Notes: This car was run with two different Vega bodies in 1972, both bodies were painted the same, but had slightly different lettering. The original body was destroyed at Dallas International Motor Speedway during the IHRA Longhorn Nationals (June 2/4). After losing to Ken Safford in the first round, the windshield deformed at speed and hung the throttle open, Paul hit the fuel shut-off which leaned the engine out and popped the blower causing the body to come off and disintegrate. The Tom West photo shows the R&W Vega posed with the "Hannibal Eight" of Professor Fate (Jack Lemon) from the 1965 movie "The Great Race." |

Notes: Paul started his season at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and 75 cars were attempting to qualify. It was still surprising that he failed to qualify. He also was unable to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, where he ran a solo 7.07/171 to advance in the opening round when Mart Higginbotham lost his brakes and could not stage. But he fouled against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in round two. The following week (March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Paul's 6.57/213.44 qualified #10. His 6.680/222.22 fell to Ron Colson's 6.48/223 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. In April, he had one of the six cars at Englishtown for a round-robin race. He won his first race when Jake Crimmins got out of shape in the "Swensen and Lani" car. In his second race, he faced Jake again, and Radici's 7.13/194.13 beat Jake, who blew his engine at 7.62/198. He was at Columbus on May 13 for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Russell Long. Radici's Vega got out of shape in their race, and he shut down at 9.72 while Russell advanced at 7.00. Paul was the fifth alternate at NHRA Columbus at 71.1/203.61. Also, in June, he went to New England Dragway for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and a 6.75/204 in the opening round beat Larry Fullerton's quicker 6.70 in the "Trojan Horse." In round two, he defeated Dick Rosberg's 6.80/213 in the "Fighting Irish" with a 6.76/206. Unfortunately, he hurt the engine on that pass and could not return for the semifinal. He was "unlucky" enough to qualify #5 at the third NHRA Division 3 race at Milan. In the opening round of eliminations, low qualifier Al Bergler ran 6.76/218 to beat his 6.88/211. If he had been "unlucky" there, he had luck on his side at Beech Bend for its Independence Day Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 7.08/167.59 advanced when Gene Snow broke on the line. In the semifinal, he had a close race with Gary Henderson, who was driving the "Super Duster." Paul's 7.00/175.71 beat Gary's 7.03/195. He faced Don Cain in the final. Cain had run .95 and 6.85 to reach the final, so he looked like a sure bet to win. But Radici pulled one out of the hat in the final, as his 6.86/188.28 took the victory over Cain's 6.88/208. Shortly after that (July 29), he got another triumph at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Tri-City Dragway. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.65, and since the field was short, he got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round. He got out of shape in the semifinal and shut off to 9.19, but he still won as his opponent, Al Bergler, also lost it and slid off the track. In the final, he appeared to be the "underdog" again as he faced the "Jeg's" Camaro driven by Dale Emery. But Paul set Low ET in the final to win with a 6.54 at 209.30 that beat Emery's 6.61/221. He also qualified #1 at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.627/217.39 held for Low ET. He beat alternate Stan Bowman's 7.33/209 in round one, with a 6.952/213.77. In the semifinal, he had transmission problems, and his low gear only 7.330/192.71, lost to Frank Mancuso's 6.77/203. Paul was the 16th alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.63/222.77. Radici was the #5 qualifier on the Eastern Team and #9 overall at the Amarillo NHRA World Finals. He lost in round one to eventual runner-up Bobby Rowe, 6.70/218 to 6.80/197.36. That was the team's last NHRA national event for the year. |

Notes: Paul qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.66/197.80. He shut down to 8.50/110.15 in a first-round loss to Pat Foster. He was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis, and while he didn't win or even make the finals, Paul set Top Speed at 217.39. In May, he was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show. In the first round, he beat Joe Jacono but got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals against Kosty Ivanof. He came back out later and beat the "Frantic Ford" in a consolation race with a 6.84/165.70. Paul won the Capitol Raceway Coke meet with a 6.70 best. In Sept, he was at OCIR for its East vs. West Championships. A 12.4 second time is all he needed to win his first race when Jake Johnston lost the brakes in the "Keeling and Clayton" car and could not stage. In his second race, he beat Gary Densham with a 6.73/202.70, but he fouled against eventual winner Jim Dunn in his third race. Paul did have Top Speed of the Meet at 208.33. Paul qualified 8th at the 1974 NHRA World Finals/Supernationals with a 6.43/217.91 and lost in the first round, to Tom McEwen. Also ran 6.54 at IRP. |

