Notes: When the '58 season ended, Poage had won 55 trophies, two Oldsmobile engines, a stroker crankshaft, $50, two jackets, and set records at five different drag strips in Washington and Oregon. Along the way, he racked up a bunch of TE victories. He set a new track record and took a TE win on May 11 at Shelton with 10.30 at 134.52 mph. On June 15 at Deer Park, he took top gas eliminator with 10.85 at 133.33 mph. On June 6 at Shelton, he ran on nitro, clocking 133.54 mph. On July 13 at Scappoose, Oregon, he won a '52 Olds engine with transmission and clocked 144.79 mph. On July 20, he set another new track record at Shelton with 10.37 at 138.48 mph. A week later, he set a track record at Bremerton with 10.49 at 146.29 mph. On Aug. 17 at Shelton, he broke his old track record with 10.34 at 138.67 mph. He took a TE win at Bremerton with an 11.34 clocking on Aug. 24. On Sep. 1, he broke his Shelton record again with 10.08 at 139.10 mph. Notes: After blowing their engine in the last race of the 1958 season at Spokane, members of the Cogs car club started rebuilding a new gas dragster with a '59 Chrysler motor, Beast IV. They had the new car ready for running at Shelton's race on June 7 where they clocked 9.86 at 154.90 mph. They were consistent Top Eliminator winners at Shelton, Bayview, and other Northwest drag strips. They were invited to enter the U.S. Nationals at Detroit and were making plans to do so.
