Notes: Rob qualified #16 at the Pomona Winters with a 16.163/62.61 as there were only 16 cars. He improved vastly in round one to 5.883/211.00 but lost to Doug Kalitta at 4.61/311. Rob also qualified #16 at Las Vegas Spring, going 5.624/223.88. His 14-second shutoff lost to Kenny Bernstein's 4.56/318 in round one. Rob was the first and only alternate at the summer Pomona 50th Anniversary race. He hit 13.51/57 there. Rob qualified #13 at the Mile High Nationals with a nice 5.154/232.15. He lost to Tony Schumacher in round one, 5.34/244 to 7.908/97.34. Rob was the first alternate in Memphis at 5.770/214.00. He was the third alternate at Joliet Fall at 5.749/182.90. Rob's best speed came in a second alternate effort at Ennis Fall, 5.346/263.77. Rob was the eighth and final alternate at the Las Vegas Fall event, hitting 8.345/90.89. Notes: The team did not race on the NHRA tour in 2015. They came out in 2016 for the Houston Spring race. Rob qualified #16 at a DQ time of 89.999 at 95.52. (Terry Haddock, the #15 qualifier, had the same ET but with a higher speed). Rob broke against Steve Torrence in round one. At Topeka, Rob also qualified on the bump with the same 89.999 time (at 47.03 mph). Again, the #15 qualifier, Smax Smith, got the same time but a higher slot due to a higher speed. Rob lost to Doug Kalitta in round one, 3.79/287 to 14.800/34.25. Rob showed some improvement at Bandimere, qualifying #15 at 4.959/168.81. He lost to Antron Brown in round one, 3.87/308 to an improved 4.396/208.91. At Brainerd, Rob got another 89.999 ET at 159.23. That got him the one and only DNQ slot. Does anybody know what constitutes a driver getting assigned an 89.999 ET?

Notes: Photo from 1985 Nationals. After football, Dan called Bobby Rowe (who he knew from racing hydroplane boats) and the team bought the Frank Taylor Dago Red fueler, but sold to Eddie Hill. Bought the former Kilpatrick & Connell car from Gene Snow because the cockpit was bigger. Debuted at Bakersfield 3/85 with a 5.76/245 qualifying pass. Lost to Ron Smith in round one, on a holeshot with both drivers running 5.91. Crew was Bobby Rowe, Donnie Couch and Larry Cook. Set a top fuel track record 5.88 seconds at Houston International Raceway in beating Buddy Warren in a match race. Lost to Ernie Hall in round one, at ADRA Spokane, running 5.882. Dan's best NHRA times were 5.607/251.25 at NHRA Englishtown. | Chassis was a long-in-the-tooth Swindahl, first run brand new with Kilpatrick/Connell/Tharp in '83, then Gene Snow in '84, then the "Quarterback Sneak" in '85.

Notes: Dan started the season by running a career-best (to this point) 5.52 at 256.41 to qualify #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He fouled away a 5.61 in the first round against Earl Whiting. He bettered his career-best in qualifying for the next NHRA event, the Gatornationals. There, he qualified #3 with a 5.48/254.09. A first-round 5.73/251.81 beat Shirley Muldowney's quicker 5.65/250. He soloed in round two with a 7.29/118.73 when Chris Karamesines could not run. In the semifinals, he had a great race with Don Garlits with "Big Daddy's" 5.50/272, winning over Dan's 5.49/256.95. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Pastorini got his first big NHRA win. He qualified #8 for the show with a 5.67/252.38, and he advanced past round one with a 7.54/101 when Jack Revelle broke a transmission. In round two, both he and Dick LaHaie smoked the tires, with Dan's 6.11/235.97 getting the win over Dick's 6.16/245. A 5.75/248.34 beat Bill Mullins' 5.78/256 in John Carey's car in the semifinals. In the final, he was up against that cagey veteran Gene Snow. The two left together, with Pastorini scoring the win with a 5.56/256.70 over the "Snowman's" 5.64/244. He got into another final at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet in May. A 5.54/243.90 qualified #2 in the eight-car show. He beat Bill Carter in round one with a 5.53, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Whiting could not run after losing an engine in the first round. In the final, Dan came up against Garlits. Once again, the "Old Man" got the win with a 5.40/271 over Pastorini's runner-up effort of 5.57/253. Dan didn't have a very productive outing at Baton Rouge in early June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.72/236.22, and in the first round, his 5.62/250.00 lost to Muldowney's 5.57/250. National Trail had 27 cars show up to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Dan qualified #11 with a 5.63/238.60 and, in the first round, got a measure of revenge over Garlits when his 5.69/234.31 beat Don's 5.73/251. In the second round, he beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.67/250 with a 5.60/242.39. Unfortunately, he hazed his tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 6.89/127, losing to eventual winner Connie Kalitta's 5.61/253. Pastorini traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.64/256.99. He lost to low qualifier Gwynn in the first round when his 5.92/254.09 finished second to Darrell's 5.43/265. One-half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at 1986 Gators, Garlits' 5.409 to Dan's 5.491. Dan qualified #10 at the World Finals with a 5.544/256.92. He lost to Joe Amato in round one.

