Notes: This was the second RCS Sub-Frame built. Ran 6.48 at Sacramento. | Walt Rhoades, Charles James, and Steve Levy had all individually competed in Top Gas competition. When T/G was dropped, they teamed up on this car. It used an unusual chassis. The basic 225" chassis was built by RCS, but then Frank Huszar designed a sliding sub-frame to remove or maintain the engine. The engine was a bored out 392 Hemi that used a Moldex crank as well as Howards rods and 7.5:1 Arias pistons. Howards also supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Mondello and they used 2" Donovan valves. Don Hampton prepared the blower and Hilborn injectors rode on top. It used an RCS direct drive to a 4.30 rear end. The bodywork was the product of Nye Frank. Despite the extra subframe, the weight was only 1,400 lbs. It cost $8,000 to build. Early runs by Rhoades produced a 6.31/225. Notes: In June, Walt was at OCIR for its Lions Championships race. It was an eight-car field and he set Low ET at 6.32 in qualifying #1 in his Donovan powered car. An opening round 6.37/221.13 beat James Warren's 6.39/217.39. Bob Noice broke while winning his first-round race and was unable to return for the semifinals, so Warren was reinstated as Low ET car from the previous round. So, the two raced again in the semifinals with the same results. Walt’s 6.36/220.04 beat Warren's 6.37/224. But this time Walt broke and was unable to run in the final. So once again, Warren was returned to the show and he beat Don Moody to win the race. Still, not many racers got to beat Warren twice in one day. He was back at OCIR on June 30 for the Nitromethane Championships. It was a sixteen-car field and Walt's 6.38 led the show. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled against eventual winner Carl Olson. The PDA Championships were held at OCIR on July 22 and Rhoades was a strong contender. In round two he laid down a strong 6.23/227.27 to beat a tire smoking Jeb Allen and he repeated those numbers in the third round (32-car field) to beat Tom McEwen. But in the semifinals, Don Garlits dished up a 6.23 of his own at 236 to beat Walt's 6.48/215.31. He was at Sacramento on July 29 for the NHRA Division 7 race. A first-round 6.50/218 beat Noice and a 6.41 in round two defeated Olson, but he lost in the semifinals to Larry Dixon's Chevy-powered car. Indy had 85 cars attempting to qualify for the 32-car field for the NHRA US Nationals. Walt ran 6.291/225.00 to qualify #30, but a first-round 6.38 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.21. |

Notes: Walt was at Irwindale for the fourth annual Grand Premiere race on Jan 5th. He was one of 30 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Rhoades failed to qualify, but he was the first alternate, and when #12 qualifier Shorty Leventon broke and was unable to run in eliminations, Walt took his place in the field. He almost made it all the way. A 6.24/224.43 in the first round, beat Stan Shiroma, while a round two 6.21/217.91 took out Gary Hazen. He fell off to 6.37/230.76 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Gary Ritter's late 6.31/226. In the final, he went up against James Warren. Walt ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.18/236.13, but so did Warren, whose winning 6.01/239 was good for both Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. Walt's speeds were very impressive for a Donovan-powered car at the time. Shortly after that, he was at Antelope Valley for a best-of-three-match race against John Zendejas. In the first race, Rhoades shut off,9.07/112.21 won when John had to shut down on the line with a fuel leak. Zendejas also had problems in their second race and shut down to 10.72/102, while Walt scored the MR victory with a 7.02/208.33. They still ran a third race, and Walt reset the track record to 7.00 while running 209.73 to beat John's 8.87/174. Another good showing came at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #16 in 32-car field and ran 236.84 mph. He lasted until round two before losing. Two weeks later, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West event. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.34/201.34. Once again, he lasted until round two, where he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Warren's 6.23/226. Walt won over an eight-car field at Sacramento in April. Twenty cars had attempted to qualify, so it was a tough show. Walt's first-round 6.43 beat Jim Herbert, and in the semifinals, he got one back from Warren when his 6.34 beat a tire-smoking 8.35 from James. In the final, he faced Dwight Salisbury. Rhoades picked up the victory with a final 6.26/213.59. At the Irwindale Fox Hunt race in May, the final came down to Warren vs. Rhoades, and this time, James made his way back into the winner's circle. It was Warren who stopped Walt again at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. Only this time, it happened in the first round. Walt's 6.19/234.98 lost to Warren's 5.99/238. Warren would go on to win the race. At the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Sacramento, Walt again lost in the first round, this time to Dwight Hughes. | In NHRA national event action, Walt did not qualify at the Pomona Winternationals with a 6.150/238.72. He qualified at Indy with a 6.116/235.00 and defeated Gaines Markley in round one, despite receiving no time. Walt fell to Gary Beck in round two, 6.083/231.36 to 6.234/232.55. Walt got a 'five' at the Ontario Supernationals, but his 5.994/235.60 did not qualify in that unreal field led by Garlits' 5.637 and anchored by Stan Shiroma's 5.932. |

