Notes: Three successive class bests in 1973: 6.35 and 6.27 at Indy (won Funny Car Eliminator over the Ace in the final), then a fantastic 6.16 at the Supernationals. When Don didn't like his new '74 US Army Vega, this car was pulled out of the garage, painted in US Army colors, and won Indy again. 6.29 Green Valley | In 1973, Prudhomme singlehandedly won the team title for Plymouth over a 16-car field at the 5th Annual Manufacturer's Meet at Rockford, Ill. - RT | Photo from 1973 AHRA Grand Nationals, Dragway 42. | Early in '73, Don was still racing his Top Fuel car. He didn't enter his Funny Car in competition at the AHRA or the NHRA Winternationals; he ran in Top Fuel instead. But on March 11, he showed up at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals with his 'Cuda. He qualified #9 and, in the first round, set Low ET of the meet with a 6.45 to beat low qualifier Tom Hoover who ran 6.56. In round two, he faced Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega panel. Don fouled away a 6.60/209.30, giving Brown an easy 7.09 run into the semifinals. The following week, he was at NHRA Gatornationals but was back in the top fuel car. He was back in the Funny Car for the Seattle Northwest Open in April. He ran a 6.43 to qualify, but in the first round, he lost a rod while doing his burnout. On April 11, he was at the AHRA Grand American in Tulsa. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 6.50/226.13 qualified #1. He had a clutch explode during eliminations and hit the guardrail, thus ending his day. The car was wearing black primer from being repaired when he showed up at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships on April 21. He set Top Speed at 230.76, but after making a first-round solo, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified while racing Gerry Glenn. The following week, he was in Seattle for its Northwest Open. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.54/229 (Top Speed), but while doing his burnout for his first-round race against Rich Rogers, a rod let go, and he had to shut down. There were no shortages of places for Don to run as everywhere he raced, a crowd followed. He was at Green Valley for the AHRA Grand American early in May. He qualified #1 at 6.37 and then beat Mart Higginbotham and Dale Pulde (MT Grand Am). He then defeated Don Schumacher in the semifinal with an engine blowing 6.29. He would face Tom Grove in the final. Grove's car failed to fire, so Prudhomme limped it down the track for the win. |

Notes: Prudhomme was spending more and more time behind the wheel of his FC. But in early '73, he was still very active with his Top Fuel car. At the Irwindale Grand Premiere race, he qualified #10 with a 6.55 in the sixteen-car show. He improved to 6.47 in the first round, to beat Dwight Hughes' 6.66. In the second round, he shut off to 8.06/104.65 while his opponent, James Warren, advanced at 6.49/211. Not long after that, he was at OCIR for the second All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.41 qualified #6. Dennis Baca smoked the tires against him in the first round, and the "Snake's" 6.51/212.76 won. In the semifinals, Don's 6.45/201.79 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.30/215 in the "Keeling and Clayton" car. But as luck would have it, Warren had won the other semifinal race but had blown his engine while doing it. The "break rule" was in effect, allowing Prudhomme to return to the show in the final as the Low ET loser from the round before. So once again, Ramsey lined up beside Prudhomme. This time Don's 6.58/223.88 scored the victory over Rick's 6.81/214. A week later (January 28), Don was at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and his 6.13/229.59 qualified #2 behind Don Garlits' 6.09. An opening round 6.39/189.07 beat Glen Brown and he ran 6.21/215 to beat an out-of-shape Herm Petersen in round two. John Stewart's 6.34/196 fell to Prudhomme's 6.18/202 in round three. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.12/224. His next stop was a long one; it was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals that ended up taking three weeks to run. The track was horrible as there was no grip, and the constant rain didn't help matters. On the first qualifying weekend (February 3), Prudhomme showed his know-how on ill track surfaces by running 6.75/217.91 to lead the 32-car field. The time held up for the pole through the rest of qualifying. But eliminations didn't go as well as his 6.88 in the second round lost to Denver Schutz's 6.71. At the third OCIR All-Pro race, Don's 6.53 qualified #6, and his 6.40/210.77 lost to the race's eventual winner Danny Ongais, who beat him with a 6.29/234. Don ran 6.135/226.13 at NHRA Gainesville in March. Handout photo from the 1973 NHRA Winternationals, Pomona, California. |

Notes: The car ran 6.16 under the Care-Free banner. Won the infamous PRO race at NY National with an all-time best of 6.19. Also ran 6.23 at NHRA Summers and 231.95. The 6.01/235 was at a Lebanon Valley match race. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Prudhomme drove this car to Funny Car win at '74 Gators, was upset by Snow at Springs, and defeated Billy Meyer at Indy for back-to-back Indy Funny Car wins. | Regarding Prudhomme at Lebanon Valley in '74. I wasn't there the August night he ran 6.01. I was there a month earlier when he ran 6.16, which was quicker than the national record by a few hundredths, as I recall. So everyone was talking about the great ETs at Lebanon (Mineo had run in the 6.20s with the Coke Circuit that year - unheard-of numbers for him). But then, in '75, Prudhomme's Monza could not go below 6.40. He never ran a 6.0 there again, not with his Monzas, not with his Arrows (he did run in the 'twenties' with the Arrow, maybe the 'teens' once or twice). I asked Tommy Ivo about it, and he said that back in 1974, the track's starting line beams were positioned too high for FCs, and the cars were staging with their fenders, and the clocks weren't starting until after the entire car had left the line and cleared the beams. I don't know if or how this is true, but it's what Ivo told me. Many northeast Funny Car racers were unaware of this explanation, so I don't know why Ivo had the dirt, and the others didn't. - David Hapgood | Prudhomme set the NHRA National Record at E-town with a 6.26. - Danny White | Prudhomme started the year with a new sponsor. The Army sponsorship lasted through the '80 season. The '74 season started at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race on January 12. It was a sixteen-car field, and Don set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.37. He got to the final by running 6.49 in the first round, over John Lombardo, who broke, a 6.51 beat Danny Ongais in round two while a semifinal 6.52/193.96 advanced when Sush Matsubara broke. His final-round opponent was Gordie Bonin in Roland Leong's "Hawaiian." Prudhomme had problems and shut down to 8.19/111.24 in a runner-up finish to Bonin's 6.61/207. He debuted a new John Buttera built Vega at the AHRA Winternationals, which he ran for just two events. Even with the runner-up finish at Beeline, he parked the car after the NHRA Winternationals and went back to his trusty 'Cuda. He had it running at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #2 with a 6.45, but he failed to reach the finals. Don returned to winning ways at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he again qualified #2 with a 6.52/201.34. It was interesting that Prudhomme had been a long-time Goodyear supporter, but he showed up running M&H rubber there. He beat Al Hanna, Dale Emery, and Paul Smith to reach the final against Don Schumacher. In the final, the "Snake" set Low ET with a 6.38 at 225 to win over Schumacher's 6.74. At Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, Prudhomme qualified #4 and then slept on the line in the first round, where his 6.42/217.51 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.55/210. A week later (April 6), he was at OCIR for another AHRA Grand American race. A 6.51/225.66 in qualifying was good for both Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. It was a sixteen-car show, and Don beat Dave Condit in the first round, with a 6.51/220.58, but in round two, he got out of shape against Ed McCulloch and shut off. Another win came at the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at Irwindale. It was supposed to be a 32-car show, but only 30 cars ran. Prudhomme got stronger as the race progressed. He ran 6.67, 6.45, 6.40, and a 6.31 in the semifinals over Schumacher. In the final, he faced Dunn. Don ran a track record 6.28 at 228.42 (Top Speed) for the victory. He also won the AHRA Grand American Nationals at Green Valley Raceway on May 8. The race was supposed to run on May 5, but rain halted the show. The "Snake" qualified #1 with a 6.36. But in round two, he improved to 6.23 while beating Gene Snow. A 6.31 in the semifinals stopped Charlie Therwhanger and advanced Don to the final against Jim Nicoll. Jim ran a good 6.43, but it wasn't even close as Don ran another 6.23 at 234 to win. At the Seattle Northwest Open, Don was running strong again. