Notes: Flip-Up Funny Car. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation. Larry Reyes met Bill Taylor in '66, and Taylor let him drive his new Funny Car. Reyes liked it as the team won some races. He continued to drive for Taylor for the next two years. He drove the "Kingfish" part-time during the '67 season as he held a full-time job at Jones Imports in Memphis. The team went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Larry ran 8.52/172. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car field, and Reyes won his first-round race but could not race in the semifinal when the car lost oil pressure. In mid-April, Reyes beat Bob Sullivan's "Pandamonium" Camaro in a best of three match race at Alton Dragway. On April 16, the "Kingfish" was at Memphis for a best of three against Bobby Woods Chevelle. In their first race, the Chevelle got out of shape and was all over the track, so Woods shut down, and Reyes ran 9.12 to win. They both left the line together in the second race before both lost traction. Reyes recovered first, and he ran 9.27/151.60 for the win. Woods had blown both head gaskets, so Joe Lunati filled in with his Camaro for the last race. It made no difference to Reyes as he reset both ends of the track record with an 8.41/172.50. Reyes was also driving at Cecil County for the three-day Super Stock Nationals. He was in the "unlimited" class for blown cars only. On Friday, he shut off to 8.64/156.25 in a loss to Roger Wolford's 8.46/166 in the opening round. On Saturday, the "Kingfish" beat Al Vanderwoulde in the opening round, but a blown rear end prevented further competition. The car was repaired for Sunday, and this time Larry's 8.19/179.56 lost to Jack Chrisman's 8.07/184 in the first round. A Super eliminator was also run on Sunday to have sixteen fuel-burning cars and sixteen gas-burning cars run separately until there was one left of each to run against each other for the title. A handicap was given based on the times run by the cars over the weekend. Reyes continued to have problems in the first round, and this time his 8.18/174.41 could not overcome Tom Grove's .5 second handicap. Grove's unblown Mustang beat him with an 8.36/166. Reyes ran 7.97/189.08 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. |

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis, and a 426 Chrysler Hemi powered the car on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy James Ibusuki). | Reyes raced Ed Schartman on March 3 at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race. He took the win by winning the first two races with 8.22 and 8.27 times. In the last race, Schartman won with an 8.35. On April 7, Reyes had a tough best of three match against Tommy Grove at Kingston. Both cars were strong runners in early '68, with Grove's Mustang being the "killer car" on the match race circuit. Grove went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Reyes won with an 8.12 at a track record speed of 187.50. Tommy got a holeshot win in the second race with his 7.99 beating Reyes' track record 7.98. These were the first sevens even turned by an Funny Car at Kingston. In the final race, the "Super 'Cuda" got the holeshot, and its 8.10 beat Grove's 7.98. On April 13, Larry beat Terry Hedrick in a best of three match at Houston, and the following day (April 14), he downed Kelly Chadwick three straight, running a track record 7.94. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for an eight-car show. A first-round 8.02/167.28 beat Bob Sullivan's 8.30/181, while in the semifinals, he soloed with a 9.54/104.40 when Ted Detar's new car broke. In the final, he faced Dick Harrell. The two had a good race, with Reyes' 7.92 (Low ET) at 177.16, beating out Harrell's 8.03/182. Early in June, Reyes took on "Dyno Don" Nicholson in a best of three match at Milan. In their first race, Don's 7.81/175 beat Larry's 7.88/183.66, but the "Super 'Cuda" came back to win the next two races for the match race with runs of 7.84/178.57 and 7.78/182.92. He won the Norwood, New England, 1/8 mile Funny Car Championships on June 21. Going into this race, the track record was held by Grove at 5.08. It was an eight-car show, and Reyes ran 5.12/146.34 in the opening round to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 5.23/142. He broke the track record in the semifinals with a 5.03/149 over Lew Arrington's 5.86/115 in the "Brutus" Firebird. He faced Dick Loehr in the final. Dick's Mustang had engine trouble and slowed to 10.4 while Reyes lowered the track mark ever further with a 4.99 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was back at Milan for another match race with Schartman. Reyes won the first race with an 8.02/181 over Eddie, who blew a transmission. But the Comet was strong on that day and, after fixing the trans, beat Larry in the last two races. In the second race, Larry's 7.99/179.79 lost to Schartman's 7.81/181, and in the last race, Ed reset the track record with a 7.73 at 184 over Reyes' 7.87/189.64. Near the end of June, he went to Detroit for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he opened up eliminations by running 8.07/176.81 over Tom Smallwood's 8.24/159 in the "Kingfish." But a second-round 8.13/177.51 lost to Hedrick's 7.83/179. Another win came at the Supercharged Invitational at Capitol on July 13. There he ran 7.77/191.88 to beat Lyle Fisher's 7.88/188 in the first round. In round two, his 8.07/185.94 advanced when Fred Goeske blew a transmission. A semifinal 7.68/189.06 beat Arrington, who got out of shape and shut down. He faced Nicholson in the final, and he covered him easily with a 7.54/192.03 (Top Speed and Low ET), taking the win over "Dyno's" 8.05/181. By this time, the "Super 'Cuda" was considered one of the top FCs to beat as it was almost always setting top times everywhere it ran. Yet another win came at the Super Stock Nationals. There a final round 7.53 beat a blower exploding Schartman in the final. Reyes had set Top Speed of the meet at 193.12. | Confirmed 7.54/192.03 at Fremont 1968 - Mick Coyne |

