Notes: Powley had one mean-looking Mach 1 Mustang. Dean was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 7.12 qualified on the "bump," and in round one, he improved to 7.10/199.11 to beat Bill Hamilton's 7.33/190. He had problems in round two and slowed to 7.62/136.15 in a loss to Jeg Coughlin's 6.93/199. He had a great race at Gainesville on November 21 for the Turkey Trot Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he failed to qualify for the field, which had just a 9.54 "bump." But he wasn't alone as even Wilfred Boutilier could not better that mark. But Dean was the first alternate and got into the show when Bob Hall had problems and could not run in eliminations. Powley's car "woke up" in the first round and ran 7.12/196.50 to beat Dave Miller's 7.50/172. Another 7.12/196.07 in the semi-final upset favored Bob Chipper and moved him into the final. In the final, he faced low qualifier Chase Knight's turbocharged AA/DA.
