Mazmanian a year later when Danny Ongais went IndyCar racing, but was having too much fun with my young son and stayed out. Ended up driving display rigs for Mr. Gasket and Bob Glidden, but that was as close as I got to the action again. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15 | Best NHRA national event times of 6.699/214.28 at the 1973 Supernationals. |

Notes: Danny was at Fontana on March 21. He had the only gas-powered car there, and he ran warm-up runs of 8.85/184.04 and 8.83/184.80. A third run netted him an 8.77/185.18. Since the TF field was short, he agreed to run TF. In the first round, he cut a good light, and his 8.82/185.18 held of Gene Mooneyham's car at a better 8.77/192.30. In the semi-final, his 8.73/184.80 lost to eventual winner Don Moody's 8.79/193. Car name from 1964 NHRA Winternationals entry list. |

Notes: Danny started the season at Riverside for the KFWB Festival on January 1. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #8 with an 8.00/196.50. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.99/193.54 against eventual winner Jack Williams. He did much better the next day (January 2) at Fontana for the UDRA race. It was a two-day race run on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.78. Another 7.78 at 194.80 beat Bill Leavitt's 7.89/187 in the first round. In round two, he picked up to a 7.72/198.66 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Rick Stewart. In the semifinals, he eased it through with an 8.16/148.51 when Merek Chertkow fouled in John Smyser's car. In the final, he faced Tom McEwen. Ongais got the victory with a 7.80/192.30 over McEwen's runner-up 8.02/198. The following day, they did it again. Ongais ran 7.71/194.38, 7.75/193.54, and 7.72/196.50 over Doug Robinson, Jeep Hampshire, and Mike Sorokin to meet McEwen in the final for the second time in two days. Once again, the results were the same, with Danny getting the win, only this time the "Mongoose" fouled. He won at Carlsbad on April 24, earning the sit-out position for Sunday's final round by beating Bobby Tapia, Rick Stewart, and Mike Snively. In that order. He then went up against Dick Lechien in the final and won with a 7.55/207.36. Bucksdown 4 car. Also ran 7.59 at Carlsbad 4/25/65 (National Record) and 7.75 at AHRA Beeline 1965. | Photo: 1965 Hot Rod Magazine Championships, Riverside, after a 7.64/202.70 mph run - MB |

Notes: Ongais was one of the best "raw" drivers. He was never "rattled" and seldom fouled. If your car was down on hp, he more than made up for it on the line with his starting line prowess. Danny won more at Carlsbad than anywhere else. On July 1, he was there for an eight-car show, which he won with a 7.58/205.00 (Low ET and Top Speed) in beating Tommy Allen in the final. The following day, he went to Irwindale for another eight-car show. His 7.72 in qualifying failed to make the show, but Steve Carbone qualified but broke, so Danny took his place. He improved to 7.68/200.88 in the opening round to beat Paul Sutherland's 7.98/190. Tom McEwen fouled against him in the semifinal, and a 10.19/150.00 advanced. He faced John Mulligan in the final, and Ongais fouled while Mulligan ran 7.64 for the win. On July 9, he was back at Irwindale for another eight-car show. A 7.53/203.60 defeated Bob Mayer in round one, and he beat Herb Ries with another 7.53 at 201.34 in the semifinal. He lined up next to Mulligan for the second week in a row for the title. This time, a broken clutch kept him from giving Mulligan a race. He was doing well at the weekly TF shows, but the wins were eluding him, even at Carlsbad on August 5, where, although his 8.11/191.08 in the semifinal had won when Jeep Hampshire broke, a blown engine kept him from lining up against Allen in the final. At Indy, for the NHRA Nationals, he ran 7.49/207.36 to qualify #6. On Sunday, he ran 7.57/181.08 in the opening round to beat McEwen's 7.81/201. In the second round, Marvin Schwartz's better 7.41/207 lost to Ongais' 7.47/210.76. In the semifinal, the "Ramchargers" car driven by Don Westerdale failed to fire, so Danny advanced to the final against Don Prudhomme. A quick 7.46/207.36 beat the "Snake's" 7.60/197 and gave Ongais the sit-out position to race the winner of Monday's eliminations. The "Hawaiian," with Mike Snively driving, won the title on Monday and then beat Ongais for the Nationals title, 7.32/215 to 7.448/208.32, after Danny fouled. Shortly after that (September 16), he was at Carlsbad, where he set Low ET before fouling against Leroy Goldstein in the semifinal. The following day was not a good one. He was at Irwindale for an eight-car show, and after running a 7.62/172, the engine "let go." The dragster ran over engine parts, got sideways, and then rolled through the lights. The chassis broke into three pieces, with the roll cage staying intact. Ongais was alright, but the car was history. Tom Hanna body. |

