Notes: This is the car that Herm ran from late 1971 through the 1972 season before selling it to John Stewart. After winning the '73 NHRA Gatornationals in his own car, Herm drove his former car, substituting temporarily for Stewart at Sacramento Raceway Park during the first Annual California State Championships. During eliminations in the 8 car field, he beat Dwight Hughes with a 6.52/214.29 pass in the first round, beat Dennis Baca with a 6.27/211.27 pass in the second round, and lost to James Warren in the final when his 6.39/225.57 pass came up short.

Notes: Herm won the 1973 NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified 6th at 6.23/232.55 and beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, with a 6.19/214.79. He beat Don Garlits in the second round with a 6.080/234.37. He beat Don Prudhomme in the semifinals with a 6.084/233.16 and took out new national record holder Jim Bucher's broken Chevy in the final with a 6.22/230.76 single. That summer, he was severely burned in an accident at OCIR during the 7th Annual PDA Championships. His car broke an axle and flipped over, sliding backward down the track while on fire. Ran 6.15 in Seattle. Herm started the '73 season at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 in the 32-car field with a 6.37/194.38. In the first round, both he and Pat Dakin ran 6.31 (Herm at 213.77), and Petersen got the "win" light. But he got out of shape in round two and shut off to 9.96 in a loss to Don Prudhomme, who advanced at 6.21. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track was rough, and on the first weekend (February 3) of qualifying, he ran 7.15/204.54 for the #16 spot in the 32-car field. The race took three weeks to run, and when qualifying had finally ended, his time was bumped back to #21. He faced Don Garlits in the first round, and the "Old Man's" 6.60/234 beat his 7.09/222.22. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Herm qualified #3 in the 32-car field with a 6.44. Phil Soares fouled against him in the first round, and Petersen ran 6.74 to advance. A 6.58/223.88 beat Don Moody's 6.93 in round two, and he got another easy single in round three when Jim Herbert broke on the line. He then lost to the race's eventual winner Dwight Salisbury, in the semifinal. Herm's 6.71/229.59 lost to Dwight's 6.62. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Herm qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field, and he beat Denver Schutz in the opening round. He lost in the following round. The big win at the NHRA Gatornationals was detailed above, but it was a good weekend for him. He then went to OCIR on March 24 for the final OCIR All-Pro race. It was another sixteen-car show, and his 6.49 qualified #9. He faced low qualifier Jack Martin, who was driving the "Mr. Ed" car in the first round. Jack had trouble and had to shut down while Herm ran 6.30/231.36 to advance. A even better 6.28/229.00 beat Schutz's 6.35/229 in round two. A slightly out of shape 6.78/207.85 beat Walt Rhoades even more out of shape 7.08/209 in the semifinal. He faced Moody in the final, and Don's 6.26/222 got the victory over Herm's 6.56/205.47. He drove his old car that he had sold to John Stewart at Sacramento for the California State Championships. This was an eight-car show, and Herm did really well. He ran 6.52/214 and 6.27/211 to beat Dwight Hughes and Dennis Baca right in their backyards. James Warren saved face for the California teams by running 6.31/222 in the final to beat Herm's 6.39/225 runner-up effort. He was back in his car on April 29 for the Seattle Northwest Open. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.46. A solo 6.59 got him through round one when Terry Capp shut off with vibration problems. But in round two, his 6.36/219 lost to Jeb Allen's 6.16/238. He got yet another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 6 opener held at Bremerton Raceway. It was supposed to be an eight-car show, but the field was one short. He was the low qualifier (6.20/231.36 Low ET and Top Speed); he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 6.35/205.46. Wayne King broke on the line against him in the semifinal, so once again, Herm went down the track alone. This time he ran 6.23/230.76. He faced Jerry Ruth in the final and it was sure to be a great race as Jerry was running 6.2's throughout eliminations. Unfortunately, Petersen blower exploded just off the line in the final, and Ruth won with a 6.53/204. He then went to Eugene, Oregon, for the 1/8 Mile Drags. He set Low ET in the final while winning over King with a 4.36.

