Notes: Per Ivo in the September 2012 issue of Hot Rod Deluxe, Prudhomme made the first official runs in this car at San Fernando Drag Strip (CA) in July 1961. Ivo rarely drove the car himself, he reported. Prudhomme shared driving duties with Tom McCourry and, in Midwest dates, Ron Pelligrini. - RT |

Notes: Won Winternationals and Indy. Great year. | Don started the year at Lions on January 16 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify, running a best of 7.99/193.12 that was good for third alternate. The next day (January 17), he was at Pomona for another eight-car show. This time he qualified, but in the first round, he fouled against eventual winner Norm Weekly in the "Frantic Four" car. Prudhomme fouled out in the first round, again at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.47, but his red-light advanced James Warren into the second round. A week later, on February 7, he was a happy man as he won the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. A 7.80/204.54 qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field. He soloed with a 7.87/173.74 in the first round, when Willie Redford lost fire in the "Carroll Brothers" car. Warren fouled out against him in round two and Don's 7.77/175.78 advanced. In the semifinals, Rick Stewart also fouled against him and Prudhomme ran 7.75/204.08 to get into the final. His opponent was alternate Bill Alexander who got into the field for Ron Rivero and made it all the way to the final. There, Ron's 7.92/198 lost to the "Snake's" 7.76/201.34. This was Prudhomme's first NHRA National event victory. The "Hawaiian" was at Kingdon for a sixteen-car show on February 21 and Don was running well, beating Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 7.73/201.78, but he failed to reach the finals. Riverside held an eight-car race on March 21 and Don ran 7.94/193.12 to win his first-round race. In the semifinals, his 7.96/195.64 lost to Larry Faust's quick-leaving 8.03/201. On March 28, he was back at Pomona for the big UDRA race. Unfortunately, an 8.01/187.50 in the first round, lost to Stewart's 7.85/199. Prudhomme set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Lions on April 17 for a sixteen-car show with a 7.78/197.80. He beat Frank Pedregon in the first round, with a 7.87/179.64 and a 7.80/198.66 in round two, beat Bob Downey in the A&W car. But in the semifinals, he fouled against Roy Thode. A best of three match race between the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen was held at Lions on May 1. Don slept in the first race and his 7.56/204.08 lost to McEwen's 7.82/178. In the second race, Prudhomme evened the score by running 7.76/202.24 to beat the "Goose" who shut off to an 8.25/123. But in the final deciding run, once again Don was slow off the line and his quicker 7.62/203.60 lost the race and the match to Tom's 7.84/196. He won the Arizona State Championships at Beeline, setting Low ET as well at 7.60. Another win came on May 23 at the Fifth Annual California State Championships at Half Moon Bay. He qualified #4 with a 7.79 and advanced past a fouling Denny Miliani in the first round. In the semifinals, a 7.68/199.54 got him into the final against low qualifier (7.50) Kenny Safford in the "B&M Tork Master." The race never materialized as Safford lost fire and Prudhomme soloed for the win with a 7.75/203.60. Fontana had over 40 cars attempt to qualify for its Memorial Day Championships. It was a two-day show and on Saturday, May 29, Don qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.70/203.60. He beat Thode in the first round, with a 7.57/205.94. In round two, he lost a motor and the race to Mike Sorokin in the "Surfers" car. The following day with a new engine installed, Don fouled in the first round, against Tommy Dyer. In June, Don was back at Fontana for a best of three match race against Sorokin. It was a good match with Don winning the first race with a 7.56/207.36 beating Mike's 7.78/202. The "Surfers" car won the second race with a 7.64/204 beating the "Hawaiian's" 7.84/190.26. But in the final race, Prudhomme won the match by resetting the track record to 7.46 at 206.88 over Mike's 7.77/203. |

