Notes: Rick was at Irwindale on May 18 for an eight-car show. He qualified last, but he made the best of it. A 7.77/184.04 in the first round, beat Walt Rhoades' 7.85/189. In the semifinals he improved to 7.74/187.50 to beat Jack Jones' quicker 7.60/194. This put him into the final against Rhoades who had gotten back in on the "break rule." Walt fouled and Rick eased to 9.85 for the victory.

Notes: Rick qualified #6 at Pomona at 6.824/199.55. He beat Don Prudhomme in round one, 7.16/204.08 to 7.69/146.57. He lost to Carl Olson in round two, 6.92/211.24 to 7.06/208.81. Rick was runner-up at Bakersfield 1971 to Don Garlits. He lost on a holeshot, Don's 6.71/223 mph to Rick's quicker 6.64/224. At the Dallas Springnatinoals, Rick qualified #24 at 6.751/208.33. He won round one over a fouling Mike Snively, 8.24/115.83 to 11.14/59.52, but fouled himself against Jim Nicoll and lost in round two, 8.20-96.77 to Rick's 7.29/148.27. Rick set a 6.51 national record at Fremont, CA, on 6/26/71. The team qualified #10 at Indy at 6.504/208.33 but fouled against Tom Kaiser in round one, tossing out an excellent 6.51. Notes: Like all of Keeling and Clayton's cars, this Pinto was a showstopper. All the car magazines of the day did an article on this car. Ramsey was at OCIR on May 26 for its Hang Ten FC 500 race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 7.28 qualified on the "bump." His 7.20/195.65 fell to Gervase O'Neil's Chevy-powered car in the first round at 6.90/184. At the NHRA Division 7 race held at Irwindale on June 23, Ramsey ran 6.73/189.47 in the opening round to beat Bob Pickett's 6.95/216 in the "Lil Demon." An off pace 7.17/191.48 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.78/210 in the semifinal. Rick was at Irwindale on September 29 for its Grand Prix race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.79 qualified #5. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round against Joe Lee and shut off.

Notes: The Keeling and Clayton cars were always showstoppers. The cars was right at home at a car show as they were at the race track. Driver Rick Ramsey started the season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. Unfortunately, he, as well as 24 others, failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Things went better at the second OCIR All-Pro race. Rick's 6.32 qualified #4 for the eight-car field. He improved to 6.13 in the opening round to beat alternate Frank Bradley's 6.47. He took a big win in the semifinals, where his 6.30/215.31 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.45/201. But James Warren blew his engine while winning his semifinal race. The "break rule" in effect stated that if a car were unable to return for the next round, the Low ET loser from the round before was reinstated. Well, wouldn't you know it? Prudhomme was reinstated for the final, and Ramsey got to rerun him. This time, the "Snake's" 6.58/223 got the victory over Ramsey's 6.81/214.79. The team then went to Pomona for an extended stay for the NHRA Winternationals. The track was terrible, the weather was awful, and the race took three weekends to run. In the first qualifying session on February 3, Ramsey ran 7.37/205.47 for the #30 spot in the 32-car field. By the time qualifying had ended, his improved 7.30/212 got him the #28 spot in the show. He lost in a tire-smoker to Dennis Baca in the first round. Rick just made the show at the third OCIR All-Pro race, where his 6.56 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. But the car broke in the first round, and he had to watch as Frank Prock soloed into round two. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Rick's 7.06 in the opening round beat a crossed-up Gary Cochran. But in round two, his 6.87 fell to the eventual winner Dwight Salisbury's 6.79. Shortly after that, Ramsey competed at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Danny Ongais' quick-leaving 6.48/227 defeated his quicker 6.41/225.00 in the first round. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 24 and featured sixteen-car fields. Rick qualified #13 with a 6.59. He shut down early in round one, and lost to Denver Schutz's 6.36. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Mike Kuhl had his Donovan for sale in National Dragster, indicating it was the quickest and fastest in the world. | Rick was at the second NHRA Division 7 race held at Irwindale in July. It was a twelve car field and his 6.14 qualified #1. But in the opening round, Dwight Hughes pulled a holeshot off the line that saw his 6.27/224 beat Ramsey's hard charging 6.24/234.37. Rick set Low ET at the Orange County PDA event in July with a 5.86 track record in round 2. At Bakersfield ran a 5.92 236.84 making it to the semi finals. Best NHRA times were 5.999/238.07 at Indy.
