Notes: Contrary to expectations, "The Farmer" didn't always drive a Pontiac. In June 1956 Arnie Beswick relied on the dual-quad 315-cid hemi in his Dodge D-500 to take the C-Gas trophy at a championship meet at Oswego, Ill. - RT; Photo: "Traditional images that need no explanation," p. 1411, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: He won stock eliminator honors at the NHRA/NASCAR Winter Nationals at Daytona Beach on Feb. 7/13 held at Flagler-Bunnell Airport. His home track was Cordova where he garnered the most season class and top stock eliminator wins. He often ran two cars there at a race, the other being a '58 Pontiac in C/G. At the World Series of Drag Racing event at Cordova he won the Ultra Stock class and top stock eliminator. Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (July 2008), p. 44 - MB |

Notes: Steel GTO with factory frame. Along with Chrisman's Comet, Mr. Norm's AWB '65 Dodge and a handful of others, Beswick's blown Mystery Tornado match racer prompted Super Stock & Drag Illustrated to ask whether "we may see a return of the fuel coupe and sedan type racing, so popular in the early days of drag racing." - RT |

Notes: Steel GTO with factory frame. Along with Chrisman's Comet, Mr. Norm's AWB '65 Dodge and a handful of others, Beswick's blown Mystery Tornado match racer prompted Super Stock & Drag Illustrated to ask whether "we may see a return of the fuel coupe and sedan-type racing, so popular in the early days of drag racing." - RT | Built during the 1964 season when Jack Chrisman and the Dodge Chargers factory teams were grabbing headlines, this car also had the only set of aluminum 1964 GTO fenders Pontiac ever made according to Arnie. Beswick found the car so popular that he dropped his new A/FX Mercury sponsorship deal midway through the '65 season rather than park the Tornado. After building the 1963 Tameless Tiger Tempest, the chassis was sold to a circle track team in the Quad Cities region and was subsequently destroyed. The lightweight panels from the car were lost in a well-publicized fire at Beswick's farm. - GS | Arnie faced Dick Landy for a best-of-five match race at Capitol on July 31. He won the first race when Landy fouled, but Dick came back to win the second race. The third race saw Beswick's 9.72/145 beat the Dodge. Landy tied up the match at two, each with a 9.78/140 in the fourth race. The tiebreaker was won by Landy, giving him the match race win. – RH | Apparently, Arnie was credited with an 8.63/163 at Byron, IL, in the September 19, 1965, Drag News issue. Byron IL 1965 (9/18/65 Drag News), but Bret Kepner confirmed it was actually an 8.69 at Cordova (7/23, Bill & Bret late night phone call) |

Notes: Arnie Beswick might not have been the biggest winner of the sixties, but he did put on a hell of a show. Beswick was a loyal Pontiac racer, though there was a short stint with a factory-supported Comet A/FX in early 1965. The "Tameless Tiger" 1963 funny car was home-built from 1963 lightweight factory Tempest parts and steel to replace the previous blown GTO's weight and wheelbase restrictions. Working doors, wheelbase mods, and leaf springs meant it was a little scary, to say the least. Beswick had already stepped up to blown nitro after beginning with gas in the previous GTO at the urging of future funny car star Frank Oglesby. This gave the greater Chicago area three blown nitro funny cars in 1964, including Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norm's Dodge, Ron Pellegrini's Super Mustang, and Beswick's goat. In addition to the wheelbase changes, the "Tameless Tiger" was rebuilt to be much lighter than when it first raced in A/FX. How much of the rare original FX vehicle was used is unknown. As a supercharged fuel car, it was a serious contender nationwide for the two seasons it was raced, noted for extreme wheelstands and top-end antics. The TT was crashed once by Arnie at Cecil County in early 1966 and again much more severely by driver Arnie Behling during a North Carolina match race in 1967. Beswick never fixed it, and it was relegated to the Morrison junkpile. - Geoff Stunkard | Mr. Donnie Reeves of Marietta, GA, purchased the remains in 1994. He restored the original body utilizing a new fiberglass front end & doors. Don consulted with Arnie Beswick to ensure the TT was as correct as possible. The car even made a couple of passes at a nostalgia show in the mid-90s. The TT was purchased by Mr. Don Snyder Jr. of New Springfield, OH, in 2001 and currently resides in his extensive lightweight & drag car collection (see racer link). | We need to confirm best times. |

Notes: Arnie was at Drag City late in January for a best-of-three match race against Tom McEwen, who was driving the "Hemi-Cuda." Beswick got out on McEwen in the first race, but the Mopar drove around him to a 9.37 win over the Pontiac's 9.54. Arnie got out first in the second race as well, only to watch as McEwen came past again. Tom made it three straight over the Tempest. In March, Beswick ran 8.35 at Alman, GA, to reset Gary Dyer's 8.58 world record. Beswick was at Cordova on June 25 for a best-of-three match against Darrell Droke's blown SOHC Mustang. In their first race, Beswick's 8.90/160.42 beat Droke's 9.00/151. Darrell fouled in the second race, and Arnie won the match two straight. Arnie was at Cordova for a best-of-three match race against Larry Reyes' "Kingfish" Barracuda on October 2. In the first round, Arnie went into a wheelstand and shut down, losing to Larry's 9.09/138. In the second race, it was Larry who got out of shape and shut off, giving Beswick the win with an 8.87/163. In the third race, Beswick ran 8.83/158 to win the match when Reyes got out of shape again. |