Notes: Also 7.49/208.37 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66 and 7.59/209.30 at Lions 2/01/66 and 7.68 Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. | The B&M TorkMaster was NOT a two-speed transmission. It was just a fluid coupling to replace a clutch. - Norman Hechtkoff | After driving Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" with great success in '65, Prudhomme decided to go it alone for '66. He started by purchasing the "B&M TorkMaster" car and then turning to Dave Zeuschel for the engine. The chassis was a 155" Race Car Engineering product. The bodywork was done by Bob Sorrell. Dave started with a 392 Hemi. It was stock sized, but used a C&T crank. He ran M/T rods and 7:1 pistons, and Engle supplied the cam. The 2" valves for both intake and exhaust came from Donovan. The Don Hampton reworked GMC 6/71 blower sat on a Cragar manifold and Cragar was also the choice for the blower drive. Up top sat an Enderle fuel injection unit. According to the July '66 issue of Drag Racing USA, the "Snake" had run a best of 7.36/214.76 up to that point. | Don started the '66 season at Carlsbad on Jan 9 for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.71/210.28, but he lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 in the 32-car show with a 7.68. An improved 7.59/210.28 beat Tom McEwen's 7.69 in the first round, but in round two, the "Snake's" 7.62 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.53. Everyone was at Lions the following week (February 26) for the UDRA Winternationals. Don qualified well, running a 7.59/209.30 for the #4 spot in the 32-car field, but he lost before the finals. Prudhomme didn't do too well on March 5 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. On Saturday his 7.77/178.21 lost to Tommy Allen's 7.55/204 in the first round. Only six cars showed up to run at Half Moon Bay on March 20 and Don was one of them. He qualified #1 with a 7.78/211.82 (Top Speed) and in round one, his 7.66/211.76 beat Roy Thode's 7.79/185 in Ted Gotelli's car. In the semifinals, he ran 7.87/159.01 on the "odd-lot" solo. He was to face Don Garlits in the final, but Garlits had blown his engine in his semifinal win over John Edmunds so Edmunds was reinstated for the final. Unfortunately for Don, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.59/208.80 in the final, but it was accompanied by a red light and John won with an 8.10/156. Prudhomme did get to race Garlits on April 10 at Cecil County for a best two out of three match race. The "Snake" took the match two straight when Garlits fouled in the first race and was just outrun in the second. |

Notes: 1967 NHRA Division 7 champ. Ran 6.92 all time quickest at the time at Bristol Springnationals 6/67, which Don won. Also cited as going faster than 226. We need to confirm the 230. | Prudhomme had driven his own car in '66 with limited success. After having driven the "Hawaiian" in '65, he was used to winning more. So, when Lou Baney offered him a well-financed ride, Don jumped at the chance. At the AHRA Winternationals, a 7.75 qualified #6 in the 32-car field, but in the first round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, giving Steve Carbone the win. Don was at an eight-car show at Irwindale on January 29. He ran a 7.27 to qualify second and in the first round, he advanced when Dave Condit fouled. In the semifinals, Don fouled against Mike Snively. A best of 7.52 failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #23 at Famoso for the March Meet with a 7.35. He ran a best of 7.26 before losing to a Mike Sorokin holeshot in round three with his 7.35/206.42 losing to Mike's 7.16/199. Carlsbad held an eight-car show on March 5, where 23 cars attempted to qualify. Prudhomme just made the show with a 7.24/187.10 for the #8 spot. He lost to Carbone in the first round. On April 9 at the HRM Championships, Don's 7.78/138.67 advanced in the first round, when Kelly Brown fouled. In round two, his 7.18/217.96 beat Mike Sorokin's 7.20/187 in the "Hawaiian II.†But in the third round, he fouled against Larry Faust. On May 7 for the Carlsbad Division 7 opener, Don ran a 7.05/216.86 over Leroy Goldstein in the first round, and a semifinal 6.92 (Low ET) at 215.82 beat Mike Snively. In the final, he raced Tom McEwen. A 7.16 at a shut off 169 got the win when McEwen fouled. He won the next Division 7 race at Kingdon on May 21. He ran a 7.30/196.80 in the first round, and a semifinal 7.65/201.60 beat Ken Safford's 7.98/198 in Ted Gotelli's car. In the final, he set Low ET with a 7.31/201 beating Frank Martinez. He met the "King" Jerry Ruth in a best of three match race at Puyallup on June 4. In the first race, Don set a new 7.27 track record at 212.26 in beating Ruth's 7.43/206. Jerry came back to win the second race over the "Snake's" 7.50. But Prudhomme wrapped up the match in the third race with a 7.20/210.28 beating Ruth's 7.44/204. The next day (June 5), Puyallup held a sixteen-car show that Don also won. In the final, he was matched up against Ruth again. This time, Jerry fouled away a 7.44 and Don motored on for the win with a 7.56. Don's biggest win of '67 came next at the NHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He ran a 6.99/221.04, a shut off 8.62, a 