Notes: Frank was at OCIR on Feb. 22 for the third All-Pro race. It was only an eight-car show, and he qualified while many "name" drivers such as James Warren, Steve Carbone failed to make the field. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the opening round of eliminations. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race held on March 28. Once again, he faced Dunn in the first round. This time he didn't foul, but his 7.58/136.98 lost to Jim's 7.30/154. Also ran 7.07 at Irwindale CA 7/4/70.

Notes: Prock started his '73 season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. Forty cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and his 6.52 got the #8 spot. An opening round 6.61/212.26 beat Denver Schutz's 6.81, and he improved to 6.42/222.22 in round two to defeat Dennis Baca. He continued to get stronger in the semifinals, where his 6.38/222.22 beat James Warren's 6.89/174. He went up against Don Moody, and once again, he stunned the fans by running 6.55/215.82 to win the event over Moody's off-pace 7.64. He showed that it was no fluke by qualifying #3 at OCIR's second All-Pro race with a 6.32. But in the first round, his 6.48/221.13 lost to Bob Noice's 6.36/208. Prock was at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 in the 32-car show with a 6.36/220.04. Paul Longenecker failed to show for his first-round race against Frank, so he soloed with a 6.40/212.40. Unfortunately, the car broke in round two in his match against eventual winner Don Garlits.

Notes: Frank had a good run going at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #2 with a 6.08/231.36, but in the first round, he was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Later in the month, he got a big win at Irwindale's "Fox Hunt" race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.27 and in the first round, he ran 6.31/225.56 to beat Gary Southern. In the final, he beat Dwight Salisbury with a 6.59/227.84.

Notes: Experimented with one of the most unusual supercharger/injector combinations I've ever seen. It appeared to be two 4/71 blowers mated together, topped with an 8-port crower injector that had been cut into 4 pairs of 2. These were mounted inline, AND tilted forward at 30-degree or so angle! No idea how long they tried it, or how well it worked (or IF it worked)! Dave Kommel has a couple pics of it on his site. Tim Simplot

Notes: First funny car for Al Bergler. Began as a partnership with Pete Seaton with Tom Prock as the driver. After a couple of early '71 races on the west coast, Bergler bought out Seaton and ran the car with Prock as the driver. Tom qualified #9 at Pomona with a 7.194/206.42. He crossed the centerline against Jake Johnston in round one. Johnston was broke but got the win nonetheless. Tom qualified #11 at Gainesville with a 7.30/209. In round one, he lost to Gene Snow, 6.89/214 to 7.02/211.26. In April, the team was at Aquasco for an eight-car show. Tom set a 6.80 track record at 194.38 in the first round to beat Malcolm Durham. His 7.30/200.88 beat Pete Williams' 7.36/195 in "Jungle Jim's" second car in the semifinals. Unfortunately, the car caught fire at the top end of the track. Prock eventually got the car stopped and was able to get out, but the car was completely destroyed. Prock got away with a slight burn on his neck and a bruised hand. Otherwise, he was OK. The car was rebuilt, and Prock was at Indianapolis early in May for the NHRA Division 3 race. He runner-upped to Roger Lindamood. Shortly after that (May 23), he was at Green Valley for the AHRA Grand American race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he was late, and his 7.16/201.78 lost to Art Ward's 7.31/202. In the first week of June, the team was at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Southern Nationals. Unfortunately, Prock lost to Leonard Hughes in the opening round. Tom was the seventh alternate at Indy in the team's last event with a 7.06/208.33. In '72, Prock left for the Custom Body ride, and Butch Maas drove for Al in the renamed Motown Shaker.

Notes: Castronovo Bros. Woody Car, Tom Prock was driving here. Phil Roberts was the crew chief; the number 2 is on the car as Phil Castronovo won the Funny Car World Championship in '71. Back then, the Top Fuel winner got the number 1. Funny car champ no. 2, Pro Stock no. 3. | After car owner Phil Castronovo won the NHRA World Championships and was crowned the '71 Funny Car Champion, he decided not to tour in '72 and placed Tom Prock behind the wheel of his "Custom Body" Challenger. Woody Gilmore built the 120" chassis. The car used a Keith Black-built 426 Hemi. It was stroked and used M/T rods, Venolia pistons, and a Crane roller cam. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and a Don Hampton prepared GMC 6/71 was overdriven 30%. A Hilborn pump fed the 92% nitro to the Enderle injection. The engine made 1,700 hp, and the power was sent to the Dana 5.12 rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. Don Kirby did the paint while Kenny Youngblood did his touch with the rest. The car weighed 1,800 lbs. The new car debuted early in July at Englishtown's FC Spectacular race.

