They bought a new Woody Gilmore car (originally built for Guy Allen, father of Jeb and Les) and a blown fuel Donovan powerplant from Ed Pink. Notes: Pryor had one of 35 Top Fuel cars that showed up to qualify for Bristol's sixteen-car field for the IHRA Springnationals. He got the #10 spot in the show, and in the opening round, he upset Don Garlits' 6.33/226 with a 6.32/223.88. In the second round, he battled with fellow Donovan campaigner Pat Dakin. Unfortunately, Pryor's 6.34/192.30 lost to Dakin's 6.37/226. But Pat had hurt his engine on the run, and with the "break rule" in effect, Pryor got back into the show for being the Low ET loser from the round before. However, his second chance was short-lived as the car broke on the line against Sarge Arciero, driving the "Jade Grenade" in the semifinal. He was in Minnesota on July 21 for the second NHRA Division 5 race. His 6.57/219.51 beat Harold Brewer's 7.05/195 in the first round. But the car died on the line in the semifinal, and Bill had to watch as eventual winner John Wiebe soloed into the final. A week later (July 28), Pryor was at Tri-City for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He didn't hang around long, as he fouled against Chuck Kurzawa in the opening round. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.60 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. Wiebe's car failed to fire in the opening round of eliminations, and Bill advanced with a 6.65. He improved to 6.29 in the semifinal to defeat a tire-smoking John Austin. In the final, he faced Jack Hart's "Golddigger," driven by Billy Campbell. The two had a good race that saw Pryor's 6.30/225.01 get the victory over Campbell's 6.46/193. A large number of cars (39) showed up at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Bill's 6.33 qualified #14 for the sixteen-car show. But he got out of shape in the opening round and shut down to a 7.89 loss against Jack Mitchell, who won with a 6.33. He was at New York National for the PRO National Challenge race the following week. It was a 32-car field, and his 6.33/207.84 qualified #17. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Wiebe. Pryor blew his engine in their race with his 6.25/182.54 losing to John's 5.96/217. Notes: Naramore bought out Hurst in late 1974, beginning a partnership that would last the rest of Pryor's career. Longtime crewmember Tuck Jones worked that winter at Jerry Dawson's shop in St. Louis to help build the team a new chassis for an unforgettable 1975 season that culminated with the Division 3 championship; they finished ahead of Dick Rosberg, Dave Settles, Jim Bucher, and others. - Phil Burgess, Dragster Insider, 9/30/08 | The team debuted at Columbus with a second alternate 6.251/226.70 effort. They then ran what looks like a 6.72 at 181.81 in a first-round loss to Ted Wolf's 6.22/235 at IHRA Bristol later in June. Bill qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.298/227.84. He surprised John Austin in round one, 6.439/229.00 to 6.452/231.95, and beat Pat Dakin in round two, 6.389/221.13 to 7.356/145.16. Gary Beck put Bill out of the program in the semis, 6.159/229.00 to 7.422/130.24. The team improved their qualifying position in Montreal with a 6.207/217.39, claiming the #4 slot. However, Paul Longenecker upset Bill in round one with a 7.70/199.11 to 8.07/148.02 effort. The team qualified #20 at Indy with a 6.099/233.71 but lost in round one to Hank Johnson, 5.900/236.84 to 6.278/220.58. That was their last NHRA national event of the year. | Bill was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.35/214.28. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Walt Barbin. Unfortunately for Barbin, he failed to fire, and Pryor eased into the semifinals with a 6.69. There, he had a close race against the eventual winner, John Wiebe. Bill's 6.39/215.31 lost to Wiebe's 6.37/228. The team had an exciting time at St. Louis on June 1 for the AHRA Springnationals. Pryor had run 6.47/206.43 to qualify but returned to improve his time. The car got out of shape, and Bill tried to save it. He almost did, and in a last-ditch effort, he turned the wheel sharply, but the back of the dragster hit the guardrail. The rear end and transmission were destroyed, and the chassis was damaged. The car was still qualified #5 from the earlier run, so the team loaded it up and took it to the original chassis builder, Dawson. Some tubing was replaced, and a new rear end and transmission were installed. They won the first-round match at St. Louis with a 6.34/214.29. A semifinal 6.38/227.28 beat a tire-smoking Wiebe. That put Pryor into the final against Frank Bradley. A final round 6.50/220.59 got the team the victory. Won Division 3 in 1975, 1976, and 1979. Did the team go 5.97/245.90 this year? Notes: By '76, the Donovan engine was not the motor of choice for Top Fuel dragsters. But there were some strong holdouts, including this team. Their season started with the AHRA Winternationals held in Tucson. Bill qualified #12, but in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.48 lost to Jim Plummer's 6.37. The next stop was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. There, his 6.22/223.88 qualified #15. Unfortunately, the motor was damaged on that pass, and Bill could not run in eliminations. The first alternate, Bruce Hagestad, took his place in the show. Bill was the 11th alternate at Pomona. Times unknown, but no quicker than the 6.75 recorded by the 10th alternate. Bill was the eighth alternate in Gainesville (no times, but not quicker than 6.28). They got closer at Columbus, but their 6.293/222.22 was the first alternate. Bill made the show at Indy, running 6.133/235.60 for the #22 slot. Jeb Allen crossed the center line in round one, sending