Notes: By the time Larry Reyes began driving the "Hawaiian" in 1969, he was a true funny car standout. Reyes had driven the "Super Cuda" Barracuda, the "King Fish" Barracuda, Larry Coleman's Coronet, Phil Bonner's "Daddy Warbucks, " and his own Barracuda. Reyes became the first of many funny car drivers for Roland Leong, who jumped on the funny car bandwagon after having success in dragsters with such drivers as Don Prudhomme, Mike Snively, Mike Sorokin, and Danny Ongais. Leong had a Logghe-built Stage II chassis with a full-size Ron Pellegrini-built Charger body, and Keith Black built the engine. Larry qualified on the bump spot at 8.331/180.72 at Pomona. Larry won his first-round race against Mike Hamby, 8.14/181.45 to 8.58/167, but the car literally flew and crashed, signaling the end of the full-size funny car. Leong debuted a new mini Charger shortly after that. The new "Hawaiian" won all three races it entered the first weekend with Reyes driving. Reyes drove the car to a reported best of 7.35 at 208.31 by the end of 1969. Larry left Leong and later drove for Candies and Hughes, Prock and Howell, and the last "Super Cuda." Reyes suffered an accident at the wheel of the "Super Cuda" that left him in a wheelchair. Larry returned to race 20 years later in Super Gas. Leong went on to race and tune funny cars for the next 25 years with a seemingly endless list of drivers. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from James Ibusuki) |

Notes: Larry Reyes had been driving for Bill Taylor for the past three seasons before he decided to field his own new car for '69. He raced the new car a few times in Southern California before meeting Roland Leong at Keith Black's shop. Leong asked if he would like to drive the "Hawaiian" at the NHRA Winternationals, and Reyes agreed. After letting the "Candies and Hughes" team use the car at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, he sold the car to Paula Murphy. |