Notes: Won Epping Funny Car Nats in late 73 at 6.51/201.79. Also ran 6.44 at NED Epping. Prock qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.599/222.22. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.889/170.77 fell to Leroy Goldstein's 6.58/222 in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. He won over an eight-car field at Atco in April for an NHRA Funny Car Pro circuit race. Times were way off at this race. In round one, his 7.75/202.24 beat a tire-smoking David Ray at 10.40. In the semifinal, he won a coasting contest with Al Hanna when both cars broke. Tom's 8.78/150.50 beat the "Eastern Raider's" 14.33. He faced Roy Harris in the final, and both cars made troubled runs, but Prock got the victory with an 8.43/205.01 over Harris' 12.56/70 in the "Frantic Ford." Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for another eight-car show. He didn't stay long as his 7.08/181.08 in the opening round fell to Al Segrini's 6.68/219. He competed at the Atco Funny Car Factory Showdown race at the end of the month (April 29). His 7.36/154.90 advanced when Richard Tharp had a rear-end break in the "Blue Max" in the first round. But the car lost fire in the semifinal against eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. On May 6, he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 opener. A 6.96/204.42 defeated Hanna's 7.70 in round one, but in the semifinal, Dale Emery's 6.48/222 beat his 6.85/198.67. In June, Prock was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Pete Hill. He then won the third NHRA Division 1 race held at Maple Grove on June 24. He got a solo in round one, when Lew Arrington broke. Tom advanced with a 6.69/203.16. He got another solo in the semifinal when Arnie Swensen's Mustang broke. This time Prock "cooled it" with a 9.41/83.17. He faced Joe Jacono in the final, and Prock's 6.89/216.86 scored the win over Jacono's 7.05/209 runner-up effort. His next stop was at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he beat the "Shark" with a 6.68/219.51. Tom continued to look strong in round two, where his 6.60/221.67 took out Fred Goeske's ailing Vega. An even better 6.55/221.67 defeated Hill in the semifinal. But in the final, he faced Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse" Mustang. Larry kept strides with him in eliminations and even ran a quicker 6.54 in his semifinal win. The two had a great final round race that saw Fullerton get out on Prock and lead all the way with his 6.51/221 beating Prock's 6.45/223.88. Larry's car exploded into flames just past the finish line to make the race even more exciting. Prock's times were good enough to reset both ends of the track record. On July 4, he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular. He lost to eventual winner Arrington in the opening round. But he returned for a consolation race against Fullerton, which he won with a 6.56/222.22 as Larry shut off early. Not long after (July 15), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A great 6.441/226.13 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.40/230. But he smoked the tires hard in the first round, and his 7.10/207.85 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.57/210. Prock got another win shortly after that at Lebanon Valley's Northeast Funny Car Nationals. His "Custom Body" Dodge was flying there as no one was anywhere close to his times. In round one, his 6.39/225 beat Liberman's 6.65/219. The closest anyone else came to his time in winning the first-round was 6.76! Prock just got quicker in the semifinal, running 6.37/226.40 over Hill's 6.78/204. In the final, Prock ran a track record 6.35 at 227.60 (Top Speed) to beat Tim Kushi's 6.86/209. He then won the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where his final round 6.74/218 beat Arrington's 6.91/210. Earlier, Prock had set Top Speed at 221.13. Things didn't go so well for him at the Atco World Funny Car Championships. He shut down on the line with problems in the opening round. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.812, but he didn't run in eliminations as alternate Stan Bowman took his place in the field. Another win came his way at the NHRA Division 1 race at Pittsburgh International. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.55/204.08 to beat David Ray in Mike Burkhart's Vega. Earlier in the race, he also ran 215.82 for Top Speed. He also won the New England Grand American Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he ran 6.48/211 in qualifying. Wayne Oxner fell to his 6.62/218 in the opening round, and in round two, Tom ran 6.49/226 to beat Ken Poffenberger. Arrington fried his tires against him in the semifinal, and he advanced with a 6.54/225. But Prock saved his best for the final, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 6.37/226.70 in stopping Liberman's 6.47/220. Prock had problems at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships. The car was acting up, and he was unable to run it in eliminations. After missing the show, he got the car sorted out and made a pass. His 6.63/220.04 was good enough for Low ET and Top Speed honors. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, Prock's 6.452/228.42 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round encounter with low qualifier Prudhomme. In their race, Tom ran career-best numbers of 6.301/229.00. Unfortunately, even that wasn't good enough to beat the "Snake's" 6.27/226. At the Amarillo World Finals, Tom qualified #2 for the Eastern Team and #5 overall with a 6.79. He beat Leroy Goldstein in round one, 6.64/218.96 to 6.69/191. In round two, Don Cain got to him with a holeshot, 6.66/207 to Tom's 6.60/221.67. The team did not run at the Ontario Supernationals.

