Notes: Flipped & flew at OCIR. Ran 7.45 at Lions. Mike Gagnon information. | Pickett started the season on January 1 at Irwindale's New Year's Day Race. He qualified #9, but lost to low qualifier Tommy Grove in the first round. Bob ran 7.82/182.18 in the loss. Pickett was back at Irwindale on January 26 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he got crossed up in the first round and shut off, giving Ed Lenarth the win. He was at Lions on February 14 for another eight-car show that had 30 cars attempting to qualify. Bob made the show, but in the first round, took a little snooze when his quicker 7.35 lost to Tom McEwen's 7.41. Famoso had only seven funny cars show up, so making the eight-car field was easy. Pickett met Dave Beebe in the first round, and Beebe's 7.86/189 beat the Javelin's 7.88/182.40. On March 28, he competed at the final OCIR All Pro event. It was a sixteen-car field. In the first round, his 7.57/194.80 beat Steve Bovan, who blew a motor. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Mike Snively in Jim Annin's Challenger. He returned to OCIR on April 18 for an eight-car show. In the first round, an off pace 8.37/182.18 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.61/184 in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. The last event this car ever competed in was the Big Four Championships at OCIR on May 2. Bob ran 7.45/195.65 in the first round, while beating Ron Leslie's Cougar, but at the top end of the track, the Javelin became airborne. The car came down hard and was totally destroyed. Bob was taken to the hospital with a concussion and a broken back. Pocket was back in action seven months later with a new Barracuda funny car. National Dragster lists 7.25/201 best.

He was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships, but he lost to Kelly Brown driving Barry Setzer's Vega in the opening round. The next day he was at Irwindale for its 5th Annual Independence Day Championships. There he fouled against Gene Conway in the first round.

Notes: Pickett started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.93 qualified #5. His 6.98 beat Tom Ferraro's 7.27 in the "Rat Trap" in the opening round of eliminations. A second-round 6.85/219.51 lost to Butch Maas' 6.70/209 in the M/T Grand Am. He then went to OCIR for its second All-Pro race, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Pickett did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, and he had trouble qualifying at the next couple races, but he made the show at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show with a 7.34. Unfortunately, he got crossed up in the first round, against Twig Zeigler and shut off. He was back at OCIR on March 24 for the final All-Pro race. The last race featured sixteen-car PRO fields. His 6.96 got him the #12 spot. The car broke in the opening round against Mike Van Sant in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" car. He competed at the Las Vegas Open on April 8, where his first-round 7.70 beat Bryan Raines 7.85 in Nick Harmon's car. In the semifinal, his 7.33 failed to beat Mert Littlefield, who advanced at 7.18. At the OCIR Hang Ten Funny Car 500, Pickett's 7.10 qualified #13. He faced the Pat Foster-driven Barry Setzer Vega in the opening round. Bob shut down early in their race while Foster moved into the second round with a 6.83. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Memorial Day Championships. This was an eight-car show, and Roger Garten's 6.83/224 in the opening round stopped his 7.03/208.33. In mid-June, OCIR held its Lions Championships. Pickett qualified #5 in the eight-car field, with a 7.09; this set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Littlefield. Bob had issues in their race and shut off. While the car wasn't winning many races, it was chosen the "best appearing car" at Irwindale for the second NHRA Division 7 race. But his 6.95/216.34 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.73/189 in the "Keeling and Clayton" Pinto. He scored a big one on June 30 when he won the OCIR Nitromethane Championships over a sixteen-car field. He got an easy solo in round one, when Larry Christopherson's Vega broke on the burnout. In the second round, Garten's troubled 7.96/130 lost to his 6.95/213.27, and in the semifinal, he had a close race with John Lombardo that saw Bob's 6.88/213.77 beat John's 6.89/191 by inches. He faced Littlefield in the final, and Mert had problems and shut off while Pickett ran 6.89/214.28 for the win. A few days later, he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July Championships. Unfortunately, there his 6.96/211.76 in round one, lost to Joe Lee's 6.81/212. It was back to OCIR on July 22 for the PDA Championships. Once again, Pickett lost early; this time, his 7.08/214.28 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.90/209 in the first round, of eliminations. Bob qualified on the "bump" at Tulsa's 32-car show with a 6.84/215.31 for the AHRA National Challenge race. He improved to 6.73/205 in the first round, to beat Jim Dunn, while in round two, his 6.88 lost to Dale Emery's 6.61. Pickett failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but it was a tough show to make as almost 50 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen spots. At the end of September, he was at Irwindale's Grand Prix race. He qualified an unlucky #9 in the sixteen-car show forcing him to run low qualifier, Don Prudhomme in the opening round. Picket tried hard in their race, but his 6.98/214.79 was no match for the "Snake's" 6.57/203. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park, where Bob was a DNQ at 6.718/218.44.