6.97/220.58 and a final round Low ET of 6.92/222.76 to win over fellow SOHC campaigner Pete Robinson in the final. These were the first six-second runs turned in at a NHRA National event. On June 24, Stardust Raceway hosted a Division 7 race. Prudhomme made it into the semifinals before losing to McEwen. The "Mongoose's" 7.25 beat the "Snake's" 7.37. He ran McEwen at a match race at Irwindale on July 1 and beat him two straight. He clocked a 7.18/216.34 and a 7.19/223.32 for the win. On July 15, for the PDA Championships at Lions, Don won the event, beating John Mulligan in the final. His best times were 7.16/212.26. He won the Division 7 race at OCIR on July 22. At the US Nationals, Don qualified #6 with a 6.88/222.22, but he fouled to James Warren in the third round. The Division 7 final was run at Irwindale on September 30. Don lasted until the semifinal, where an off pace 7.53 lost to Warren's 6.99. Earlier Don had run 7.00/221.12 over Sorokin in the first round, and a 7.15 in round two. He finished the season with a runner-up finish at the NHRA World Finals. There he qualified #6 at 7.16/201.78 before losing to Bennie Osborn in the final. |

Notes: The Shelby's Super Snake dragster was a deal in 1968. Shelby sponsored the Prudhomme-driven Baney Special. Don Prudhomme and Lou Baney entered '68 with hopes to run as well as they had in '67. Ed Pink continued to build the SOHC engines for the team, and Carroll Shelby stepped up with sponsorship. Things started well for the team when they traveled to Carlsbad on January 14 for a best two-out-of-three match against Don Garlits. Prudhomme won the first race with a holeshot 7.01/223.86 over Garlits, who lost a rod on the run and ran 6.95/209. Garlits was done for the day as the damage was too much to repair. Tom McEwen was the backup car for the match, but he too had broken earlier, so the "Snake" soloed to a tire-smoking 7.21/226.70 to win the match. A week later (January 21), he was at Beeline in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. Traction was not the best, as Don qualified #10 with a 7.43. He ran a 7.56/210.28 in the first round to beat Bob Mayer's quicker 7.44/192. He beat Don Cook in round two and had an easy win in round three (32-car field). Chuck Kurzawa fouled against him in the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals. This put him into the final against Pete Robinson, but Robinson had broken. So Prudhomme got to single for the win. Prudhomme and Baney had a big decision to make, as M&H offered contingency money to racers who won using their tires. Baney was a Goodyear supporter, so the team elected to remain on the Goodyears in the final. Don ran 7.25/221.12 for the victory. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #20 in the 32-car show with a 7.19/187.50. In the first round, he picked up to 7.04/222.76 to beat Dave Powers at 7.15/214. In the second round, he advanced when Hank Westmoreland fouled. The "Snake" made a rare mistake in round three when he was on his way to a win over Dwight Salisbury, but he pulled the 'chute early, and his 7.14/186.32 lost to Dwight's 7.19. At the Stardust Open in Las Vegas, Prudhomme qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field, but he lost to a holeshot by Tom Larkin in the first round. On March 3, the team attended the PDA Championships. Don qualified with a 7.07, and he lasted until round two when the dragster pulled two wheelies off the line, and he shut off, losing to McEwen. He also lost to McEwen at the next race. It was the Bakersfield March Meet, and Don ran 7.11 to qualify #18 in the 32-car field. A first-round 7.22/202.70 lost to Tom's 7.02/202. On April 66, Don was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. In the opening round, both he and his opponent, Joe Lee, had problems and shut off. Lee won their coasting contest. He faced James Warren in a best-of-three match on May 11 at OCIR. The team of Barney and Prudhomme had been undefeated in OCIR's "King of the Hill" competition since November 18, '67. They debuted a new Don Long-built car here for their match against Warren. In their first race, James scored first with his 7.16/221, beating the "Snake's" 7.29/222.76. Don came back to even the score with a 7.24/218.44 to beat Warren's tire-smoking 7.74/177. In the deciding race, Prudhomme smoked the tires to a 7.33/176.47, losing to James' winning 7.11/229. Prudhomme made his first Eastern Appearance of the season on June 11 at Maple Grove for a match race against Ron Rivero. It was not a good day for the Ford-powered car as it had problems and lost two straight. Rivero had held the track record at 7.12 coming into this race. In their first match-up, Don's 7.67/153.84 lost to Ron's 7.50/204. In