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.43/191.08. In the first round, he was upset by McCulloch when Don crossed the centerline. Somehow he was reinstated for the semifinals, where the "Snake" beat Mike Miller with a 6.48/175. He faced McCulloch a second time for the final round. Ed had also been running strong with a track record 6.37. In the final, Ed got out of shape and shut off while Don got the win with a 6.55/192. He took home another AHRA trophy at Dragway 42 on May 19. He qualified #1 and then ran 6.39/214.28 in the semifinal over Richard Tharp driving for Schumacher. In the final, Snow fouled against him, and Don set a track record 6.32 for the win. He didn't qualify very well (#8) for the sixteen-car show at the AHRA Springnationals. The race was run at the brand-new Spokane track. This was its first event. But on race day, Don came through. He beat Mert Littlefield and Henry Harrison before dropping Danny Ongais' 6.41 in the semifinals with a 6.36 (Low ET). A final round 6.40/213.76 defeated Tom Hoover, who was now driving Don's former Vega. The next week (June 9) found Don at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.39/224.40. A 6.42/215.82 beat Therwhanger and in round two, a 6.45/193.54 beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen. Another 6.45/216.87 in the semifinals beat Kosty Ivanof, who also smoked the tires. This put Prudhomme in the final against Snow. Gene also ran 6.45 in the semifinals, so it looked to be a good race. But in the final, Don made his worst run of eliminations, a 6.68/215.31 that lost to Snow's 6.46/201. After that, Prudhomme went out and won the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. |

Notes: This car was run at the AHRA and NHRA Winternationals, at the AHRA race Don was Runner-up to Raymond Beadle and set Top Speed of the Meet at 230.76. Prudhomme thought the car was too heavy, Sold to Tom Hoover, who made it work and ran it for two and a half years. Notes: Sunday October 12/1975: The "Snake" makes history on a pit lane drag strip no less, at Ontario: 5.987 at 237.46 in the semis against Raymond Beadle at the Winston World Finals. Also went 241.53 for the sport's first 240 fuel FC. - Ricko. | Strange thing about the 241. It was not possible on the 3 decimal clocks of the day, which only displayed 241.28 and 241.93. It is likely that Prudhomme actually ran 241.93, but the clock was misread as 241.53. Inaugural member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. Won 6 of 8 NHRA National events in '75 - biggest loss was Indy to Beadle and the Blue Max. | Started the '75 season with the 'Cuda, but the Monza debuted at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Things didn't start so well for the Monza. First off, the tow rig broke down outside of Phoenix and had to be towed in. Then once it arrived, Don went to make the car's first pass ever and the rear end broke. After getting it fixed, he ran a 6.40 to qualify #3. He lasted until round two where the Monza got crossed up and lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega. With the bad luck behind him, Don towed into Pomona for the Winternationals where he ran a 6.25/228.42 to qualify #2. In the first round, he beat Meyer's tire smoking 8.15 with a 6.39/189.87. In round two, a 6.37 beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's potent Mustang. In the semifinals, a 6.28/212.76 beat Charlie Therwhanger in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He picked up his first win of the year with the Monza with a 6.24/226.70 in the final over Mike Miller who broke in Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega. On March 2, Prudhomme shocked everyone when he laid down a 6.08/235.60 to qualify first at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. The times were good for Low ET and Top Speed as well as new track records. But after qualifying, his times weren't so good. He singled in the first round, with an easy pass when Gary Burgin's Mustang II broke. In round two, a 6.51/212 beat Leroy Chadderton's quicker 6.48/222. A tire smoking 7.91 in the semifinals beat John Lombardo. And in the final, he ran a 7.17/141.28 to take the runner-up spot to Dale Pulde's 6.53/196 in the "Eastern Raider" Mustang II. At Gainesville for the Gatornationals, Don got the pole with a 6.39 (Low ET) at 205.47. Tommy Grove's Mustang lost to Prudhomme's 6.61 in the first round, and Tom Raley's Vega lost to the Monza's 6.53/198.23 in round two. A semifinal 6.87/167 advanced to the finals when Shirl Greer got out of shape. In the final, Don got his second NHRA national event win of the year with a 6.52/172.74 getting the win over Tom Prock whose "Custom Body" Dart broke a rear end. Portland held the Seattle Opener and Prudhomme made it into the final before losing to Ed McCulloch. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener on May 31 at Seattle, Don qualified #1, set Low ET, and won the race over McCulloch who broke in the final. Don went 3 for 3 at NHRA's third national event of the year, the Springnationals at National Trail. He ran Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 and then ran 6.31/200.44 over Jim Liberman's 6.59, a 6.40/219.51 over Jim Nicoll's 6.56, and a 6.84 over Greer in the semifinals when they both smoked the tires. In the final he ran Raymond Beadle behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." It was an interesting final when the "Max" had its Mustang II body come unhinged and blow off shortly after leaving the line. Don went on to score a 6.46 victory. Beadle got back at Prudhomme at the third Division 3 race at Cincinnati when he beat Don in the final with a 6.43/219 over the Monza's 7.19/147.29. He was runner-up at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 21 as well. He qualified #1 with a 6.53 and made his way into the final to run Harlan Thompson in the "Fireball Vega. Harlan ran a Low ET and Top Speed 6.36/222 to beat Prudhomme for the victory. He lost his first NHRA national event of the year at the Summernationals on July 13. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.22/205.01. But in the first round, he got crossed up and shut off to a 9.55/89.46 against Tom McEwen. Don wasn't down long as he picked up his fourth NHRA National event win of the season at the Grandnationals in Canada on August 16. Once again, he qualified #1 with a 6.46/207.37. He beat Burgin in the first round, with a 6.47/212.26 and in the semifinal, a 6.59/222.22 beat Bob Pickett. In the final he ran Prock again. Don set Low ET in the final with a 6.45/224.43 getting the win. He won the fourth Division 1 race at Maryland International, as a final round 6.79/225.00 (Top Speed) beat Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang II. Another win was added to his long list when he won the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan. He qualified #1 with a 6.28/233.76 then ran 6.12/213.27 to beat Greer's Mustang II in the first round. A semifinal 6.28/220.04 beat Denny Savage in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final he ran a 6.12/222.77 to beat Vic Cecelia's 6.35/225 in Charlie Proite's "Telstar." Prudhomme and Beadle staged their own little war at the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. They qualified #1 and second with Don's 6.17/232.55 (Top Speed) getting the #2 spot. In the first round, Don beat Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee" with a 6.16. In the second round, a 6.21 beat Pulde's 6.94 in the "Arizona Wildcat" and in the semifinals, a 6.45 beat Pickett's tire smoking 7.89 in Mickey Thompson's car. In the final, Prudhomme got beat. Raymond shot to a 6.16/226 for the win over the "Snake's" 6.26/224.44. After that, Don went to Portland International for the NHRA Division 6 final. He qualified #1 with a 6.44/196.50 and advanced past the first-round with a 6.69/175.78 when Miller broke in the "Green Elephant." A semifinal 6.20/193.96 beat Rich Rogers and in the final, he unleashed Low ET with a 6.12/211.76 getting the win over Gordie Bonin. |

Notes: World champion in 1976. Ran 5.978 at Indy to qualify number one. Also 6.026 at Winters and duplicated it at the Ontario Finals. Both the Winternationals 6.02 and Indy 5.97 were national records (the 5.987 at Ontario 75 was not backed up). Went 235.60 at Sanair 76 and 240.00 at Ontario 76. Did Don run 247.93 somewhere? Formerly listed that, but removed it until we get confirmation. Ran 6.24 Gainesville Dragway track record. Won 7 of 8 NHRA National events in '76; his only loss was to Burgin at Indy. Great article on HotRod.com with Snake describing his performance advantage over the rest of the Funny Car field in '75 and '76. |