Dan was also half of fastest side by side race in history at the 87 Gators with his 270.43 and Dick LaHaie's 271.00. Best standard NHRA event times were 5.259 Pomona Finals 87 and 271.16 at Gainesville 3/87. | Dan was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.39/269.94 qualified #4. An opening round 5.43/266.90 advanced when opponent Tim Morgan crashed. But in round two, the car failed to fire for his race against Darrell Gwynn. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Pastorini qualified #7 with a 5.42/266.58. He improved to 5.40/271.16 in the first round, to beat Richard Holcomb and in round two, his 5.45/270.43 beat Dick LaHaie’s quicker, but later 5.44/271. Dan made his best run of the weekend in the semifinals, where he ran 5.38/265.64, but it wasn't enough to beat Gwynn’s 5.24/269. The NHRA Winston All-Star race was held in April at the Texas Motorplex. Dan qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.31/267.77. He ran a 5.23/272.39 in the first round, to trailer Connie Kalitta's 5.33/269 and in the semifinals, he stopped Don Garlits with a 5.37/267.85. He faced LaHaie in the final. Dick had run 5.24 twice in eliminations. Rain kept the final from being run until a week and a half later (April 15). In their race, Dan smoked the tires to 6.86/175.16 while Dick got the victory with a 5.37/268. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.58/259.51 qualified #13 and the number proved unlucky as he lost to Garlits in the first round. On May 9, he was at Fremont (Baylands) for a best of three match race against Don Prudhomme. The Funny Car driver was given a 3-tenths handicap. The "Snake" won their first race with a 5.81/237 over Pastorini's 5.72/242. Dan won the second race with a 5.76/240.64 when Don fouled and shut off. In the deciding race, Prudhomme shut off with tire shake and Dan blew an engine, but his 6.65/144.69 rolled across the line first giving him the match race victory. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for its Spring race. It was another eight-car show and Dan's 5.85/238.72 qualified #5. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round race with low qualifier Frank Bradley. The two had a good race, but Bradley's 5.69/249 beat Dan's 5.75/250.00. NHRA’s next race was the Cajun Nationals held at Baton Rouge. A 5.56/254.45 qualified #8, but rain held up the event. He and opponent Gene Snow never showed for their first-round race as they both packed up and headed for Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. This was Pastorini's first IHRA event. Dan qualified #2 with a 5.60/257. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.52 at 254 that beat Bob Strauss. He continued to look strong in the semifinals, where his 5.53/258 beat Jerry Marconi. He faced Hank Endres in the final. Things looked good for the "Coors" car, but Dan had a bit of bad luck as the oil pump broke, giving Endres a solo for the title. He enjoyed his first IHRA race enough that the following week (June 7), he went to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. The field was short so he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.53/259.36. But in the semifinals, he once again had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving John Carey a free ride into the final. He then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, he ran 5.65/251.81 to qualify #10. But in the first round, Joe Amato's 5.47/262 beat his 5.79/247.93.