the second race, an ailing 8.02/134.55 lost to the "K&G" fueler's 7.45/193. Prudhomme had lost the match but attempted to come out and make one more run to try and break the track record. He ran a decent 7.30 at only 176.12, but it was nowhere near the record. A couple of days later June 3, he was at Capitol for another best-of-three match. This time, he faced "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. Once again, the SOHC-powered car came out on the losing end. Garlits set a 6.96 track record at 221 while beating Prudhomme's 7.19/185.94 in their first race, and Garlits won two straight with a 6.97/225 in their second race that covered the "Snake's" shut off 9.36/108.56. The car performed much better at New York National in June 99 for the Smokers Meet. Only two cars topped 230 here; one was Prudhomme's, and the other was the "Ramchargers." Don reached the final against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Mike got the win with his 6.92/227, beating Don's 6.98/198.22. There was disappointment in the camp when the team failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals at Englishtown. Don had won this race the previous season, when it was held at Bristol. The team even took off their Goodyear rubber and attempted M&H's for a final do-or-die attempt to make the field. After that series of disappointing runs, Don was sure to be happy to be back in victory lane at OCIR on July 6 for its Nitro Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and Don's 7.26/217.38 qualified #5 (there were no sixes run as Low ET was a 7.05). An opening round 7.57/197.36 beat Bob Mayer's 7.68/205, and in round two, his 7.17/220.58 beat Kelly Brown's 7.45/185 in the "Dean Engineering" car. Another 7.17 at 219.44 in the semifinals beat Tom Toler's 7.58/203 and moved him into the final against Jim Dunn, who had just set Low ET with his semifinal win. But Dunn shut off with problems in the final, and the "Snake" ran 7.22/220.58 for the win. He was also awarded the Mike Sorokin Memorial Award at this event. It was an award given and voted on by his peers. A week later (July 12, 2012), the "Snake" was at Carlsbad for the third NHRA Division 7 race. His 7.22/212.26 lost to eventual winner Gerry Glenn's 7.18/221 in the opening round of eliminations. Things didn't go very well at the PDA Championships held at Lions in July 2020. There, a 6.99/223.88 qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field, and in the first round, a fuel pump drive broke, giving his opponent, Chris Karamesines, a solo into round two.; Photo: "Drag Racing Heroes: Dragsters" website - MB |

Notes: Ran 6.68 low qualifier at 69 Springs. Ran 6.75 low qualifier at 69 Bakersfield March Meet. Runner-up to John Mulligan at '69 Winternationals, Top Fuel winner at '69 Indy over Kelly Brown (with shorty body after late summer crash repairs). The photo shown here is actually from Indy 1970. Did Prudhomme run 227 at Indy? | After racing Lou Baney's Ford powered car for the past couple of years, Don struck out on his own for '69. This car was slated to be Roland Leong's "Hawaiian", but when Roland decided to go Funny Car racing instead, Prudhomme bought the car. He started the year by qualifying #12 at the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Billy Tidwell in round one, with a 7.21/200.44, but he lost to Mike Snively driving the "Beaver Bros." car in round two. Don qualified #2 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.92/218. Pete Robinson fouled against him in the first round, and Prudhomme advanced with a 6.95/202.70. In the second round, a 6.99/213.78 advanced. He picked up to a 6.89 in round three over Cliff Zink. In the semifinals, a 6.93/217.39 beat Jim Dunn. He lost the final to John Mulligan's 6.95/211 when he smoked the tires and shut down to an 8.52/126.93. Don followed that runner-up performance with a win at the Stardust Open at Las Vegas on February 16. He had only qualified #15 in the 16-car show with a 7.24, but he steadily picked up the pace and in round two he beat Jim Nicoll with a 6.91/216. In the semifinals, a 6.90/200.44 beat a blower popping Tom Larkin. In the final, he faced fellow finalist from the Winternationals, Mulligan. This time, the roles were reversed with Don's 6.94/216.86 getting the win over John's 7.10/211. Prudhomme qualified #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.75 (Low ET) and in the first round, his 6.85/222.22 beat a tire-smoking Marvin Schwartz. He ran an easy solo in the second round when Tom Hoover lost a blower on the line. But in round three, both he and Jim Dunn ran 6.93's (Prudhomme's at 218.97) with Jim getting the win. On March 16 he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. A 6.95 qualified #5. In the first round, he beat Hoover's 7.16/211 with a 6.90/215.31. Another 6.90/215.31 in round two beat Norm Wilcox. A solo 7.63/142.63 advanced in round three when Hank Westmoreland shut off. But in the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.16/220.58 that lost to Steve Carbone's 6.82/220. Don ended the month of March with a win on the 29th at the final OCIR All-Pro event. He qualified #3 with a 6.98/220.58. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.84/221.12 win over Tom McEwen. In the semifinals, he got past a motor exploding Mulligan. In the final, he beat Carbone. On April 26 he faced Connie Kalitta's Boss 429 powered car in a best of three match at York US 30. Don beat Kalitta's ailing Ford powered car three straight with times of 6.82/210.76,6.87/210.76 and 6.84/207.84. Prudhomme got some very doubtful times at Gary, Indiana's US 30 on May 25. He was clocked at 6.10 and then backed it up with a 6.26. It was interesting to note that these times were reported even though these were obviously inaccurate. A sixteen-car UDRA race was held at US 131, Martin, Michigan, on May 30. Prudhomme made it into the semifinals by running 6.91/200.88 and 7.00/199 before shutting off on the line and losing to eventual winner Mulligan. He was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 8. There he qualified #9, and he beat low qualifier Carbone in the first round, with a 6.96. In round two his 6.97/204.54 beat an out of shape Dave Powers while a 6.92/212.76 in the semifinals put a stop to Preston Davis. In the final he came up against Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" car. Don lost to a strong 6.80 from Goldstein. A week later (June 15), Prudhomme was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. He ran 6.68 (Low ET of the meet) at 221.13 to qualify first in the 32-car field. A first-round 6.71/219.50 beat Davis while he slowed to an easy 7.29 in round two when Tidwell fouled. James Warren fouled against Don in round three and the "Snake" advanced with a 6.90/172.74. The semifinals turned out to be an interesting race for Don as he faced the car he had campaigned the year before, Baney's SOHC Ford powered car driven by Kelly Brown. The race was a good one with Brown's 6.78/213 beating Don's close 6.79/215.31. On June 21 he was at Cecil County for the East-West Meet. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, Don's 6.85/212.76 beat Don Garlits' 6.98/218. In the semifinals, he lost a close one to Mulligan, Don's 6.88/213.28 lost to John's 6.86. Another East vs West race was run on July 6 at Epping. Prudhomme reached the final where he faced Jimmy King. He had problems and slowed to 7.49/161 while King got the victory with a 6.84/182. |

Notes: The Snake's first funny car. Ron Scrima exhibition Engineering chassis, Keith Black 426 with a B&M TorqueFlite. Jay Howell drove this car at '70 Indy Nationals, qualifying with a 6.99 while Prudhomme was running and winning Top Fuel Eliminator. Prudhomme also ran 6.94 at Union Grove, and 7.07 at 212.26. | exhibition Engineering built the 118" chassis and Keith Black built the 1,800 hp 426 Hemi. The Fiberglass body was a product of Fiberglass Ltd. It used an Engle cam and M/T rods with Forgedtrue pistons. A B&M modified TorqueFlite delivered the power to the rear wheels. Don debuted this car at Beeline on January 25 for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.68 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.57 in the "Hawaiian." He failed to qualify the 'Cuda at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, so he concentrated on his Top Fuel effort instead. On February 14, he was at Lions for an eight-car show that saw 30 cars attempt to qualify. Prudhomme qualified #1 with a 7.23/206. He set Low ET and Top Speed (both track records) in the first round, with a 7.18/208.81 that beat Rich Siroonian's 7.55/171 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. In the semifinals, he faced the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen and his 7.20/207.36 moved into the final over Tom's out of shape shut off run. In the final, it was the "Snake" who had problems and shut down to a 12.74/53 mph run that finished runner-up to Pat Minick's 7.19/204 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." A week later (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 7.30/206.89 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.51/114.94 advanced when Charlie Allen fouled, but, in the semifinals, Gene Conway stepped up to a best-ever 7.27/201 to beat Don's 7.50/194.38. In early March, he was back at Lions for the second AHRA Grand American race. This was the race where Don Garlits lost part