Notes: Ran 6.03 at Pomona, 6.32 at Gainesville, 6.15 at Columbus, 6.09 at Englishtown, 6.06 at Indy, and 6.33 at Seattle. | Prudhomme got his new Arrow out of Jaime Sarte's shop just five days before the NHRA Winternationals. He did pretty well with it at Pomona. Don qualified #1 with a 6.14/240.64. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round with a 6.07/225.00. A second-round 6.14 at just 203.61 beat John Collins in Tom McEwen's second car. He got a single in the semifinals when Gary Burgin's car caught fire; Don ran 6.29/216.34. In the final, he ran Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Prudhomme wrapped up the weekend by winning the race with a Low ET and Top Speed run of 6.034/247.25. Despite a great year, these was Don's best NHRA numbers for 1977. The speed was a track record. In March, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Again, he qualified #1, this time with a 6.19/231.36. A first-round 6.38 beat Leon Cain, but in round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Eddie Pauling's 6.09 in Johnny Loper's Monza. The following week (March 13), Prudhomme qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.32. He easily got past the first round and then ran 6.34/228 to beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett in Mickey Thompson's Starfire in round two. In the semifinals, Don faced Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Monza. Don had him covered performance-wise, as Lindamood qualified #10 and had run 6.51 the round before, but for some reason, Don fouled, giving Roger a free ride into the final. On March 27, the "Snake" beat the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen in the final at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. Irwindale held a big Funny Car show on April 9, and Don was there. He lost before the final and again to Pauling, who was debuting a new Arrow for Johnny Loper. The story here was the times: Pauling won with a 5.97 over Don's 6.31. He made it into the final at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event but lost to Gary Burgin. In mid-June, the "Snake" was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.15. He beat Beadle, Gordie Bonin, and Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" to get into the final, where he faced Pickett. Bob outran Prudhomme's 6.26/236.84 with a 6.22/231, and Don had to settle for the runner-up spot. He got it all together at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with 6.09/238.09 times. He took out Tom Prock in the first round, and a 6.26/227 stopped Ed McCulloch in round two. In the semifinals, a 6.31/220 advanced over a shutting-off Tom Hoover, and in the finals, he was to run Billy Meyer. Meyer broke, and Prudhomme won with a 6.42/186.33 pass. Shortly after that (July 23), he stopped off at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.17/231.95 and won the race, beating Norm Wilcox driving Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega in the final with a 6.22/222.77. He made a stop at Atco for their Fuel Funny Car Championships. It was a race with all cars making two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Don's first race saw him turn a 6.26/228 (Top Speed) to beat Al Hanna's 6.72 in the "Eastern Raider," while in his second race, he beat R.C. Sherman in the "Black Magic" Vega with a Low ET of the meet 6.22. The other car that made the final was Bruce Larson, whose 6.51 was the second-best time. Based on times, you know the "Snake" was the favorite, but Larson got the jump and won, holding off Prudhomme for the title. Another runner-up effort came at the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7. It featured an eight-car field, and Don set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.17/236.22. The 6.17 tied his own track record. A 6.21/234 in the first round beat Bonin's 6.29/227, and in the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.17 solo pass when Burgin had a fuel pump break. In the final, he ran Hoover and his "Showtime" Monza. Tom won his first NHRA National event with a 6.24/226 over Prudhomme's troubled 6.76/172.08. A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships. Don singled in the first round, with a 6.11, but in the second round, his 6.22 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.18. He returned to the winner's circle at the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. He was the quickest in qualifying with a 6.06/241.93. In eliminations, he ran 6.14/234.37 in the first round to beat Meyer's 6.28/218. In round two, he ran his best of eliminations, a 6.10/228 to beat Tripp Shumake in John Powers' Camaro. Prock fouled against him in the semifinals, and Don ran 6.13/225 to move into the finals. The car facing him in the final was a bit of a surprise. It was Richard Rogers driving the "Green Elephant." Richard's best time had been a 6.21 in qualifying, so he was at a bit of a disadvantage. Sure enough, Don won the race with a final round 6.24/236.22 to beat Richard's 6.58/205. Another win came soon after when he won the Irwindale Back to School Race by beating Dave Hough's 6.09 in the final with a 6.05/230. He was in Seattle on September 25 for the NHRA Fallnationals, but rain postponed the event, and he did not return for the "rain date." Don had only qualified #7 with a 6.33, very unusual for him. He ran more "normal" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.05. He then made like a bracket racer, running three straight 6.06s to enter the final against Bonin. He faltered in the final, slowing to a 6.36 that lost to Gordie's 6.31. | Did Don run 5.95 somewhere this year? We originally listed 5.955, but the Pomona 6.034 is his quickest confirmed ET. Let us know if you have alternate info. |

Notes: Monster 5.973/245.23 statement in round one, of the US Nationals over Pat Foster's 6.13. Dominant performance throughout, but Don dropped three tenths in the final, and Tom McEwen earned an emotional victory. Also 241.28 at 78 Summers and 240.64 at Springs. Third qualifier at Winters at 6.177/240.67. Won at Fremont over Ivo on 3/08/78 to repeat their Winters final, 6.15/234.37 to 6.25/230.17. Prudhomme had a new Arrow built for the '78 season. It was built by Pat Foster and Jim Hume of H&H Racecraft. The biggest difference between the Arrow and the '77 car was the new torsion bar front suspension. The old version used a solid front end. Foster stated, "Other than that, the car will just be a little lower and a little slipperier than last year's car." Don started his season on the right track by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He "only" qualified #5 with a 6.83 (traction was bad!). A pick-up of two-tenths in the first round, saw his 6.63/227 beat Bryan Raines' 7.34. His 6.65/228.42 (Top Speed) beat low qualifier Tripp Shumake in the second round. Don's 6.60 in the semifinals sent John Collins home, and a final round 6.61/227.27 beat Gene Snow for the title. As if that wasn't enough of a good way to start the year, he did it again at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 6.17/240.67 (Top Speed) qualified #3. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.30/236.22 beat Ed McCulloch. Snow had problems in the second round against him and the "Snake" advanced with a 6.56/205. He faced his buddy, Tom McEwen, and the "Mongoose" smoked his tires in the semifinals while Don ran 6.41/229. Prudhomme raced another old friend in the final," TV Tommy" Ivo. Unfortunately for Ivo, his car broke in the final, and Don soloed for the win with a 6.36/234.98. He looked well on his way to win a third major race at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Championships. Only one driver had out-qualified Prudhomme at the first two events, and he did it again at Beeline. Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow, qualified #1 at every race, and he did so again; his 6.23/232 got the pole while Don's 6.24/239.36 (Top Speed) followed close behind. These two would work their way into the final. Don ran 6.48, 6.56, and 6.86. Tripp had the edge, and both overpowered the track in the final, but Shumake recovered first with his 6.75/218, picking up the victory over Prudhomme's shut-off 8.91/114.00. Gainesville was the next stop on the calendar, and this time Don qualified #1 with a 6.23 (Low ET) at 238.09. A 6.52/221.13 beat Tom Anderson's 6.81/202 in the first round, followed by a 6.42/232.55 that topped Gary Burgin's 6.71/201. But a funny thing happened in the semifinal, the "Snake" got beat! Eventual winner Dale Pulde ran 6.37/236 to put Don's 6.54/212.76 on the trailer. Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.00/239.36 in qualifying #1 for the Bakersfield March Meet. In round one, he ran 6.13/234.98 to stop Jake Johnston's 6.66, but in the second round, a quick-leaving McCulloch stole a 6.09/231 to 6.07/234.37 win from the "Snake." Don skipped racing the NHRA Division 7 race held at Fremont on April 2 to go to Long Beach and race at a celebrity road race. He finished third in the 20-mile race behind Gordon Johncock and Dan Gurney. He then went to Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener. His 6.30/228.4 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.19 in the first two rounds of eliminations before really getting on it and running Low ET and Top Speed in the final at 6.11/238.09 to beat McEwen's 6.18/217 for the victory. The following week (May 13), he won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR. He qualified #1 with a 6.08/240.64. An opening round 6.04/240.64 beat Shumake's 6.38/231. Don set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.00/242.58 that took out Dave Hough's 6.35/230 in the "Super Shops" car. A final round 6.04/242.58 (Top Speed) beat Henry Harrison's 6.37/229 for the title. | At the Seattle National Open, Prudhomme ran an experimental, after dark 6.56. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1979. Don was trying to get his fifth straight NHRA Funny Car Championship in '79. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #4 with a 6.13. But in the first round, he fell off to 6.32 at 201 and lost to Billy Meyer's 6.18/241. At Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener, he qualified #1 but lost early to Pat Foster. The season was not starting so well for the "Snake." Things went better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals in March. A track record 6.15 at 243.90 qualified #1, and he beat Bob Pickett in the opening round. In round two, his 6.31/236 beat Meyer's 6.37/236. Unfortunately, he went up in smoke in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. Surprisingly, Don did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the Springnationals. He qualified poorly (#13) with a 6.29/236.22, but he picked up to 6.21/228.42 in the first round, to beat Meyer's 6.68/170. In round two, Prudhomme's 6.31/222.22 lost to Al Segrini's 6.20/226. He did not run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.09/240.64. But in round one, he was late off the line, and his 6.26 lost to Ron Colson's 6.28 in the "Hawaiian." He made a trip to Martin, Michigan, for the NHRA Division 3 race. Don qualified #2 with a 6.08, just behind Gary Burgin's 6.07. These two would meet in the final. Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed during eliminations with a 6.02/240.00. In the final, a 6.16/236.84 gave him the victory over Burgin's 6.30/215. He showed up at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in early July. He had the only Funny Car there, and he singled for the win. He also stopped off at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Don qualified #1 at 6.26 and then ran 6.24/231.95 and 6.23/234.37 to reach the final. His final-round opponent was Dale Pulde driving the "War Eagle," who had run Low ET at 6.12 during eliminations. Don smoked the tires and slowed to a 6.85/178.21 runner-up finish to Pulde's 6.28/236. He then went to US 131 and won their Funny Car Nationals. Prudhomme had run as well as 6.10/237.46 before stopping Frank Oglesby in the final. Another win came at the PHR Championships. In the final, his 6.24/228 beat Pete Williams driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." The wins kept stacking up as he then won the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.21/234.98 qualified #3. The first-round saw him pick up to 6.12 over Roy Harris' 6.35. A semifinal 6.19 took out Burgin's 6.40. The final was against Pulde, and this time the "Snake" reversed the outcome of the PHR meet by winning with a 6.63 over Pulde's 6.69 in a tire-smoking battle. He didn't run so well at Byron, where he lost to Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car in the first round. But he really showed them up in Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Don reset the NHRA ET record to 5.95 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 245.23. A first-round 6.18/215 beat Pulde, but the car went into a wheelstand in round two, and Prudhomme had to shut off against Colson. Shortly after that, he was at Jackson County Sports Park for the NHRA Division 6 Final. He made it into the final only to lose to Raymond Beadle's 6.16/237 in the "Blue Max" with a 6.36/195.50. Going into Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Beadle held a 324 point lead over Prudhomme for the championship. Don had to act fast. He qualified #2 at Seattle with a 6.08/243.24. A first-round 6.13/226.70 advanced over a tire-smoking Kosty Ivanof. Meyer also smoked the tires against him in round two, and Don's 6.32/215.82 moved into the semifinals. There he was upset by Jim Dunn. Jim had been running really well, and in the semis, his 6.17/223 beat Prudhomme who dropped a couple of cylinders at 6.26/223.88. Don had to watch as Beadle went on to win the race. He got some payback at the Winston Challenge race held at Fremont on September.30. Both he and Beadle made up the Funny Car final. It was close as the "Snake" had run 5.99/242.58 in his semifinal race while the "Max" had run 5.98. It was close, but Don's starting line advantage got him the win with his 6.07/236.22 narrowly beating Beadle's 6.06 at the same speed. That was the last highlight of the year as at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Don was off-pace. He only qualified #11 with a 6.43/227.84, and in the first round, his 6.85/229.59 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.53/229. Still, most was happy with a season like this, and he maintained his hold on the second spot in the NHRA points. | At NHRA Seattle, Snake and his Arrow appeared at the JC Penny Firestone behind the mall. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Prudhomme started the year with his venerable Arrow but debuted this Plymouth Horizon in April at OCIR for the 64-car show. In the opening round, Don ran a track record 5.96 at 238 to beat John Force. He made it into the final against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." The "Snake" got crossed up and shut off while Colson ran 6.48 for the win. On April 20, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.94/238.72, but rain interrupted the race, and Don could not run on the rain date since he chose to go to Baton Rouge instead for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He would've been better off at Fremont since his best of 6.21/235.60 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge. On May 17, he was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.03/238.09. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.18. He then went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. Prudhomme ran well, hitting a 6.04 in the semifinals over Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the final, he set Low ET with a 5.97 at 235.60 over Colson's 6.70/229. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.21/231.95 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Colson. Don improved to 6.08/222.77 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round two, advancing Billy Meyer into the semifinals. He did not compete at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, choosing to run the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas instead. Don qualified #1 with a questionable 5.92. He then ran 6.19 and 6.28 over Kenny Bernstein and Tom McEwen to reach the final, where he faced John Collins. A final 6.18/229 gave him the victory over an up-in-smoke Collins at 7.24. He was back on the NHRA tour for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown in July. Don qualified #3 with a 6.02/237.46. An opening round 5.99/240.64 beat Bernstein, and he made an easy single in the second round when Dale Pulde was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Prudhomme faced Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max" in the semifinals, and Don's 6.05 beat the "Max's" ailing 6.85. Once again, he found himself in the final. There he faced and beat Meyer's 6.58/192 with a 6.10/238.05. Prudhomme was back at Union Grove in July for the NHRA Division 3 race. While he didn't reach the final, he did set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.15. