Notes: Dale Pulde drove the car in late '75 and early '76. Chapman Automotive ran an iron block 426, then switched to Donovan. Pulde started his season at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race. All cars made three runs there. In his first race, his 6.87/155.44 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.60/218. He solo'ed in the second round with a 6.53, and in the third, he smoked the tires to a 7.19 loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.66. He also competed at the Irwindale Grand Premier race, where he qualified #16 with a 7.94. Unfortunately, he broke on his burnout in the opening round, giving eventual winner Bob Pickett a solo into round two. Dale qualified #12 at Pomona, 6.316/199.11, but lost in the first round to Jake Johnston when he lost a blower. That was Dale's last NHRA national event appearance until the World Finals, where he showed up in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang. |

Notes: Consistently fast machine with a stock stroke motor. Won 1977 IHRA Dixie Nationals and World Nationals. Set 245.23 NHRA Record at Martin, MI on 8/77. Stood through 1979, at least. Dale ran 6.24 at Pomona, 6.29 at Columbus, 6.36 at Englishtown, and 6.16 at Indy. | If I had to choose the season Pulde was most successful, it was a toss-up between '77 and '85. It would go to this "War Eagle" car for sentimental reasons. Pulde started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3. A 6.25 in the first round beat Jake Johnston, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. He went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ran 6.24 to qualify and finished runner-up to Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. The final was very interesting as Pauling had his Monza's fiberglass body come up the chassis, and he ran 13.70. Pulde had been high-tailing his out-of-shape car to an 8.55 but was said to have crossed the centerline and was disqualified. There was almost a fight as crew chief Mike Hamby argued with track personnel and Pauling about the finish. Mike said the car touched the line but did not go over it. Regardless, the decision stood. Another runner-up finish came at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Dale set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.14/234.37 before losing to Ken Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He won the NHRA Division 3 points race at Indianapolis and the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he set Low ET at 6.24 before beating Tom McEwen in the final. Another win came his way at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race held there. He beat Chuck Finders in the final with a 6.22/236.22 (Top Speed). His next win came at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on June 5. He had beaten Jerry Boldenow and Safford to reach the finals, where he stopped Ray Sherman for the title. Bristol was the team's next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Pulde qualified #2 with a 6.45. Another 6.45 at 227.27 beat Safford in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.39/222.22 beat Denny Savage's 6.42/224. In the semifinals, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.28/233.76, covering Johnny White's ailing Mustang. He went up against Larry Fullerton in the title round. Fullerton's Mustang broke, and Pulde legged it to 6.30/233.76 for yet another win. It was off to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals on July 4. A 6.33 qualified #2, but in the first round, he and Fullerton both smoked the tires, with Larry's 8.23/152 winning over Pulde's 9.45/107.91. The following week (July 10), the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde only qualified #14 with a 6.36/234.98. In the first round, his 6.46 lost to Sherman's 6.33. Two weeks later, Pulde was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he reset the IHRA Funny Car speed record to 241.28. The funnies were flying here, and Dale qualified #2 with a 6.21. He then beat Shirl Greer and Tom Prock to reach the final, facing Burgin. The two had an amazing race, with Pulde running 6.09/241.28 only to lose to Burgin's 6.08. He made up for his runner-up finish by winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron Dragway on July 31. He qualified with a 6.80/222 and then set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.37/235.60 (track record). In the final, all he needed was a 6.67/191 to beat a tire-smoking Bill Pryor at 7.22/194. That was followed by a win at Englishtown's Eighth Annual Funny Car Race of Champions on August 4. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.47/234 to beat Gordon Mineo in his first race, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.34/236 beat a fouling Burgin in his second race. His final-round opponent was Arnie Swensen, who had gotten the second-lowest ET with a 6.42. Dale got the victory with another strong run of 6.35/235. A couple of days later (August 7), he was at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Nationals. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals before the car broke on the line, advancing eventual winner Dale Emery into the final. A week after that (August 14), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he reset the NHRA Funny Car speed record to 245.23. It was another sixteen-car field, and Pulde set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.00/247.93 over John Pott. He "slowed" to 6.20/240 in round two to beat Ron Colson's 6.52 in the "Hawaiian," and a semifinal 6.13/245.23 beat Bob Pickett's 6.21. In the final, he went up against Burgin. Pulde had difficulties and slowed to a 15.22 in a runner-up finish to Burgin's 6.61/231. Dale qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/240.00 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships on August 21. But he boiled the tires in the second round and lost to Emery, who would win in Mike Burkhart's Camaro. Pulde qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, but he fell off to 6.56/225.56 in the first round and lost to Al Segrini's 6.39/225. |

Notes: Beautiful car. Despite stock stroke motor, set Top Speed everywhere it went. Photo from Gainesville, FL-1978. | After a great '77 season, the '78 season was very humbling to Dale Pulde and Mike Hamby. They purchased a new car just because of all the runs they put on their last one. The car came from Plueger and he had changed his chassis jig so that the engine sat higher and the frame was narrower. According to Pulde, “he never liked this car.†It was very hard on parts. Pulde had also purchased 200 sets of bad oil rings from a manufacturer that were killing the cylinder walls. Despite the setbacks, he did win his first NHRA National event this season. Their season started badly when they failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But things turned for the better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Dale ran 6.29/241.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. An opening round 6.35/224.43 beat Tom Hoover and in round two his 6.37/234.37 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.44. Another 6.37 at 236.84 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.54/212 in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final and Dale picked up his first NHRA victory with a 6.42/234.37 over Meyer's 6.52/213. Hamby claimed that they "never had the valve covers off" after the win. It looked like it was the start of a great season when they went to Darlington the following week (March 19) for the IHRA Winternationals and won that too. The track was bad and Dale's 6.88/221.67 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. A 6.49/224 in the first round, beat Les Cassidy while a semifinal 6.44/228.42 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.97/208 in the "Trojan Horse.†He ran alternate Frank Oglesby in the final and won easily with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.35/229.00. The team then went to Seattle in April for its opening race of '78 and won that too. A final round 6.49 beat Tommy Ivo's 6.64. Pulde also set Top Speed at 231. The next day he won the Portland Opener. Once again, it was Pulde against Ivo and this time they both smoked the tires, but Pulde's 6.96 beat Ivo's 7.23. Earlier, Dale had set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.38/233. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.35/233. A first-round 6.59/223 beat Murf McKinney and in round two, his 6.49 advanced when Jimmy King fouled. He soloed with a tire-smoking 11.27/79 in the semifinals when Dennis Lockaby failed to show. But in the final, Dale had problems and shut off against Denny Savage who went on to win with a 7.12/223. In May, the "War Eagle" was at Blaney for a four-car show. Dale ran 6.48 and 6.45/217.06 (Low ET and Top Speed) while beating Shirl Greer and Fullerton. He was declared the winner of the event. On May 21, the team was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.32, but he was upset in the first round, when Savage's 6.26 beat his 6.35. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/232.56 qualified #11, but Dale fouled against Gary Burgin in the first round. The following week (June 18) found the team at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #7 with a 6.51, but picked up to a 6.33/231.95 in the first round, to beat Larry Gould's SOHC-Ford powered car. A solo 6.53 advanced in round two when Roger Lindamood broke on the line. But once again, it was Savage who stopped Pulde in the semifinals with a 6.11 to Dale's 6.32. Early in July, Pulde was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.72 lost to Fullerton's 6.75. The team was down after not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. That was followed up by a so-so performance at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. Dale’s 6.40 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.69/200.04 lost to Lindamood's 6.64/213. Another surprise was the team's failure to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The team rebounded by winning the IHRA US Open at Rockingham on August 20. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.46 and then he beat Lindamood and Pete Miner (with a 6.48) to reach the final against Pete Williams in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Dale got out first in the final and his 6.52/235.60 (Top Speed) beat Williams' 6.51. | Best NHRA times of 6.198 at Indy and 241.93 at the Gators. Twice ran 6.29 as well. Did Dale go 6.15/247 somewhere this year? |