Eventual winner, Don Prhdomme, took him out in round two, 6.61/189 to 6.952/169.49. In May, he was at Atco for its Funny Car Factory Showdown. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 6.82/209.30 defeated Al Hanna's 7.09/197 in the "Eastern Raider" Pinto. He improved to 6.74/207.85 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to stop eventual winner Pee Wee Wallace's 6.58/210. At the NHRA Division 1 opener held at Englishtown, Prock set Low ET in the opening round with his 6.67/213.27 that beat a crossed-up Arnie Swensen. He was slightly late off the line in the semifinal, and his 6.94/209.38 lost to Bob Lagana's 6.97/211 in Ron Leaf's Vega. His next stop was at Maple Grove on May 11 for the Dutch Classic. He didn't stay long as he lost to Roy Harris, who was driving "Jungle Jim" Liberman's second car in the opening round. The following week (May 19), Tom was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the second NHRA Division 1 race. Prock had set Low ET at 6.76 on his way to the final. There he ran Wallace for the title. The two had a great race, but Wallace's 6.79/209 got the better of the "Custom Body's" 6.84/203.61. Prock's 6.523/222.77 qualified #6 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. In round one, his 6.579/221.13 beat Paul Radici's off-pace 7.04/173. He had problems in round two and shut down to a 10.21 against eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.86/180. Shortly after that (June 22), he was at Maple Grove for the third NHRA Division 1 race. Eighteen cars had shown for the eight-car field, and he qualified #6. In the opening round of competition, his 6.56/217.91 fell to Al Segrini's 6.54/220. Connecticut held a six-car show that had all six cars make three runs. In Tom's first race, his quicker 6.63/218.44 lost to Roy Harris' 6.68/213. He defeated Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in his second race with a 6.81/184.72. He also won his last race with a 6.99 that beat Harris' 7.07. Tom's 6.63 was good for Low ET of the meet. New England hosted an eight-car show where the cars had difficulty "hooking up." Prock qualified #7 with a 7.73/114. The "bump" was 7.86, and Raymond Beadle and Harris were among the non-qualifiers. Even though Prock picked up to a 6.94/162 in the opening round, he lost to Russell Long's 6.64/214. On July 3, he raced at Englishtown's Funny Car Spectacular event. Twelve cars were competing, and after the first round, the four lowest ETs advanced to the semifinal. Prock's 6.61/215.82 over Bill Leavitt was the slowest of the four cars that advanced. In the semifinal, his 6.68/211.26 beat Tommy Grove's ailing 10.24. He lined up beside the Vega of Raymond Beadle in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.72/213.77 finished second best to Beadle's 6.65/192. He was back in Englishtown in the middle of the month for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.564/222.77 qualified #10, but in round one, he slowed to a 6.863/190.67 that lost to Don Schumacher's 6.32/217. He returned to Maple Grove on July 25 for its All-American Series event. It was a sixteen-car field, but in the first round, his 6.63/204.08 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.45/205. A couple of days later, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. In the opening round, Prock's 6.95/213.27 defeated Kosty Ivanof's 7.03/193, but he fouled away a 6.80/214 in the semifinal against Snow. The "Custom Body" team was at Niagara International for an eight-car show early in August. Once again, Prock fouled, this time in the first round, with a 7.10/201.79. His opponent, Denny Savage, driving the "Hawaiian," advanced with a 6.79/190. Tom later returned for a consolation race against Schumacher, which he won with a 6.79/196. Prock and his crew worked really hard at Connecticut Dragway for the New England Summer Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car show, and Tom soloed with a 6.54/223.88 (Top Speed) in the first round when Ron Leaf's Vega broke. He blew the rear end in round two while beating Jimmy King with a 6.58/207.85. Prock and his crew had to swap out another rear end to make the semifinal. The car broke yet another rear end in that race, and Tom lost to Al Segrini. It was then off to New York National for the PRO National Challenge race. Jim Nicoll lost fire in the opening round, so Prock soloed at 6.74/174.08. In the second round, his 6.66/166.35 fell to Don Prudhomme's 6.29/186. Tom was the fifth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.568/223.32. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. Ran 6.57 at Indy US Nationals 9/74, 6.87 Gainesville, 6.52 Columbus, 6.56 Englishtown. Ran 214.20 at Lebanon Valley in August.

