Notes: All new chassis. Finished second in Divison 6. Info from National Dragster, 10/29/71. | Herm qualified seventh with a 7.03/213.76 at Bremerton on June 1 for a Division 6 race. Dan Higgins beat him in the first round. He then went to Seattle for the Travelon's Fuel Championships on June 8. His first-round opponent fouled against him and in the semifinals, his 6.99/224.42 (Top Speed and track record) beat Dick Kalivoda. In the final, a 6.96/222.42 failed to beat Jerry Ruth's 6.87/221. He set Top Speed again, this time at 217.39, at the third Division 6 race at Mission City, BC. Ron Rolstad fouled against him in the opening round, but he lost to Hank Johnson in the semis. The stars aligned on July 27 for the fourth Division 6 race where he beat low qualifier Dwight Salisbury with a holeshot win in the first round; his 7.12/215.82 beat Dwight's quicker 7.08/220. Herm went on to win with a 7.14/210.76 beating Jerry Ruth in the final. At the final Division 6 race at Seattle on August 24, Ruth got pay-back with a first-round 6.88/226 drubbing of Herm's 7.68/213.28.

Notes: Herm qualified #9 at Pomona for the Winternationals at 6.838/206.42. He beat Denver Schutz in round one, 6.94/202.70 to 8.26/98.00. Jimmy King ended his day in round two, 6.93/213.77 to 7.40/213.77. Herm qualified #20 at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.741/209.79. He won round one over Gerry Glenn, 6.70/221.13 to 6.72/213.44, and then won round two when Jim Harnsberger lost fire. Herm took a 10.18/78.00 victory lap. Herm again coasted to victory in round three at 10.04/82.04 after Jim Nicoll fouled (14.75/55.04). Herm lost to a John Wiebe holeshot in the semis, 6.65/207.85 to 6.61/220.04. At the Englishtown Summernationals, Herm set the pace with a low qualifying 6.661 at 217.39. He won round one, then Ted Thomas went off the track and was disqualified; Herm ran 6.85/195.65. Notes: Petersen was at Fremont for their New Year's Day race. He qualified #2 with a 6.61, but he lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lasted until round three, scoring a first-round victory with a 6.69 and a second-round 6.58 over Rick Ramsey's 6.58, but in the third round, Carl Olson beat him. On March 19, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.43 qualified #3, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.41 in the first round, to beat Bill Wigginton's 6.63. In round two, he soloed with a 15.82 when Jimmy King failed to show (broke). Herm's 392 failed to fire in the semifinal, giving Clayton Harris a single into the final. Herm made history by scoring the first major win for the Donovan motor by winning the PDA Championships at OCIR. He beat Don Garlits' 6.63 with a 6.42 in the first round, before losing to Fred Mooneyham's 6.62/212 in the second round with a quicker 6.58/217.91. He got back in on the break rule and made the best of it by dropping Randy Allison's 6.57/184 with a 6.37/222.77 in the third frame (32-car field). In the semifinal, he met Mooneyham again. This time, he made sure to put him outrunning a 6.24 (Low ET) at 220.04 over Fred's 6.58/229. In the final, he defeated Tom McEwen for the victory.