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42. This time, the "Snake" really had to work for it. He qualified #2 with a 6.20 behind Pulde's 6.12 in the "War Eagle." A first-round 6.23 beat Gary Burgin's 6.44, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Len Imbrogno could not show. The final came down to Pulde and Prudhomme. Don got the win with a 6.26, stopping Pulde's out-of-shape run. August started with Prudhomme winning the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. The "Snake" did not have the quickest car (Tom Hoover did at 6.05), but he was the most consistent, running 6.15 and 6.14 (at 232.55) to reach the final. There, he faced Billy Graham, and a 6.13/231.93 gave him yet another win over Graham's 6.25/219. He did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was runner-up to McEwen at the Funny Car Nationals at US 131. There, his final round, 6.31/206.89 lost to the "Mongoose's" 6.17/233. On August 18, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Don was the only 5-second qualifier with a 5.95 (Low ET). In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover's 6.52 in the "Pacemaker" Firebird. Don was reinstated when officials found out that Hoover was driving two cars. It didn't do Prudhomme much good as he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bill Spevacek. He had problems with his race car transporter on the way to Indianapolis and had to be towed in. He was still able to run a 6.07/234.37 to qualify #10. In round one, he beat Colson with a 6.12/234.98, but a second-round 6.27/226.75 lost to Meyer's 6.18/234. Ran 6.07/236.22 NHRA Indianapolis 9/80. |

Notes: Don started the '80 season by winning the OCIR Super Bowl race. He beat Kenny Bernstein in the final. At the AHRA Winternationals, he again reached the final, but this time, he finished runner-up as Tom Hoover beat him. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.10/240.64 qualified #5. Prudhomme suffered a rare first-round loss to Gordie Bonin. On March 9, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Prudhomme set Low ET in qualifying #1, and he ran another 6.04 at 233.16 in the semifinals while beating Dale Pulde. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, and the "Snake" boiled the hides while Jim took the victory with a 6.35/231. Everything went Don's way at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #1 at 5.98/238, then ran 6.12/235.60 over Roy Harris, a 5.94/234.98 over Al Segrini, and a semifinal 5.93/239.36 single when Pulde developed an oil leak and shut off on the line. Don's 5.93 set a new NHRA record. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." It was the "Snake's day as his 5.98/238.09 beat Beadle's 6.17/231. His new Horizon debuted soon after this in April at OCIR. |

Notes: Don started the year at the AHRA Winternationals where he debuted his new Horizon. He was also debuted his new sponsor, Pepsi, which replaced the Army that had backed him since '74. It was an eight-car show and Prudhomme qualified #4 on the tricky track surface with a 6.89/213. He faced Tom Hovland in the first round, and they both smoked their tires, but the "Snake" got the win with a 7.32 over Hovland's 8.54. In the semifinals, Prudhomme again lit up the tires and lost to the eventual winner of the event, Kenny Bernstein. Don qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.06/239.99, but lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" who ran 5.93/245 in the semifinals when he had tire shake and had to shut down. After the first two races of the year, Don had the engine moved back about two inches in the chassis to combat his early season traction problems. He went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and in qualifying #1 set NHRA records of 5.926/247.25. Don dumped Billy Meyer in the first round, with a 5.97/245.23, but in round two against Bernstein, he got crossed up and crossed the centerline. He then went to State Capitol for a best of three match race against Tom Hoover on March 22. He won the match hitting a best of 6.25/211.76 while Tom's best was 6.45/201. On April 26 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car show. Don qualified #5 with a 6.11. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Beadle and won with another 6.11 when Beadle lost a motor. Unfortunately, the "Snake" broke in the semifinals advancing Bernstein into the final. Early in May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 and made it into the semifinals before losing to Hoover. A week later (May 9), Prudhomme won the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.02/241.93 in the eight-car show. In round one, a 6.19/238.09 beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Dunn's 6.32/214 with a 6.17/238.72. In the final he ran Craig Epperly in Don Tate's "Superstar." Craig overpowered the track and smoked the tires and Don got the victory with a 6.56/227.84. Back on the AHRA trail, he was at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals on June 7. He qualified #2 with a 6.37/231, second to Hoover. A first-round 6.34/233 beat Glenn Mikre's 6.76/231 in Bill Schifsky's Citation. In the semifinals, a 6.26/238.10 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat John Collins' 6.36. In the final, he lost to Hovland's Corvette. At the NHRA Springnationals, Don qualified #2 with a 6.09/239.99 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, he lost to Collins in the first round, with an off-pace 6.56/175.78. At the end of June, he won the AHRA Nationals at San Antonio, Texas. A 5.97/242.58 qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Prudhomme stopped Epperly in round one, with a 6.07/242.58. Dale Pulde shut off in round two and Don's 6.11/225.56 advanced. In the semifinals, his 6.19/230.76 beat Bernstein's 6.24/233. In the final he met a strong running Dale Armstrong. Dale lost a motor and the "Snake" won with a 6.07/241.28. Prudhomme made it two in a row on the NHRA trail when he also won the Grandnationals in Canada on August 9. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 6.15/238.09. This meant that he had to face low qualifier Meyer in the first round. Don was up to the task as he thumped a tire-smoking Meyer with a 6.24/236.22. In the semifinals, Armstrong also smoked the tires against him and his 6.33/227.27 advanced into the final. There, both he and Bernstein had traction problems, but Don recovered first and his 7.18 took the victory. He didn't do so well at the AHRA Western Nationals although he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.12. In the first round, he ran a sub-par 6.43/214.71 that lost to Jim Dunn's 6.25/224. A week later (August 23), AHRA held its World Finals at Spokane and Prudhomme won. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.97 that beat Gary Densham. In the semifinals, he blew an engine on a 6.51/215.82 solo when opponent Mardy Maltais was unable to show. With a new engine installed for the finals, Don once again dipped into the fives with a 5.98/239.36 that beat Gordie Bonin's 6.09/236 for the title. He had more engine trouble at the US Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #2, behind Beadle. He made it into the second round before he lost his engine and the race to Fuzz Miller. Surprisingly, Prudhomme failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. His best of 6.17/234.37 was good for the third alternate. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #2 with a 6.00/238.72 at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals. |

Notes: AMAZING 5.63/244.56 shut-off run at Indy this year, plus 5.73/252.80 NHRA best speed. First Funny Car to run 250.00 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on 5/29/1982 (initial entry into the Crane Cams 250 mph Club for Funny Cars). Also, 247.25 at 82 Southerns. Credited with 255 mph run at AHRA Gary, which was probably more like 245. | Don made one of the most incredible runs in Funny Car history at Indy. This came in a year when he switched from Mopar bodied cars to a GM for the first time since '76. He had won twice in '81 and switched to a Firebird for the '82 season. He started the season at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. A track record 6.34 qualified #1, and he made his way to the final by running 6.43 over Johnny West and 6.34 to beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. Prudhomme was upset in the final by Ed Moore, who had earlier reset both ends of the track record with 6.21/232.54 times. He ran 6.03/242.58 for the #4 spot at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. An off pace 6.31/185.95 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.11/243 in the first round. Things were even worse at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's best of 6.19/231.60 failed to qualify. The NHRA Southern Nationals was held in Atlanta in April, and it featured an eight-car Funny Car field. It was a tough show to qualify in, but Don's 6.13/244.56 got in on the "bump" spot. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Frank Hawley's 6.09/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week (May 2), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Don won the race there, beating Tom Hoover and John Force to reach the finals. In the final, he beat upstart Tom Hovland's 6.46/222 with a 6.31/238.72. On May 29, Don ran 6.00/250.00 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. The first 250 mph run by a Funny Car made him the fifteenth NHRA driver to top 250 and the first to do it in a Funny Car. The time qualified him first in the eight-car show. The race was run on May 30, and Don ran well but ended up as the runner-up. He beat John Pott in Larry Coogle's car in the first round, with a 6.10/242. In the semifinals, another 6.10 at 246 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. But in the final, he came up against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." The two left together, but Beadle's 6.08/239 beat the "Snake's" 6.13/247.25 for the win. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Don set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.13, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.34 that lost to Hovland's 6.33. He qualified #1 again the following week at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.92 (Low ET) at a track record speed of 248.61 got him the pole. He fell off to a 6.20/241.93 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat Tim Grose's 6.31/216. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in round two. It was around this time that a few cars started running nitrous. Meyer was one of them, and he had run over 254 at Norwalk. Bob Brandt took a look in that direction. AHRA held its Summernationals at Kansas City, and once again, Don got the pole with a track record 5.97 at 244.56. A 6.03/229.00 beat Jim White in round one, while a semifinal 6.10/196.50 advanced to the final when Ron Correnti failed to fire. In the final, he met old foe, Burgin. Don had problems and shut down to 7.10/130.81 while Gary motored to the victory at 5.99/234. The next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Snake" qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.03/245.90 (Top Speed). This is where he got his first NHRA victory in the Firebird. Prudhomme advanced past round one when Beadle broke a rear-end while a semifinal 5.91 (Low ET) at 244.56 beat Hawley who smoked the tires. The final turned out to be a rematch right down to the winner as the '81 event. It was Bernstein against Prudhomme, and Don prevailed with a 6.03/245.23 over Kenny's 6.13/233. And just as he had done in '81, he went out and won the NHRA Summernationals as well. Meyer was the performance leader, but Don wasn't running too badly, qualifying #6 with a 5.96/248.61. He beat Murf McKinney, Beadle, and Bernstein to reach the finals, where he faced Mike Dunn. The "Snake" was not to be denied his 34th NHRA career victory, running 6.00/241.28 over Mike's 6.15/237 in the "Hawaiian." On June 27, he was at Brainerd for the US Funny Car Championships. He was upset in the first round, by Steve Gladieux. | 5.89 251.96 beating Tom McEwen, 5.944 226.30 in the semis, 5.901 255.45 AHRA US 30 1982 to win over Gary Burgin's 6.061 in the finals. Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White |

Notes: Don had a terrible start for the '83 season at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. Eight cars competed, all running two rounds, and the two cars with the lowest ET's would meet in the final. In the "Snake's" first race, he blew his engine, and the car caught fire. Still, his 9.12 beat Gary Burgin, who shut down early. The team installed another "bullet" for his second race, and once again, it blew up and caught fire. He still won as opponent Tom McEwen had shut down. Don crossed the stripe at 7.34/125.69. Things went better at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where his 6.80 (Low ET) qualified #1. Traction there was terrible as his 6.80 in qualifying held for Low ET of the meet. He went on to win by beating Tom Hoover in the first round with a 7.32/229 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, he beat Tom McEwen. That put him into the final against Gary Burgin. Gary had problems and shut off while Prudhomme took the win with a 7.00. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.097/227.84. A first-round 6.33/207.37 took out Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang, but in the second round, the "Snake" had to shut off against Frank Hawley due to severe tire shake. Don qualified #6 with a 5.92/233.16 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but an off-pace 6.19/209.78 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.04/239 in the first round. Early in April, he went back to OCIR for its first 64-car show. Once again, the race featured two rounds and the two Low ET cars meeting for the final. In the first race, his 6.13/222.77 defeated Burgin's 6.35/230. He raced McEwen in his second race, and the "Mongoose" smoked the tires while Prudhomme took the win with a 6.28/207.37. His best time of 6.13 was nowhere close to advancing into the final. The following week (April 9), OCIR did it again. They held another 64-car show run in the same format. It was not a good day for Don as in the first round, his motor-blowing 6.60/183 lost to John Force's 6.20/225. In his next race, the "Snake" shut off against Billy Meyer. He did not go to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. On May 2, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.29 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He stayed tough during eliminations, running 6.36/235.60 over John Collins's 6.63/198 and 6.26/236.84 over Jim White's 6.77/225, but McEwen ran better laps of 6.22 and 6.22 to reach the final. In the final, the "Mongoose's" 6.20/238 got the better of the "Snake's" 6.51/194. Near the end of the month, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car show, and his 5.97/243.24 qualified #3. A troubled 6.94/197.36 beat an even more troubled Ken Veney at 7.11/227 in the first round. The car smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Don shut down, losing to Mark Oswald's 6.02/249 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Shortly after that (June 5), he made an appearance at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He "only" qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but once eliminations started, the car came to life. An opening round 5.87/226.69 took out Meyer, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 5.81/246.57 that defeated Dale Pulde's 5.89/247. He faced Oswald in the final, and despite running a better 5.86/245, he lost to Mark's 6.00/236. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," led qualifying with a 5.88/238, but Prudhomme was right behind in the #2 spot with a 5.94/243.30. Unfortunately, Don lost to Rick Johnson driving the "Custom Body" car in the opening round. He continued to run well at the AHRA events. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.05/244.57. He stayed in the 6.0s by beating Ron Correnti in the opening round with a 6.09/238.10 and Mike Dunn in the semifinal with a 6.08/238.10. Once again, he faced McEwen in the final. This time it was no contest as Don's 6.13/243.91 won easily over McEwen's 6.68/155. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 5.916/252.80 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Anderson and Hawley to reach the final against Oswald. Mark was great on the lights, and in the final, it showed as his 6.34/245 nipped Don's 6.31/241.93 for the victory. The "Candies and Hughes" team continued to be a thorn in Prudhomme's side at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Mark's 5.90/251 got the pole with the "Snake's" 5.91/238.72 following. These two looked like they were headed for another final-round showdown. In round one, John Lombardo fell to Prudhomme's 5.96/233.16. The "Blue Max" ruptured an oil pan in the second round, so Don made a solo. The semifinal saw Oswald also make a solo as his competition broke. So, all Don had to do was beat Force. But fate stepped in as the car went into heavy tire shake, and Don shut down while Force legged it to a 6.01/247 for the win. Prudhomme bypassed the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver, choosing to go to Kansas City instead for the AHRA Summernationals. His 6.14/234.37 there qualified second behind Mike Dunn's 6.09/246 in the "Hawaiian." In round one, an easy 6.40/229 beat Johnny West, who lost a blower belt. He really picked it up in the semifinal, where his 6.05/218.97 won over West, who broke on the line. In another classic "Snake vs. Mongoose" final, Don's 6.07/239 got the victory over Tom's close 6.10/222. He always ran well at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships as he seemed to win it every other year. But this year, his 6.07/219.51 only qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field. He got an easy solo in round one when Bob Pickett broke, and in round two, Al Segrini was shut off on the line with an oil leak, so he advanced with a 6.10/233.76 solo. In the semifinal, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires, shutting off to 10.57 in a loss to eventual winner Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," who won with a 6.05/238. Don's best NHRA national event times were the 5.749 from the OCIR Finals and the 252.80 from Sanair. Don sold the car to Dennis Lockaby to Monty Todd. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Ran 5.94/240 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. | Prudhomme had an interesting season. He was one of only six drivers to run in the 5.60s. In six IHRA starts, he made the final round in four of them, but in NHRA competition, he was winless for the second straight year. In fact, he failed to make an NHRA final. The last time that happened was in '72. Don started the season in the best way, by winning. He won the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #1 with a 6.23 on the tricky surface. He advanced past the first-round when opponent Bill McCahill crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 6.46/218 beat Bryan Raines in the "Impulse" Mustang. A final round 6.66/208 took the victory over Henry Harrison who had earlier set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.15/232. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 5.95/217.91 beat Ed McCulloch's quicker 5.90/243, but he shut off with problems in the second round, letting John Force single. At the Gatornationals, 24 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Don ran 5.94/240.64 to qualify #13. Once again, he had problems and shut off, this time in the first round, advancing John Collins. Things went much better the following week (March 25) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. The track record going into this race was a 6.02 by Raymond Beadle. Prudhomme broke both ends of the track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.79/254.23. He got past the first-round easily and then beat Force's 6.00/241 in the second round with a 5.93/241. In the semifinals, both Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and Don ran 5.96, but the "Snake" got the win. In the final, he met up with his old friend, Tom McEwen. Don had problems and limped across with a 15.58/58.17 while McEwen ran 5.91/248 for the victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Don qualified #10 with a 5.92, but he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Also in May, he ran at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. An eight-car Funny Car show was run and 10 cars attempted to qualify. Don ran 5.81 to qualify #2. A first-round 5.72 at a career-best speed of 257.14 beat Gary Thompson, but he hurt his motor and was out of the competition. We needless to say, that pass was good for Low ET and Top Speed. Don failed to qualify for the eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #1 at Bristol on June 3 for the IHRA Springnationals. A 5.74 (Low ET) got the spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Meyer in the first round. On June 10, he qualified #5 with a 5.85/252.80 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 5.87/246.57 beat Paul Smith, while a second round 5.99/212.36 advanced when Force broke. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.24/69 that lost to McEwen's 5.87/251. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, he qualified #5 with a 6.01, but lost to Jim Head's 6.06 in round two with a 6.13. |

Notes: Also Ran NHRA's fastest speed at 264.86 at the World Finals. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Prudhomme started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He ran 5.98 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. John Force banged a blower in the first round, and Don advanced with a 5.99/238.09. In the semifinal, he ran 6.04/229, but he had gotten out of shape and crossed the centerline. His opponent, John Collins, advanced to the final with a tire-smoking 9.13. The following weekend, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Nothing went right there for the "Snake," as the best run he could make was a 7.92/111.96. Obviously, that failed to qualify. After that bad showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 5.80/252.10 qualified #11. He improved to 5.78/251 in the opening round to beat Force. In round two, the car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut off against Collins, who advanced with a 5.74. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 6 for the Coor's Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, tire shake did him in again, where he clicked it off to 9.45 in a first-round loss to Johnny West's 6.59. Shortly after that, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.90/253.52. He continued to look strong in round one, where his 5.88/252.95 beat Jim Head's 6.07/246. In the second round, his opponent, Ron Correnti, sheared a fuel pump and the "Snake" advanced with a 5.94/249.58. But that was it, as an off-pace 6.12/204.73 lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 5.75/254 in the semifinal. It was no secret that Prudhomme was not running up to par, nowhere was it more evident than at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He blew an engine during qualifying. He blew up another one in the first round, while beating Al Segrini. Yet another engine was lost on a 5.83/237 in round two that beat Mark Oswald's 5.85/257 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was supposed to run Dale Pulde in the semifinal, but he gave up and packed up for the home as he was out of parts. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. Also 5.335 at Seattle 1988. Won 1988 Englishtown Summernationals. | Don started his '88 season by competing at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. An eight-car Funny Car show was run and the "Snake" qualified #4 with a 5.62. He beat Chris Lane in the first round, with a 5.69/257.14, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.38/104 loss to Ed McCulloch's 5.73/255. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.60. Kenny Bernstein beat him in the first round. Things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where a 5.48/262 qualified #6. He beat Darrell Amberson in the first round, and in round two, a 5.42/264 got past Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals against Mark Oswald, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. Prudhomme didn't run any of the IHRA races this year, so the next big event he was at was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where in the second round, his 5.78 lost to Bernstein's 5.73. In mid-May, Don was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He was a bit off as he only qualified #15 with a 5.80 and he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Bernstein seemed to have Prudhomme's number as at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Kenny stopped Don in the second round. It wasn't Bernstein that kept him from victory at the NHRA Springnationals; it was tire smoke. After qualifying #6 with a 5.56, he smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Mike Dunn in Joe Pisano's car. Things had to get better for the "Snake" and they did in a big way at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.54/261.70. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.50 and another 5.50/262 beat Bruce Larson in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.55/267 beat Johnny West's 5.68 in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he was up against Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Don prevailed, running a 5.44/260 for the win. So after that, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, and wins that as well. There he qualified #2 with a 5.47/257.36. A first-round 5.47/255 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" while in round two, a 5.54/254 beat Oswald. In the semifinals, he dropped back into the 5.4's with a 5.49/257 over Dale Pulde. In the final, he met with long time Funny Car racer Bruce Larson. Bruce had been running 5.5's and in the final he slipped to a 5.63/260 that finished runner-up to Don's track record 5.41 at 257. On August 7, he was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. The track was great with no less than six cars qualifying with 5.3 times. Leading them all was Prudhomme's 5.30/268.33. Don backed up the ET for a new NHRA record. Unfortunately, after beating John Martin in the first round, the "Snake" smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Tharp. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 5.193 National Record at 3/89 Houston Supernationals and 5.172 National Record at Indy 89. | Don's last season driving an FC. He started the year by qualifying #12 with a 5.47/261.39 at the Winternationals at Pomona. In the first round, a 5.50/263.92 lost to Bruce Larson's 5.32/259. At Houston for the Supernationals, he ran a 5.19 (Low ET) at 265.80 to qualify first. He lasted until round two when he smoked the tires and lost to Larson again. He qualified badly at the Gatornationals where a 5.52/261.09 was #15 on the list. He lost to Art Hendy in the first round. At the fourth NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Don qualified #7 with a 5.50. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, and a 5.53/252.31 beat R.C. Sherman in round two. But another 5.53/250.62 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.48/263 in the semifinals. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals and another semifinal finish. He qualified #6 with a 5.38/266.74 and beat Sherman in round one, and in round two, a 5.37/268 beat Art Hendey. In the semifinal, he should have won as his 5.39 was better than his opponent Mark Oswald's 5.41. But Oswald got him on the tree. He qualified #1 at the Cajun Nationals with a 5.38/264.55 and ran a first-round solo when Sherman broke. He got one back from Larson in round two when his 5.44/261 beat Larson's 5.50. In the semifinals, both he and Dunn smoked the tires, but Mike got the win. He qualified #1 again at National Trail with a 5.27/272.72 for the Springnationals. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track in the first round, and smoked the tires to a loss against Tom Hoover. The next event was the Grandnationals in Canada. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.57/257.51. In round one, a 5.72/256.99 beat Gary Densham's 5.79/242. He got another one over Larson in round two when Bruce broke. In the semifinals, a strong running Kenny Bernstein beat him with a 5.48/254 to Don's 5.73/231. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the ninth race of the season, the Summernationals. Prudhomme set a track record 5.27 in qualifying #1. He was running well, making it into the semifinals against Bernstein before breaking just off the line in their semifinal race. At Denver, for the Mile High Nationals, Don helped save Don Gay Jr. in qualifying. Gay had hit the wall during a qualifying run and was knocked unconscious. The car continued down the track with the now bent in headers lighting the body on fire. It finally rolled to a stop, but one of the pressurized fire bottles exploded, blowing the body into pieces. Gay was still unconscious. Prudhomme had been in the other lane on the run and he came to Gay's aid since he still had his fire suit on. He pulled Gay out of the car. In the actual race, the "Snake" qualified #12 with a 5.89/249.16, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Things went better at the next event, the California Nationals, where Don took his first win of the year. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.30/276.49. In the first round, another 5.30/268.65 beat Kalitta. In round two a 5.38/268.73 beat Jim White and in the semifinals he beat John Force with a 5.35/268.09. He stayed consistent in the final with a 5.32/272.64 taking the title over Oswald's 5.36/274. Seattle International was the next stop for the Seafair Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.33/271.98, but set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.29/271 over Tom Hoover. A second round 5.38/268.33 beat Force, but a semifinal 5.40/263.77 lost to Bernstein's 5.34/276. |

Notes: Prudhomme started the '92 season at Firebird Raceway's test & tune event in January. On Friday, he and crew chief John Medlen brought their new Swindahl car and started the weekend with an out-of-shape, half-track pass. The run would have been a good one before Don clicked it was he stopped the 330-foot timers with a .22. They made more runs on Saturday. A half-track 5.50/182.29 was followed by two tire smokers. Then Prudhomme laid down a 4.99 at a track record speed of 291.07. Pomona did not go very well for the team as a best of 5.12/277.17 left them (third alternate) outside of the starting field for the NHRA Winternationals. Prudhomme did much better back at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals in February A 5.15/287.81 qualified #14, and in the opening round, he improved to 4.94/289.01 to beat Mike Dunn's 5.10/265. But in round two, the "Snake" overpowered the track and smoked the tires in a loss to Mike Brotherton. The next NHRA race was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Don's 4.95/291.26 qualified #9, and in round one, he ran an even better 4.93/289.76, but it wasn't enough to beat Kenny Bernstein's 4.85/293. |

Notes: In January, Prudhomme started the season at Firebird Raceway for its test and tune event. After making two early shut-off runs on Friday and a tire-shaking run on Saturday, he had to leave early. The vibration was so bad that it damaged the chassis, and the team had to take it to Al Swindahl's shop so that he could weld on a new rear clip. Everything was good for the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, where Don qualified #11 with a 4.95/280.11. Unfortunately, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round. He was back at Firebird Raceway in February for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. A 4.96/289.57 qualified #12, and although he improved to 4.93/276.32 in the first round, he lost to Doug Herbert's 4.83/299. He became just the third driver to top 300 mph when he did it in the first week of March at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. His 4.86/301.60 qualified #5. In the first round, Joe Amato's 4.91/289 dropped his 4.90/295.08. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #11 at 4.91/295.37. But that first round continued to be a problem for the "Snake" as his 4.91/293.54 fell to Tommy Johnson Jr's 4.90/296. He was the second qualifier at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, where his 4.92/285.71 followed Amato's 4.91/292. But again, Johnson Jr. stopped him in the first round in a 4.97/288 to 5.06/264.39 battle. He barely made the show at Atlanta, where a 5.02/284.45 qualified #15 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This time, eventual winner Eddie Hill beat him in round one. Things worsened at Memphis, where his 5.19/279.58 best failed to qualify for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He also could not qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, where he was the third alternate at 5.07/283.73. Things turned in the right direction at Columbus, where not only did he qualify (#10 at 5.03/282.22), he got his first-round win of the year when his 5.04/282.66 beat Andy Woods' 5.02/288. His happiness was short-lived as Hill's 4.98/289 put his 5.06/283.64 on the trailer in round two. Topeka was NHRA's next stop on the calendar for the Western Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #12 at 5.07/263.15. He was down on power here, as his speed was the slowest of all qualifiers. He got a little luck in round one, where his 5.20/260.79 beat Shelly Anderson's late 5.15/269, but in round two, his 5.24/247.32 was way off of Amato's winning 5.07/287 pace. The NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver was nothing to write home about. He qualified #15 with a 5.39/245.90 and lost to Hill in round one. Sonoma was another bad race for the "Snake" as he was the fourth alternate for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.19/267.77. At Seattle, he qualified on the "bump" at 5.06/278.81 for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, and he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Cory McClenathan. Clearly, this was not a good season for Prudhomme, and he needed to get the car headed back in the right direction fast. It didn't happen at Brainerd, where he qualified #13 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.09/281.16. In the first round, his 5.08/269.70 got around Herbert's 5.18/288, but he slipped to a 5.19/265.40 in round two and lost to Rance McDaniel's 5.10/263. Don was the third member of the Slick 50 300 mph Club on 3/06/93 with a 301.60 at Houston. That was Don's best speed of the year, combined with his best ET at 4.860. He also ran a nice 4.931 bump spot ET at 1993 Topeka Fall. |