Notes: The team sold their '78 car and borrowed the '77 car to run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, the team failed to qualify. The new car was ready for the NHRA Gatornationals, where it was awarded the "Best Appearing." It didn't run too bad either, as Pulde qualified #13 with a 6.39/228.42. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and shut off to 16.30-42.69 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 6.35/239. The following week, the team was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Pulde "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked the tires in their race, and Dale ran 6.32 to advance. He improved to 6.21 in the semi-final to beat Tripp Shumake's 6.82. He faced Paul Smith in the final, and Pulde got his first win of the year with his 6.73/230.17 beating Smith's 6.72/221. He also made it into the final at the next IHRA race, the Dixie Nationals held in Atlanta. There he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the final. He did not compete at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bernstein stopped him again at the next IHRA race, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. This time it happened in the first round. Pulde overpowered the track, and his 6.72/232.55 lost to Bernstein's 6.19/232. He qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.17/231.95. An off-pace 6.80/190.67 in the first round lost to Ron Colson's 6.49/228 in the "Hawaiian." Dale was much happier at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.27 "only" qualified #4. Both he and Frank Oglesby smoked the tires in round one, but Pulde's 6.85 came out on top. He beat Beadle's 6.87 in the semi-final with a 6.49. In the final, he faced Bernstein. Kenny slept, and his 6.31/223 lost to Pulde's 6.47/234.98. At the end of June, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein. This time Kenny fouled against him. Pulde then lost in the semi-final. A good year with a lot of qualifying success and some round wins. Best times at NHRA Indy in qualifying at 6.084/239.36. Notes: Stock stroke motor. | Dale started the '80 season by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #8 with a 6.12/238.09, and another 6.12 won his first-round race over Jim Dunn. In round two, he beat Hank Johnson with a 6.21. In the semifinals, he beat Kenny Bernstein and moved into the final against Ron Colson, who was driving the "Hawaiian." Dale won his second NHRA National event with a 6.25/238.72 that beat Colson, who crossed the centerline. He survived until the semifinals at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.31/212.26 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.04/233. The "War Eagle" was voted "best-appearing car" at the NHRA Gatornationals, and Pulde proved that it could go too by qualifying #7. His 6.13/232.55 advanced in the first round when Gordie Bonin crossed the centerline. He picked up to 6.07/239.36 in round two to beat Paul Smith. He faced Prudhomme in the semifinals, but an oil leak developed on the line, and he had to shut off. The following week (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and Dale's 6.48 qualified #5. Once again, he ran well, beating low qualifier Smith in the first round and working his way to the final, where he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Dale had problems and shut down to an 11.52 while Beadle motored to the victory with a 6.06/237. It was pretty impressive that he at least made it into the semifinals at all these races. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Pulde had an interesting qualifying run. He started to go into a wheelstand, and instead of easing off the throttle, he just shifted it into high gear to get the front wheels back down onto the track. When he did that, the fire extinguisher came loose and cracked him in the forehead. So, on that pass, he qualified #4 with a 6.14, and to boot, he got a nice-sized bump on his forehead. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced Shirl Greer, and both of them went up in smoke, but Pulde's back-peddling 6.35/221 beat Greer's 6.90/181. In the semifinals, he and opponent Billy Meyer went up in tire smoke again, but once again, Pulde came out on top. In the final, he faced Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. Unfortunately, the "War Eagle" busted a rear end, and Tripp made an easy pass for the victory. Things didn't go as well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his best of 6.19/243.24 (Top Speed and a new track record) failed to qualify. He was at Maple Grove for the Jungle Jim Memorial race in May. It was a six-car show with all the cars making two passes each and the two lowest ET meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.27/229.00 in his first race to beat Gary Burgin's 6.43/229, and a slightly quicker 6.26/232.55 won his second race over Bruce Larson. His ET was good enough to transfer into the final, where he would face Roy Harris, who had run 6.13 for a final-round appearance. But Roy had trouble in the semifinal, blowing an engine and turning the car into a fireball. He and his crew did an amazing job swapping out the engine and getting the car ready for the final with Pulde. But the final saw Harris get out of shape and cross the centerline while Dale improved again with a 6.24/222.22 for the victory. He did not run at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals as it was rained out until May 25. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #2 with a 6.14/238.72, right behind Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" at 6.12. He beat Bernstein in the first round, but in round two, he got out of shape against Ed McCulloch and shut off. The mile-high air of Denver gave the team some problems in qualifying for the eight-car show at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Dale was one of many that failed to qualify. In July, the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde's 6.10 qualified #7. He beat John Collins in the opening round before being shut off on the line in round two with a fuel leak. A week later (July 20), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The team's performance was off here as they only qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show and, in the first round, lost to John Pott in the "Mr. Norm" car. On July 27, Pulde showed up at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.12. In the first round, he took an easy win over alternate Don Nieves, who was in for Tom McEwen. In the semifinals, his 6.37 beat Collins. This set up a final-round meeting with #2 qualifier Prudhomme. Prudhomme had the edge during eliminations running 6.2s. Sure enough, the "Snake" scored a 6.23 in the final to win. Things took a turn for the better up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The race was delayed for one week due to rain. Dale qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.20/225.56. He had a bit of luck in round one, where he got crossed up, got off the gas, and then hammered it again, went into a wheelstand, and yet still ran 6.25! This beat Frank Mancuso, who fouled anyway. In the semifinals, a 6.19/237.46 beat Tim Grose who overpowered the track. In the final, he faced Dale Armstrong. Dale was tough as he had set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.10, and he won his semifinal race with a 6.15. In the final, Pulde ran his best of the weekend, 6.16 at 237.46. This got the win, while Armstrong must have hopped it up a bit and went into heavy tire smoke before shutting down. Usually, Dale would have been at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, but the rain date for the Grandnationals conflicted with that. Pulde showed at New England for the NHRA Division 1 final on August 17. A 6.21/224.43 qualified #5 for the eight-car show. But this field was tough. In the first round, Pulde improved to 6.13/223.88, yet he lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.01/240. Dale's best NHRA ET was a first-round 6.022 at the Summernationals, and the best speed was the 243.24 at the Cajuns. He also went 6.044 in qualifying at Indy. |

Notes: Pulde started his '81 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.19/220.04. His 6.25/231.95 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.11/241 in Johnny Loper's Arrow in the opening round. He did much better on March 8 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Pulde qualified #1 with a 6.241/216.34, and in the first round, he beat a tire-smoking John Force with a 6.28/223.88. The Challenger had both front wheels off the track for most of the run in the second round, but his 6.68/217 still came out on top over Dennis Geisler's troubled 10.18. In the semifinal, he advanced with a 6.27 when Bob Pickett was shut off on the line with an oil leak. He took the victory in the final over Dale Armstrong with a 6.26/229. He had another good showing the following week (March 15) at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.04/233.16 qualified the "War Eagle" in the #8 spot. In the first round, he beat John Collins' wheelstanding Datsun with a 6.10. He ran an engine saving 13.94 in the second round when Armstrong was unable to run. In the semifinal, a 6.33/223.32 beat Shumake's 6.75/174. All looked well for another victory, but Gordie Bonin stopped him with a 6.18/241 in the final. Dale ran 6.21/223.3 in a runner-up effort. On March 22, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/236. Pulde made it into the semifinal before losing to Kenny Bernstein. Things did not go well in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held near the end of April. Dale's 6.21 failed to qualify for the eight-car field that had a 6.16 "bump." Dale won the NHRA Eastern Regional on May 3 at Raceway Park. He beat Tim Grose in the final with a 6.02 (Low ET). In June, at the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.25/216.34 qualified #15, and he lost to Roy Harris in the first round. He qualified #15 again at the next NHRA show he attended, the Summernationals at Englishtown. This time, he got the spot with a 6.20/231.95. He got around a tire-smoking Gary Burgin in the first round with a 6.14/234.37. But in the second round, he shut down to a 10.16 loss to Don Prudhomme. Pulde was at the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol in July. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but he met up with low qualifier Billy Meyer in the first round, smoked the tires, and lost. Dale ran a 5.97 in qualifying for the NHRA US Nationals, and it only placed him #5 in the tough field. He lasted until the second round, where he ran a 6.15 that lost to Raymond Beadle's 5.92 in the "Blue Max." It was back to Bristol on September 13 for the IHRA US Open. Dale qualified #3 in the eight-car show, and the first-round beat Al Segrini with a 6.11/235.60 to the "Super Brut's" 6.29/219. In the semifinal, he smoked the tires to a 12.73 and lost to Paul Smith driving the "Entertainer." Fremont hosted the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 4, and Pulde set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.943/227.84. An off-pace first-round 6.34/229.00 lost to Burgin's 6.09/229. He closed out the NHRA season by qualifying #4 with a 6.01/234.98 at OCIR on October 18 for the World Finals. Dale lasted until the semifinals before smoking the tires to a 6.92/154.10 loss to Jim Dunn's 6.06/238. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Dale ran well, but to reach the final, you had to have one of the two lowest ETs after three rounds of racing. He didn't get into the final, but he turned in some good times. A 6.16/226.70 beat Gary Densham and in his third race, a 6.10/237.46 beat Tim Grose. All in all, it was a good season for the "War Eagle" team. Dale's best NHRA times were the 5.943 at Fremont and 241.93 at Indy. Where was the 245 run? |

Notes: Photo from Pop Rod 82. Got Miller Sponsorship late in the year, kept gold-orange colors, went to "Warrior" name due to competitor brewery's eagle on its logo. | Pulde started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 6.04/240.64. Both he and opponent Mike Dunn had problems in their first-round race and Mike's 7.48/225 beat Dale's 7.66/110.11. Surprisingly, Pulde failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he again qualified #5, this time with a 6.07/238.09. An off pace 6.43/224.43 lost to Paul Smith's 6.31/233 in the first round. Things went more Dale's way the following week (March 21) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified for the eight-car show and went on to beat John Pott in the final with a 6.26/238.09 (Top Speed). Another win came in April at an eight-car show in Atlanta. There, he set Low ET in the final with a 5.99 to beat Bob Hilton in the "Custom Body" Omni. The next time he was in Atlanta his 6.17/226.13 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Southern Nationals. Rockingham hosted IHRA's second event of the year, the Pro-Am Championships, on May 2. Pulde qualified for the show, but in the first round, against Kenny Bernstein, he had a motor let go on the line. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, Dale lost in round two. The next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field and Pulde's 6.13/237.45 qualified #4. But in the first round, his fuel switch malfunctioned, and he shut off giving Gary Burgin a solo into the semifinal. NHRA's next race was the Springnationals at National Trail. Dale qualified #7 with a 6.07/238.72, and he beat Mike Dunn in the first round, before losing to Al Segrini in the second. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 6.03 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, and he beat Segrini in the first round, and in the semifinals, his 6.29 stopped Raymond Beadle's 6.31 in the "Blue Max.†This put Dale into the final against Tom Anderson. Dale picked up the win with a 6.04. He didn't have to wait long before he got himself another victory as he went to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals on June 27 and won that too. There he ran 6.59/212.76 and 6.39/217.39 to stop John Speelman and Tim Grose in the first two rounds (eight-car field), then in the final he faced John Pott driving Larry Coogle's "Sting.†Larry got crossed up and Pulde got another win with a 6.33/205.94. Dale’s best NHRA national event times of the year came at the Indy Nationals, where he qualified #9 at 5.922/245.23, but lost in round one, to Don Prudhomme. He was runner-up to Rob Williams at the Division 4 event at Green Valley, TX, 6.36/222 to Dale’s shutting off 6.51/155. Best times were 5.922/245.23 in qualifying at Indy. Dale also went 5.936 and 5.99 at NHRA Fremont. |