Notes: Ongais was at Irwindale on January 8 for an eight-car show. He qualified #3 at 7.38/205.94. In the opening round of competition, his 7.43/207.36 beat Tommy Allen, but another 7.43 at 211.26 lost to Bob Muravez's 7.44/200. At the AHRA Winternationals, over 100 cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car field. Ongais' 7.75 qualified #7. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 7.63/202.70 lost to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's 7.81/181. Shortly after that, he went back to Irwindale for another eight-car show. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round, against Jeep Hampshire. Then Danny went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.34/207.84 qualified #6 in the 32-car field, and in round one, his 7.42/197.36 defeated Jimmy Nix's 7.52/205. He ran his best time of the weekend, a 7.27 at 211.26 in beating Hank Clark's 7.41/209 in round two. Ongais got a "freebie" in the third round when Jim Bollinger shut off on the line, and Danny advanced with a 10.38/85.30. He and Gene Goleman had a really close race in the semifinals that saw both drivers run 7.29 (Ongais at 210.76), but Goleman got the win. A week later (February 12), he was back at Irwindale. His 7.12/214.78 qualified #1, but he fouled against Mie Snively, who was driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He did not compete at the Bakersfield March Meet, which was at that time held on February 19. Instead, he chose to go to Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open held on the same weekend. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he soloed as Don Cook failed to show. He lost to Mike Sorokin in the second round, who was driving the second of the two "Hawaiian" cars. On March 15, Carlsbad held an eight-car show that had 23 cars attempt to qualify. Danny qualified #6 with a big speed of 215.30. A 7.21/201.34 beat Muravez's 7.37 in the opening round. But the car broke on the run, and he could not return for the semifinal. Danny ran a best of 7.247/208.80 at NHRA Indy. | Tom "Surfer" Jobe retired from H.O.W., fabricated modern-day racing bikes into his 70s. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Ongais was at Irwindale for an eight-car show on January 28. He ran a 7.22/211.26 to qualify #7. In the first round, he lost to John Mitchell's 7.19 when he lost a head gasket and slowed to a 7.57. Danny was the second alternate at the Pomona Winternationals at 7.29/220.58. That was his only NHRA national event this year. On March 3, he was at the PDA Championships at OCIR, but he failed to reach the late rounds. He was back at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on April 6, but his 7.55/214.78 lost to John Mulligan's 7.00/222 in the first round. |

