Notes: Rampy made his Pro Stock debut at the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a best of 7.26/189.99 for the third alternate spot. He also failed to qualify at the next NHRA event, the Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, but he was close. His 7.31/189.71 was the first alternate. David made a marked improvement at the next race, the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston, where he qualified #5 with a strong 7.12/191.93. A first-round 7.16/191.16 fell to a Larry Morgan holeshot at 7.20/190. Rampy stayed in the game at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 7.13/191.77 and got his first-round win in Pro Stock competition when he beat Jim Yates' 7.25/189 with a 7.24/190.07 in the first round. In round two, he slowed to a 7.28/187.07 that lost to Rickie Smith's 7.25/190. At the NHRA Winston Invitational, Rampy qualified #13 with a 7.19/191.44. In the first round, an even better 7.18/190.96 lost to Scott Geoffrion's 7.10/194. The following week he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, and once again, he showed well. A 7.20/190.71 qualified #7 (out-qualifying Bruce Allen, Bob Glidden, Larry Morgan, etc.) He beat Mark Osborne's 7.27/190 in the first round, with a 7.24/190.23. Geoffrion got him again in the second round with a 7.15/192, beating David's 7.26/189.67. The next NHRA race was the Mid-South Nationals in Memphis. Rampy continued his string of qualifying, which was hard to do with the level of competition. His 7.23/190.03 qualified #11. In the first round, a 7.23/190.19 beat Steve Schmidt and in round two, a 7.27/189.55 advanced when Kurt Johnson fouled against him. Both Rampy and Bob Glidden ran 7.24's in the semifinals, but Glidden got the win. One week later (May 23), the NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the Mopar Part Nationals. David qualified #14 with a 7.18/192.02. In the first round, an off pace 7.67/146.72 lost to Geoffrion's 7.24/189. He slipped to a 7.31/189.43 non-qualifier (third alternate) at the NHRA Springnationals, but he was back in the show at the NHRA Western Nationals, where he ran 7.30/188.60 for the #15 spot in the field. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.38/187.73 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.34/188. In the thin air of Denver, Colorado, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, David's 7.72/177.86 best was good for the third alternate. From there, it was off to Sonoma for the California Nationals on August 1. Rampy had a little more bad luck, and his best of 7.35/190.55 failed to qualify (seventh alternate). Things went even worse at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals the following week, where he ran a best of 7.33/189.39 and failed to qualify (tenth alternate) again. Rampy was hoping his luck would change at the Champion Auto Stores Nationals at Brainerd, but a 7.36/187.93 left him on the outside looking in (sixth alternate). The NHRA US Nationals was the next race on the schedule, and David breathed a little easy when he qualified #12 with a 7.25/190.15. In round one, he and Morgan ran 7.25's, David's at 189.79, but Larry won. He showed them at the NHRA Keystone Nationals when he qualified in the top half of the field with a 7.19/190.71 (#6). A first-round 7.20/191.61 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.23/191, but in the second round, a late-starting 7.19/181.45 lost to Osborne's 7.20/191. Topeka was NHRA's next stop for the Heartland Nationals. Once again, he qualified in the top half of the field with a 7.14/192.55 that held for the #4 spot in the show. He beat Vince Khoury's 7.25/190 in the first round, with a 7.23/190.63. In round two, a 7.25/189.63 took care of Yates' 7.31/189. In the semifinals for the second time in his Pro Stock career, he ran a 7.23/190.15 to beat Kurt Johnson's 7.26/191. Now he was in his first final. He met up with Morgan for the final, and despite a consistent 7.24/190.35, he lost to Larry's 7.19/191. In early October, David continued to impress at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals, running a 7.23/190.67 to qualify #7. A first-round 7.27/190.23 advanced when Schmidt fouled away a 7.23/191 against him. Rampy was a little slow off the line in round two, and Bruce Allen's 7.26/190 beat his 7.25/190.15. He ended the season back at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, where he just made the field with a 7.21/190.83 (#16).