Notes: Radici failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Gatornationals (need confirmation of this -- I don't see Paul on either non-qualifier list — BP). He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at the end of March. It was a 32-car field, and in the opening round, he beat Neil Leffler. He lost to Pat Foster in round two, who was driving the "Keeling and Clayton" car. Paul was in Portland in July for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, his late 6.89 in the opening round was beaten by Don Rae's 6.96. He got back in for round two, but this time his 7.09 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.54 in the "Plueger & Gyger" car. Paul qualified #12 at Seattle for the Fallnationals with a 6.705/210.28. He lost to Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.64/222 to 7.108/212.76. Bill saw this car run at the Coke circuit race at Dragway 42 in the Summer of 1975. He sent them a rendering of their car, and they asked him to design their paint scheme for 1976. Unfortunately, they did not come out until late that year and did not use a patriotic scheme as they had planned. Still, it was great to get a handwritten note from Dave Wise with the request! |

Notes: This was the orange and black Beretta (former Jam-Air Plueger car) we purchased from John Martin. First car with the Chicago Trapper name before the pretty black car. Ran car all year in 90 starting at Bristol. Ran part of 91 until we burned the body off of it at Houston. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: Wyatt was at Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals. He qualified #9 with a 5.472/269.46. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Whit Bazemore's 5.40/273. The following week (August 4), he was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. A 5.53/258.02 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to low qualifier Jim White in the "Hawaiian." NHRA's next race was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Wyatt's 5.66/260.86 qualified #14, and in the opening round, he lost to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. He attempted to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, and after running 5.59/265.01, he came back out for another qualifying attempt. Unfortunately, the blower exploded on this run, and the car turned into a fireball. Wyatt bailed out just before the fuel tank exploded. The car was burnt pretty bad. My favorite body and paint, although not downforce efficient. We burned the body off at Indy, replaced it with a Ford Probe to finish off the season. - Wyatt Radke |

Notes: Johnny West, Scott Graham, Mike Lui, and Wyatt Radke started building a new car on November 27, 1992. The team finished it in Jan, the day before Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event. On the car's first run, Wyatt's first run was an early shutoff to 7.02/127.87. The team only made one other pass at Firebird, an 11.62/79.89. Things went much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.25/284.62 qualified #11, and a shut off 7.20/122.01 advanced past round one when Mark Oswald failed to fire. In the second round, his 5.97/211.86 lost to eventual winner Del Worsham. A week later, they were in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Radke qualified #11 again with a 5.45/267.30. He improved to 5.37/284.45 in the first round to beat Oswald's 5.39/217, but a 5.39/233.52 in the second round lost to Del Worsham's 5.25/283. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. There, Wyatt's 5.33/264.31 qualified #10. In round one, an off-pace 5.67/251.32 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.13/281. He was the #14 qualifier at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.43/271.82, but he lost to Force in the first round. He got back at Force at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and Wyatt's 5.44/263.15 qualified #7. He faced Force in round one, and John smoked the tires while Radke got the win light with a 5.33/240.64. Unfortunately, the Daytona broke in the semifinals against Gordie Bonin. The team made up for it at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, where a 5.27/284.09 qualified #2. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.49/268.81 and a 5.35/281.33 stopped Whit Bazemore's 5.43/269 in round two. But in the semifinals, old veteran Tom Hoover ran 5.44/256 to end Radke's hopes with a 5.52/271.73. The team skipped the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown but was back on the Springnationals. A 5.142 was low qualifier, Low ET, and a new track record. After qualifying #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Radke beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.32/277.60. A second-round 5.24/279.24 beat Chuck Etchells' close 5.26/282. In the semifinals, he faced Bonin, and Gordie got off the line first, and his 5.31/284 beat Wyatt's quicker 5.30/278.89. At the NHRA Western Nationals, Wyatt's 5.45/265.48 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. That was Wyatt's last event in the car. Best times of 5.142/288.18 from Columbus. |

Notes: Wyatt attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.689/233.22 was good for the fifth alternate. Wyatt qualified #15 at the World Finals at 5.399/255.97 but did not race in the first round. We need to confirm the World Finals appearance was in this car. | Car was well-worn by this time. One time, Wyatt felt the chassis flex on the hit, and then the thing wanted to turn sideways! He said, got to get a new car! The team then purchased the Mike Kase car destined for Bruce Larson and did well the next year. - Wyatt Radke, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com - 9/18/17 |

Notes: Wyatt duplicated the Indy 279.85 at Memphis in round one (5.168). We formerly listed 286.55 mph for this car, but that did not occur on the NHRA trail. Was that at a match race or a test session? |

Notes: Wyatt ran 5.513/247.11 in this car at Indy (8th alternate). He ran 5.318/282.01 at the World Finals. Assuming that is in this car. Please advise if not. Earlier in the year, Wyatt was the 5th alternate at NHRA Phoenix with a 10.969/71.86 shutoff. Assuming that was this car, too. |