Notes: Danny Ongais had gained fame as a top-ranked dragster driver. Mickey Thompson was well-known as a racer, track operator, and car owner. In 1969, the pair debuted a new lightweight transition style chassis Mustang. Pat Foster built the blue 427 SOHC-powered Mustang and a red twin that he drove himself. The team was awesome that year. They won many national events with the car, and Ongais ran a 6.96/204.73 at Kansas City. The team only lasted two years. Foster crashed in Dallas, and Ongais went on to different rides by the end of 1970. The state-of-the-art Mustang was outdated by 1970 due to the new, lighter, dragster-style chassis other teams were debuting. Confirmed 7.264/203.61 at Indy for the best NHRA National event times. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Dennis Doubleday). Video link cites 6.96/207 bests for 1969. Confirmed 7.22 at Rockingham. | This was the car to beat in '69. Ford money, one of the best crew chiefs/mechanics ever in Amos Satterlee who knew his way around the complex SOHC Ford motor, and master handler Ongais behind the wheel. This was the second car in a two-car team put together by Mickey Thompson. This was the blue car while Pat Foster handled the red one. The cars debuted at the AHRA Winternationals in primer wearing only a large Mickey Thompson decal on the doors. The cars showed promise right off the bat, with Ongais qualifying ninth and beating Don Schumacher in the first round, and Ray Alley in the second before losing to Dick Harrell's 7.75 in the semifinal. At the NHRA Winternationals, the tricky Pomona track gave the team some problems, failing to qualify. Ongais rebounded nicely by qualifying third with a 7.62/176.47 at the second OCIR All-Pro on February 9. He was on his way to a sub 7.4 run in the first round, when his engine let go at the first mph light. Still, his 7.60 at a coasting 160.42 beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.69/191. The team was unable to run the semifinals, and Jim was reinstated. The first win came the following week, on February 16, in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. He beat Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 7.59/189.47, and in the semis, a 7.88/193.96 beat Schumacher. He was paired up against his teammate Pat Foster in the other MT car in the final. He set both ends of the track record in the final with a 7.51/199.11 taking the victory. Then came the Bakersfield March Meet, where a 7.63 qualified #1. His first-round 7.80/196.07 beat Dave Beebe's 7.97/185 in the Super Chief. Tom McEwen set Top Speed while losing to Danny in the semifinal, with a 7.78/196.73 losing to the Mustang's 7.70/195.65. In the final, he met Rich Siroonian and won again with a 7.56 (Low ET) at 193.54. Another win came the following week on March 9 at the Sears Point National Open, where he again had Low ET (7.62) and Top Speed (195.64). This time the team gained fans due to Mickey Thompson's sportsmanship. Ongais was to face Marv Eldridge in the final, but Marv's Corvette lost fire on the line. Thompson signaled to Danny to kill the engine in his Mustang. So, while Ongais waited, Mickey helped Eldridge's crew refire the Corvette. Once it started, Danny refired and promptly beat him for the victory. The crowd roared their approval. He again ran well at the HRM Championships on March 16 at Riverside by qualifying #1 with a 7.60. He improved to a Low ET of the meet 7.50/180.00 over Roger Wolford in the first round, but the car broke a blower manifold while taking the win. The team tried hard to repair for round two, but time ran out. Wolford was reinstated with the break rule in effect. At the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 29, a 7.58/193.96 qualified #1. An even better 7.53/192.70 beat Randy Walls in the first round. In the semifinal, both he and Schumacher ran 7.71, but Don had crossed the centerline, advancing Ongais into the final against Charlie Allen. A blown transmission ended Danny's chances for a win. On April 13, Irwindale held an eight-car show, and once again, Ongais qualified on top of the heap with a 7.48 that held for Low ET. A first-round 7.63/184.80 beat Walls and Clyde Morgan lost a transmission against him in the semis, giving Danny a single into the final. A 7.88/191.08 beat Steve Bovan's 8.19/182 Camaro in the final. A sixteen-car show was held at Irwindale on April 26, where Ongais qualified #1 with a 7.48/181.08. He set a 7.30 track record at just 177.86 over Bob Pickett in the first round. A 7.47/191.48 beat Ray Alley in round two, and another 7.47 over Morgan put him in the final. In the final, a 7.37/193.54 beat Mike Van Sant's 8.01/181 in the Invader. At the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open at OCIR on May 3, a 7.45/191.88 qualified #1 on the four-car Ford team. The 7.45 was also good for Low ET of the meet. In the first round, a 7.55/192.30 beat Siroonian's 7.61/194. Mike Van Sant took a win over the Mustang when Ongais lost a motor on the line in round two. With a new engine in place, a third-round 8.20/161 beat the Psycho. The two lowest ET cars raced for the overall win at this meet. In the final, he faced Siroonian again, and a 7.88/188 took the win as Rich's 'Cuda broke. Drag News reported that Ongais drove to 7.10 and backed it up with a 7.12 in California. This was done using a new kind of oxygen injection system that had caused the team to go through 37 engines. It was not reported at what track these times were run, but it was in early May. On May 18, he was at Kansas City for a four-car, round-robin race. Danny won by setting a 7.37 track record at 196 to beat Ron O'Donnell in Don Schumacher's 'Cuda in the first race while a 7.42 beat Norm Weekly driving Chris Karamesines' new car. He beat the "Assassination" in his last race with a 7.52. Ongais finished runner-up to Gas Ronda at an Funny Car show at Fremont in May. On June 8, he qualified second with a 7.64 at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He