Notes: Potter (aka The Michigan Madman) built his first small block Chevy-powered bike in 1960 and raced them into the early Seventies. His first bike was prophetically named "Bloody Mary." Unsure how long this monicker was carried over. Guardrail-to-guardrail, tire-smoking runs the full length of the quarter-mile were to be expected during the early years. Eventually, he got the straight-tracking formula down, but tires were always a short-lived commodity for the Michigan Madman. - RT |

Notes: Best known for his small block Chevy-powered motorcycles, during the mid-Sixties, Potter also dabbled in four-wheelers. True to form, he was not satisfied with a "normal" dragster. This was one of two cars he built stuffed with WWII-era 1,710-inch Allison V-12 aircraft engines. This mill was service-rated at approximately 1,425 hp at 3,000 rpm but was capable of more when spun to 3,500-4,000 revs. The "already had it, so used it" Plymouth four-door sedan utilized a 400-lb multi-disc tugboat clutch Potter purchased from fellow Allison aficionados Art and Walt Arfons. For his next act, he would stuff this mill into his 1964 Dodge Dart station wagon. - RT; Photo: 1960s page on "Jet, Rocket, and Aircraft-Engined Dragsters: Pioneers of the First Four Decades" website - MB |

Notes: Best known for his small block Chevy-powered motorcycles, during the mid-Sixties, Potter also flirted with four-wheelers. This particular grocery getter, powered by the same engine that powered P-38, P-39, and P-40 pursuit planes, was his follow-up project to a V-12-powered '55 Plymouth sedan. With the massive engine leaving little in the way of interior room, Potter sat in a cloth sling seat here, his back against the Dart wagon's rear window. The car was the subject of a multi-page feature in the 12/64 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. Neither tire-smoking action shots nor interior photos indicate anything resembling a rollbar in the car. Mid-9s at 160 mph were predicted. With his guardian angel undoubtedly working overtime, Potter survived to retire from racing in 1973. The Michigan Madman passed away of natural causes in 2012 at age 71. - RT; 1960s page on "Jet, Rocket, and Aircraft-Engined Dragsters: Pioneers of the First Four Decades" website - MB |

Notes: E.J. Potter (aka The Michigan Madman) was best known for his small block Chevy-powered motorcycles, many iterations of which he rode throughout the Sixties. Pausing for brief flirtations with a pair of Allison aircraft-engined sedans, he built and rode a jet-powered trike too. In 1971, Potter was seriously injured for only the second time in his career when he was forced to jump from the trike at 120 mph after a parachute failed to open. Asked once in an interview what the difference was between himself and the better-known motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel, Potter said: "The difference between me and him was that he got paid to say he was going to do stuff, whether he did it or not. I got paid to actually do stuff." He retired from exhibition runs in 1973 and switched to competitive tractor pulling. Defying the odds and expectations of anyone who ever saw him run, the late E.J. Potter passed away of natural causes in 2012. He was 71. - RT; Photo: 1970s page in Jet, Rocket, and Aircraft-Engined Dragsters: Pioneers of the First Four Decades - MB |

Notes: In 1973 Potter moved from automotive-engined motorcycles to aircraft-engined tractor. His "Double Ugly" tractor, with twin V-1710 (1,710 cid each) Allison aircraft engines, was legendary. -- RT |

Notes: Potter took one last ride on his bike "at the 1999 Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, Kentucky. If Potter had any second thoughts about piloting the motorcycle at age 58, they certainly weren’t obvious in the video of his pass (a 10.362 second run at 145.96 mph)." -- Hemmings.com 8/24/2024 |
