Notes: The "GuZler" was a fixture on the UDRA's midwest Circuit. On May 12, Duke was at Tri-City for a circuit race. In the first round, he got Top Speed of the meet with a 7.12/215.82 that defeated Duane Nichols' 7.40/210 in the "Nitro-Holic." The 7.12 tied the track record held by Connie Kalitta. A 7.26/214.28 in the semifinal beat the "Wonder Car." He faced Cliff Zinc driving the "Twiggie" car in the final. Duke had been running much better times than Cliff had been, but in the final, the "GuZler" slowed to 8.15/138.88 in a runner-up finish to Zinc's 7.28/206. Shortly after that, he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for another Circuit race. Once again, he made his way to the final. He had beaten Harry Brewer in the semifinal and had run a best of 7.65/204.05 (Top Speed) before losing to Dave Powers in the final. He then went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. He failed to reach the final there. The following week (June 9), he qualified #1 at the UDRA race at Muncie, only to foul (7.74)against Noel Mauer in the first round. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #15. Tom McEwen lost fire against him in the opening round, and his 7.25/196.50 advanced. A off-pace 9.14/104.77 lost to Steve Carbone in round two. | Ray set the best time at a UDRA Fuel Dragster Circuit meet at National Trail Raceway with a 7.39/213.0. - RT

Notes: Jim Ray did not race at NHRA's first two races of the season. He did go to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ended up as the nineteenth alternate with a 7.30/191.77 best. He then was a no-show for both Houston and Rockingham before he returned to the NHRA tour at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. Once again, he failed to make the show, but this time, he was the twelfth alternate with a 7.18/192.51. He also made the next race, the Virginia Nationals at Richmond. He didn't qualify, as it took a 7.06 to make the field, but he was running much closer with his 7.08/194.62 (sixth alternate). Jim was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, his 7.15/193.96 best was good for the thirteenth alternate.