Notes: Dale Pulde started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.109/245.23. But he lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.43/224 in the first round with a 6.86/241.93 when both had traction problems. Shortly after that, he took a break and got married. In March, Dale was back behind the wheel at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.00/247.93 qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 6.05/238.72 beat a tire-smoking Ken Veney. A second-round 6.02/241.28 beat John Lombardo's 6.05/239. He got lucky in the semifinals, where he smoked the tires and shut down to a 7.95, but opponent Tom Anderson was disqualified for crossing the centerline. He faced Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Frank had been running low 5.9s throughout eliminations, and although Pulde picked it up to 5.98/243.36 in the final, he still finished runner-up to Hawley's 5.92/242. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals the following week. A 6.39/228.42 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost in a tire-smoker with Bernstein in the semifinals. Things didn't go so well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Pulde couldn't get near the 6.00 "bump" as the best run he had in qualifying was a 6.47/175.09. So after not qualifying there, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, where he qualified #1 with a 5.98 (Low ET) at a track speed record of 247.25. He then went on to win, stopping Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 6.11/240 to Beadle's 6.20. Dale ran the Fuel Wars program at Fremont in April. He made passes of 6.62/172, 6.74/210, and 6.84, winning 1 out of 3 matches. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.08/245.23, but his opening round 6.14/238.72 lost to Bernstein's 6.02/242. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, his 6.01 qualified last in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.31/194.38 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car, but in the semifinal, his 5.89/247 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.81/246. The following week (June 12), he wasint Columbus. He qualified #6 for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.00/245.23, and in round one, his 6.07/243.24 beat Tom McEwen's quicker 6.06/234. In round two, his 6.40/229.59 lost to Johnson's 6.19/234. He was at Maple Grove near the end of the month for the Super Stock Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinal of the eight-car show before losing to eventual winner Hawley. He did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He did race at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he became the sixth entry in the Crane Cams 250 mph Club for Funny Car with a 252.80 run on July 10, 1983, at Milan, Michigan. He failed to reach the final there. The following week (July 17), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.08/243.24 qualified #13. In the opening round, his 6.16 fell to Al Segrini's 5.96. The NHRA Mile High Nationals was just an eight-car show, and Pulde ran 6.15/231.95 to qualify #7. In round one, he slowed to 6.29/229.00 in a loss to Bernstein's 6.08/237. Dale also ran 249.30 in 1983. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983. |

Notes: Dale's season didn't turn out the way he would have liked. For the first time in ten years of competition, he failed to reach a single final round in NHRA or IHRA events. He did run 5.60s with a 5.690 at Pomona and a 5.64 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pulde started the season with a first-round loss to Frank Hawley at the NHRA Winternationals. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/243.90, but in the first round, the Firebird broke, advancing Al Segrini. His first IHRA event was the Winternationals held at Darlington on March 5. Dale qualified #11 with a 6.11, but he again lost in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he lasted until the second round, where he fouled against eventual winner Billy Meyer. Rockingham hosted the second IHRA race on May 6, the Pro-Am Championships. Pulde ran well but failed to make the finals. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field that made qualifying tough. Pulde made the show and beat Jim White in the first round, with an engine destroying 5.99/238. Unfortunately, he could not race Meyer in the semifinals due to the damage. He had another semifinal finish at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Pulde had downed Tom McEwen in round two with a 5.83/227.84 before losing to Meyer in the semis. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.00/234.98, but in the first round, McEwen's 5.93/247 stopped his off pace 7.39/120. Dale got a final round appearance at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #2 with a 5.86 and made it into the final, but the car broke, and Hawley soloed to win in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He qualified #6 with a 5.87/232.55 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. His 6.08/227.84 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 5.96/247 in the "Blue Max." After Denver, he was still holding in the seventh spot in the NHRA points. Pulde qualified well at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals, but he lost early in eliminations. The next NHRA event on the schedule was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Dale qualified #4 and lasted until round two before losing to Jim Head. Dale ran 5.86/247 at ADRA Dragway 42. Photo from Indy 1984. |