Notes: This is the second car of 1969, the mini Charger. After crashing the car at the Winternationals, Roland Leong had Logghe build a new Charger, and he debuted on May 24 at an eight-car show at Lions. The car was still a little too new, and his best of 7.90 failed to qualify. On May 30, Reyes was at Irwindale for another eight-car show, but the team had the "bugs" worked out this time. He set Low ET at 7.47 but lost his first-round race when Mike Van Sant's 7.55/196 in the Invader beat his 7.65/184.80. But Reyes got back in with the break rule in effect when Johnny Wright, who won his first-round race, broke and couldn't return for the semifinal. The Hawaiian had the lowest ET of the first-round losers, so the team was brought back into the show to race Mike Van Sant again, only this time in the semis. The Invader lost fire on the line, and Reyes advanced to the finals, where he ran a 7.64/184.80 to win over Ron Leslie. The next day (May 31), he raced at OCIR for the Funny Car 500. A 7.40/200.06 qualified #1, and a better 7.38 (Low ET) at 199.55 got past the first-round, and another 7.38/199.11 beat Gordon Mineo in the second round. Larry got a free ride into the final when Manuel Herrera blew his motor on the line. In the final, a 7.63/200.07 (Top Speed) beat Randy Walls for another win. Larry was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for a best-of-three-match race against Charlie Allen on July 12. Things didn't go well for Reyes on this day as his 7.78/182.54 lost the first race to Allen's 7.68/185. In the second race, the big Charger was shut off on the line with an oil leak, and Allen soloed with an 8.49 for the match race victory. On July 20, the "Hawaiian" was at Suffolk for a best of three against Della Woods and her "Funny Honey" Charger. A 7.65/181.44 beat her 7.97/178 in the first race, and in the second race, Della's car lost a rear end, and Larry's 8.36/137.82 won the match. Reyes made a third run of 7.86/158.45. On October 11, the "Hawaiian" was at Irwindale for a best of three match race against the Fuel altered of Sush Matsubara. Reyes won the match by winning the first two races with a 7.53/190.26, beating Sush's 7.78/194 in the first race, and his 7.72/176.81 beat the out of shape roadster in the second race. Matsubara did win the last race with a 7.78/194 when the Charger lost a transmission. Larry finished the year by winning on December 14 at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified second with a 7.45 but improved to a 7.38/193.96 in the first round, over Johnny Wright's 7.59/179. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.27/199.10 over Ray Alley's 7.74/194. In the final, a 7.35/199.54 beat Dave Beebe. By the end of the season, Reyes had racked up an 80% win record for '69. |

Notes: Larry was the second driver of the Super Ford in '69, Larry Arnold drove the car early in the year and Reyes was in the seat in April. Reyes was driving on April 5 when the transmission let go in the first round, at Orlando, Florida for the third annual East Coast Funny Car Championships. He ran much better of May 4 at Detroit for a best two-out-of-three match race against Dick Harrell. He beat the Chevy superstar three straight. He only drove the car until the end of May when the Logghe Brothers completed the new Hawaiian that replaced the Charger that had crashed at Pomona. As soon as it was ready he went back to driving for Roland Leong. - Bill McL |

Notes: Larry Reyes drove Candies and Hughes car only once at the Gatornationals. Leonard Hughes debuted a new '70 Cuda at the Gatornationals and had asked Roland Leong and Larry Reyes to tune and drive the '69 car there as well. Reyes was able to out qualify the new car with a 7.21/208.8 to Hughes 7.28/202. Reyes then ran 7.15 followed by a Low ET 7.10/207.85 in the semifinal before meeting Leonard in the final. For the final Reyes let Hughes get a big lead before leaving the line, but still almost nipped Hughes's 7.29 with a 7.12. |

Notes: Reyes started the '70 season at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. He qualified second with a 7.50 and ran a first-round 7.58/196.06 over Marc Susman. In the second round, he lost to Don Hampton's 7.48/201 with a 7.57/198.66. He raced at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 18 but fouled away a 7.27/202.70 in the first round. At the AHRA Winternationals, he beat Don Prudhomme's 7.68 in the first round, with a 7.57. A second-round 7.64 beat Leroy Goldstein, who fouled, but in the semifinal, it was Reyes, who fouled away a strong 7.46 against Tommy Grove's Mustang at 7.58. A 7.73 was the best Larry could do in qualifying at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, placing the team #14. He improved to a 7.54 in the first round to beat Rich Siroonian's 7.93. An easy 7.72 advanced past a fouling Kelly Chadwick in the second round, and Leonard Hughes made it easy in the semis by fouling against him. In the final, a 7.55/196.39 beat Gene Snow's 7.83/184 for the win. It was a sweet victory since the year before the car was destroyed after winning his first-round race and flipping onto its roof. At the Gatornationals, Reyes drove Candies and Hughes old, proven'69 Cuda while Leonard Hughes sorted out the team's new '70 car. Reyes qualified third with a 7.21/208.80 (Top Speed), set Low ET at 7.10, and threw the final when the two team cars met. Hughes motored to a 7.29/202 while Larry waited and ran a 7.12/191.08 for the runner-up spot. Just before Indy, Roland Leong and Reyes parted ways amicably as Larry was getting burnt out from the extensive traveling. Pat Foster drove the "Hawaiian" at the NHRA Nationals. | Reyes ran 7.58/195 at Budds Creek late in 1970 (defeating Lew Arrington on a holeshot). We need to confirm it was in Roland's car. - Mike Gagnon |