Notes: Pickett was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.588/212.26 to qualify #13. An off-pace 7.11/214.79 in the first round, lost to Tom Hoover's 6.77/201. In March, he won the Irwindale Fox Hunt race. A final round 6.64/218.97 got him the victory over Mike Van Sant's 6.71/218 in the "Hawaiian." He was running really well at OCIR on April 6 for the AHRA Grand American race. Bob beat Tom McEwen in the first round, with a 6.80/218.44, while in round two, his 6.87/215.31 beat Joe Lee. He faced Ed McCulloch in the semifinals, but the "Lil Demon" broke, and McCulloch soloed into the final. At the 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at Irwindale, Pickett lost to Lee's 6.75/206 in the first round, with a 6.87/221. He got back in on the "break rule" and beat Don Schumacher in round two with a 6.75/214.28. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in round three. He was back at Pomona on May 5 for the NHRA Division 7 opener. His 6.58 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Pat Foster's 6.54. But in the opening round of competition, his 6.97 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.96. Bob ran 6.611/217.91 at Indy and 6.494/214.79 at Ontario. The team also ran 6.56 at Irwindale.

Notes: Qualified 5th at the 1975 NHRA Summernationals (Englishtown) with a 6.38/231.36 pass. Speed held up as "Top Speed of the Event." - TN | Ran a 6.32/228.42 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT | Ran 6.36/230.76 at Indy US Nationals 9/75 and 6.345/229.59 in qualifying at Ontario 10/12/75. | After driving Pete Everett’s "Lil’ Demon" for the first part of the year, Bob Pickett showed up at the Byron Manufacturer's Meet on June 15 behind the wheel of Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. It was a successful outing as all twelve cars ran round one, with the eight lowest ETs running in round two. Pickett’s 6.88/198.23 beat Shirl Greer's close 6.89/200 in the first round, and both advanced to round two. In this round, the two Low ET cars would then advance to the final. Bob faced Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems and shut down to a 7.64 loss (his first loss in eight years at this event) while Bob's 6.51/222.77 (Top Speed) was enough to reach the final against Gene Snow, who also ran a 6.51 in his win. Snow had just returned to driving after having back surgery. Both cars came to the line for the final, and the starter noticed an oil leak on Snow's car and shut him down. Pickett was signaled to run a single for the win, but he chose to shut down and wait for Snow's crew to fix the leak. After the leak was repaired, they lined up again, and they had a close race with Gene's 6.57/197 edging Bob's 6.58/175.35 for the win. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where a 6.44/199 qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field behind Raymond Beadle's 6.42 in the "Blue Max." Pickett beat Jim Nicoll in the first round, before losing to Denny Savage, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The team also went to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals but failed to reach the finals. Shortly after that, Pickett was at Cayuga Dragway in Canada for the Gold Cup Championships. One thing about this car, the body was bigger than any other Funny Car competing on the track at this time, yet it constantly got Top Speed honors almost everywhere it was raced. At Cayuga, Bob’s first-round 6.59/221.67 set Top Speed while beating Bill Leavitt. He reached the finals against Beadle, but his 6.71/206.42 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.61/182. The car also showed its top-end horsepower in qualifying at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Pickett’s 6.38/231.36 (Top Speed) qualified the car #5. Unfortunately, he got out of shape and shut off in the opening round against Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. It was then off to York's US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where Pickett picked up the win with a final round 6.51 over Al Segrini's 6.89. The team was back at Englishtown for a four-car show that saw Pickett run 6.56/225 over Prock in his first race, but then the Grand Am got sideways in the second round and lost to Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford.” It was back to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in early August. Pickett qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.51/207.37. Another 6.51 in the first round, beat Paul Smith's 6.61, but in the semifinals, he slowed down a tenth to a 6.61/218.97 that lost to eventual winner Prudhomme’s 6.59/222.