won the race when the Low ET and Top Speed of the meet (7.52/202.70) car of Leonard Hughes fouled against him in the final. Danny motored to a 7.78 for the win. The team had a major blow at the NHRA Springnationals; the MT teams qualified one and two with Pat Foster's amazing 7.35 (track record) at 199.55 leading while Ongais followed with a 7.47/189. Foster's car veered into Gerry Schwartz's car in the first round, and crashed, killing Gerry and totaling both cars. Ongais went on to win the race running 7.77/173.07 and 7.64/190.27 in the first two rounds. In the semis, Ray Alley fouled, and Ongais ran a 7.57 to advance to the final against Tom McEwen. McEwen broke a rear end in the final, and a 7.63/191.89 gave Danny another win. On June 21, it was on to Lions for the AHRA Grand American Championships. Ongais reset the AHRA Funny Car record to a 7.35 in qualifying, as well as Top Speed of the meet at 198.97. He beat Larry Fullerton in the first round, with a 7.36/196.07 and a 7.40/193.96 beat Gordon Mineo in the semifinal. He was to meet Mike Van Sant for the money, but the race was never run due to the late hour. At Irwindale's Fourth of July race, a 7.44 qualified #1, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.39/198.66 over Van Sant's 7.60/194 in the Invader. In the final, he beat Fullerton with a 7.43/192.70. The next day (July 5), he went to OCIR for the second annual Nitro Championships, where he qualified #1 with a 7.52, ran a first-round 7.40, beat Ronda's 7.84/195 with a 7.49/191.48 in round two, and in the semis a 7.62/200.00 beat Clyde Morgan's 7.78/187. In the final, he met Fullerton again. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet (7.35/200.44) won the race over Larry's 7.88/183. The following week saw more of the same for the competition. At Irwindale's Race with a Reason on July 12, Ongais won again. About the only new news was that he didn't qualify first. He ran a first-round 7.50/178.75 solo pass when Leroy Hales broke on the line. A 7.42 (Low ET) at 192.72 beat Van Sant in the semifinal. Dave Beebe, driving John Mazmanian's 'Cuda, broke in the final, and Danny ran a 7.78/188.66 for the win. Right around this time, the Mustang was reworked with the SOHC motor moved back farther in the chassis and raised slightly. The first time out with the new configuration was on July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Championships. A 7.63 qualified the team second to Beebe's 7.56. Both cars made their way to the final, with Beebe hitting a meet's best of 7.38 along the way. Danny was running 7.60s, with the best being a 7.61. In the final, Ongais picked it up to a 7.55/193.54 but lost to Beebe's 7.45/205. This was the first time the Mustang was outrun in competition since the Winternationals. On July 26, the team ran at the Irwindale Funny Car Open, and Danny got beat again. He qualified second and beat Warren Gunter, who had driveline problems in the first round. But in the semifinal, Ongais shut off with handling problems, and Gas Ronda's 7.76/192 advanced to the final. At the three-day Super Stock Nationals, Danny won Saturday's Funny Car race (even though the last rounds were run on Sunday). He beat Ed Schartman with a 7.75/193. He ran a match race against Bob Manion at Kansas City on August 17 and won all three races with a 7.56/191.08 best. AHRA held their World Championships at Green Valley on August 24. The MT team was there, running a first-round 7.65 over Fritz Callier's 7.82. In the second round, he lost a motor in the eyes while losing to Siroonian, who was back in uncle John's 'Cuda. Siroonian's chute failed on the run, and his car was damaged. At Bristol for the All-American race, AHRA held an Funny Car race in qualifying for the actual show that was to be run the next day. In that race, Danny singled with a 7.68/171.75 in the first round, before beating Jim Maybeck with a 7.93 in the second round. He fouled against Ronnie Runyan in the semis. The next day for the actual race, he again made it as far as the semis where both he and Jim Maybeck ran 7.89, but Jim got there first. Ongais took his biggest win of the year at the US Nationals. The team went through three engines in qualifying before getting in a 7.306/201.79 for #4. He followed the 'Cudas of Hughes, Schumacher, and Siroonian. He improved on his time with a first-round 7.264/201.34. In the second round, a 7.380/191.08 beat Kelly Chadwick, and in the most crowd-pleasing race of the Funny Car Eliminator, met Bruce Larson in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Bruce fouled away a 7.420/201.78 while Danny's 7.276/203.61 got into the final against Siroonian. In the final, Siroonian fouled away a 7.246/204.08 to let the Mustang take a 7.476/195.65 victory pass. The following week, on September 14, at a match race at Kansas City, Danny made four runs: a 7.21, 7.11 twice, and a 6.96 to become the first Funny Car in the sixes. It was controversial, though, because it was run at Kansas (later known for questionable times), and the fact that the car never again got near the sixes. The car usually ran 7.20s as best times. On September 20, Danny showed up at OCIR during the Division 7 points race and reset the NHRA Funny Car records to 7.37/198.67. Two other funny cars were also trying for the record, Siroonian and Charlie Allen. A week later (September 27), the team was at Rockingham for the AHRA US Open. On Saturday, AHRA decided to hold an eight-car preliminary Funny Car show. In the opening round, Danny's 7.28 defeated Butch Hicks, driving the "King 'Cuda." He then won his semifinal match to meet with Gene Snow in the final. If there had been a question of had the rest of the Funny Car troops caught up with the MT team, it was answered here as Snow's 7.13/213 easily covered Ongais' 7.22/201.34. The next day, Ongais ran 7.28 in the opening round for the actual race before his 7.34/195.65 lost to Mart Higginbotham's 7.33/199 in round two. |

