Notes: Chapman Automotive built the 120" frame for the car. The Camaro body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used an early 354 Hemi that kept its stock displacement. A factory crank was used along with M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Isky supplied the cam. An Enderle injection unit sat on the 18% overdriven blower that rested on a Cragar intake manifold. The car was run on 70% nitro. An estimated 1,200 hp was on tap. John Hogan helped maintain the engine. A Torqueflite transmission was used that fed the power back to a Ford rear axle carrying 3.90 gears. The car weighed 2,120 lbs. The cost of the project was $15,000. O'Donnell was at Gary, Indiana, for a UDRA Circuit race in August. Going into the race, he held both ends of the track record at 8.07/181. By the end of this race, he would not hold either. His 8.10/180.00 beat Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler," who blew a transmission in the first round. In the semi-final, he ran 8.11, but he lost to Doug Cook's 8.01 in the "Stone, Woods & Cooke" Mustang. Ron drove the car to 7.85/193 at Union Grove. Notes: Ron was at Gary, Indiana, for the AHRA Mid-West Nationals on August 11. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.95/155.39 advanced when Dick Loehr lost fire. In the semifinals, he needed only an 8.55/179.21 to advance when Huston Platt fouled. Unfortunately, his good luck ended in the final, where he lost to Dick Harrell. A couple of days later (August 13), he was at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet race. Here, he had no luck as he blew a transmission in his race against Mel Perry in the first round.

Notes: On June 2, Ron was driving the "Mr. Norm" car at US 30 in Gary, Indiana, for its East vs. West race. It was a six-car show that had all the cars run three rounds. Ron didn't do too well as he lost all three of his races. In the first race, both he and Dick Harrell ran 8.25 (Ron at 173), but Harrell crossed the stripe first. In the second race, his 8.30/176 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.80/183; in the last race, his 8.20/147 fell to Lyle Fisher's 7.97/181.

Notes: Ron was driving this car on April 25 in Gary, Indiana, for the Mr. Chevrolet USA race. Six cars ran, and all made two passes. In Ron's first race, his 7.70/204 beat an ailing Dick Harrell at 8.18. Then the US 30 clocks started to play games. In the second race, his 7.52 lost to Randy Walls' 7.42. But he posted a speed reading of 218, tying Roger Lindamood's track record. Those speeds were both likely bogus. But O'Donnell came back out for a consolation race and ran an even more unbelievable 7.63/224.36 to beat Harrell. The track claimed that it was a new world speed record for FCs. Unfortunately, the time was clearly inaccurate. On May 9, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the Chevy Funny Car Championships. In the first round, he got out of shape and shut off to 8.76/154.90, losing to Terry Hedrick's 7.68/196. He came back out later for a consolation race where his 7.90/182.00 beat a non-firing Clare Sanders in the "Super Camaro." Ron ran 7.81 at Rockingham, NC.

Notes: Ron started the '71 season at Irwindale's New Year's Funny Car Festival. It was a sixteen-car show and he qualified #2 with a 7.06/205.94 in the "Fighting Irish." A 7.27/202.70 beat Jim Liberman's quicker 7.23/202 in the first round, but in the second round, the Camaro lost an engine in the lights and lost to Stan Shiroma. He competed at the first OCIR All-Pro event. Ron ran 7.09/205.01 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen, but an off-pace 7.66/204.08 in the semifinal lost to Gene Snow's 6.96/201. Shortly after this, Dick Rosberg replaced him behind the wheel.

Notes: Ron set both ends of the NHRA national record in July when he ran 6.41/227.84 at Tri-City Dragway, Saginaw, Michigan. Although her name doesn't appear on the car, several period publications mention Myrna Gelfand as the owner. On the front spoiler of the L&M photo that I've included you'll notice it reads "Super Jewess presents the Kosher-Kuda," which is a reference to her. Also, Ron had a Division 7 competition number for much of 1972. He moved back to the Midwest by the end of the year and had a Division 3 comp number in 1973. Myrna Gelfand was Don Cook's sister. She was the money behind his funny cars. Gelfand was her married name. She was portrayed as a mystery woman handing out money to funny car teams at the time. The Cuda disappeared in Chicago. There was a repainting no one wanted to discuss. It turned up in Australia with a crushed roof, never to be seen again. - Norman Hechtkoff | Ron had been driving Funny Cars since they began. This was probably his best ride. His season in the car started in Jan at the second OCIR All-Pro race. It was a tough eight-car field to qualify in and O'Donnell made the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Leroy Chadderton driving the “Hawaiian" in the first round. Things went better at the third OCIR All-Pro where his 6.75 qualified #2 and he beat Sush Matsubara driving the "Pisano-Matsubara" Vega in the first round, with a 6.78. In the semifinals, he used a 6.71 to beat Dave Beebe's 6.84 who was driving Ray Alley's car. He went up against Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega in the final and Pat unleased Low ET and Top Speed to win with a 6.58/224 over Ron's 6.72/218.97. Another runner-up finish came at OCIR on March 11. There both he and Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse" had run 6.78 in their semifinal races. The final looked like it was a close one, but the "Damn Yankee" broke a rear giving Fullerton an easy victory. He competed at the final OCIR All-Pro where a sixteen-car field was featured. An opening round 6.92 beat the "King Rat" and in round two he got around Fullerton. But a 6.87/220.04 in the semifinal lost to Gary Burgin's 6.66/220. In April, Ron set Low ET at OCIR's Funny Car Bash with a 6.75, but he failed to reach the finals. He was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener where he qualified #4 in the eight-car field. An off-pace 7.33/191 lost to eventual winner Al Marshall's 6.63-in the first round.