Notes: Tom qualified #4 at Pomona with his best NHRA speed of the year, 6.320/227.84. He fell off to an 8.93/92 in round one, that fell to Charlie Therwhanger's 6.40/212. Prock qualified #12 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.55/221.13. He reached the final by beating Gordie Bonin in the first round, with a 6.62/224.43, and in round two, he fouled away a 6.68 but got a second chance when his opponent, Kosty Ivanof, crossed the centerline. He stopped Raymond Beadle's 6.78 in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals with a 6.68. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme, but Prudhomme's engine was hurting. So Prock was too single for the win, but his car broke a rear end. Both teams were given extra time to repair. Tom could not repair, so the "Snake" spit and puttered to a 6.52/172 for the victory. His next race was the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood. There a 6.56 qualified #4 in the eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.67 beat Shirl Greer. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinals. He won a best of three match race against Ivanof in New England. In the first race of the match, Prock lost a blower, and Kosty won with a 6.71, but Tom came back to win the next two rounds and the match with a best of 6.74. He was at Atco for the CARS Magazine race, but he lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, when he had problems and shut down to 9.03/130.62. More problems followed at Columbus. Tom qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.56/220.04, but in his first-round race against Dale Emery, the car coughed up its blower and caught fire. Prock got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was badly burned. It wasn't long before the team was up and running again, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Prock put the car into the field with a 6.55/220.04 (#13). He beat Bob Pickett driving Mickey Thompson's Grand Am in the first round, and a 6.66/222.77 in round two stopped Tom McEwen's 6.86/189. In the semifinals, he ran Ivanof, and a 6.64/210.77 put Kosty's 6.78/222 on the trailer. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and once again, the car let him down. Tom slowed to 11.49 in a runner-up finish to Liberman's 6.49. He did win the Englishtown Free Girls Funny Car night event, a final round 6.43 (Low ET) at 194.80 beat Dodger Glenn's 6.69/218 in the final. Tom made a third NHRA National event final at the Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 6.48/223.32, just behind Prudhomme's 6.46/207. These two would meet in the final. Prock's first-round 6.54 beat Bonin and a semifinal 6.45/217.39 took out Pat Foster's tire-smoking 7.08/221 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In the final, Prock slowed to 7.08/121.08 in a loss to Prudhomme's 6.45/224. The team was the fourth alternate at Indy, running 6.486/225.56. They qualified #5 at Seattle (6.446/223.38) but lost a close round one race via holeshot to surprising local Richard Rogers, 6.61/218.44 to 6.60/198.23. Tom qualified #4 at Ontario for the World Finals with a 6.230/222.77. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett, 6.66/168 to 7.10/225, but broke against John Lombardo in round two. Tom ran 6.25/225.00 at the Orange County International Raceway Manufacturer's Meet 11/75. AKA Utica Flash. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: Tom debuted his new Sarte-built car at Phoenix on January 25 for the Winter Classic. He qualified at 6.34/220.04 behind Gary Burgin and Don Prudhomme. Bill Leavitt fouled against him in the first round, and Prock ran 7.23/141.95 to advance. Unfortunately, the car broke against Dale Emery in round two. At Pomona, he qualified #11 for the NHRA Winternationals at 6.305/220.35. A 6.303/221.13 in the opening round dropped Raymond Beadle's 6.45/215 in the "Blue Max." In round two, Gordie Bonin got crossed up and shut off against him, and Tom ran 6.277/212.76 to advance. In the semi-final, his 6.819/200.89 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.74/225. In 1976, Green Valley Race City track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 mph Funny Car Championships. The first was on February 7/8, and Tom Prock won both days on his first trip ever to the state of Texas. Saturday, Prock beat Jim Nicoll with a 6.14/226, and on Sunday, he stopped Ray Motes with a 6.14/233.76. The second 200 mph FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, March 6/7. Prock won Saturday with a 5.974 at 233.76 mph over Dick Custy. This run officially made Prock the second FC driver in the fives behind Prudhomme's 5.98 at Ontario, CA, on October 12, 1975. Initially, Prock's run was to be entered into the Cragar 5-Second Funny Car Club, but the NHRA intervened. That club eventually included only runs recorded at NHRA National Events and the 5.99 of Pat Foster clocked at a booked-in show at Fremont with the Super Shops Arrow. Meanwhile, Sunday was a rainout and rescheduled for the next series event. At Gainesville, Tom's 6.472/222.22 qualified #9 for the NHRA Gatornationals. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Burgin. Gary went into a wheelstand and shut down while Prock won their race with a 6.39/224.43. He smoked the tires and lost to Shirl Greer in round two with a 12-second shutoff. He then went to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals and won over an eight-car field. His 6.57 in the first round beat Ray Sherman, and another 6.57 at 209.30 took out Beadle's 6.57/220 in the semi-final. He faced Burgin in the final, and Tom got a great light, and his 6.52/219.51 hung on to take the victory over Gary's better 6.43/222. At the end of March, he was at Warner-Robins for the NHRA Division 2 opener. He ran 6.76/200.89 to qualify second to Greer's 6.60/213. These two would meet in the final. In round one, Prock's 6.62/210.28 beat Willie Borsch, followed by a 6.59/203.16 to beat Larry Fullerton, who had his 'chute fall out. But Prock's car broke in the final, and Greer soloed for the win. The third 200 mph FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event was different as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Tom Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. Tom was the first alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.636/216.34. When the '76 AHRA Nationals started on Friday, July 2, Gordon Mineo led the sixteen-car FC field at 6.09/225.56, followed by Dale Emery in the new Burkhart Monza at 6.21/214. On Saturday, rain left teams with only one more session, and Mineo remained on top with few changes in the field. On Sunday, hot weather kept Mineo still the leader at 6.09. Prock moved to second ahead of Emery, and Hoover moved to fourth, followed by Snow and Paul Gordon. On Monday, Prock beat Larry Gould, Snow, and Hoover to face McEwen in the final. Prock won with a 6.12/236.84. Prock ran Low ET and Top Speed of 6.08/236.84 against Snow. Tom qualified #3 at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.272/230.17. He took a 7.024/138.46 win over a fouling Raymond Beadle at 6.56/222. But he did not show against Dodger Glenn. Tom qualified #2 at NHRA Sanair at 6.350/225.56. He won round one over Pee Wee Wallace, 6.43/219.51 to 6.64/210.77, and ran 6.36/218.97 to win round two when Tom McEwen didn't show. In the final, his solid 6.32/230.76 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.17/235. At Indy, Tom qualified #8 at 6.162/231.95. In round one, he ran 6.244/223.32 to beat Stan Bowman's 6.44/205. Gary Burgin got the best of him in round two, however, 6.21/238 to 6.521/180.36. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year. AKA Utica Flash. We formerly listed 237.46 for Tom this year. We originally thought that was great AHRA Green Valley and are updating it based on the GVRC report. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner

Notes: Ran 6.34 at Pomona, 6.45 at Gainesville, 6.25 at Columbus, 6.31 at Englishtown, 6.15 at Indy, 6.26 at Detroit, 6.21 at Ontario. | Tom qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," in the first round. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.45 qualified #8, and once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Bob Pickett. He was at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Dale Pulde. Shortly after that, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.98/138. In the first round, he improved to 6.43/223.88 to beat Al Bergler's 6.67/213. A 6.49/203.61 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Pulde who won with a 6.23/235. Tom went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event held in late May. On May 29, 22 cars ran the first-round, with only the four Low ET cars advancing into the semifinals. Prock didn't run quick enough to make the final four. The following day (May 30), they ran again, and this time six cars would advance. Prock almost made it as both he and Denny Savage ran 6.47, but Prock's was a tick slower at 6.476, and once again, he sat out the final eliminations. A week later (June 5), he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There, his 6.50/226.14 qualified #6. He ran 10.10 to advance in the first round, when Pickett lost a driveshaft and, in the semifinals, he ran a good 6.53/213.32, but it wasn't good enough as he lost to the eventual winner Beadle’s 6.46/210. The team's next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/228.42 qualified #10, but Prock lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. A week later (June 19) found the "Detroit Tiger" at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Prock qualified #5 6.62, but he ran a sub-par 6.97 in round one, that lost to Donnie Plunkett's 6.91. He did better at Union Grove on July 4th for the IHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.37 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.63/204.54 beat Shirl Greer's 6.65/199. In the semifinals, Prock's 6.52/206.89 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.34/214.

