Notes: Everyone expected this car to win the NHRA Funny Car Championship in '89. After winning the championship the previous four years, it was a little disappointing how the season went for Kenny. It started at Pomona for the Winternationals. Kenny qualified way down the ladder in the #13 spot with a 5.47/266.74. He improved to a 5.42/264.16 in the first round to beat Dale Pulde. In round two, a consistent 5.43/269.21 beat Tom Hoover. In the semifinal, he beat Chris Lane with a 5.48/265.33. In the final, he met who was soon to be his nemesis, Bruce Larson. And sure enough, Larson scored the win over Bernstein. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Supernationals. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.30/270.27 but broke a rear end in the second round and lost to Art Hendey. The Gatornationals was the next stop; a 5.39/269.70 qualified #6. He lost to Larson in the second round. At the fourth race of the year, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.47/266.27, but once again, he lost in the second round, this time to Eric Reed. He looked like the Bernstein of old at the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #1 with a 5.25 (Low ET) at 280.11. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round and then got a couple of lucky breaks when, in round two, both he and Hoover smoked the tires, but Kenny's 6.45/232 held on for the win. In the semifinals, he ran a 5.42/270 to win over Ed McCulloch, who shut off to a 10.00. In the final, he ran Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Probe, and once again, he had a little luck when Oswald broke, and Bernstein scored his first victory of the season. The next race was the Cajun Nationals. Kenny used a 5.50/266.50 to qualify #4. In the first round against John Martin, the car broke on the burnout, giving Martin an easy single. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals at National Trail. Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.33/269.13. He beat Kalitta in the first round with another 5.33 but smoked the tires and lost to Jim White in round two. A strong performance was turned in at the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.44/265.72. In the first round, both he and Johnny West had problems, and both ran 5.60, West at 253 and Bernstein at 212.31, but the Buick still won the race. A 5.47/270.92 (Top Speed) beat Hoover's 5.68 in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.73/231 with a 5.48/254.47. Once again, he met with Oswald in the final, and the results were the same, with Kenny's 5.51/265.72 beating Oswald's close 5.54/258. He didn't have to wait long for his third victory of the year as it came at the next event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #3 with a 5.35, beat Hendey in the first round, and John Force in the second with a 5.36/272. He ran a solo 5.40/270 in the semifinals when Prudhomme broke just off the line. In the final, he was paired with McCulloch, and Kenny ran a 5.41 to win over Ed's 5.50. He was a favorite to win when the teams headed to Denver for the Mile High Nationals. He didn't disappoint in qualifying when his 5.53/263.38 (Top Speed) got the pole. He beat Hendey in the first round, and a 5.62/254 beat Mike Dunn's close 5.65 in round two. But in the semifinals, Oswald put him away with a track record 5.50. The California Nationals was next, and again Kenny qualified well with a 5.39/273.88, taking the #3 spot. Unfortunately, he and Tony McCallum ran 5.52 in the first round, with Tony winning. The next race was the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.34/278.89 (Top Speed). He beat Hendey's 5.57/260 in the first round with a 5.35/276.66. In round two, a 5.41/248.23 beat R.C. Sherman, and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Prudhomme with a 5.34/276.07, beating the "Snake's" 5.40/263. In the final, he met Larson, and despite running quicker and faster with 5.37/273.22 times, he lost to Larson's holeshot 5.40/271. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.43/266.11 qualified #2. When McCallum broke, he ran an easy 11.70/72.42 in the first round. But in round two against Larson, Kenny ran even worse when he smoked the tires to a 14.35/70.56 to lose to Bruce's 5.51/271. Kenny and Dale probably thought things couldn't get worse when they went to Indy for the US Nationals. A 5.37/276.75 qualified #8 there, but he lost to Hoover in round one. They went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals and set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.35/264.71. Kenny got past a fouling Gary Bolger in the first round, and in the semifinals, he ran a 5.64/216.35 that beat Doc Halladay's quicker 5.61. In the final, he met the second qualifier, R.C. Sherman, who beat him with a 5.50 to the "Budweiser King's" 5.54. On September 10, he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. A 5.51/264.41 qualified #2. He smoked the tires to a 6.67 in the first round but still beat Halladay. A 5.54/272 beat Johnny West's 5.98/244 in the semifinals. Kenny got his first IHRA victory of the year when he stopped a tire-smoking Darrell Amberson in the final with a 5.56/273.53. A week later (September 17), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 280 in qualifying with a 5.25/280.37 (#3). Another 5.25 at 279.06 beat a fouling Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in round two, he smoked the tires in a 6.80/141.17 loss to Larson's 5.30/276. He also lost in the second round at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. There, his 5.44 lost to Oswald's 5.34. The following week (October 8), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.21/277.60. Another 5.21 at 278.46 beat Hendey in the first round. A 5.24/277.43 advanced in round two when Tony McCallum broke, but in the semifinals against Prudhomme, he smoked the tires to a losing 9.29/79.33. The NHRA tour then went to Arizona for the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.48 at a track record 271.98. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, while a 5.49/267 in round two advanced when Jim White lost a blower on the line. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.56/268.17, losing to eventual winner Larson's 5.43/268. At the season-ending World Finals at Pomona, Bernstein did not end his Funny Car career as he would have liked. He qualified #4 with a 5.32/278.46, but in the first round, against Jerry Caminito, he lost with a 7.30/184.84. In the season-long NHRA points chase, he finished third behind Larson and Prudhomme. In the IHRA standings, he finished #7, even though he only ran two events. Some drivers would have loved to have seasons like that, but it was below his expectations for Kenny. Set 5.257 national record at Memphis 89. Ran 276.75 at 89 Big Bud Shootout. Photo from Indy 1989. |

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 4., Fall 1990 issue has 283.91. | Bernstein made his Top Fuel debut at Firebird Raceway in January It was a test and tune race, and he made six passes. The first was a half-track 7.17/96.96. The next three runs were 5.58/240.38, a 5.31/260.86, and a 5.42/264.16. His next run was the best, a 5.16/266.90. His last run resulted in a 5.47/221.29. Not too bad for his first time out, but he hoped for better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Crew Chief Dale Armstrong gave him what he wanted when he tuned it up to a 5.07/268.09 to qualify #7 at Pomona. Kenny got lucky in round one, when his tire smoking 5.72/252.95 beat Chris Karamesines who was also having trouble. In round two, Kenny stepped up to 5.01/276.15 while beating Darrell Gwynn's identical 5.01 at 279. Unfortunately, Bernstein fouled against eventual winner Lori Johns in the semifinals. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #14 with a 5.16/274.13, but lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. Bernstein almost broke into the "four's" at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals when he ran 5.00/277.34 to qualify #6. But in the first round, he lost to Eddie Hill. His luck wasn't made better at Darlington the following week for the IHRA Winternationals. There he smoked the tires and lost to alternate Fred Farndon in round one. The next stop for the "Budweiser King" was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.08/267.37 qualified #5, but in the first round, both he and Karamesines smoked the tires and the "Greek" recovered first for the win. The team was eager to get past the first-round, but it didn't happen at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There Bernstein's 5.14/279.32 qualified #14, and he lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round. He was at Memphis in May for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals and for the first time since Pomona, Kenny made it past the first-round. He qualified #5 with a 5.06. He ran 5.06 in the first two rounds to beat Jim Head and Hill to advance into the semifinals where he lost to Joe Amato's 4.99. |

Notes: Kenny started the '91 season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.01/289.76 (Top Speed of the Meet). Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Hawley in the first round. He didn't qualify all that well at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.10/284.72 got him the #11 spot in the field. He did well, though, making the best of it. In the semifinals, he ran 4.99/288.18 (Top Speed) to beat Joe Amato's quicker 4.96/281. In the final, opponent Craig Smith broke, and Kenny ran 5.01/287.63 for the victory. He doubled it up by winning NHRA's next race as well, the Supernationals at Houston. There he qualified #2 with a 4.94/290.97. Another 4.94 at 285.71 beat Tom McEwen's 4.99/278 in round two while a 4.97/289.11 beat Jim Head's 5.01/260 in the semifinals. He won his second race in a row with a final round of 4.95/291.54 (Top Speed and a new track record) over Gene Snow's ailing car. Bernstein then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and won that, too. It was an eight-car show, and Kenny took the pole with a 5.22/271.65 (Top Speed). A first-round 5.25/269.02 beat Doug Herbert, while in the semifinals, he beat Pat Dakin with a 5.22/269. He met Tommy Johnson Jr. in the final, and his Low ET of the meet 5.20 at 270.53 beat Johnson's 5.50. His winning streak came to an end at the NHRA Gatornationals. He set a new