Notes: My lifelong racing pal since 1957, Larry Rayl of Topeka, Kansas, and I were at Orange County International's "Super Track" for their All-Pro Championships on February 14/1971. The late great "Big John" Mazmanian had two Funny Car entries. Rich Siroonian Funny Car 717, Big John's late great-nephew, drove the familiar Woody Gilmore chassied, Keith Black powered, candy red 'Cuda. And the all-new Woody-built mini 'Cuda with the gold trim shown in Larry's nice pit photo was driven by John's new No. 2 driver, Larry "Pineapple" Reyes, Funny Car 201, who had already run this car at the recent 1971 NHRA Pomona Winternationals. Larry Reyes was my "pioneer main man" of Nitro Funny Cars at the time. Larry's "pioneer main man," Don the Snake Prudhomme, stole the OCIR All-Pro Funny Car show that day by saving his best for last and winning with a then mind-boggling dragster time of 6.62 ET at 226.13 mph in his "Lil' John" Buttera-built, Keith Black 426 Hemi-powered 'Cuda. In comparison, Big John's Keith Black 426 Hemi' Cuda Funny Cars only ran in the 6.80s. And Tony Nancy's dragster had Low ET of the meet at 6.46 at 232.55 mph. However, Mr. "C" Gary Cochran's car won top fuel dragster. Mazmanian's two-car plan for 1971 was for Reyes to tour back east with the new car, and the late great "Sir" Rich Siroonian would join him at the many National meets with the older 'Cuda. After the March Meet at Bakersfield, CA, where Siroonian drove instead of Reyes, Mike Snively Funny Car 707 took over the reins of this same mini 'Cuda Funny Car, with all new Rueben candy red paint and lettering, and Maz sold the old car. Larry and I again saw the new 'Cuda with Snively driving at Dallas, Texas, at the NHRA Spring Nationals. Good memories. - Cliff Tarpy | Qualified #5 at Pomona Winternationals at 7.12/198. Won first-round over Dave Condit, 7.04/201.79 to 7.18. Lost second round to Jake Johnston, 7.03 to 7.11. |

Notes: Larry drove the John Mazmanian car at Pomona and then the Super Cuda at Gainesville. While he qualified for the field, he lost to Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" car in the opening round. The "Super 'Cuda" was also one of the "seeded" cars on the AHRA Grand American circuit. He did not run any other NHRA national events in 1971. He won the Division 2 race at Suffolk on 4/25/71 with a 7.09 and went 6.89/208 at Norwalk in June (Dennis Doubleday info). The best NHRA national event times were 7.18/193 at Gainesville. |

Notes: Reynal was a member of the Salinas Hi-Timers and Slopokes car clubs. He was also vice president of the Northern California Timing Association. He won the Class C division drag race on Sep. 10, held during the 3rd annual air fair at the Salinas Airport. Class C was for stock-bodied cars but with fenders removed. He was the fastest qualifier in Class C on Nov. 26 at the drag races held at Sky Park Airport in Scott's Valley. He won Class C at the Salinas Airport race on Dec. 10, turning 103.45 mph in his gold and white '32 Ford. That was the fastest speed during the racing events. Four hundred spectators watched those races. There were faster times clocked during qualifying, including runs by Joe Mailliard and Harold Nicholson, but Reynal had the fastest time during the afternoon racing.
