Notes: At the WWCS in Bakersfield in May, Payne ran 6.619/212.26, but was outside the 16-car field looking in. Fortunately for Payne, #16 qualifier John Shoemaker was unable to make round 1 & Payne got in to face #8 qualifier Bill Barney. Unfortunately, Payne's 6.77/204.08 was no match for Barney's 6.52/208.81. Payne then went to Fremont for the WWCS where he qualified #3 in the 16-car field with a 6.374/215.31. In round 1 he faced #11 qualifier Dave Hansen. Payne's 6.61/210.28 was a losing effort to Hansen's 6.545/208.81. At the US Nationals, Payne qualified #13 with a 6.540/219.60 & drew #5 qualifier Brian Raymer in round 1. Payne's 6.621/209.20 was a losing time to Raymer's 6.473/214.79. Ran NHRA Winston Finals in Pomona where Payne qualified #4 with a 6.442/214.38. Payne defeated #12 qualifier Billy Williams in round 1 6.594/211.56 to 6.751/209.39 & #16 qualifier Denny Lucas in round 2 6.565/210.77 to 6.641/204.26. Notes: Payne started his season at Firebird Raceway in mid-January for the NHRA Division 7 opener. His 6.36/216.34 qualified second to Stephen Fedele's 6.29/216. Another 6.36 at 214.28 beat Don Irvin's 6.55/207 in round one. He fouled away a 6.33/214.28 in the semi-final against Mike Withrow, who advanced with a 6.43/194. Shortly after that, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 at 6.38/216.19, but in the opening round, his 6.35/216.91 fell to Dennis Lucas' 6.28/214. He ran at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and while he failed to reach the final, he set Top Speed at 219.67. Payne was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race in the first week of April. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.23/220.21. A 6.32/211.41 in the first round beat an engine-blowing Gary Scelzi. He was late off the line in the semi-final, and his 6.27/220.10 lost to Bill Walsh's 6.31. Near the end of April, he went to Baylands Raceway for the second NHRA Division 7 race. This was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #4. Jay got to solo in the first round when Steve San Paolo failed to show. He ran 6.54/216.34 to advance. In round two, a 6.45/217.39 defeated Dennis Allen's 6.49/210. He picked up to 6.37/210.28 in the semi-final to take out Eldon Slick's 6.98/99. He faced Rick Santos's little SB Chevy-powered car in the final. Jay had a slight edge during eliminations and held that slight edge in the final. Unfortunately, he was late off the line, and his 6.43/217.39 finished runner-up to Santos' 6.45/212. The following week (May 3), he made up for it by winning the NHRA Division 7 race at Famoso. It was another sixteen-car field, and he set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 6.36. He then ran 6.42/218.97 over Rick Ewens' 6.61/206. In round two, another 6.42 at 219.51 took out John Shoemaker, and in the semi-final, Mark Niver lost to his 6.48/217.91. He went up against Tom Bristow in the final. Tom blew his engine, and Jay ran 42/217.39 for the victory. Low qualifier at Ennis 4/87. Jay ran 6.358/216.45 at NHRA Indianapolis, IN, 9/05/87.
