Notes: Noel was at Fremont in June for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 6.24/228.42 beat Joe Ortega's quicker 6.13/227. In the semifinal, his 6.30/216.34 lost to eventual winner Dave Uyehara's 6.08/229. | I bought the Ultimate Persuader from Roy Mattox with a new KB aluminum block, new KB half-inch crank, enclosed trailer loaded with spare gaskets and tools, and even his fire suit (which fit me like it was made for me) for $8200 delivered to my front door in San Juan Capistrano from Indiana. I emptied the trailer since I already had one and sold it a week later for $2300. It was built by S&S. I ran that name for a while, then changed when it was painted. Notes: He ran with a Latham-blown small-block '59 Chev engine. On June 5 at Union Grove, he set a national record with 118.42 mph. At Minnesota Dragways on July 3-4, he won the C/G class. Returning to Union Grove on July 10, he won the B/G class with an 11.73 ET, which was a new national record. That obliterated the old record of 12.14. At Union Grove on July 17, he won the B/G class with 12.25 at 118.09 mph. During the meet, he had run below 12 seconds and turned a top speed of 120.20 mph. However, during eliminations, he cracked a piston. That put him back in the shop to repair things for a few weeks. He returned to action on September 5 at Minneapolis, where he won the C/GS class with 11.95 at 118.73 mph. He also won Middle Eliminator on September 4 and September 5 at the 2-day event. Racing again at Union Grove on October 8, he won Little Eliminator with 13.32 at 118.42 mph. He took the B/G class victory with 12.32 at 118.42 mph. "Big Mike" was scheduled to have a match race with Palmer Lazarus from Chicago at Great Lakes Dragaway on October 16, but Lazarus was plagued with engine problems all afternoon and failed to make even one run. He took Little Eliminator honors at Great Lakes on October 30 with 12.10 at 120.00 mph. The long-awaited match race between Palmer Lazarus and Marinoff finally happened on November 13 at Union Grove. Notes: Milwaukeean Marinoff's white-over-red '55 Chevy hardtop sported a GMC 6/71 blower and 2-port Hilborn injection for 1961. He competed in C/GS at the '61 Indy Nationals. - RT; He raced for the first time at Union Grove in the '61 season on May 14. Running a new engine with Bill Reeves doing the driving, he competed in B/GS. He snapped an axle on the first run. Although all the races were finished, a thousand spectators stuck around for 45 minutes to see Reeves make one run after replacing the broken axle. This was a testament to Marinoff's popularity among the fans. They were not disappointed as Reeves ran 12.21 at 116.88 mph. To show their appreciation, Union Grove awarded him the gas class elimination trophy. On May 21 at Union Grove, he ran 12.79 at 115 mph on his final run of the day. He then suspended racing his '55 Chevy to devote time to building his Willys gasser, which was ready in time for the Cordova World Series of Drag Racing in late August. Notes: He debuted his brand new Willys gasser at the World Series of Drag Racing event at Cordova on August 27. His first run off the trailer netted him an 11.79 at 123 mph. He won the B/GS class with 11.47 at 124.48 mph. His best time during the event was 11.45 at 126 mph. Back at his home track at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove on September 17, Bill Reeves and Big Mike Marinoff took a class win with 11.25 at 127.66 mph.