track speed record in qualifying with a 4.94/289.57. The ET gave him the #3 spot in the field. He looked like he was on his way to another victory when he beat Cruz Pedregon in the first round, with a 4.99/286.07. A round two 5.06/284.53 beat Frank Bradley, but in the semifinals, Amato's 5.01/275 beat his 5.06/282.92. At the non-points NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham, Bernstein qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.06/279.85. He fouled against Lori Johns in the first round. This year, it was the first time that Kenny had not set the meet's Top Speed. NHRA's next stop was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 4.96/287.72 qualified the "Budweiser King" in the #3 spot. A 4.97 in round one beat Dick LaHaie, while a 5.05/277 beat Dakin's 5.09 in round two. In the semifinals, he ran Don Prudhomme and Kenny's 5.03/285 beat the "Snake's" 5.14. Bernstein scored another win when final-round opponent Snow lost an engine. Kenny's 5.04/282.75 won his third NHRA race in five events. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also, 4.96 from Bakersfield testing and 289.57 from Gainesville 3/91. The sixteenth and final member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel on 2/24/91, with a 4.996 (288.18) at NHRA Phoenix. |

A first-round 5.91/281.86 beat Gene Snow and a 5.01/280.54 beat Jack Ostrander in round two. In the semifinal, his 4.98/282.39 beat a quicker and faster Joe Amato at 4.95/283. In the final, a 4.96/281.07 beat Jim Head's 4.98/279. At the next race, the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Kenny just made the show, qualifying #15 with a 5.15. A first-round 5.07/276.24 lost to Pat Austin's 4.99/287. As mentioned above, he set a 4.84 NHRA record at the NHRA Supernationals. He qualified #8 with a 4.94 and made it into the final against Amato. Amato won with a 4.91/292 to Bernstein's troubled 7.19/117.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.82 at the sport's first 300 mph run, a 301.70. He backed it up for a new NHRA speed record. In the actual race, he ran a first-round 4.88/298.30 over Dannielle Deporter and a second round 4.87/299.30 over Tommy Johnson Jr. In the semifinal, he ran a wheelstanding 5.57/263.46 over a tire smoking Mike Brotherton. In the final, Eddie Hill's 4.84/290 beat Kenny's shutting off 9.43/86.40. At the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham in April, Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.01/288.64 (Top Speed), but he lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.46 in the first round, with an off pace 5.78. The next NHRA stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Kenny qualified #1 with a track record 4.85/296.15. He beat Austin's 5.00/284 in the first round, with a 4.93/298.50 (Top Speed), in round two his 5.01/294.69 lost to McCulloch's 4.98/285. The sixth race of the NHRA schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 4.98/293.82 qualified second. He lucked out in the first round, when both he and Johnson Jr. smoked the tires. Bernstein's 5.54/257.43 came out on top. In round, he got some revenge on McCulloch who had stopped him at the last two events by running a 4.96/295.85 (Top Speed) over Ed's 5.11/281. In the semifinals, Brotherton's 5.00/288 beat a tire smoking Bernstein. Things didn't go to well for the Budweiser Team at the Springnationals. First they qualified way down in the #7 spot with a 5.05/287.72. Then in the first round, another 5.05 at 289.76 lost to Austin's 4.96/289. They more than made up for it by winning the next NHRA race, the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.01/284.99. A first-round 5.07/288.64 beat Robert Reehl and in the second round, a 5.06/287.90 advanced when McCulloch broke. In the semifinals, he faced Al Segrini in Billy Lynch's car and once again his competition broke and he advanced with a 4.98/290.88. In the final he was up against Don Prudhomme. His 5.03/292.58 (Top Speed) beat the "Snake's" close 5.06/271. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenny was still the only driver that had ran 300 mph and he did it again here when he ran 4.88/300.40 to qualify #2 behind McCulloch. Unfortunately, in the first round, Dale Armstrong dialed too much power into it and Kenny smoked the tires and lost to Ostrander. Things went much better at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Once again Kenny qualified #2 behind McCulloch with a 4.93/284.53. He ran a 5.11/276.32 over Junior Kaiser's 5.38/247 in the first round, only a 12.26/75.34 was needed to advance past round two after Hill couldn't return after blowing a motor in his first-round race. In the semifinals, Bernstein's 5.15/275.56 beat Doug Herbert's 5.32/258. In the final he met up with McCulloch. What promised to be a good race was ruined when Ed smoked his tires and Kenny ran 5.16/268.57 for his third win of the year. The NHRA tour then went to Sonoma for the California Nationals. Kenny qualified #8 with a 5.01/290.41. A first-round 5.07/286.80 lost to Mike Brotherton's 5.00/282. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also, 299.00 at 93 Atlanta Southerns. | After being the other driver to run over 300 mph occasionally in '92, Kenny failed to break 300 even once in '93. It wouldn't be until Memphis in '94 that he ran that number again. But speed doesn't win races. Kenny's first outing of '93 was at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January. It was a rough weekend for him and crew chief Dale Armstrong. Dale was trying out a new cam and testing some new redesigned Dart/Sanchez heads. They made two passes on Friday, where he shut off early on one and banged the blower on the other. On Saturday, Kenny made an early shut-off pass before tire shake killed his second run. A third pass yielded a 4.98/271.65 with some burned pistons. Sunday was no better; a rod dropping 5.06/278.72 ended their weekend when the rod went through the block and damaged the frame. He started the NHRA season by stealing the headlines at Pomona for the Winternationals with his spectacular final round crash while running against Joe Amato for the victory. Amato got the win, but Bernstein got the "ink." Parts of the car stopped the timers at 5.08/221.40. The accident was caused by the engine blowing and throwing parts under the left rear slick. The tire blew, and Kenny lost control and crashed into the wall hard while on fire. He was OK, but the car was totaled. Earlier, he qualified #6 with a 4.89/289.38. A first-round 4.88/293.63 beat Don Prudhomme. In round two, a 4.90 beat Tony Pedregon's 4.99. In the semifinals, a 4.88/292.67 beat Doug Herbert's 4.95/295. At the NHRA Motorcraft Arizona Nationals, Bernstein's 4.91/292.49 qualified #6. In the first round, Jack Ostrander broke, and Kenny advanced with an 8.21/68.00. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Eddie Hill. He qualified #8 at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 4.87/291.54, and in the first round, his 4.91/286.25 beat Shelly Anderson's 4.91/291. But in round two, the "Budweiser King" broke and slowed to 5.19/212.06 in a loss to Ed McCulloch's 4.99/291. The Gatornationals was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Kenny ran 4.91/297.81 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, he lost to Hill in the first round. Bernstein attempted to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but his best of 4.98/288.36 left him as the second alternate for the eight-car show. He did much better at Atlanta, where his 4.87/297.42 qualified #3. A quick-leaving 4.94/293.35 beat Jimmy Nix's 4.93/277 in the first round, and in round two, both he and Pat Austin ran 4.93 (Bernstein at 286.54), but Kenny got the win light. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Hill's 4.89/290. It was then off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 4.93/296.34 qualified #2, but he fouled against Herbert in the first round. |

Notes: Bernstein started the '94 season by testing at Bakersfield at the end of January. He reset both ends of the track record to 4.80/300. He made four other runs but shut down early on each of them. Kenny qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.81/297.71. But in the first round, his 4.86/292.87 lost to Mike Brotherton's 4.83/284. Things didn't go much better at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, where his 4.90/297.02 qualified #15, and he lost to Joe Amato in the opening round. It went even worse at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Bernstein failed to qualify for the first time since entering Top Fuel competition in '90. After running 4.96/284.81 on the opening day of qualifying, every other pass saw the car go up in tire smoke. His time was good for the first alternate. Gainesville went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #9 with a 4.89/296.44. An opening round 4.91/293.63 beat Jimmy Nix's 4.92/282, and a second-round 4.93/291.45 stopped Jim Head’s 5.03/276. But in the semifinals, he lost a motor against Scott Kalitta, and his fireballing 5.21/225.84 lost to Scott's 4.79/305. It was another bad day at Rockingham for the NHRA Invitational race in April. Kenny was the third alternate for the eight-car field with a 4.93/297.52. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 4.88/296.54 qualified #4, and a first-round 5.07/287.63 beat Stevie Foster's 5.16/279. But he lost to Eddie Hill in round two. Dale Armstrong was working hard on getting the team on the right track, and they showed progress at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Bernstein qualified #6 with a 4.89/296.83, but more importantly, his first-round 4.81/300.40 beat Nix. Why was it more important? It was the first time Bernstein ran 300 since he last did it at the '92 US Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Tommy Johnson Jr. in round two. He went home early at the NHRA Mopar Nationals at Englishtown, where he lost in the first round when he smoked the tires. Another first-round loss occurred at Columbus. In mid-June, he was there for the NHRA Springnationals and ran 4.95/298.40 to qualify #8. A slightly better 4.91/298.80 in the first round lost to Blaine Johnson's 4.90/297. Kenny was the first car over 310 with a 311.85 blast at the World Finals, followed by this 314.46 national record. Ran the 4.720 on the same clutch pass – in the final over McClenathan’s 4.798. |