Bill's 6.261/229.59 on to round two. Frank Bradley ended his day there with a 6.046/197.36 taking out Pryor's troubled 12.41/59.00. Notes: Former Plueger and Gyger Mustang. Bill qualified #7 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.51. He lost to eventual winner Gary Burgin in the opening round. He did not run any NHRA national events in the funny car. | The year 1977 is one that Pryor would just as soon scratch from his memory. Pryor was spending the winters in sunny California working for Ed Donovan, and in late 1976, the team decided it was time for a new challenge. They purchased the national-record-holding Plueger & Gyger Mustang Funny Car and planned to spend 1977 match racing the Funny Car – refitted with a Camaro body - and running the national events with the dragster, but Pryor needed back surgery in April, scotching those plans. They hired Pat Dakin, Ron Correnti, and Ron O’Donnell to fill the match race dates to which they had committed until Pryor could get back on his feet. Then disaster struck again. As the team was loading up the car to leave Martin after Pryor's first race back, their generator exploded, and Pryor spent the next three weeks in a Kalamazoo, Mich., burn center and the remainder of 1977 recovering. The team sold the star-crossed Funny Car and concentrated again on Top Fuel. Notes: Bill drove Jim's Donovan-powered car to some impressive Top Speeds during '78. He started the season in Tucson, Arizona, in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #15, but in the first round, against Frank Bradley, he crossed the center line and was disqualified. He didn't qualify at the first two NHRA events, the Winternationals or the Gatornationals, but he rebounded by winning the Division 3 race at Edgewater in May. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.05/239.36. In June, he qualified #1 at US 131 Martin, Mich., for the Division 3 race with a 6.12/236.22. He lost to Johnny Abbott's 6.14/233 in the first round with a 6.23. In July, Edgewater hosted a second Division 3 race, and Bill finished runner-up to Jeg Coughlin's 5.82/225 with a 6.04/240.04 (Top Speed). He qualified #5 with a 6.01 at the PHR Championships back at US 131. A first-round 6.12/222.77 beat Connie Kalitta's 6.43/233, and in the second round, both he and Jeb Allen ran 6.04, with Pryor winning with the Top Speed of the meet at 243.90. Unfortunately, Bill hurt some parts and could not run in the semifinals. He won the Beech Bend Division race after qualifying second with a 6.04/242.58. On the national event trail, Bill was the fourth alternate at Columbus (times unknown, but the bump was 6.148). He qualified #11 at Englishtown at 6.02/235.56. A first round 6.25/238.09 fell to Richard Tharp's 6.06/245.23. The team qualified #7 at Indy at 5.95/236.22. Jeg Coughlin upset them in round one with an 8.41 to 10.88 in a battle of troubled runs. Pryor was the fifth alternate at Seattle (times unknown but on against a 6.20 bump). The team qualified #12 at the Ontario Finals with a 6.000/225.00. Notes: Bill raced at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals but failed to reach the finals. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (7th alternate but times unknown). Things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.08/242.58 was the quickest Donovan-powered car to qualify (#10). His 6.30/233.16 advanced when Gary Beck shut off in the opening round. In the second round, Pryor's 6.19/240.64 defeated Clayton Harris' 6.32/232.55. In the semifinal, his off-pace 6.56/215.31 still won over a tire-smoking Johnny Abbott at 6.69/225.56. He faced Kelly Brown in the final, and both cars slowed from their earlier times, with Brown's 6.26/244.56 getting the victory over Bill's 6.60/218.44. He won the NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater in May. Over 30 Top Fuel cars were attempting to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Pryor ran 6.04/217.39 to qualify #12. In the first round, his troubled 6.371/223.32 lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 6.091/238.72. Shortly after, he went to Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. All ten cars ran round one, with only the quickest four advancing. Bill's 6.37/205 over Bill Goudreau advanced, but while beating Lou Novotny in the semifinal with a 6.69/174.08, he had the blower explode and was out for the rest of the day. Bill was the fourth alternate at NHRA Denver with a 6.176 in late June. On July 8, he won the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove, beating Connie Kalitta in the final. Only two Donovan-powered cars qualified at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pryors' 6.03/236.84 was the quickest, getting the #12 spot in the show. Both Donovans lost in the opening round of eliminations. Pryor's 6.13/225.56 fell to Beck's 5.95/242.48. Even though the handwriting was on the wall, and the days of the Donovan were numbered in fuel racing, Bill still managed to win the next NHRA Division 3 race held at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #3 and then ran 6.36/193.96 to defeat Don Kohler in round one. Lou Novelli fouled against him in the semifinal, and Bill made an easy pass. A 6.45/183.04 got him the victory over Wayne Ernest in the final. He followed the NHRA tour into Canada for the Grandnationals. His 6.13/218.97 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He broke on the line in the first round against Kalitta. Bill ran 5.953/245.23 to qualify #18 at Indy. He beat Garth Widdison in round one, 6.043/233.76 to 9.406/90.81. However, Dave Uyehara ended his day in round two, 5.881/244.56 to 6.519/165.13. The team was the eighth alternate at Seattle (times unknown but no quicker than 6.04).