Notes: This is actually the '69 car that Danny had great success with. A '70 grill, new paint, but still a 427 SOHC power plant. Not as much success in 1970. See Barb's comments on the '69 car. Ongais started the '70 season at Irwindale for their New Year's Day race, where he qualified fifth with a 7.55 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 7.58/190.66 beat a crossed-up Marv Eldridge. He ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196.92 over Tom Grove's 7.71/194.38. Danny's motor blew in the semifinal, and the car caught fire on a 7.71/178.92 pass losing to Johnny Wright in another Mickey Thompson Mustang. Danny was OK other than some minor leg burns, and the car had minor damage. On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, he cooked his motor in the first round, while waiting for teammate Arnie Behling in M/T's Maverick to stage. He finally ran and won with a 7.61 over the ailing Maverick. A second-round 7.90 beat a sleepy Gene Snow at 7.66. Unfortunately, Ongais was unable to make the semis, and Snow was reinstated. He qualified second at NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53 but lost in round two. An eight-car show was run at Irwindale on February 15, and a 7.65 qualified Danny second. A first-round 7.68/189.06 beat Mike Miller's out-of-shape Dart. In the semis, a 7.52/195.94 beat Gordon Mineo, and in the final, Ken Safford cracked off a 7.35/197 over Ongais' 7.60/169.81. He suffered a rare first-round loss on February 22 at the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22 when Dave Beebe's 7.41/189 beat his 7.69/193.54. Ongais beat Prudhomme with a 7.25/201 to win the Lions AHRA meet. This was the meet where Don Garlits trans exploded, and he lost part of his foot. Because the lights were damaged, the funny car final used a flag starter. At Fremont, Ongais set a 208.32 track record. Another win came over an eight-car field on March 14 at OCIR for the blue Mustang's last win. A first-round 7.60/193.96 advanced when low qualifier Mike Van Sant lost oil pressure and shut off on the line. A semifinal 7.72/193.13 beat Steve Bovan, who lost an engine. In the final, a 7.61/187.50 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.09/176.12. OCIR held its final All-Pro race on March 28, and Ongais ran a first-round 8.37/113.63 easing up over a fouling Leroy Hales. Up against Tom McEwen in round two, he lost fire, and Gunter's VW was called in on the break rule to replace him. On April 18 at OCIR for another eight-car show, Danny qualified with a 7.39/182.18. He beat Bob Pickett (8.37/182) in the first round, with a 7.61/184.80. In the semifinal, a broken fuel pump drive ended his chances. Arnie Behling crashed and totaled the car at Lions soon after. Best NHRA National event speed 199.11, but in this car? |

