Notes: 1860-lb non-factory flip-top. Logghe chassis, Hilborn-injected 427 Cammer, C-6 combo. Successful Canadian door-car racer Petrie switched from Chrysler to Ford after witnessing the 1966-season success of Comet shoes Don Nicholson and Ed Schartman. The "BP experimental No. 1" signage referred to sponsor British Petroleum's use of the car as a mobile test lab for oils under extreme racing conditions. Period pictures of the car show it both in red and in white (with black "vinyl" roof) colors. Online reports in 2012 had the car recovered and about to begin a restoration. - RT | Listed in FUELFC due to the lightweight flip-top configuration. John was at Napierville on June 4 for a best-of-three-match race against Della Woods. He won two straight, running a best of 9.03/157.

Notes: John ran his Cuda on the NHRA National event trail in 1971 but also brought out a new Duster. He had a great year in NHRA competition, qualifying at Pomona, Gainesville, Dallas, Quebec, and Indy. John did not win any national events, but he went deep into eliminations at almost all of them. He quaified #3 at 9.983/139.31 at the NHRA Pomona Winternationals, but imrpoved to a 9.93 in eliminatinos, making it to the semis. John quaified #6 at Gainesville at 9.710/142.63 but Don Carlton stopped him in round two. John ran the Cuda on April 4 to dominate the Maple Grove NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race. He reset the track record to 9.74 and beat Rick Holladay in the final with a 9.82/140.02. John won the first ever Sanair WCS meet on 5/23/71 with a 10.04/139.75 holeshot win over Rich Mirarcki in the Mimi Camaro at 10.01. He ran a best of 10.157/136.72 at Columbus, and 9.77/141 in Englishtown, making it to the semis again. John qualified at Sanair at 9.86, and then ran 9.67 and 9.76, which lost to an incredible 9.49 by Don Carlton in the semis. John qualified #7 at Indy 1971 at 9.716/142.40, and ran 9.80/141.06 to beat Bill Stiles at 10.03/137 in round one. He best Eddie Schartman in round two, 9.77 to 9.90, but then fouled against Ronnie Sox in round three. That was John's last NHRA national event of the year. He also went 140.62 at Maple Grove PA 1971. John also used Comp #118.

Notes: Petrie started the season at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 with a 9.84, but that set up a first-round meeting with Ronnie Sox, in which he lost. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona had a 32-car field, and Petrie had the same problem as he did at Beeline. He qualified(#19) at 9.928/140.84, opposite of Sox, and once again, he lost to him in the first round, 9.61/143 to John's 10.06/141.06. Petrie qualified #31 at Englishtown at 10.078/135.54 and lost to Bruce Walker in round one, 9.86/137.61 to 10.06/136.98. He did really well at his final NHRA event of the year, the Grandnationals in Ontario. He qualified #7 at 9.840 and won round one over Rick Hurst, 9.93/137 to 10.30/136. In round two, John redlighted against Ron Hutter and lost to Ron's 9.71/138 with an 8.86/138. All reports I've seen indicate John drove a Cuda all year. Please confirm if you know.

Notes: Joe was at Maple Grove in April for its Spring All-Pro Pro Comp Championships. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field and a 7.00/193.96 beat Art Ruggiero in the first round. Jeff Rapp blew his motor in the first round while winning, and he was able to return to race Petro in the semifinals, so Joe made an easy solo pass. He faced low qualifier Scott Weney in the final. Scott had the edge based on ETs as he had run 6.8s throughout the race. But in the final, Joe got out on Scott, and his 6.92/198.67 got him the victory over Scott's quicker 6.84/197.