Notes: Bob Pickett debuted Mickey Thompson's newly painted Grand Am at the Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The car was still unlettered for the race. The team had trouble getting the car to "stick" as Pickett smoked the tires in all three of his runs. He won his first race, where his 8.56/148.27 beat Raymond Beadle's even more smoked in 10.40 in the "Blue Max." A second-round 8.32 lost to Norm Wilcox's 6.51 in the "Hawaiian," and a 7.09 in his last race lost to Gary Burgin's 6.63. The team skipped both the AHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Winter Classic, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.301/187.50 qualified #10. But an opening-round 6.655/209.79 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.411/210.77. Shortly after that (February 21), he was at OCIR for its East/West meet. Six cars were competing, each to make three runs. In Pickett's first race, his 6.38/214.28 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.48/232. The Grand Am broke in the second race and lost to Don Prudhomme. He won his third race easily as his opponent, Tommy Ivo, crossed the centerline. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob's 6.521/230.17 qualified #11, and in the first round, his 6.57/225.00 beat Beadle, who smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 (see linked video). A second-round 6.65/221.13 beat Tom Hoover's 6.74/220.04, but tire smoke did him in in the semifinals, where his 7.09/193.96 lost to Shirl Greer's 6.50/206.42. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 mph Funny Car Championships. The third 200 mph FC Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Pickett at a 6.12, with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Bob's next stop was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He qualified #1 at 6.40/240.37 (Top Speed). The 240 may not have been totally legit, but Bob ran 230/235 several times during the year. Pickett lasted until round two before his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.31. The following weekend, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. It was supposed to be a 32-car show, but only 30 cars showed. All were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. A 6.62/196.50 beat Bryan Raines in the first race, and he ran a decent 6.38/225.56 in the second race, but he lost to Gary Densham's 6.31/202. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. Early in May, he stopped off at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.40 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.20. He improved to 6.26/225.56 in the opening round over John Collins' 6.49/202. Unfortunately, he fouled to McCulloch in the semifinal. The next day (May 9), Bob was in Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56/215.82 qualified #5. An easy 6.89/209.30 beat Nick Harmon in the first round. He was a tad late in round two, and his 6.46/223.32 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.52/216. The M/T car was at St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals in the first week of June. He qualified #5 for the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Bob's 6.60/191.82 lost to McEwen's 6.33/221. The following week, Pickett was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.500/226.70 qualified #5. His 6.485/229.00 in the first round beat Larry Arnold's 6.506/196.07. Prudhomme stopped him again in round two; the "Snake's" 6.378/206.42 dropped his 6.411/222.22. Bob qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.598/206.89. He lost a close one to Dodger Glenn in round one, 6.837/213 to 6.879/217. He was the first alternate at Indy at 6.295/220.04 but was the fifth qualifier at Seattle at 6.269/199.55. Tom McEwen upset him in round one, 6.40/213.27 to 6.41/229.00. Bob qualified #3 at the World Finals at 6.214/233.76. He beat McEwen in round one, 6.195/233.16 to 6.698/158.73. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42. Don Prudhomme nipped him in the semis with a 6.251/220.04 to 6.326/230.17 decision. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner.

Notes: Bob debuted the new Starfire at Fremont's Nitro Bowl. He set Low ET and Top Speed there with a 6.49/210.77 in the opening round. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals as the 5th alternate (times unavailable). At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.709/173.41 qualified on the "bump spot" of the sixteen-car field. In the first round, Pickett beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" at 6.45/197.80, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Don Prudhomme. On April 9, he was Irwindale for the big 64-car show. While Pickett never reached the final, he did turn the third-best ET, a 6.28. Tulsa was his next stop for the AHRA Springnationals. There he lasted until round two before losing to Gene Snow. In June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.43/228.43 behind Tom Hoover's 6.39. Unfortunately, he lost a driveshaft and the race in the first round to Tom Prock. He got his first NHRA National event victory a week later (June 12) at the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #8 with a 6.24/231.95. He bested Gordon Mineo in round one, 6.25/212.76 to 6/65/177. In round two, he then ran 6.21/228.42 over Eddie Pauling's identical 6.21 at 198.67. He took out Billy Meyer's 7.05 in the semis with an excellent 6.19/228.42. In the final, he faced none other than Don Prudhomme in the Army-sponsored Arrow. Bob ripped off a 6.22/231.95 to do what few did in '77 - beat the "Snake." Don followed Pickett through with a 6.26/236.84. It was a really good showing for the team. At the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown, Bob qualified #10 with a 6.33/228.42. But he broke against Tom McEwen in the opening round. He had another first-round loss at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42 on July 31. Pickett qualified well, running 6.38/227.77 for the #3 spot in the eight-car show, but a 6.56/225.00 lost to Billy Graham's 6.35/222 in the opening round. The team did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they did attend the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. The Starfire ran well there, beating Al Bergler in the first round, with a 6.24, and he beat Prock in round two before losing to Dale Pulde's 6.13 in the semifinals with a 6.21. A week later (August 21), he was at Spokane Raceway for the AHRA World Finals. In the first round, he ran 6.52/208.80 over Bob Papirnick, but in round two, his 6.57/220.04 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.45/212 in the "Blue Max." The team qualified #11 at Indy with a 6.213/229.00. Bob beat Gordie Bonin in round one, 6.369/216.87 to 6.62/224. In round two, he lost to Tom Prock, 6.24/221 to 6.325/208.33. Bob grabbed the #13 spot at Ontario for the World Finals at 6.26/233.76. He shut off on the line against Gordie Bonin in round one. | The 6.17 might have been run during qualifying at the '77 Manufacturer's Meet, which Pickett won, according to my long-gone NDs and Drag News as a 16-year old Funny Car geek. - Joe Moore