Notes: Walt qualified low at Firebird Raceway in the first week of October for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.42 (Low ET) at 211.26. He fouled away a 6.53 in the first round against eventual winner Stephen Fedele. The following week, he was in Las Vegas for the NHRA Division 6 final. A 6.46/207.85 qualified #3. In the opening round, his 6.49/205.94 beat Larry Klinger. In the second round, he ran another 6.46 at 203.15 to defeat Mark Vasquez's 6.83/198. In the semi-final, he lost to Bruce McDowell, where his 6.51/200.44 fell to Bruce's 6.43/209. Shortly after that, he went to Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, where he set Low ET in qualifying low with a 6.39/213.98. Rick Santos fouled against him in the opener, and he advanced with a 6.67/205.76. But in round two, his 6.69/211.16 was stopped by Gary Scelzi's 6.55/211. We need to confirm that Walt went 222 in 1985. The fastest record speed was Bryan Raymer's 221.55 at Amarillo. The Safeway Sandblasting car was at NHRA D7 Fremont, CA, in 1986. Was it Rhodes or Stark? |

Notes: Walt ran 6.30/216.29 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals to qualify #3. An opening round 6.32/215.37 beat Rick Santos' 6.44/205. In round two, Rhoades ran 6.31/211.16 to take out Eldon Slick's 6.53/210, but, in the semifinals, he slowed to 6.41/214.28 and lost to Bill Barney's 6.38/214. He won the NHRA Gatornationals, where a final round 6.37/214.13 beat Barney's 6.56/168. On April 12, he was at Gulfport Dragway for the NHRA Division 4 race. His 6.48/211.26 qualified #1, and he made his way to the final by running 6.50/210.28 over Gary Travis and 6.48/207.37 on an "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals. He faced Mike Withrow in the final, and Walt fouled, shutting down to 8.20/129.31 in a runner-up finish to Mike's 6.55/209. In May, he attended the NHRA Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge. It was an eight-car field, and it took a 6.44 to get in. Walt ran 6.40/210.97 to qualify #3, and he improved to a 6.38/213.42 in the first round, beating alternate Travis' 6.62/179. A semifinal 6.55/206.61 lost to the eventual winner, Tom Conway's 6.42/212. He had another good run at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He only qualified #10 with a 6.52/209.05, but worked his way to the final. In the first round, both he and Don Woosley ran 6.53 (Rhoades at 208.71), but Walt got to the line first. In round two, Dennis Forcelle had problems and shut off to 8.41/98 while Walt advanced with a 6.51/201.92. He beat Tony Lebor's Rodeck-powered car in the semifinals with a 6.56/208.18 to Tony's 6.73/195. This put him into the final against Barney. Bill had run some 6.4s on the way to the final, but his semifinal win came with a 6.55/212. In the final, Bill ran 6.54/211 to get the victory over Walt's 6.57/208.76. Walt qualified #15 at Indy with a 6.382/212.16. |