Was still a really strong runner using the Donovan engine. Reverted to this more conventional top fuel machine after trying out a unique Can Am fueler at Pomona and Gainesville. Herm won the Division 6 Opener at Bremerton Raceway in April, beating Jerry Ruth in the final and setting Low ET and Top Speed earlier at 6.06/236.22. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at Seattle for the Fifth Annual Northwest Open. 21 cars tried to make the show. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 with a 6.173/230.76. He beat Dick LaHaie's 6.37/224 in the first round, with a motor blowing 6.30/227.84. With a new motor installed, it only ran 6.58 and lost to John Wiebe's 6.53 in round two. Petersen won the second Division 6 race in June at Mission Raceway in B.C. Only 5 cars showed to do battle in Top Fuel and Herm set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.34. He got the odd-lot single in the first round, and ran 6.42/207.00 and in the semifinal, beat Terry Capp's 6.51/223 with a 6.44/216.34. In the final, he beat a tire-smoking Gaines Markley with a 6.35/223.32. He wasn't so lucky at the third Division 6 race in Edmonton, Alberta, where he still made it into the final, but Ruth set Low ET and Top Speed in beating him with a 6.11/233.16. Herm still ran a strong 6.27/216.34. Best NHRA National Event times were 6.173/232.55.

Notes: Herm had his new streamliner out for the first time at Irwindale in January. He made two easy passes before getting on it and running a 6.78/205. The car was a 6.300 fifth alternate (speed unavailable) at Pomona. Shortly after that, he went to Rocket City Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Don Garlits. He lost all three races, turning a 6.78/188.67 best. The track had not been used for two years, and the cold weather also kept the cars from getting any traction. Still, Garlits had run a best of 6.26/198 in their match. Because he was the defending race winner of the NHRA Gatornationals, all he had to do was make a pass to qualify. Petersen's 6.634/221.13 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He lost first-round to Carl Olson's holeshot-aided 6.730/186.72 to Herm's 6.637/218.44. Herm had realized before this that he had to switch back to a more conventional car. The beautiful Can-Am-inspired body looked great but was too heavy for the car to pull. Don Ewald and others have said that if the team had tried this with one of the powerful new 426 aluminum motors instead of the 392-based motor, it is possible the experiment would have worked.

Notes: Chad attempted to qualify at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.91/196.72 ended up as the fourth alternate. At the 1/8 mile IHRA Bama Nationals, he qualified #14 for the show with a 4.41/162.95. All three of the CT racing team cars made the field. Unfortunately, a first-round 4.50/157.09 lost to Bill Kuhlmann's 4.32/165. Chad was at Atco in July for the IHRA Summernationals. His 6.73/200.26 qualified #12. He cut a good light in the first round, and his 6.82/200.26 hung on to win over Steve Johnson's 6.78/205. In the second round, his 6.78/201.92 fell to the eventual winner Mark Carter's 6.75/206.

A first-round 6.87/200.35 lost to Steve Johnson's 6.83/202. At the IHRA Bama Nationals at Huntsville Dragway's 1/8 mile track, Chuck qualified #9 with a 4.37/166.14. All three team cars qualified. In the first round, he shut off to 4.96/111.28 that lost to Johnson's 4.43/163. At Bristol, Chuck was unfortunate as he was the only CT racing team car to not qualify for the show. Notes: Chuck qualified #2 at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals with a 6.69/203.89. In the opening round, Fred Hahn broke, so Peterson's 6.84/192.96 advanced. But in round two, the car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut down to a 10.11/87.77 loss to Chris Hunt. He went to Eddyville Dragway for its Weekend of Thunder race held early in August. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Chuck set a new track record 4.29 in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field. The speed on the run was 165.02. In round one, his 4.42/166 beat Doug Mills' 4.59/156. In round two, he was late of the line, and his 4.42/160 lost to Bill Neri's 4.50/157. Only three supercharged cars qualified at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-American Nationals, and Peterson had one of them. His 6.81/200.04 gave him the #11 spot in the field. He fell off to 6.94/198.23 in the opening round, which lost to Mark Carter's 6.80/206. His next stop was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Once again, he had one of the three supercharged cars that made the show; his 6.81/200.62 qualified #11. In the first round, he ran 6.84/202.98 to beat Carl Moyer's 6.91/199. But in round two, his 6.89/197.97 lost to Scotty Cannon's 6.77/207.

Notes: Craig was at Woodburn Dragstrip on July 7th for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.35/218.39. But an opening-round 6.41/214.64 lost to Dan Rajkovich's 6.34/218. Peterson was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals in the first week of August. Only 14 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. His 6.40/221.63 qualified #13. He fouled against Mike Andreotti in the first round and shut down to 8.02/114.95.