He picked up to a 6.39/228.42 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat low qualifier Don Prudhomme's 6.14/236. He was at Brainerd International for the US Funny Car Championships. On Saturday, he raced Prudhomme, and his 6.54/220.58 lost to Prudhomme at 6.24/235. Bob qualified on the "bump" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.260/230.76. He had problems in the first round against Pat Foster and shut down to 16.20-45. The 6.26 was Bob's best NHRA time this year. Did he run 6.165 somewhere? Former Tom Hoover "Showtime" Monza.

Notes: After driving for Mickey Thompson for several seasons, Pickett went on his own in 1979. Bob was at the AHRA Winternationals but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 at 6.229/233.16, but he broke against Tom Prock in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at 6.330/229.59, meaning he had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. Sure enough, the "Snake" beat him, 6.44/228 to 6.650/221.13. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.40/233.76. A 6.55/222.77 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.36/234 in round one. Bob qualified #11 at Columbus at 6.27/228.42 and lost to Tom Hoover in round one, 6.33/231 to 14.59/50. Bob qualified #13 at Englishtown at 6.25/232.55 and again had issues in round one, falling to Jim Adolph, 6.28/231 to 11.86. Bob qualified on the bump at Indy at 6.130/230.76, but round one blues set in again, and Pat Foster took a 6.25/235 to 11.22/72 decision. Bob was the fifth alternate at the Ontario Finals (no time reported, but no quicker than 6.56).

Notes: 1980 was the last year of the "Marines" sponsorship. In March, Pickett was at Beeline for the NHRA Divisional race. He was running well, hitting a 6.35/231.95 in his semifinal win over Tripp Shumake, but in the final, his 6.42/227.84 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.22/237. In April, he was at OCIR's 64-car show. He ran 6.27 at 231 twice to win over Ed Moore in the "Impulse" Mustang and John Force. He lost before the finals. At the third NHRA Division 4 race at Houston, only three FCs showed. Unfortunately, in the first round, Pickett's 6.42/230.17 lost to Johnny White's holeshot 6.45/226. He qualified for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.25/234.98 (#13), but he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Bob won the NHRA Division 5 race at Brainerd in August He ran a best of 6.18 en route to the final. In the final, he beat Rob Williams with a 6.20/224.43. Pickett's 6.31/205.01 qualified #7 in the eight-car field at the PHR Championships. He lost in the opening round to eventual winner Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian." He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals when his 6.17 best failed to make the 6.10 "bump." He qualified #11 at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.24/230.76, but he lost to Rob Williams in the first round.

Notes: Bob won the January 1981 show at OCIR, where Jim Dunn ran the 5.85. Bob defeated Jim in the final with a 6.25/227 when Big Jim banged a blower in the Hawaiian and slowed to a 6.99. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Bob qualified #11 with a 6.551/217.91. He beat a crossed-up Jim Dunn in the first round with a 6.39/214.28. In round two, he picked up to a 6.27/219.51 to beat Tom McEwen's 6.32. He was shut off on the line with a leak in the semifinals, advancing Dale Pulde into the final. In May, he ran at the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.36/218.44. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. Pickett smoked the tires and lost to Don's 6.19. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.227/227.84. This time he met low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round. Bob got out of shape in their race, and Beadle took the win with a 6.20/219. On July 26, Pickett made it into the final at the NHRA Western Regional at Brainerd. He had some luck when Craig Epperly failed to show in the first round, and his 6.52/226.70 advanced. In the semifinals, low qualifier Carl Swanson smoked the tires, and his 6.40/226.70 (again) advanced. In the final, he had troubles and shut off to an 18.32 that lost to Mike Dunn's 6.50/234. Bob was the fifth alternate at NHRA Indy with his best times of the year, 6.149/236.84. That was his last NHRA national event for the year.

Notes: Pickett was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals early in July. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.39/227.84 best failed to qualify. Pickett ran his first "five" at Maple Grove on September 14 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. It was a 5.99/242.91 that failed to qualify, but it was the first alternate. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. Bob ran the car with both "Hosemate" & "Circle Oil" lettered on the same red & white paint scheme in '86.