Notes: Tom started the season by qualifying #8 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran a first-round 7.35/169 that lost to Carl Swanson's 7.33/216. He showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and qualified #8 with a 6.338/229.59. A first-round 6.49/224 advanced when opponent Ezra Boggs was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In round two, both he and Gordie Bonin had traction problems, and Tom came out on top with a 7.36/217 over Bonin's quicker 7.30/222. In the semifinals, he again lost traction, and his 7.41/143 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.73/225. Shortly after that, he made a stop at Green Valley Raceway for its '78 season opener. Ten cars were running, and his 6.27/229.67 beat Les Cassidy in the opening round. But he hurt the engine on the run and could not run after that. He qualified #12 at the Gatornationals with a 6.48/221 but lost to Bonin's 6.43/233 in the first round with a 6.46/226.70. The following week (March 19), LaPlace held the NHRA Division 4 opener. It was an eight-car field, and Prock's 6.73/217.39 qualified #4. He improved by a tenth in the first round, where his 6.63/213.77 defeated Dennis Piranio. A off-pace 7.18/147.54 in the semifinal, lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.37/221. In April, he competed at an eight-car show and Suffolk. He failed to reach the finals there. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.31/227.27 qualified #13. He beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.33/229.00. Unfortunately, in round two, he shut off to a 9.52/101.80 against Don Prudhomme's 6.10/240. He finished runner-up to Gary Burgin at the UDRA North American Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. Another runner-up finish came at the "NED" Gold Cup Championships at Empire Dragway near Rochester, New York. He had set Low ET at 6.44 before losing to Bruce Larson in the final.

Notes: Tom qualified #14 at Pomona at 6.369/223.88. He beat Bob Pickett in round one with a 6.227/223.88 when Pickett broke. In round two, it was Tom's turn to break on the burnout, sending Tripp Shumake on to the semifinals. That was Tom's last race in NHRA competition. Prock was at Maple Grove for its Spring All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show, and despite having piston problems, Prock and his crew chief, Joey Oster, persisted to win. His best was a 6.41/215.31 in the opening round over Rodalyn Knox. In the final, he faced Dick Rosberg, who had set Low ET and Top Speed. But the "Fighting Irish" car had to shut down on the line due to a leaking oil pump gasket. Prock made a 6.64/184.80 solo for the victory. In June, he was in Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and despite losing in the first round to Tom McEwen, he got back into the show where his 6.70/200.00 in the semifinal lost to John Pott's 6.64/209. They sold the car to Al Segrini, and it became the Super Brut.