Notes: Original Carl Casper Show Car, the Young American, driven by Danny Ongais to a 6.490/225.00 bests at Indy in 1970, sits in the Kruse Museum in Auburn, Indiana (as of 2010, photo by Rick Howard). Car set Lions track ET record in '70 with a 6.51. Also won 1971 AHRA Winternats. Note - The Young American was once stolen from Keith Black's shop, and for a long time, rumors and innuendos would abound. No one knew the whereabouts of the rig until Brotherhood of LA Street Racers very own Big Willy Robinson stepped in and recovered everything intact. No questions asked. Carl Casper (custom auto king) Racing Team consisted of Leland Kolb, John Kranenberg, Danny Ongais, Gary Cochran, and Don Culp. Indy 6.490 was half of the quickest side-by-side race at the time (Prudhomme 6.438). | Danny qualified #2 at Ontario 11/21/70 at 6.689/216.34 and ran as quick as 6.567/220.04 in going a few rounds. The Indy times were the best NHRA national event numbers for this car in 1970. |

Notes: Sponsored by Cox Models, which produced a 1/12th-scale version of the dragster, Ongais enlisted Dan "Buzz" Broussard to tune the car. With a Youngblood caricature declaring "Death to Rear Eng Cars" painted on the Tom Hanna bodywork, it was clear that Danny preferred the slingshot design. Originally, there was no wing over the engine; that was added in 1972. - JM |

Notes: If there's one thing you can say about John Mazmanian's cars, it's that they were clean. His cars were like works of art. Polished and gleaming like they were going to a car show. But you couldn't let that fool you, as they were always fast. It's a bit surprising that Mazmanian's trade was a rubbish contractor in Los Angeles. Only running Funny Cars since '68, John had his nephew, Rich Siroonian, drive as well as Wendell Shipman, Arnie Behling, and Mike Snively. But for the '72 season, he hired Danny Ongais. Back in '69, it seemed like every weekend, the Mickey Thompson Mustang, with Ongais behind the wheel, was facing Siroonian in "Big John's" car in a final. Now Mazmanian had Danny on his team. The car didn't debut until June and used a 112" Woody Gilmore chassis. The engine was a Keith Black-built 426 Hemi. It was stroked to 472. Black liked his Engle cams; of course, one was used in this car. The GMC-6/71 was overdriven 33% and was set up by Don Hampton. Enderle injection sat on top. A Lenco two-speed transmitted the power back to a Halibrand quick-change rear. Don Kirby was responsible for the paint. Joining Ongais on the team as the crew chief was Ray Zeller. The 'Cuda weighed 1,800 lbs. An early run with the car netted the team a 6.38. Danny was at Fremont on July 16 for its Summer Championships. The car ran well, but his 6.66/222.76 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.62/203. The second quickest car in the sport after Foster & Setzer in 1972. The run came against Foster's 6.30, making it the quickest side by-sider to date at that time. (And the 225 was paired with Foster's 235.60, making it the FASTEST side by sider as well.) Also ran 6.515/225.56 at Indy Nationals 9/72 and 6.75 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/72. Danny was the number two qualifier at 6.38 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2. He broke in the first round against Bill Leavitt. |

Notes: Former John Mazmanian car. Danny Ongais continued to run it. The 'Cuda body was replaced by a Mustang sometime during the year. The team qualified #1 for the Ford team at the OCIR Manufacturer's race. His 6.68 was the lowest qualifying ET of all the teams. Danny attempted to qualify at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals, but his 6.699/214.28 best failed to make the show. Shortly after that, he was at Beeline for a sixteen-car AHRA show. Danny's 6.65/197.36 qualified #1, but an off-pace 7.36/127.47 in the opening round lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.52/218. | Vel Miletich, a Torrance car dealer, and Parnelli Jones, a Torrance native who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1963, were partners in VPJ enterprises. - Shav Glick-1998 |

Notes: The Wedge, aka The Flying Doorstop. Danny was at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere in January. He qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.61. An opening round 6.46/217.39 beat James Warren's 6.44. In the second round, he blew his engine and lost to John Stewart. He was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.80/226.70 to qualify #3 in the 32-car field. He lost to Clayton Harris in the opening round. At the third OCIR All-Pro race, he qualified #2 with a 6.39 behind Don Moody's 6.30. Ongais improved his qualifying time by a tenth in the first round, where his 6.29/234.98 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.40/210. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.23/236.84 to beat Frank Prock. He won the race by beating Don Moody in the final with a 6.43/227.27. Surprisingly, the team did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, but they were at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Danny qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field and a quick-leaving 6.48/227.84 beat Rick Ramsey's 6.41/225 in the first round. But a tire-smoking 7.85/140 lost to Warren's 6.20/224 in the next round. Shortly after that, he was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. The final event featured sixteen-car fields. His 6.52 qualified #10, and he was still in the hunt for being the OCIR All-Pro Top Fuel points champion. That went out the window when his 6.88/212.26 lost in the opening round to Warren's 6.49/212. Early in April, he competed in the Las Vegas Open. It was an eight-car show, and although he won his first-round race against Bob Noice with a 6.66, he smoked the pistons and could not return for the semifinals. |