of his foot when his clutch exploded in the Top Fuel final. The accident damaged the Christmas tree and the Funny Car final had to be flag started. Prudhomme was in that final, facing Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Danny got the victory with a 7.25/201 over Don's 7.41/204. His next appearance in the Funny Car was at a best of three match race against Tommy Grove at Capitol on April 11. Grove won the first race with a holeshot 7.50/193 over Don's quicker 7.35/202.24. Prudhomme came back to win the match by winning the last two races with times of 8.25/190.66 over Grove's out of shape 8.53/167, and 7.64/193.96 when Tom's transmission let go on the line. He was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where in the first round, both he and Malcolm Durham ran 7.65 with Durham getting the win. Prudhomme got back into the show on the "break rule" and advanced past round two when Ron Umbach fouled against him. In the semifinals, his 7.86 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.16. At the fourth AHRA Grand American race at Frontier International Raceway, he finally got a victory. His times were not that impressive with a 7.80/187.50 winning in his first-round race and in round two he actually lost with his 7.84/181.08 falling to Howell's 7.69/185. But he got back in on the "break rule" and faced Howell again in the semifinals. This time Jay lost a transmission in his Mustang and Don advanced into the final with a 10.36. His final round foe was Snow and Gene fouled giving Prudhomme the win. ET from (11/70 Popular Hot Rodding) mph from Union Grove WI (8/01/70 Drag News) |

Notes: This is Don's first Buttera Cuda that made its debut in late 1970 replacing his Ron Scrima built car. This car was originally painted yellow using the same design that was on Don's first Hot Wheels car. Don was low qualifier at the 1970 NHRA Hot Wheels Supernationals with a 7.044/200.00, losing to Richard Tharp in the first round, (Don's Top Fuel car also qualified number 1 with Butch Maas at the wheel). At the 1970 OCIR Manufacturer's Championships Don ran consistent 6 second ETs (6.93/6.91/6.89) and had Top Speed of the meet (217.91 mph) while helping Plymouth win the overall team championship. Don also won the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on 12/12/70, running a track record 6.92 ET at 192.70. This car was painted white with red flames for the start of the 1971 season and ran successfully for almost two years. |

Notes: Won dramatic US Nationals event over Jim Nicoll's clutch-splitting crash at the top end. Ran a string of 6.40s, eventually tying John Mulligan's 6.43 all time quickest run from Indy 1969. Also ran 6.52 at Fremont. | Don qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.82. He lasted until the third round where a wheelstand against Tommy Ivo cost him the race. Prudhomme was spending more time with his FC, but he did show up at Fremont in his Dragster for the Northern Nationals. Sixty-six cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field. Don got in easily and ran a 6.55/220.58 over Gary Cochran's 6.85/215 in the first round. In the second round, a 6.59/220.58 beat John Wiebe's 6.85/222. In the semifinals, Don set Low ET of the meet with a 6.52/222.22, but he fouled and lost to Ron Hampshire. |

Notes: This is the Snake's first Buttera car, first raced at '70 Ontario Supernationals. Painted yellow for the remainder of 1970, the white paint job followed in early '71. (This is the car that flew through the lights in Seattle on fire). The white car ran 6.62 at 226 at OCIR in early '71, all-time bests for FCs to that point. Also ran then second quickest ever ET at 6.67 at the Northwest National Open 71. Said to be trying for the sport's first 6.5 when he flew it through the lights on fire. | Don started the '71 season with a runner-up finish at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He worked his way to the final by beating Charlie Proite's "Telstar" in the first round, with a 7.34/189.06. In round two, a 7.06/214.78 beat Paula Murphy's 7.40/204. The semifinals saw him dip into the sixes with a 6.98/206.42 over Kenney Goodell. In the finals, he ran Gene Snow and Snow set Low ET with a 6.83/212 to take the victory over the "Snake's" 6.99/214.78. On January 10 he was at Lions for the AHRA Grand American. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Don's 6.78 was third among the "unseeded" entries. A first-round 6.88/212.26 beat Mart Higginbotham's 7.19/205. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in the second round and let Leroy Goldstein advance. Prudhomme was at the second OCIR All-Pro event and where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.70. An opening round 6.94/187.89 beat Jim Dunn, but in the semifinals, his transmission locked in reverse giving Gene Conway a solo into the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Don qualified pretty far down the list with a 7.28/187.47 (#14). He broke in the first round, and lost to Stan Shiroma in the "Midnight Skulker." The third OCIR All-Pro event was run on February 13. Prudhomme turned in an amazing performance to win. He qualified for the eight-car field with a 6.96/223.88. In the first round, he improved to 6.82/223.88 to beat Dunn. A semifinal 6.71/225.00 beat Gene Snow's 7.10/169. He ran Dunn again in the final who had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" twice! There was no denying the "Snake" on this day as in the final he ran an unheard of 6.62/226.13 to win. Around this time, Prudhomme had been driving his Top Fuel car as well as the Funny. At a lot of meets, he ran either one or the other. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, he ran his dragster. On March 21 he was at Fresno for a best of three match race against the "Hawaiian," driven by Butch Maas. Butch won the first race with a 7.08/211 over Don's 7.23/214.28, but Prudhomme came back to even things up by winning the second race with a 6.93/211.26 over the "Hawaiian's" 6.99. In the deciding race, Maas won the match with a 6.88 over the "Snake's" quicker 6.85. Due to this match race being run on the same day as the Gatornationals, Prudhomme was obviously not at Gainesville. Everyone remembers the pictures of Don's 'Cuda on fire on two wheels going through the traps at Seattle. That was on April 11 for the Northwest National Open. Don qualified third behind Maas and Jerry Ruth. He blew a clutch in the semifinals while setting Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.67/221.66 over the "Hawaiian." In the final, he again had problems (to put it mildly), and went through the traps on fire to win with a 6.94 over Dave Condit's 6.98 in the "L. A. Hooker." In May, Prudhomme won the Continental Divide Spring Funny Car race. He beat Art Ward in the final with a new track record 7.470. Martin, Michigan, held an eight-car show over the Memorial Day Weekend and Prudhomme ran well. All eight-cars were to make three runs with the winner being determined by the car that got the most wins. Don had problems and was unable to make his first race, but he came back to win his second with a 7.13/200.89 over Richard Tharp's 7.15/198 in the "Blue Max." He really raised some eyebrows in the third race where he beat Gary Dyer with a 6.62/220.58 (Low ET and Top Speed). |

Notes: The second of three top fuel cars that Prudhomme ran in 1971, this car had a 220-inch John Buttera chassis, a Keith Black Hemi, and a body designed & built by Quinn Epperly and Nye Frank. The car also had Kirby paint and Kelly lettering. It won Best Engineered at the 1971 NHRA Springnationals, but proved too heavy to be competitive. Don ran the car with the wedge body through the summer, but removed the heavy body work by Indy and installed a wing. The highlight for this car came when it lost then-quickest side-by-side race in drag racing history. The race took place at OCIR during the PDA Championships in July. Don ran 6.41/234.98, losing to Rick Ramsey's 6.41/229.50. Qualified at Indy at 6.433. Don replaced this car in November when he took delivery of the 1190 lb. Kent Fuller built "Yellow Feather." |

Notes: This is the third top fuel car Prudhomme ran in 1971. The Kent Fuller built 1190 lbs. "Yellow Feather" debuted November 13th at Lions where it ran 6.47/189. The following weekend at Ontario Motor Speedway during the season ending NHRA Supernationals Don qualified with a 6.80, but withdrew the car in the interest of safety after experiencing top end handling problems. Notes: This is the Snake's Buttera 'Cuda, built in late '72. Ran in black gel coat for a few races, including the Last Drag Race at Lions (where he was runner-up to Tom McEwen) and the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario. Don qualified #4 at the Lions last drag race with a 6.51. He beat Dale Pulde in M/T's broken Grand Am in round one with another 6.51. In round two, Don went 6.66 to beat Dave Condit's 6.73 in the LA Hooker. In round three, Don ran a consistent 6.67 to defeat Omer Carruthers 6.74. The Tentmaker, the Low ET loser of the second round, replaced Billy Meyer, who was late getting to the line. In the final, McEwen's great 6.39 beat Don's 6.97 in another Snake vs. Mongoose showdown. | The car was eventually painted yellow with Carefree Gum as the primary sponsor. He won Funny Car Eliminator at Indy in '73, running a 6.27 best. In '74, he painted it in US Army colors and won Indy again. - TN |