Notes: This car was literally put together in the pits at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals by Mike Hamby and Dale Pulde. On the car's maiden run, Dale ran 6.10/183. After some adjustments to the spoiler, he came back out and ran 6.01/247. On his first official qualifying pass and third run ever on the car, Pulde blasted it to a 5.91/252.80. On Saturday, he ran an amazing 5.76/263 in the heat of the day (85 degrees). Then during the "Night of Fire," Dale ran 5.69/256.41 to take the pole. Pulde went on to win by beating Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.71/260. He ran 5.68/260 in the second round to beat John Collins. Another 5.69 at 257 beat Kenny's quicker 5.66 (Low ET) at 258 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" broke on the line, and Pulde took the victory. They next towed to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.97/252.38 qualified #13. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, with a 5.86/251. In the second round, Pulde's tire-smoking 6.56/152.18 lost to Bernstein's 5.74/249. The "High Life Warrior" picked up another win at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Dale qualified #1 with a 5.66/249.30. A first-round 5.84/236.84 beat Dominic Santucci, and in the semifinals, he beat Joe Amato's 5.98/221 with a 5.70/249.30. In the final, he beat Bernstein with a 5.90/247.25. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Dale ran 5.89/253.23 to qualify #12. Ed McCulloch fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 5.82/248.48. But in round two, he smoked the tires once again and lost to Don Prudhomme. The following week (July 7), he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1, and his 5.78/252 beat Tim Grose's 5.85/233 for yet another victory in the final. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.71/249 qualified #5, and in round one, his 5.78 advanced when Ron Correnti shut off with problems. But in round two, the car went into a wheelstand, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. He then went to St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, and he bagged that one as well, stopping John Pott in the final. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 by resetting both ends of the track record with a 5.73/251.39. He ran 5.87/238.09 he beat Jim Head in the opening round. A round two 5.83/244.56 beat Rick Johnson's 6.04/229 in the "Hawaiian." Another 5.83 at 245.23 stopped a tire-smoking John Force in the semifinal. Once again, he faced the red and white "Budweiser King" of Bernstein in the final. The two had a great race that saw Pulde's 5.81/250.69 come out second best to Kenny's 5.79/245. | At the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, Pulde qualified #2 with a 5.612/255.24. He Defeated #10 qualifier Graeme Cowin in round 1 with a 5.651/251.53 & #6 qualifier John Force in round 2 with a 5.722/246.44, but lost to #8 qualifier & eventual winner Tim Grose in the Semis. | Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. |

Notes: Pulde started the '85 season with the Firebird. At Pomona for the Winternationals, Dale qualified #7 with a 5.83/251.67. A first-round 5.84 beat Billy Meyer and a second round 5.74/252 beat John Force's 5.76/258. He had a little luck in the semifinals when he broke, but his opponent Ed McCulloch fouled and Pulde found himself in the final. He ran Al Segrini for the title, but his 6.02/233.52 finished runner-up to Al's 5.78/227. | At Baylands 2/85 4 Car Funny Car Show, Pulde ran 6.23/211 against Sherm Gunn in Round 1, 5.77/245 against Mike Dunn in Round 2 & ran low ET & Top Speed 5.714/250 to win the event over Don Prudhomme. | At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Dale lasted until the semifinals where he lost to McCulloch due to crossing the centerline. Crewchief Mike Hamby argued hard with IHRA officials saying that the car didn't cross the centerline, but the decision held. At the Gatornationals, a 5.72/244.69 qualified #6. Pulde beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.87/243.63. In round two, a 5.91/252 advanced when McCulloch lost a blower. But in the semifinals, Dale lost to John Lombardo's 5.76/255 in the "Blue Max." At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, a 5.93/246.71 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in which Pulde smoked the tires and lost. The "old" Firebird proved it could still win by winning the IHRA Pro Am Championships at Rockingham in May. Dale beat Billy Meyer in the final even though they both ran 5.80's. Pulde's was at 254. The last race the Firebird was used at was the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Once again the old car proved itself by qualifying #1 with a 5.74 (Low ET) at 251.81. Unfortunately, Dale smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Don Prudhomme. At the next event, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, they literally finished the new Buick Somerset in the pits for the race. They went on to qualify first and win the race. |

