Notes: One of the first big block Chevy Top Fuelers. This team gave Chevy lovers hope for a competitive Top Fuel Chevy-powered car. In April, Gary drove the Wilton-Doss Chevy at the weekly Irwindale Top Fuel shows. He qualified for the tough eight-car shows. He was running times of 7.74, 7.77, and 7.80 to get into these fields. The main problem the team was having was rocker arm breakage. Read was never able to run the car to the lights. Because of this, his best speed was 193. But by the end of April, M/T came out with some aftermarket aluminum rockers for the engine. On April 23, he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show where he lasted until the second round, where he lost fire against Rick Stewart. The next day they were at Pomona for a Pro Fuel Circuit race. Twenty-one cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Read qualified, but a first-round 8.34 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.76. Gary was back at Irwindale on May 7 for another sixteen-car show. He qualified with an 8.08 and lasted until round two, where his 8.02/180.72 lost to Steve Porter's holeshot 8.07/195 in the "Dark Horse. A week later (May 14), they were back at Irwindale for an eight-car show. A 7.84 qualified #5, but in the first round, the Chevy lost fire against eventual winner Tommy Allen. In early June, Ray Ayers took over driving the car; by the end of June, Gary Southern was behind the wheel. Not sure how long Southern drove for, but by October, Bob Brooks took over the driving chores, and the team did a full circle when Gary Read was back in the cockpit in November.

Notes: Gary was at Irwindale on June 15 for a four-car match. In his first race, he ran 7.71/195.22 to beat Mike Sullivan's unblown car at 8.57/171. Gary also won his second race with a 7.67/187.10 over Bart Dimatteo's 8.52/160. He got crossed up and shut off in his last race losing to Tom Ferraro. He grabbed a big win over the sixteen-car field at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. An opening round 8.09/190.26 defeated Sush Matsubara's 8.59/189, and in round two, his 8.31/194.80 advanced. Ted Tardie's 9.29/136 in the "Rat Trap" fell to his 8.10/196.06 in the semifinal. He faced Harry Burkholder in the final, and Gary's 8.03/197.80 got the victory over Harry's 8.36/186. On August 17, Irwindale held an Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each, and in the first round, Gary ran the best time of the meet for either class with a 7.69/204.08 that beat Jack Chrisman's 8.13/179. He got out of shape in his second race and shut off against Dave Beebe.

Notes: When Jim Thomas and the original "Genuine Suspension" funny car team split up after running the "AMX-1," Thomas was left on his own. The next car Thomas built was this almost forgotten Mustang. The Mustang was quite unlike the "AMX-1" because it was long and low. Thomas hired Gary Read to be the car's usual driver, but it also appears that Dean LaPole of "King Camaro" fame might have driven the car, too. The Mustang was not raced for long before Thomas built the Top Fueler for which he is best remembered.

Notes: Read was a strong runner, especially in the early part of the '75 season. Gary qualified #5 at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere event in January. That was pretty good, considering that 30 cars were trying to make the sixteen-car field. He beat Frank Prock in the first round, but he smoked his tires in round two and lost to the eventual winner of the show, James Warren. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Read qualified #1 with a 6.18 but failed to make the finals. He ran strong again at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he used a 5.972/231.36 to qualify #3. In the first round, a 6.200/223.88 beat Gaines Markley's 7-second shutoff, but in round two, the car came up ailing and could only muster a 9.01, which lost to Herm Petersen's 6.22/225. At the Gatornationals, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.042/226.70. A first-round 6.142/220.04 beat Pat Dakin's 6.49/181, but he hurt the motor and could not repair it in time to make round two. The next big race was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.00/242.58 qualified #5 in the 32-car field. We don't have eliminations results from the race. Gary was the first alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.242/216.38. He qualified #10 at NHRA Sanair at 6.345/222.22 but lost to Gary Beck in round one, 6.14/236 to 6.42/215.31. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.
