Notes: Jack failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals. He was attempting a qualifying run on Friday, and he went into hard tire shake that knocked him unconscious. The car continued down the track at idle, going into the opposite lane and hitting the guardrail. Jack was OK, and the car wasn't heavily damaged. Things went much better at the Gatornationals, where his 5.76/240.00 qualified #6. He had problems in the first round, and slowed to a 7.73 that lost to Gene Snow's 5.95. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, a 5.85/238.09 qualified on the "bump spot" of the eight-car field. He lost to Richard Tharp in the first round. He qualified #8 in the next eight-car show he ran as well. That came at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Jack ran a 5.91 for the spot. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round, again, this time to Connie Kalitta. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified last for the eight-car show, and in the opening round, he lost to Denver Schutz. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.05/229.57.

Notes: With IHRA dropping Top Fuel for '84, Ostrander had a lot fewer races to run. Only sixteen cars showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Jack qualified lat with a 6.413/196.50. He shut off against Chris Karamesines in the opening round of eliminations. He went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field; his best of 6.008/228.42 was the third alternate. He competed at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he qualified #6 and lost to Dick Lahaie in the opening round. Jack ran 6.42/231 at ADRA Dragway 42 in August. Notes: Ostrander started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His career-best, 5.55/250.34, qualified #13. In the opening round, his 5.68/254.59 lost to Dick Lahaie's 5.30/263. Things didn't go as well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was the sixth alternate at 5.79/203.85. He ran a new career-best during qualifying at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.45/260.79 qualified #7. He had problems in round one, but not as many as Hank Endres, and Jack advanced with a 7.20/118.01. In round two, his off-pace 6.09/193.46 lost to Lahaie's 5.38/263. He had nothing but trouble at Baton Rouge, and the best he could muster in qualifying for the NHRA Cajun Nationals was 7.50/113.36. He obviously failed to qualify. Columbus was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Springnationals. Ostrander qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen car field with a 5.70/247.18. He improved to 5.63/254.52 in the first round, but he was late off the line and still lost to Gene Snow's 5.67/251. In Ennis Fall, Jack was one half of the fastest side-by-side run in history (his 277.43 to Gary Ormsby's 280.28) during qualifying on a 5.295 pass (#10). In round one, he surprised Joe Amato with a new personal best ET, 5.253/275.65 to 7.02/99. Gary Ormsby took a close 5.22/280 to 5.292/277.09 decision over Jack in round two.

Notes: Jack qualified #14 with a 5.31/258.39 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Lori Johns in the first round, with another 5.31 at 275.81. He lost to the eventual winner Gary Ormsby in the second round. Jack went to Darlington for IHRA's Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.24. He advanced past the first-round when Jack Revelle broke on the burnout. But in the semifinal of the eight-car show, it was Ostrander who broke, giving Bob Strauss a free ride into the final. Notes: Jack was in New York in the first week of July for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 5.44/263.31 qualified #7, and he improved to 5.27/276.49 in the opening round to beat alternate Steve Litton's 5.52/254. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and could not return for his semi-final race against Eddie Hill. The following week he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.09/283.01 qualified #15, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.04 at 274.80 in the first round to beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein. The car broke a rear end in round two, and he had to watch Cory McClenathan solo into the semi-final at 5.01/281. Near the end of the month, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.38/267.61. Ed McCulloch's 5.05/271 in the first round sent his 6.00/164.47 home early. Shortly after that, he was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.08/280.63 qualified #13, but McCulloch dropped him in the first round again. He improved on his best at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, where a 5.03/280.81 qualified #12. Jack qualified on the bump at the 1992 US Nats at 5.066. Notes: Jack ran an excellent 4.858/290.32 to qualify #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he ran 4.93/286.80 but lost to a quick-leaving Tony Pedregon at 4.97/289. At the second race of the year, the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #11 with a 4.95/288.18. In the first round, he broke. Jack continued to qualify well at the third NHRA race of the season, the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston, where he ran 4.86/290.79 to qualify #6. He out-qualified the likes of Kenny Bernstein, Joe Amato, and Eddie Hill. But in the first round, he overpowered the track, smoked the tires, and lost to Mike Dunn's 4.90/287. At Gainesville, he had all kinds of problems when a frame rail broke in qualifying. The car broke in two and was totaled, but he was ok. A earlier pass of 4.92/268.89 had qualified him in the #12 spot but he obviously was unable to run in eliminations. By April, he showed up at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he ended up as the sixth alternate at 5.19/251.67. Things went better at Memphis, where Jack's 5.06/273.22 qualified on the "bump". In the first round, his 5.14/272.64 fell to low qualifier Scott Kalitta's 4.98/282. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats.

Notes: Jack was at Alabama International in June for the IHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.66/185.26 ended up as the second alternate for the eight-car field. He did much better at the IHRA Empire Nationals held early in July. There his 5.25/271.24 qualified #2. But his 5.57/246.71 in the first round, lost to Doug Herbert's 5.27/270. Jack ran a number of 5.0s at 290 plus in NHRA competition, but that was not enough to qualify for most events this year. His best times were 5.029 at Houston and 291.54 at Indy.

Notes: Ostrander started his season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was just an eight-car field (as all IHRA TF events were). Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. He ran much better at IHRA's second race of the season, the Supernationals held at Alabama International. His 5.19/277.26 advanced in the opening round when Rhonda Hartman lost a blower belt. A 5.28/272.14 in the semi-final defeated David Grubnic. He lost to Clayton Harrs in the final. He made the trip to Atlanta for his first NHRA race of the year, the Southern Nationals. He ended up as the fourth alternate with a 5.14/286.35 best. He also went to Memphis in the first week of May for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He was the second alternate there at 5.27/263.08.