Notes: Pulde always ran well at Pomona and continued to do so at the '86 NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.848/250.69 and improved to a 5.691/250.00 in the first round while beating Ed McCulloch's 5.827/240.64. A 5.777/244.56 advanced into the semifinals when Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" for the first time, crossed the center line and ran 6.313/159.85. Dale smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 13.096/61.09 loss to John Force's 5.756/255.68. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.794/255.97 qualified #4. Rain came and postponed the race from March 16 to the 23rd, but Pulde was scheduled to run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and left Gainesville to run the IHRA event. He was probably happy that he did as he won the race. He qualified #2 and made his way to the final against Paul Smith, whom he beat with a 5.68/254.23 (Low ET and Top Speed). Dale was the number one qualifier at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.747/257.14. At the NHRA Winston Finals with the RATT War Eagle, Pulde Qualified #9 with a 5.737/260.56. Pulde would face #1 Qualifier Johnny West in Round 1, running 5.809/250.62 to defeat West's 5.909/248.89. Pulde faced #13 Qualifier Jim Head in round 2, where Pulde won with a 5.868/248.27 while Head drifted toward the retaining wall and lost at 7.676/106.87. In the semis, Pulde faced #7 qualifier Billy Meyer, where Pulde Smoked the tires & watched the eventual runner-up Meyer streak away to the win at 5/712/246.71 as Dale's 10.096/76.69 followed. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Finished #3 in NHRA points in '85. - Mark York |

Notes: Returned to "War Eagle" namesake after replacing Miller Beer with the hard rock group "RATT" & "Rogersound Labs" as new sponsors. We need to confirm that Dale drove this car in 1987. He drove the In & Out Burger Omni/Charger in NHRA competition. Times needed for the year. |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1988. Dale qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.601/255.68. He improved to 5.452/268.25 in round two to beat Darrell Amberson and an even better 5.429/269.05 in the semifinals beat a tire-smoking john Force. He faced Jim Head in the final. Head had problems and Pulde got the victory with a 6.024/223.26. NHRA best times of 5.404 at Indy and 270.27 at the Pomona finals. Formerly listed 274 mph. Did that occur at IHRA Ennis in October? |

Notes: Dale qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.399/268.65. Unfortunately, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. The team ran a very limited schedule, showing up mostly at races close to home. In July, Pulde was driving the car at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.600/250.34 qualified #13. A first-round 5.80 lost to Jim White's 5.67. He also attempted to qualify at the next NHRA race, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle, but his 5.752/201.79 best was good for second alternate. After skipping the next few races, the team showed up at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Fallnationals where they qualified #3 with a 5.492/266.82. Pulde lost in the first round. His best NHRA outing of '89 came at the season ending World Finals back at Pomona. Dale ran a 5.415/266.35 to qualify #8. A first-round 5.529/266.11 beat Al Hofmann and in round two a 5.574/251.11 got around Jerry Caminito. In the semifinals, he lost to Bruce Larson's 5.37/252 with a 5.569/264.00. |

At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Dale ran 5.386/270.51 to qualify #7. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.335/262.39 to 5.43/263, and in the second round, his 5.329/268.81 beat Hoover's 5.47/266. Pulde moved into the final by getting around John Force in the semifinals. It was a close race as both drivers ran 5.33 (Dale at 5.330/260.86, John at 5.334/274), but the "In-N-Out Burger" car got the win. In the final, Dale was up against the '89 NHRA Champ, Bruce Larson. Bruce had problems and shut off while Pulde motored to a 5.371/266.27 for the victory. The team also ran at Sonoma (5.665/262.46 Q16 and a first-round loss to Larson, 5.30/276 to 5.672/247.04), Seattle (5.703/262.92 Q15 and a first-round loss to Jim White, 5.44/262 to 7.30/112), and the Pomona Finals (5.672/261.39 second alternate). |

Notes: Pulde qualified #8 at Pomona for NHRA Winternationals with 5.24/281.07. He improved to 5.11/285.53 in the opening to defeat Gary Bolger. In round two, his 5.12/284.27 beat Cruz Pedregon's 5.20/287. But despite running a consistent 5.13/283.37 in the semi-final, he got left on by John Force, and Force's 5.15/288 held on to win. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.18/282.84 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he shut down early with problems in the first round and lost to Gordon Mineo's 6.14/163. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 there at 5.12/289.76. But he went home early again as his off-pace 5.82/240.77 fell to Bolger's 5.35/262 in the first round. Dale's best times were 5.088 at Ennis and 289.76 at Gainesville. |