Notes: Did both the GTO and the Tempest run 8.30s in 1966? We need to confirm the best times for both cars. | Beswick was at Aquasco on July 31 for a best-of-five match race against Bill Lawton in the "Tasca Ford" Mustang. Arnie won their first race with a 9.61/153.05, but he fouled in the second, and Lawton evened up the score. In the third race, Bill ran 8.63/158 to beat the GTO's 9.85/150.75, and in the next race, Arnie's engine soured, giving Lawton's 8.77/159 the match race win. |

Notes: Arnie Beswick and Don Gay were two of the last to run Pontiac-powered FCs. That and the fact that they were both very competitive made track operators do what they could to make them appear at their track. Arnie had been there since the beginning of the FC movement. He was a diehard Pontiac fan. While he never scored many "major" event victories, he was always tough to beat in match race competition. Early in May, he was at Oswego for a best of three match race against Doug Cooke, who was driving the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. A wheelstanding 10.76/104.56 lost to the Mustang's 8.89/166 in the first race but a 9.44/157.89 in the second, won when Doug blew a rear end. He made an easy solo for the win when Cooke could not repair for the last race. On May 14, he was at Minnesota Dragways for a match against Hayden Proffitt and his Corvair. Arnie's 8.82/169.81 won the first race over Proffit's 8.87. He shut off in the second race, giving Hayden the win at 8.72/163. The two had a great race in the tiebreaker that saw Hayden's 8.88/157 get the win over Beswick's much better 8.71/169.81. Arnie was at Union Grove in mid-September for a UDRA race. Unfortunately, he broke a rear-end during qualifying, and Pete Gates took his place. On October 1, he was at Covington for its Factory Showdown race. It was a 3/16 mile track, and the race featured eight cars. He beat Huston Platt in the opening round but fouled against Phil Bonner in the semi-final. Hard to say whether his tiger-striped AWB LeMans coupe or the beautiful "Star Of The Circuit" GTO is the Farmer's most famous racecar. The "Star" was built on a budget. Beswick didn't have the dough for a full tube chassis, so he took the stock frame from under the '64 Mystery Tornado GTO and had the Logghe Bros. add a tube front axle to it. This car has been restored and is running serious laps at nostalgia drag events. - RT |

This car has been restored and is running serious laps at nostalgia drag events. - RT | Confirmed 8.34 at Cecil County 5/18/68. | Arnie was loyal to Pontiac, and by '68, it was getting harder and harder to compete against the Mopar Hemis, SOHC Fords, and Chevy Rat motored cars. The other Pontiac standout, Don Gay, switched to Chevy motors mid-season. But there was no way Beswick would put a Chevy or any other engine in his car. He started the season with this GTO, but he changed to a Romeo Palamides built car mid-season. On February 18, he competed at the East Coast Funny Car Championships in Orlando, Florida. A first-round 9.32/163.33 beat Lee Walker's Camaro at a quicker 9.21/153. He was to face Phil Bonner in round two, but Arnie had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure. He then went to Daytona Beach for the NASCAR Winter Championships, where he finished runner-up to Bill Lawton's 8.91/169 despite running a quicker 8.88/164.53. On May 5, he was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Liberman in the first round. He ran really well at Cecil County's Fuel Showdown on May 18. A first-round 8.34/156.79 beat Malcolm Durham's quicker 8.16/180. In the semifinals, Beswick ran 8.17/174.41 but lost to Liberman's 7.92/182. Arnie was back at Aquasco on June 16 for a best-of-three-match race against Durham. The "Strip Blazer" was having all kinds of problems, and Arnie won two straight, hitting 181.63 on one run. He was in Canada for Grand Bend's Funny Car Championships on June 30. It was a four-car field, and Beswick got out of shape and shut off against Gary Dyer in his first race. In his second race, he lost to Eddie Schartman. Shortly after this, he debuted his new GTO. |

Notes: This is Arnie's 1968 car. He did run it some in 1969. A September 1969 American Rodder magazine credits the car with a 7.71 at Quaker City and 194.36 mph at Orlando. However, it's unclear whether the times were run in 1968 or early 1969. Fiberglass LTD body. The body flipped from the front. |

Notes: In 1969 Beswick would show up with a team of three Carousel Red '69 Judges: The "Righteous Judge" match racer, a D/Stock Judge and the Super Judge fliptop funny. Often he'd use the D-Stocker as the flopper's towcar, then turn around and race it. (Since Pro Stock wasn't an NHRA class until 1970 was this considered a match racer or ?) - RT |

Notes: Arnie was at Orlando on January 4 for the Drag News Championships. A first-round 8.49/175.78 advanced past Huston Platt, who broke a transmission in Tommy Smith's Dart. Phil Castronovo blew an engine in the second round, and Beswick shut off to an 11.02/114.20 to advance. In the semifinals, he fouled against Larry Arnold. He went to York US 30 for an eight-car show in April, where his 8.24/173.41 lost to Bruce Larson's 7.71/187 in the opening round. He came back later for a grudge race against the "Super Twister," and Arnie won with an 8.06/176.81. He was at New York National Speedway in May for the Springnationals. Beswick lost early, and his best pass was 7.99/180.26. On June 21, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA 1/8 mile Championships. He reached the final against Bobby Rowe driving the "Super Duster," but Arnie broke a rear end and had to settle for the runner-up money. Beswick was at Lions on October 24. 25 FCs were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Arnie qualified, but in the first round of competition, his 7.38/198.67 lost to Randy Walls' 7.30/204. Did Arnie really run a 6.91/213 in this car? We need confirmation. | Photo from 1970 Springnationals at New York National Speedway, Long Island. - RT |
